Textbooks To Go Digital – Will It Change Schooling As We Know It?
2009-08-18 11:05:00 As a kid, I would love the week preceding the school reopening, when you buy all new books for the new term. I can speak for most of you when I say that there is something magical about the way new textbooks smell. Well, those things might soon be history, at least in Australia. Schools in Australia could soon be moving towards the introduction of e-textbooks, which would mean the students would only be carrying ebook readers that will contain the chapters from all subjects in an ebook format. While the idea definitely sounds exciting from a student’s perspective – no more heavy bags, and possibly also lower expenditure on new books; it also raises other concerns. A trial done at a Melbourne High School raised problems like slower data loading, Â slower page turning and very few titles that were available for free. Â But the bigger problem comes from copyright issues. ”Digital rights management restrictions at the point of sale have been developed for individuals ...

Virginia: Islamic School Revises Textbooks... Some Hate Still Remains
2009-03-13 05:19:00 An Islamic school in Northern Virginia with close ties to the Saudi government has revised its religious textbooks in an effort to end years of criticism that the school fosters hatred and intolerance. While the Islamic Saudi Academy deleted some of the most contentious passages from the texts, copies provided to the Associated Press show that enough sensitive material remains to arm critics who claim the books show intolerance toward those who do not follow strict interpretations of Islam.Astrid Riecken/The Washington Times Christine Brim is part of a group of critics who believe the textbooks at the Islamic Saudi Academy promote intolerance toward non-Muslims. The Northern Virginia school recently developed new Islamic studies textbooks in an effort to address the criticism. The academy, which teaches nearly 900 students in grades kindergarten through 12th at its Alexandria campus, developed new Islamic studies textbooks for all grades after a 2008 congressional report called portio...

2008-04-06 06:59:00 A lot of students ask me for my recommendations on books to use to study English. Occasionally I get a supposedly interested client who just checks out my bookshelf and walks out, which is pretty rude! I hope the only reason I'm in business is not that I have access to amazon.com and a credit card! In truth, studying with a tutor is ten times better than just studying with a book because you

eCampus
2008-03-08 08:41:00 eCampusHistoryWhat is the fastest and most convenient way to get a textbook into the hands of a college student? To answer that question, a group of people began a series of meetings on January 20, 1999 and eCampus.com was born. The more we talked the more we came up with new ideas for service and convenience. By February 1 we were writing code - including code for what we think was the first "traveling book bag" on the Internet. We incorporated on April 16, 1999 and began to move into our headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky. eCampus.com officially went live at approximately 11:20 AM, Friday, July 2, 1999. Need cash? Sell your used books to eCampus.com for top dollar. Free online quotes! Free shipping with tracking and insurance! Click here!As the site grew in scope and capability others joined us. Development teams emerged. Designs and ideas were discussed, developed and adopted. On July 18, 2001, eCampus experienced a ?re-birth? when A Book Company, LLC, purchased the eCampus name...

Save On Textbooks
2008-02-04 13:01:00 At the beginning of the semester probably one of your largest expenses is textbooks. However, there are a number of ways to minimise this cost. Firstly you should consider the three following questions:1) What books do I really need?2) Can I loan these books from the library?3) If I can't loan all the books, where is the cheapest place to buy books?Loaning BooksFirstly I will consider whether you need to buy textbooks at all, as loaning books will obviously cost you nothing. Most textbooks can usually be found in small to medium sized quantities in your university library, depending on the size of the library. However, they usually go quickly, so you should act fast. Once you have got out these books you can usually keep renewing them once a week for the length of the semester, unless someone puts a hold on the book. Therefore, if you can find and loan all your textbooks from the library, you may not need to spend anything at all on books-good times.Buying BooksIf you cannot loan t...

Selling Old Textbooks
2008-01-19 17:48:00 By now most of you will have finished your January exams and have textbooks that you will almost certainly never use ever again. There are three main possible places where you can turn your books back into drinking money:1. Selling at UniversityMost university departments have book sales in which you can sell your old books. You can also usually advertise books on noticeboards in your department. This is probably the most cost effective way of selling your books, as you do not have to pay the university any fees or have to pay for postage, however your audience may not be as wide as selling on the web.2. Amazon MarketplaceAmazon Marketplace is an excellent and easy place to sell your old books. All you have to do is type in your books ISBN and a description of its condition and its instantly up on Amazon. Amazon gives you £2.50 (paid by the customer) for postage and packaging (always check how much it will cost you to post), however they do take a fee. This is 86p for completion, 17....

Virginia County to review textbooks at Islamic Saudi Academy
2007-10-29 22:23:00 School officials in a Virginia county neighboring Washington, D.C. are reviewing Arabic-language textbooks at a private Islamic school to see if it is espousing radical Islamic views following a federal panel's recommendation that the school be shut down.School officials do not expect to find any problems with the textbooks at the Islamic Saudi Academy, but want to study the issue "to put the matter to rest," Fairfax County spokeswoman Merni Fitzgerald said Monday.Earlier this month, a federal human rights panel recommended that the academy be shut down until a review was conducted. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom said in a report issued Oct. 17 that it had no direct evidence of a problem at the academy, but is concerned that the school closely mimics a typical Saudi education, which some critics say promotes intolerance against Christians, Jews and Shiite Muslims. The academy, subsidized by the Saudi government, has nearly 1,000 students in grades K-12 at two...

Word-Formation in English (Cambridge Textbooks in Linguistics)
2007-08-27 14:18:00 Book DescriptionProviding an accessible introduction to the study of word-formation, this text focuses specifically on English. Assuming no prior linguistic knowledge, Ingo Plag explains the fundamentals of word-formation, demonstrating how morphemes--the elements of a word's internal structure--can function to relate words to other words, and to create new words. Students are encouraged to undertake their own morphological analysis of English words, and are introduced to the methodological tools for obtaining and analyzing relevant data.Download DescriptionThis textbook provides an accessible introduction to the study of word-formation, that is, the ways in which new words are built on the bases of other words (e.g. happy - happy-ness), focusing on English. The book's didactic aim is to enable students with little or no prior linguistic knowledge to do their own practical analyses of complex words. Readers are familiarized with the necessary methodological tools to obtain and ana...

Schleiermacher, textbooks and oral tradition
2007-05-18 22:32:00 In his charming little book On the Glaubenslehre: Two Letters to Dr Lücke (Atlanta: Scholars Press, 1981), Schleiermacher makes a humorous observation about textbooks (p. 75): ?Not only must we always take care that there is enough room to shelve these printed pages, but in my opinion it is important that our students have books that they can carry around comfortably?. Moreover, in our universities there is a great deal of oral tradition about both the teachers and the texts, and it seems to have quite an influence on our beginning students.?I love this tongue-in-cheek reference to ?oral tradition.? And he?s right, too: when you talk with first-year students in a theological faculty or seminary, it?s often very striking to see that they have already formed crystal-clear opinions about which books and authors are important or unimportant, which teachers should be taken seriously, which ideas are childish and naïve, and so on. It would be interesting to know something about the sociol...
On textbooks: Hendrikus Berkhof
2007-05-18 01:07:00 I reckon one of the best texts for theological students is Hendrikus Berkhof?s profound and exciting work, Christian Faith: An Introduction to the Study of the Faith (Eerdmans, 1979). Although this book is dated in several important respects, in other respects it?s still far more ?up to date? than many recently published works. Berkhof is a real theologian who really knows what theology is all about: he grapples intensely with the history of theology, with the best biblical scholarship, with the surprises and possibilities of other Christian traditions, and with the specific demands of contemporary faith and proclamation. In the opening pages of Christian Faith, Berkhof rightly notes that systematic theology is ?not something to learn so much as something to do and practice? (p. xii), so that the task of a textbook is simply to induct students into this practice. Or, as he puts it in a later essay: ?Theology is not so much a set of convictions, but a way of discoveries.?

Colleges, publishers set fair prices for textbooks
2007-02-25 21:50:00 Re the Feb. 16 story Colleges review ethics of textbook selection: In explaining high cost of college textbooks, publishers themselves note that students pay for much more than the printed volume. Additional resources such as more-frequent updates, websites, live online tutoring and instructors' manuals all contribute to the cost of a text, which serves as an entry to useful supplementary material. One major reason for expensive textbooks is college bookstores. For example, Barnes & Noble runs the Florida International University bookstore. As a corporate entity, it seeks to make a profit. The university also receives money from the corporation. The student buying books foots the bill.[Read More]

Iranian textbooks indoctrinate students to become ?martyrs? in global holy
2007-02-10 05:35:02 LONDON — Textbooks used in Iran’s schools are instilling students with hatred toward the West, especially the United States, and urging them to become “martyrs” in a global holy war against countries perceived to be enemies of Islam, a new study says. An Iranian human rights activist, Ghazal Omid, praised the findings, saying they prove hard-liners in Iran are using the books to turn children into “ticking bombs.” Link to this article.
