2008-05-06 07:22:00 AHMEDABAD: A fire broke out on Monday in a textile manufacturing unit at the Piplaj-Pirana road on the city outskirts, fire officials said.The unit caught fire around 1500 hours, they said, adding "no casualties have been reported yet. Since this is a factory where superfine cotton is made, the fire was spreading pretty fast.""The factory where the incident took place is located in an interior area. Moreover, there is no proper approach road for the fire-fighters to reach the spot," they added.The officials said the windy weather was making it difficult to control the blaze.Also, there was less water available in the periphery which could be used to extinguish the fire, they said."We have about 24 fire-fighter vehicles and 100 men working to control the situation. 2008-03-31 05:43:00 BL reported that, alarmed by the high level of pollution created by textile processing units located on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, city based MCT Enviro Infrastructure Limited is constructing a 78 kilometer effluent discharge pipeline up to the Gulf of Khambhat.As per report, a special purpose vehicle called MCT Ahmedabad Textile Effluent Cluster Limited will be formed for the project in partnership with the Gujarat government.The pipeline, to be constructed on build, own, operate and transfer basis at a cost of INR 295 crore, will be handed over to the Ahmedabad Textile Processors Association after 5 years from the date of commissioning, which is likely by June 2009. 2008-01-30 11:21:00 The textile industry in Pekalongan, Central Java, is reeling under the weight of sharply increased prices of cotton and rayon, and facing tight competition from cheaper imported products, a spokesman said. Anis Sungkar, chairman of the Pekalongan branch of the Indonesian Textile Association (API), said here Wednesday, the drastic increase in the prices of cotton and rayon as the industry`s feedstock had become a serious problem to the local textile producers as they had made the industry unable to compete with cheaper imported products. "Currently, there are only two rayon producers in Indonesia, namely Soft Pacific and Indo Barat Rayon. But as the rayon price in international markets has increased, they prefer to export their products," Anis said. Pekalongan is one of the country`s main traditional batik production centers.
