Fired Apprentice Has More Sex Appeal
2008-06-02 23:00:00 Fired Apprentice candidate Michael Sophocles has claimed that he has increased sex appeal as a result of his appearance on the programme.Though he was one of the most controversial contestants of the series, the 25-year-old telesales executive has received more than his fair share of female attention in recent weeks."I'm a sex addict. I just love women," Michael told the News of the World. "I've slept with over 70 but I've only had two girlfriends, and I haven't been in love. When I'm with someone I always see other women who I want to sleep with."It's great - I can now just go up to someone and not have to make any small-talk. They'll just jump into bed with me."Sophocles also confirmed reports that he worked as a male escort while studying at Edinburgh University. He turned to the occupation after running up gambling debts."I was looking through a dirty magazine in bed and I saw ads for escort agencies. I called one and they wanted a £100 joining fee," Michael explained. "I...

The Apprentice - Week 7
2008-05-08 12:39:00 I enjoyed this week's episode of The Apprentice, where the teams were sent to Morocco to buy 10 specific items for the least amount of money.Having lived in and visited parts of the world where haggling is a way of life, I thought the teams did pretty well. Some of the things that I was looking for:Know the lay of the land before you start purchasing. Get to know the marketplace, what's on offer, and at what price before you start negotiating prices with a seller. That way you know whether or not you can afford to walk away from an item once you've started negotiating.Be respectful in your interactions. Simply yelling "too high, too high" at a seller or lying about having only a certain amount of money isn't going to encourage them to lower the price. Offer an educated and fair counter-offer to their price. Offering prices in writing rather than verbally is also usually best, as the seller doesn't have to worry about another buyer overhearing the great deal they just gave you.U...

2008-05-05 22:32:00 Former Apprentice candidate, Lindi Mngaza, has dumped her boyfriend of three years so she can start a relationship with fellow contestant, Michael Sophocles. Mngaza’s ex-boyfriend Donovan O’Hagan is said to be upset by the callous way he has been treated. A friend of Donovan told The People: “He’s a gentle giant who wouldn’t hurt a fly. But inside he is furious about what Lindi and Michael have done. They have humiliated him. He had planned to marry her and start a family but all of that has been blown away now. “As soon as Lindi got involved with The Apprentice she changed and turned her back on her old life in Birmingham, looking for excitement with her new friends in London. The Apprentice and the apostrophe
2008-05-01 15:06:00 I know that I blogged about The Apprentice only very recently, but today I'm going to do so again – after all, it's not often that you see a debate over the positioning of an apostrophe on prime-time television. For those who had the misfortune not to see yesterday's episode, the teams' task was to design greetings cards based around a new 'special occasion' of their choice. One of the teams decided to designate February 13 as a national day for single people, but had trouble deciding on the correct punctuation to use (see poll on the right). At one point during the three or four hours of apostrophe-related debate (which, fortunately, was edited down for the benefit of viewers), team leader Michael Sophocles even attempted to phone the editor of national paper the Telegraph to ask his opinion. The nice lady at the British Library was a little more helpful but not too authoritative.I've embedded some of the footage here (thanks, YouTube), so you can see what Sophocles finally ...

The Apprentice - Week 6
2008-05-01 11:30:00 This week's episode of The Apprentice was more of the same - another product design, product pitch task where the teams needed to create a holiday, design greeting cards, and then pitch the cards to retailers. Despite going through the motions and some good processes, neither team did very well, mostly because of two main factors.First, common sense trumps just about everything, and the teams just don't seem to have any (or at least don't use it). The team that proposed creating paper cards to make people aware of environmental/green issues was simply operating in a plane of reality that doesn't connect to mine. Whether you have loads of experience or education, you should have at least a little bit of common sense. If you use it every now and again, you'll get ahead.Second, at points during the show, both teams defined their market as 'everyone'. 'Everyone' is very rarely a good market. If 'everyone' truly is your market, you are either selling a commodity product (a tou...

The Apprentice - Week 5
2008-04-24 12:06:00 An apology to my regular readers for missing last week's Apprentice. I had the good fortune to see Speed the Plow at the Old Vic instead, a fantastic night out! A key business message from the play: Canoodling with your assistant is never a good idea. This week's challenge on The Apprentice was for the teams to work with two boutique dairies to develop new ice cream flavours and sell them into new customers in London - a pretty straight-forward product development and market introduction task.It surprised me that the teams had few problems this week on the operational side, which has always been weak in past episodes. I attribute that to the fact that someone from each dairy was coaching them through the production process. What didn't surprise me was that the teams again failed to get their head around who their customers would be, what they would want, and how they would sell to them. While there are some candidates on the show with very strong communications skills, I still don...

The Apprentice - Week 3
2008-04-10 13:46:00 Last night's episode of The Apprentice was right up my street - they asked the teams to transform two pubs, bringing in new customers and seeing which team could make the bigger profit. In my blog on last week's episode, I said that I'd be looking to see if the teams would approach the 4Ps (product, price, place, promotion) in the right way in this task. They didn't.One of the things that is special about restaurants is that their location (i.e. place) is a defining factor for the product. The teams never got their heads around this. They dove into the task by brainstorming and agreeing what their pubs would serve without doing any homework on the neighborhoods they were in, who lived there, what other restaurants were around, what they served, or what they charged. It's obvious that none of the contestants have ever watched Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares - one of the very first things Gordon Ramsay does when he visits a new client is to walk around the neighborhood to identify wh...

The Apprentice - Week 2
2008-04-03 11:53:00 On last night's 'The Apprentice' the teams were asked to start up a 24-hour laundry service. Both of the teams made the same mistake this week - thinking that this task was about sales when it was really about understanding the value proposition of the business. Neither team started the task by thinking about who their customer would be, what they would value, and how cost effective (in terms of money, time, and human resource) that type of service might be. They made many of the same mistakes as last week. The boys eventually fell upon a sustainable value proposition - along with winning a large corporate order of bed linens, they started taking in bedding and other types of domestic linens that were too big and bothersome for residential customers to do themselves. The girls, on the other hand, sold at random, taking in whatever orders they could get, and never quite putting in place an operating model that would allow them to properly return those orders. It surprised me, too,...
