Batoni: The Artist of the Sacred Heart
2008-05-26 14:01:00
Chapel of the Sacred Heart, Church of the Gesu, Rome with the Oil on copper painting of the Sacred Heart painting of the Sacred Heart (1767) by Battoni and Domenico Maria Saverio Calvi Just finished at The National Gallery in London (18th May 2008) is an exhibition of the paintings of Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787), "Italy`s Last Old Master". See here.In his day Pompeo Batoni was the most celebrated painter in Rome and one of the most famous in Europe. But only two years after his death in 1787, Sir Joshua Reynolds predicted that Batoni's name would quickly fall into oblivion - and he was absolutely right.Throughout the 19th and for most of the 20th centuries few artists were more completely forgotten - or, if remembered, more thoroughly despised.Amongst his many achievements was to provide a series of paintings that could be used as a model for religious art.His representations of the Sacred Heart of Jesus were perhaps essential in the popularisation and spread of the devotion. One of th...
My Husband - the Artist
2008-05-22 23:29:00
The picture above is a perfect illustration of what can happen if you make the mistake of trusting your husband and toddler. Cara woke up at her usual 6:30 am time and after I grabbed her some breakfast, I lay on the couch in a semi-conscious state.  Her dad followed soon thereafter and I continued to ...
The Artist?s Mother ~ Haring, Hockney, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Picasso ?
2008-05-11 02:27:00
For this special day, honoring Motherhood, I thought to look at how some artists have depicted their own mother or an archetypal mother. Who’s Mom? The artists’ real mothers are displayed as persons with their own life. She is an individual with a personal life and character as is witnessed by her child, the ...
ArtSunday: The artist who made his ego wait outside his studio door
2008-04-27 06:01:00
Most art students learn to appreciate art by studying its history. Thus they’re usually exposed to the figurative art of past centuries before they are to twentieth-century art, with its effusion of styles. But some have a natural inclination for the avant garde. For example, jazz, with the homage it paid to old standards and show tunes, seemed too, well, straight, for this author when he was young. His gateway to its wonders, current and past, was John Coltrane. Likewise, his portal into art was abstract expressionism, especially personal favorites Willem De Kooning and Franz Kline. In other words, if he falls for a figurative painter, that artist has got to be world class. Which is exactly the direction in which 27-year-old Michael De Brito is headed. When a friend referred us to his website, it was instantly apparent that realism, already revitalized in recent years, had gotten another bracing infusion in De Brito’s work. The copy on his site reveals his influences: &...

Estelle: ?Let the artist be who the hell they are!?
2008-03-28 00:00:00
There was a certain irony in the announcement of the new No 1 single on Sunday. Replacing Duffy's Mercy at the top was American Boy by Estelle. Replacing a song by a singer groomed and promoted as bringing back "proper soul" was one by a singer from Britain's urban scene, ...

Black-eyed dog.
2008-02-04 02:48:00
Winston Churchill famously called it a "black dog" which, from time to time, would render him hopeless and despondent. What is the "it" I am referring to? Well, depression, of course.Over the last couple of days I've had a lot of trouble getting out of bed. The alarm goes off but I just stick one sleepy hand out from under the cover and hit the "off" button. I'll then go back to sleep immediately, waking up later and later each day. I'm sleeping around ten hours a night now, and I still don't feel properly rested. There's nothing I would rather do than just remain in bed for the whole day and I probably would if I didn't have pets to take care of. Thank God for them, I suppose.Although I've suffered from depression for many years, I've very rarely experienced an actual physically debilitating bout like this. More often than not, I manage to function albeit with an underlying, nagging sense of anxiety or worthlessness. The reason I'm feeling so bad now is, I think, because I...
The Artist and the Archbishop
2008-01-19 18:09:00
Wikipedia states that "Theological aesthetics is the interdisciplinary study of theology and aesthetics, and has been defined as being "concerned with questions about God and issues in theology in the light of and perceived through sense knowledge (sensation, feeling, imagination), through beauty, and the arts".This field of study is broad and includes not only a theology of beauty, but also the dialogue between theology and the arts, such as dance, drama, film, literature, music, poetry, and the visual arts.Notable theologians and philosophers that have dealt with this subject include Augustine of Hippo, Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, Jonathan Edwards, Søren Kierkegaard, Karl Barth, and Hans Urs von Balthasar, among others."Rowan Williams, The Archbishop of Canterbury, was born in Swansea, south Wales was Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity and Canon of Christ Church, Oxford before becoming a Bishop. He is acknowledged internationally as an outstanding theological writer, scholar an...
I just can't keep my big fucking mouth shut.
2008-01-14 18:31:00
I've gone and done it again. Compromised my anonymity, that is. Yesterday I checked my blog stats and noticed that somebody with an IP address based in my town had been looking at my blog a LOT. There's actually already one other person from my town who visits every day (could be coincidence, but I am a bit suspicious) but this was somebody new. I immediately thought it was the HispanicLawyer and then when I checked further that somebody had found my blog by using the google search terms "Artist's Way Blog Scotland" I knew for sure it was him. I had talked to him about my "secret" blog and about working through The Artist's Way book, so there was just nobody else that it could possibly be. I called him up and asked him, and he admitted it right away.To be honest, I wasn't really annoyed. In fact, my first reaction was to be rather amused that he had read all that stuff I'd written about him where I said that he was like an over-grown teenager. One of Robert Burns's most famou...
Don't piss all over my strawberries, Jimbo!
2008-01-08 20:08:00
Jim Murdoch, over at The Truth About Lies left the following comment on my blog yesterday as regards my decision to write in here everyday:"As for the writing every day malarkey ? why? I don't. ... And, if your blogs are going to be as long as this you will end up with repetitive strain injury and that could be a real bugger in your line of work. You have the makings of three blogs here. Rein it in a bit, lass, and think about us poor sods to have to read all of this."Well, I do apologize for the verbosity, Jimbo, but I can't really do anything about that except limit myself to one hour's writing a day. But, as regards the increased quantity of my writing, don't you think you should be encouraging that?A weird thing has been happening to me ever since I started following the "program" outlined in "The Artist's Way" - and I mean really following it, not just buying the book and reading it like I did last January and thinking "Aye, that sounds dead good", then doing fuck all. I...
Working Class Boy Done Good.

*** A handjob for the first (non-Scottish!) person who knows who this picture is of! The song's a clue! ***This "blogging every day" malarkey is turning into a bit of a chore. I am most definitely not in the mood for writing in here right now, and there are a million other things I could be doing but, nonetheless, it's a good discipline to blog as often as possible. I'm a bit pissed off, though: where did all you cunts disappear to? I start posting all the time, and the comments start drying up as fast as ma granny's fanny. Get yer finger oot yer arse and write something, fir fuck's sake (especially those readers in Australia who seem to be lurking all the time but who never say a bloody thing). Ach, what do I care if you lot all think I'm pish. I think the trick is to develop some faith in my own abilities regardless what anybody else thinks.A most curious thing happened to me yesterday. I had to take part in an 18-mile race and in the days leading up to it, I wondered how o...
The Artist's Way
2008-01-04 19:29:00
I don't know if any of you are familiar with "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron. An ex-boyfriend of mine (the biggest, most emotionally draining, soul-destroying head-fuck I was ever involved with) mentioned it to me after we had split up in early 2003. At the end of that relationship I was a mere shell of my former self, as my ex boyfriend had always been completely emotionally unavailable and eroded my self-esteem slowly but surely. There were a few moments towards the end when he was physically abusive (he even got arrested at one point for hitting me), but really he was just the kind of guy who, by his passive aggressive silence, made sure I knew that he didn't give a shit about me, my needs, my desires, and my creativity. I keep on having dreams about this guy (even though I haven't seen him for years and he's now living in France with a new partner and a baby) so I will get around to writing a blog post about him one day soon, but there's no time now to go into the reas...

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Artist
2007-12-14 16:59:00
Have you ever read The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron? Well, don't let the title fool you. The book is not just for artists. It's intended for anyone interested in going on a spiritual journey to free their inner creativity. Personally, I never had such a desire. If I want to go on a journey, I'd much rather go to London or Disney World. Nevertheless, I can't tell you how many people over the

Writing the Artist Bio, Take One & A Half 8-)
2007-09-08 21:30:00
So, I was looking at other bio examples, which is what it appears most people do to get ideas, & I noticed that bios vary widely. Some focus on "just the facts, ma'am" & are very cold & impersonal (date & city of birth, a chronology of major accomplishments, etc.), & therefore can make for some rather dry reading(!), and then others are very intimate & not only discuss the person's work, but their thoughts & entire life's history. My bio will probably fall somewhere in between. For writing in general, I think it often helps to have a framework from which to work. With these "official" pieces of writing, I particularly like to follow some kind of structure, as they seem to mandate it. I mean it's not exactly the place to be free-styling; people seem to expect that it will be a serious examination of the artist & their work.Ho hum. Right now, that's going to be particularly hard for me, as I can't seem to stop wanting to turn everything I write about into a laugh...
Writing the Artist Bio, Take One
2007-09-08 21:13:00
I'm sitting here trying to write my artist bio, so atleast I've moved from the phase of procrastination to the actual writing process. ;-)I am normally not a procrastinator, as you aren't allowed that luxury when you run your own business, atleast not if you want to run a successful business! ;-)But this is a beast of a different nature. Yes, sure it's promotional writing in its own way, which I'm actually good at doing, but as I mentioned earlier, I'd rather write about the jewelry, & not me. I realize the usual tired concept of the "artist as product," but frankly I'm a human being first & it nonetheless still offends my sensibilities to be categorized like this. Yes, I am a businesswoman, but I'm also an artist, & so not surprisingly, still have an untamed independent spirit, thank you very much!As you can see, I think I'd much rather blog about writing my bio than actually writing it, but atleast we're getting the juices flowing.

Painting a day - Thistles Diptych 2 panels each 24" x 9" Oil on Paper$725.00/ Set www.wynncreasyfineart.com I admit it. I am a mess when it comes to balancing life with work with art with romance. I have a wonderful partner with whom I enjoy sharing my life and my art business. He is my strength and my back bone and is great at keeping me focused on the next thing on the list. My partner is great at creating brochures and marketing materials. (You have no idea how many other artist have asked to borrow him! Thank goodness I have first dibs!) He is the practical one. He is more conscious of the business world and of politics. He reminds me often that I can be brash and outspoken, and at times step on people's toes and perhaps cut off my nose to spite my face. We rarely disagree on what needs to be done, but we often disagree on how to do it. When it comes to publicity and marketing, press coverage is important. So is having the materials at hand to sell yourself and make it...
"Talent", Fatalism, and the Artist's Fears
2007-08-18 16:28:00
One of my favorite "books for writers" is Art and Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland. Whether you need to sustain your faith in a long-term project or gather the courage to leap into a new one, this little book is an invaluable aid to identifying and overcoming the fear-based myths that prevent you from doing your work. One of those is "talent": Talent, in common parlance, is "what comes easily". So sooner or later, inevitably, you reach a point where the work doesn't come easily, and -- Aha!, it's just as you feared!Wrong. By definition, whatever you have is exactly what you need to produce your best work. There is probably no clearer waste of psychic energy than worrying about how much talent you have -- and probably no worry more common. This is true even among artists of considerable accomplishment.Talent, if it is anything, is a gift, and nothing of the artist's own making....Were talent a prerequisite, then the better the artwork, the easier it would have been to make. But...

Guest Star: Talib Kweli: Pain is the Artist?s Best Friend
2007-08-10 18:53:00
Pain is love, pain is hate, pain is the artists best friend. Sometimes we cut ourselves to see if we bleed, to see if we are still alive. We utilize the pain of hunger, growth, poverty, relationships and death to make art that expresses what people feel inside but don't always have the outlet for. Some of the best pieces of music, whether it is "Night Shift" by the Commodores, "T.R.O.Y." by Pete Rock and CL Smooth, "Candle in the Wind" by Elton John, or "Dillatastic Volume (Won)derful" by the Roots are tribute songs, wrapped in pain and hope. There were people who have passed on recently that have really touched my life, and I wanted to pay tribute to them over this Pete Rock track so I created "Holy Moly" or Pain. Gerald Levert had a classic voice and carried on the family tradition of the O'Jays properly. He reached out to work with me right before he passed. Rest in Peace brother. James Brown was the Godfather of Soul, but there would be no hip hop without him, we owe hi...
