Book review: The Assault on Reason by Al Gore
2008-01-28 18:38:00 I recently finished Al Gore’s latest book, The Assault on Reason, which takes a critical view of the current state of US democratic system and the systematic abuse against it by megacorporations, special interest groups and the system’s own executive branch. This book follows the same story of a good idea abused and turning against ...

Al Gore and The Assault on Reason
2007-07-13 15:26:00 As I read Al Gore’s Assault on Reason, I can’t help but continue to think about the book’s implications for the education system. A recurrent theme is the vital role played by both literacy and reason in a healthy democracy. He talks about how the framers of the American Constitution made certain assumptions in their vision of government: that the citizenry, through the printed word, would have access to sufficient information to make sound judgments, and that those judgments would emerge through the exercise of reason. Due to factors Gore makes clear, neither of those assumptions seem to be operating very well in the United States today. He is uncompromising in his indictment of the Bush administration’s violation of logic and crass manipulation of people’s fears. The power of governments to subvert their citizens is something that we, as educators, should be especially mindful of when we teach. One of the greatest pleasures for me in the Grade 12 Academic English course I...
Book of the Month: The Assault on Reason
2007-06-21 06:18:00 Al Gore's The Assault on Reason was released last month, but I only recently decided to pick it up and read it.AN EYE OPENERTo set the record straight, I am a conservative and strongly disagree with many of the policies advocated by Al Gore. But, I found this book to be eye opening and an outstanding reflection of the problems in our society.Gore has excellently managed to shine light on the declining role of reason and common sense in our society. It begins with how television has almost prohibited the voice's of ordinary citizens from being heard, a topic I find highly interesting, and later goes on to attack the President, the Congress and the system.THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PUBLICIn an age when companies and the impact of money largely outweigh the average American's views, the public needs to speak out against this unfair and unreasonable system. I believe that through new and emerging technologies and an increased awareness of the issues among the general population, this actu...
Gore's "The Assault on Reason" Now on Shelves
2007-05-24 02:18:00 The Assault on Reason, the new book from Vice President Al Gore, is now in stores. Though he departs from the firm environmental focus he's shown in recent years, the implications of this work for all US policy - including global warming - is vivid."Why do reason, logic and truth seem to play a sharply diminished role in the way America now makes important decisions?" The persistent and sustained reliance on falsehoods as the basis of policy, even in the face of massive and well-understood evidence to the contrary, seems to many Americans to have reached levels that were previously unimaginable. The truth of the excerpt above is tangible whether discussing the ongoing war in Iraq, or the campaign of deceit being waged by climate change deniers. You can order The Assault on Reason online from Chapters/Indigo or Amazon.
Politics: Gore Blasts Bush in ?The Assault on Reason?
2007-05-23 12:26:00 When former Vice President Al Gore hosted “Saturday Night Live” in December 2002 he appeared in a skit that compared his vice presidential selection process from two years before to the dating reality TV show “The Bachelor.” In one scene Gore appeared in a hot tub with a faux Joe Lieberman, both of them shirtless, ...

Al Gore?s New Book: The Assault on Reason
2007-05-20 22:00:00 Al Gore’s new book The Assault on Reason examines the Western political landscape and its inability to collaborate and to solve global problems. According to the Washington Post, the book’s editor, Scott Moyers, describes the book to be about how “the public arena has grown more hostile to reason,” and how solving problems such as ... |
