The Thing In The Basement: Conclusion.
2008-06-19 09:20:00
And as I died, I felt something pulling, tugging, dragging at me. I actually felt my soul leave my body. I always thought that would be peaceful, although in this case I didn't expect that too much because I had killed my wife and daughter and was going to Hell, but the Thing had not gotten me, at least.I was sucked out of my body, out of the car, through the house, like a handkerchief through a magician's hand.Into the basement. I was thrown, sucked, tossed into the basement, with all those spirits.I landed in the middle, with those other souls lurching and tumbling around me. People who'd hung themselves in the house with ropes still around their neck in the afterworld. One guy who'd slit his wrists, pale and limp and dragging himself by his elbows with his hands flapping uselessly. All milling around and looking at me, some with a little more vitality than others.I looked around and around, bewildered. We all do, when we first get here. It took me a few moments to realize, an...

I saw Melissa, too. I saw the Thing going after her. It held her down and clawed and chewed at her face, shredding and tearing her skin off of her a little at a time.I looked around the room for the Thing as I opened the door. Melissa was only half-turned towards me. Angie had her head buried in Melissa's shoulder. I knew I wouldn't be able to see the Thing, but I thought I might see signs of it, where it was standing, or something. I darted my eyes around and took another step into the room.Angie opened her eyes and saw me. She screamed and wouldn't stop screaming. At that, I heard the rush of blood from the hallway, and felt a wet, cold wash on my feet. I heard Angie screaming and looked around wildly."Where is it?" I yelled. Melissa turned around. I yelled again. "Tell me where it is! Where do you see it?" Melissa yelled something like "see what" but all the things in the room were talking and Angie was screaming and there was the river of blood and my heartbeat and a cackling...
The Thing In The Basement (Six)

Oh, the things we trade. The things we trade away.Like a little kid, trading away a Hank Aaron rookie card for someone else because he doesn't like Hank Aaron as much as that other player who doesn't even stick in his memory anymore, never knowing that the Hank Aaron rookie card would have allowed him to live a life of leisure.Okay, that's not my memory. That one was actually my uncle's. That's the only appearance he'll make in this story, though. My family was not one of the things I traded away for anything. They were just not a big part of my life anymore.Or maybe I did trade them away, because I did move away from them. And I enjoyed where I lived. Days like that one day, about two months after David was born. I was driving to work. I'd begun heading into the office a little more in those days, in part because I was busier, in part because I was trying to avoid the house, and what I'd come to think of as The Thing (I didn't really know where it was at that point. Remember...
The Thing In The Basement (Five)
2008-06-06 16:47:00
That's what I was thinking about, a few months after we moved in, when we were eating dinner together. We were past the pizza-and-cardboard boxes stage. We were eating dinner, a quick dinner of sandwiches. Melissa was about a month away from giving birth to David and we were sitting in the kitchen. Sometimes I could sit there and be fine.Tonight was not one of those nights. Melissa's back was to the bricked-in wall. I was trying to focus on what she was saying, something about the yard, but I couldn't.The bricks were sliding around. They were rearranging themselves. Remember those little puzzles, with fifteen little squares in 16 spaces, in a square, and you would slide the squares around, one at a time into the blank space, trying to make a picture or word or something? It was like that. The bricks were not all the same color or shade; there were variations. Some were redder, some were more variegated or scratched up.And they were sliding around, rearranging themselves quickly an...

Later on, while I'm lying in my car, before I get sucked back in, before I go back in, when I'm nearly nearly dead but not quite so, just nearly so, but after Melissa was already dead (and she got away, I think but I'm not sure) I heard a song.It was The Good Times Are Killing Me by a group called Modest Mouse. It was on the CD player in the car in the garage. Melissa must have left it in there. She always liked music like that.I was lying there, slowly falling asleep, and listening to the lyrics and thinking "How true."But I didn't die for a while. For a long while, as it turns out.I've ended the suspense, right? You know I die. I told you that in the beginning. Melissa dies, too. Don't worry about that. And Angie dies. You don't know Angie yet. Angie was our baby girl, our daughter. She dies, too, but you'll probably get to know her. If I tell you about her.David didn't die. I don't know why. What the Thing In The Basement Gives, the Thing In The Basement Takes Away, right?...

Two: We don't talk about the basement.
2008-05-30 22:51:00
It wasn't always like that. At first, we didn't even know about the Thing In the Basement. When we first found the house, I couldn't believe it. Melissa and I had been looking for a house for almost a year. I didn't make very much money, and we had even less once she became pregnant. I spent all of my time worrying about it. All of the time I didn't spend at my job as a copy editor of a series of local papers. Which was becoming more and more, because (I told myself) we needed the money and because (I told Melissa) they needed me at the office, since I didn't want her to feel like she was the cause of the problem. She wasn't.I would sit, sometimes, at my office, late at night, proofreading a story about a town board meeting, and wonder whether I should even go home. I'd wonder, sometimes, whether I couldn't just go drive the car into the lake. Then I'd shake it off, go home, we'd eat dinner, and go house hunting. So when we pulled up at what would become our house (it's not...

Renting Out The Basement...Again
2008-05-21 21:26:00
Sorry for not posting in awhile. It has been busy and I have been lazy as well. The most recent turn of events is that our tenants downstairs are leaving so I have posted an ad to rent it out again. It is actually a pretty sweet little location. Bus stop out front, newly renovated, two bedroom, 1000 square feet, laundry, large backyard, tons of parking, utilities are included, and the internet is included as well. Don't really need to do anything other than hook up the phone. Hopefully it goes well. We just did some showings today and hopefully do more going into the weekend.Published on Wed, 21 May 2008 12:26:25 MST. - 0 Comments
Wine Cellars Don’t Have To Be In The Basement
2008-04-15 07:00:00
The “average Joe” who occasionally has some wine with dinner or on a special occasion probably doesn’t need a wine cellar. Filling the Basement

This is what our basement looked like before our 2008 Sonoma trip and before the great Reorg of 2008.During our reorg. We pulled out all the wine that was there, and opened all the boxes that arrived yesterday. We organized everything into varietals so that we would find things easier...well, that's the idea. And after! We completely filled up the 9 racks we had, plus a styrofoam case we had been previously using, and had to add 6 more styrofoam shipper halves to contain it all!!Hours later, we are done, and exhausted!

Hiding in the Basement
2008-03-07 13:29:00
Sometimes wine just gets lost in my basement. I don't know how it happens, because I'm fairly vigilant about entering my shipments into CellarTracker as they arrive, but, as you know, the best laid plans....So that is how it came to be that this bottle of 2004 Alderbrook Chardonnay somehow escaped me. It's possible it's been hiding down there for almost 2 years now. I found it the other night when looking for a Zinfandel that I SWORE was down there, but alas, I could not find. Perhaps I have wine elves that move things around just to drive me nuts. Whatever the case may be, this wine had a real cork, clocked in at 13.5% alcohol by volume, and cost us $14.80 either in a club shipment or at the winery. On the nose I found apple, pineapple, slight cream, and oak spice. In the mouth, the wine was crisp with a bit of oak. I got flavors of lemon and apple. This was a simple Chardonnay, not too oaky at all, which is good, I don't much care for the oaky ones, and was an easy wine...

You know I love me some Roseanne (even own most of the series on dvd...will be getting the final two dvds for Christmas), but this is ridiculous. If you decide to "friend" Roseanne on Myspace, these are the bulletins you will find flooding the board. I'm all for people having their opinion. And I'm all for a female version of Michael Moore....but if she's really trying to spread the news about our president elects, then she's going to have to give us actual proof. "Screaming" this information at people is like trying to teach a monkey, the comedy stylings of Paula Poundstone. It wont get through to them. Also, people who think that by "being loud" makes you more right, pisses me off too. Typing in all caps really grinds my gears. My eighth grade English teacher taught me that that should be read screaming (also applies to people's misunderstanding of how to use the exclamation point). With the exception of a couple, ALLLLL of her bulletins are in caps.I'm going to keep her as ...

An Afternoon in the Basement
2007-10-07 01:34:00
Sarah sat on the small couch in her basement, her long shapely legs twisted under her body in a way that only a state champion gymnast's could. Her hair fell straight and glossy to her shoulders and the very tops of her small but perfectly-shaped breasts. She had a very small waist and almost no hips. Her dark red lipstick gave her face sex appeal well beyond its fifteen years. Her best friend Paula sat on the chair in the corner, flicking idly through the channels. Her blue v-neck sweater lay on the back of the chair and her usually hidden breasts pushed hard against her black Hard Rock Cafe tank top. Sarah had been surprised when Paula pulled her sweater off a few hours before to discover her curvy but beautiful body. The narrow waste and hourglass hips and breasts usually lay hidden under a sweater or baggy t-shirt.Paula really had no interest in sex, and Sarah knew that she dressed the way she did to make sure that no one took an interest in her in that way either. Where Sarah h...

Etta James And Sugar Pie Desanto - In The Basement (1966)
2007-09-30 08:30:00
Few R&B singers have endured tragic travails on the monumental level that Etta James has and remain on earth to talk about it. The lady's no shrinking violet; her autobiography, Rage to Survive, describes her past (including numerous drug addictions) in sordid detail. But her personal problems have seldom affected her singing. James has hung in there from the age of R&B and doo wop in the mid-'50s through soul's late-'60s heyday and right up into the '90s and 2000s (where her 1994 disc Mystery Lady paid loving jazz-based tribute to one of her idols, Billie Holiday). Etta James' voice has deepened over the years, coarsened more than a little, but still conveys remarkable passion and pain.Jamesetta Hawkins was a child gospel prodigy, singing in her Los Angeles Baptist church choir (and over the radio) when she was only five years old under the tutelage of Professor James Earle Hines. She moved to San Francisco in 1950, soon teaming with two other girls to form a singing group. Wh...

The Basement: Illicit Hugs and Playground Thugs CD
2007-05-03 00:54:00
The Basement launched amid a mass of praise from the UK's leading music press and with Illicit Hugs and Playground Thugs set for a US release, Americans will get a taste of what NME predicted "will sail way beyond all other pretenders." The Basement name came as a nod to Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues because, as singer / guitarist / songwriter John Mullin says, "the place we were living and rehearsing in was like a basement and Mark (McCausland - guitarist) used to take the piss out of me because of the line in the song that says 'Johnny's in The Basement'. So it stuck." Illicit Hugs was produced by fellow Irishman Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, The Zutons). On it, you can hear a band at the height of its powers - like the Flying Burrito Brothers with hips, like Van Morrison letting loose with some back-street white-boy soul shouting in his essential Them years. The Basement Band Members:John Mullin - Guitar, keys and VocalsMark McCausland -Lead Guitar, keys, stringed instr...

The Basement: The Basement EP
2007-02-25 04:16:00
Review:If you do not know who The Basement is, it's probably because you're not in Europe. The Basement is the new rage from the UK, poised to break the domestic market with their unique line of Irish, blues-tinted indie rock. Mike Crossey, who contributed to the Arctic Monkeys' sensation, picks up another production credit for The Basement's debut release. Since recently finishing a tour of France with M. Ward, The Basement is now turning its focus to the States and planning to bring their catchy amalgam of modern indie-rock aesthetic and the old feel of Irish bar ditties. Simply put, instead of just listening to the music, you'll feel compelled to sing-along with a large group of friends. So go ahead and learn the lyrics now-- because you're sure to hear them at your favorite watering-hole (or home stereo) soon. The Basement Bio:The Basement launched amid a mass of praise from the UK's leading music press. The Basement - Zealous Records
2007-02-10 16:07:03
The Basement are a four piece Irish band that was recently signed to Zealous Records here in the States. They have been creating a fair amount of buzz over in the UK as their release, Illicit Hugs and Playground Thugs, was met with critical praise. The band name stems from the opening line in Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues. Anywho, I picked up their EP off of emusic and came away impressed. The first couple of songs, especially “Do You Think You’re Moving On?” reminded me of Whiskeytown, circa Faithless Street. The EP measures in at just over 13 minutes and its a great listen. They have a confident air about them like they have been around for awhile. Their debut disc, Illicit Hugs and Playground Thugs is set to be released in the States sometime this spring on Zealous Records. In the meantime you can pick up their EP on Itunes and eMusic. Check them out here first. http://www.thebasement.co.uk/ http://www.myspace.com/thebasem-entofficial

Chapter 9: What The Thing In The Basement Does
2006-04-30 19:47:00
It couldn't go on long after that. I knew, you know, everyone knows.I could go on a long time. I could go on forever. I could give you detail upon detail upon detail.I've got nothing but time. But, then, you know that, don't you? You're a good listener. I guess you've got the time, too.But there couldn't be much after that. After that night that I saw the Thing I never saw it again. I never saw the blood, either. I never saw the bricks moving again.I could still hear things. I just couldn't see things. Whatever it had done to my eye, I couldn't see the things I used to.And I couldn't talk about anything, really, but the most innocuous things. I know because I tried. The night before, I tried. The night before what? The night before I killed myself.I was lying in bed, lying awake. I could hear the things rustling around me. I could hear the flowing sound of blood like a river outside my bedroom. I guess I was grateful that I couldn't see them. But I could hear and I didn't like...
You Can't Walk Away From The Thing In The Basement
2006-03-06 04:32:00
Blood. That was what it looked like. After a while, the feelings I would get upon coming home weren't remarkable anymore. And the horror of the accident had faded.David was three when I saw the blood.David was four, and Angie was one, when I no longer noticed the blood because of the birds. But first the blood. It looked like blood. It smelt like blood. It coagulated and crusted up and scabbed like blood.God help me. I can't think of this next part without saying that. God help me, it tasted like blood. What would Melissa have said if she'd seen me? I'd been seeing the blood for a few weeks. Maybe months. I don't know. Time runs together now and it ran together then. I'd first seen the blood trickling down a hallway. A little stream of blood, right down the center of our upstairs hallway, not more than a quarter inch wide. It had reached the end of the hallway and the first step, and was just about to form a full-fledged drop. I saw the drop forming at the end of the stream as I cam...
