WHAT IT MEANS TO STUDY THE BIBLE AS LITERATURE

WHAT IT MEANS TO STUDY THE BIBLE AS LITERATUREA Review of Leland Ryken & Philip Ryken (Editors), The Literary Study Bible, English Standard Version (ESV) (Wheaton, IL: Good News Pubs. [Crossway], 2007) ISBN: 978-1-58134-808-8 1913 pp. $49.99By Forrest Wayne Schultz I first encountered Leland Ryken as an excellent commentator on C. S. Lewis, one of my favorite writers and thinkers. With the passing of Clyde Kilby, Ryken assumed the mantle of the leading American authority on Lewis, and, indeed, quite appropriately, Ryken, is now the Clyde S. Kilby Professor of English at Wheaton College. I learned of Phil Ryken after he became the senior pastor of "Tenth Pres" (The Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, PA), which I discovered by means of a visit to the Tenth Pres website. Tenth Pres was the...

A film by Robert Beckford In 2004, Robert Beckford hosted a documentary called Who Wrote the Bible? in the UK. You can?t preach the Bible here, this is a Muslim area
2008-06-03 12:38:00
England: Two Christian preachers were stopped from handing out Bible extracts by police because they were in a Muslim area, it was claimed yesterday. They say they were told by a Muslim police community support officer that they could not preach there and that attempting to convert Muslims to Christianity was a hate crime. The community officer is also said to have told the two men: 'You have been warned. If you come back here and get beat up, well, you have been warned.'
The Bible is Not a Book of Rules
2008-05-29 07:00:00
I have been contemplating a question that often seems to divide brethren; ‘Is the silence of scripture restrictive or permissive?’ You know all the old arguments….’Can we have a basketball court?’ Some say ‘Yes, the bible doesn’t forbid it!’ Others say, ‘No, the Bible doesn’t mention it!’ and round and round we go. Two groups, equally ...

Women in the Bible
2008-05-20 03:31:00
Many people charge the Bible with denigrating women. I’ve written and podcasted about how the Bible only elevates women. But I realize that I’ve missed something important–the concept of servant leadership. Ephesians 5:22, the famous “Wives, submit to your own husband as to the Lord” verse, the apostle Paul seems to be denigrating women. ...
Dinosaurs, Man, and Galling?s Hypocrisy of The Bible
2008-05-15 06:17:00
Now look at Peter Galling, one of Ham’s cronies’ playing innocent, engaging in bibliolatry, and being a hypocrite with this new approach to responding to a feedback given by an S.T. from Rockport, Texas and L.B. from a somewhat false location (What false location, Galling?), “We thought we?d try something a little different in this week?s response to feedback. Usually, we select one negative feedback to answer, always looking for an emailer who asks a valid question rather than someone just unloading unsubstantiated claims. Recently, we received two relatively similar emails asking about our contention (or the Bible?s contention, as we argue) that dinosaurs and humans lived at the same time. Both authors write as Christians, so we thought this would be a good opportunity to address the question once again and touch on some of the issues it relates to.” The contention of humans and dinosaurs living at the same time is not of the Bible. It’s all made up b...
Photo - Pepsi Mentioned in the Bible

Seeing is believing. In my previous post PEPSI Stands for "Pay Every Pence to Save Israel", I reported that Islamic scientists made the startling discovery that the hidden meaning behind the letters forming the name PEPSI is Pay Every Pence to Save Israel. Now comes visual proof from reader and photo-blogger Edward Cropper from his article Such A Drink I've Never Tasted whose work I reproduce below with his kind permission.

Prove the Bible to me More information has survived about Jesus Christ than most other ancient figures. Yet few historical persons have ever had their existence as questioned and as researched as Jesus Christ. One result of all that research is that information about Christ, from sources other than the Bible, is readily accessible by the common ...
Nancy Pelosi Makes Up Quotes From The Bible
2008-04-25 21:07:00
(link) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is fond of quoting a particular passage of Scripture. The quote, however, does not appear in the Bible and is fictional, according to biblical scholars. In her April 22 Earth Day news release, Pelosi said, The Bible tells us in the Old Testament, “To minister to the needs of God’s ...

A History of the English Bible as Literature (A History of the Bible as Literature)# Author:David Norton # Format:PDF 1.9MB# Page Count: 496 pages# Publisher: Cambridge University Press; Rev Ed edition (May 29, 2000)# Language: English# ISBN-10: 0521778077# ISBN-13: 978-0521778077A History of the English Bible as Literature (revised and condensed from the author's acclaimed History of the Bible as Literature CUP, 1993) explores five hundred years of religious and literary ideas. At its heart is the story of how the King James Bible went from being mocked as English writing to being "unsurpassed in the entire range of literature." It studies the Bible translators, writers such as Milton and Bunyan who contributed so much to our sense of the Bible, and a fascinating range of critics and commentators.
The Best Translation Of The Bible
2008-04-04 07:24:00
Four preachers were discussing the merits of the various translations of the Bible.  One liked the King James Version because of its simple, beautiful English.  Another liked the American Standard Version best because it comes closer to the original Hebrew and Greek.  The third liked Moffatt’s translation best because of its up-to-date terminology. The fourth preacher was silent.  When asked to express his opinion, he replied, “I liked my mother’s translation best.” The other three expressed surprise and wanted to know what he meant. “Well,” he explained, “my mother translated the Bible into her everyday life, and it was the most convincing translation I ever saw.” - Attributed to William Barclay
Some Ways in Which the Bible is Liberal
2008-04-04 07:00:00
The Bible is liberal. That’s a statement that would make most any modern political commentator cringe. I will show you that if the Bible’s laws were implemented in today’s society some modern laws (certainly not all) would actually have to be liberalized to conform to the Bible. Secular people claim that the Bible is an ancient book ...
[Address_Nerd] Eugene E. Snyder and The Bible for Portland Address Geeks
2008-04-01 12:34:00
1458. In the O! section of The Sunday Big O, columnist John Terry penned a very interesting column (which can be read here for 14 days before it goes behind the wall) about downtown Portland's doglegs as the Avenues and Broadway cross Burnside and had some apt words about why that was (Executive Summary: Captain Couch preferred to lay out his streets aligning with the North Star; Lovejoy and Pettygrove's platter preferred to use Magnetic North). Even I, as studied as I was on the subject, relearned something; the downtown trend of blocks aligned on the river actually just so happened. The river itself was too vague to align to; Magnetic North was close enough (at the time, the point-which varies from year to year-was very nearly 20 degrees off true north). We digress. The thing that really touched us about this column was the way Terry referred to a book which is, like this blog, very important but entirely underrated. Eugene E. Snyder's books can be found at Powells and on Ama...

Masturbation and the Bible
2008-03-26 09:44:00
Medical textbooks prior to the 18th Century seldom mentioned masturbation at all. In 1758 a Swiss physician named Tissot published a treatise claiming that masturbation* was the principal cause of mental illness---a terrible sin to be avoided like the plague. In spite of many rebuttals and critiques by contemporaries, Tissot's views became a standard reference found in most all medical textbooks published until the early part of our century. In 1834 Dr. Sylvester Graham wrote that the loss of semen during sex was injurious to health (a popular idea at the time); men, Graham believed, should not have intercourse more than twelve times a year. Masturbation was especially pernicious, he said. To reduce sexual cravings, Graham advised mild foods to decrease sexual appetites. The graham cracker was the result! In 1884, this curious connection between food and sex appeared in another guise. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg created cornflakes to curtail children's inclinations toward masturbation...
President Bartlet And The Bible
2008-03-23 07:03:00

As we have lacked such ability from a president during the Bush/Clinton ...
President Bush Quotes The Bible For Easter
2008-03-22 23:20:00
President George W. Bush published an Easter message yesterday via the White House's press releases, and took to quoting the Bible (nope, no irony there at all). It said, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies. - John 11:25. How's that for politically correct? The message from President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush read as follows.

Review: For the Bible Tells Me So
2008-03-17 18:17:00
For the Bible Tells Me So, a recent documentary by Daniel Karslake is an interesting beast. Through at least the last twenty minutes, my eyes were wet and my nose was running. And though that’s surely a sign of something that’s emotionally resonant, I’m not without reservation in recommending it. After the obligatory footage of traditional views ...

The Catholic Church or The Bible
2008-03-04 13:34:00
Throughout the ages, the Catholic church has continued to evolve into the religious organization that it is today. They have, over time, replaced many of the key doctrines that Christ taught with traditions that counsels and pope's have enacted. The Catholic church has, in general, fallen guilty of the same crimes as the pharisees of Jesus' day. They have crafted a religion based on the philosophies of sinful men rather than relying on the finished work of God's Word. Just as the pharisees, the Catholic Church has fallen hard from where God had once intended."Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men... And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition." ~ Mark 7:7-9The Catholic Church has blatantly replaced God's commandments with their own dogma. For us to make this strong assertion, however, demands that we ...

My emancipation from the Bible cult
2008-02-15 10:43:00
Sent in by NickMy first doubts began when I was 8 or 9, wondering why I never saw the god I was learning about in Sunday School, while he seemed to put in so many appearances in biblical times. Was he really watching our every action from up there in the sky and jotting it all down to be used against us on Judgment Day?Though I was "confirmed" at the age of 18, mainly to please my parents, I was never a religious person, and Christianity never formed a big part of my life, until my 8-month-old daughter died. I received kind, moral support from my Seventh Day Adventist neighbors and this period in my life was the closest I ever got to becoming involved in church activities. But I gradually drifted away, mainly over the requirement to literally believe everything contained in the Bible, though much, obviously, stretched one's imagination. So my doubts grew, though to be quite honest, I really didn't give it all that much thought, nevertheless, I guess you could call me a dormant fence...

VJack Continues Reading the Bible? And Gets It Wrong

William Shakespeare - An Author of the Bible?
2008-02-10 11:56:00
Seems like an outrageous idea — but there are indeed some a strange coincidences involving Shakespeare and Psalm number 46 in the King James version of the Bible. Here s the first: William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564. This tells us that he would have been the age 46 during the year 1611 — for almost 4 months. This was the same year that the King James version of the Bible was published. Secondly, take a look at Psalm 46 from the King James version. What exactly is the 46th word? Psalm 46: To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth. 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea 3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. 4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the mo...
I was conveniently ignoring the not so nice stuff in the Bible
2008-02-10 11:52:00
Sent in by Sandra I was raised by my great-grandmother who during my early years taught the small children in the Mormon church we went to. I was a sickly child so she often read the lessons aloud. So I was reading "Little House on the Prairie" when I was five years old. At the age of eight I was reading from the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible. I was a voracious reader. The library was my favorite playground and curiosity my playmate. And I had questions by the bucketful. I would read the Old Testament and would feel really confused, so around the age of nine I started pestering Mama with many "Why does the Bible say...?" and "Why do we (Mormons) believe...?" Now here is the answer she gave that put my feet down the path of not accepting vague answers. She looked me square in the eyes and simply replied "I don't know." And then we would look stuff up together. Fast forward four years and I am living on my own, pregnant and dumped by baby's daddy. The Mormons excommunicate ...
Shocking Stories From The Bible With Legos!
2008-02-02 08:05:00
As we know the Bible has been interpreted in so many different ways. There are so many shocking and weird stories found in the holy book. For instance, in Numbers 5:20 But if thou hast gone aside to another instead of thy husband, and if thou be defiled, and some man have lain with thee beside thine husband:21 Then the priest shall charge the woman with an oath of cursing, and the priest shall say unto the woman, The LORD make thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when the LORD doth make thy thigh to rot, and thy belly to swell;22 And this water that causeth the curse shall go into thy bowels, to make thy belly to swell, and thy thigh to rot: And the woman shall say, Amen, amen.23 And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out with the bitter water:24 And he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter water that causeth the curse: and the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter. It simply means if a woman who has sex wit...
Learning English through the Bible
2008-01-31 17:04:00
Remember the post where I described my experience at the Students Exchange Programme camp which I took part in when I was in Form 3? Well, two of the facilitators of the above camp were a couple who were with the American Peace Corps. I could not remember their names. They were lecturing at DTC (Day Training College for teachers) at Hamilton Road then. Their rented house was just opposite the college. I visited them a few times after the camp. During one of the visits, the male American gave me a Bible – the New Testament in plain English. It was just like a treasure to me as I liked the English in the Bible. I read through the Bible, understanding most of the words as it was written in plain English. Quite a number of words I learnt from reading the Bible. Later I enrolled for a Bible Correspondence Course to know more about Christianity. All the printed matter that I received helped me to improve in my English greatly.Hence you see, even a Bible can act as a medium for us...
