fear and loathing: the birthday party
2008-05-06 22:24:00 It’ll be a goddamn miracle if we can get there before you turn into a wild animal… All this went down a few years back at a friend’s birthday party, which was kind of themed after the zest of early 70’s. Or the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I was one of the privileged to attend the party - I found the film just a few weeks back and decided to put up a few hazy recollections from that evening. edit: the guy in the picture is missing his left elbow, but I felt like I was missing half a brain.
The Birthday Party
2008-02-27 15:57:00 My mom passed down a birthday tradition to me that I continue in our family. On your birthday you get to pick your dinner and we as a family sit down and eat your favorite meal together. Mandy picked pasta carbinara this year, with warm and buttery buns, she wanted a white cake, with vanilla ice cream & chocolate sauce, and sprite. Lily and I decorated the house with black and white balloons and crept paper. It was a nice dinner, cake and presents.Later, Mandy got the remote control and we all watched American Idol. Haven't seen it in many years. We had a blast. Loved the 70's theme. We all sang along and then between performances we somehow started singing other songs that get stuck in our head. We are all awful singers so it is funny for us to belt it all out. I had a really great time.Mandy works most evenings, so all of us spending an evening together is rare. The last young man to sing was singing John Lennon's Imagine and it brought a tear to my eye. What in the w...
Rediscovery of Lost Gems- The Pop Group
2008-01-30 02:41:00 The Pop Group- YThe Pop Group ranks up there with the Ten Thousand Maniacs as one of the most ironic band names in the history of rock music. This gang of left-wing political radicals from Bristol, England sound more like the antithesis of pop music. "Y" was released on the Radar label in 1979 to little fanfare, but Rough Trade liked the record enough to sign them. "Y" is a cathartic and uncompromising avant garde record that mixed free jazz, art rock, funk, reggae and industrial music. There are very few hooks or decipherable vocals, but the impassioned delivery of lead singer Mark Stewart is undeniable. Highlights include the wildly eclectic "Snow Girl" where agit-funk shares sonic space with stinging guitars and intense piano hammering, "Savage Sea" with distorted vocals layered on top of a propulsive rhythm section with reverb and echo that sounds like lost sessions of Lee Scratch Perry and the caterwauling, free jazz funk of "Don't Call Me Pain" that is reminiscent of an unhol...

The Birthday Party...
2008-01-14 06:40:00 Yesterday was Collette's "official" Birthday Party. Now mind you this was not her first for this year, but it was her "official" one. She had one on Thursday evening (her actual birthday), we took her out to dinner and she was thrilled to death when the wait staff all came over and sang "Happy Birthday" to her. She had another one Saturday evening with both sets of Grandparents and her Nana (Great-Grandma). Her "official" party was held at the local kid hangout here. It's a great big warehouse filled with inflatable slides and jumping houses. They play music really loud and the kids get to jump and slide for 90 minutes. It turned out to be lots more fun than I had originally imagined, most of the adults got in on the act and were having just as much fun as the kids! After your jumping session, they herd you into a room filled with picnic tables and you get to have pizza and cupcakes and open gifts. Collette had a blast! We had the usual relatives come (cousins and their children, C...

My Name Is Earl: The Birthday Party
2007-02-16 11:17:01 I really am pulling for My Name Is Earl. I want it to be good again. But I’m sick of being let down. I’ve been hurt too many times before. It is Earl’s birthday. He is celebrating all the good things he has done this past year. At his party, people are actually focusing on all the bad things he hasn’t fixed yet. That’s a nice enough twist on the show’s original theme. I accept this plot. This is rather fun. It is mostly flashbacks of the terrible things Earl has done. It’s like a clip show, but of stuff we have never seen. And things were crossed off the list! That was Earl’s birthday present. All of his friends forgave him for one thing and crossed it off. You know what? That was a pretty good episode. See? That’s a pleasant surprise. I assumed it would be bad and it turned out good. It doesn’t matter that I was wrong because now I am happy! I’m one of them there cheerful pessimists.
