The Boston Globe Used To Have A Sports Section
2008-04-24 06:54:00 Contrary to popular opinion, we love newspapers. We once waited up outside our dorm for our first ever published article, a review of Woody Allen's Manhattan Murder Mystery. (When the delivery guy showed up, we pretty much attacked him. It was 5:30 a.m., and we were somewhat deranged.) Of course, this makes us a relic;
Summer jobs may be at risk for teens - The Boston Globe
2008-04-16 15:36:00 The sour economy is threatening local summer job programs for city teenagers, a decades-old safety net designed to keep youth off the streets and prevent violence during the bloodiest months of the year. This is bad news for a great program, and this quote "A lot of work sites are telling us, 'We can't take as many,' " because entry-level positions that were in the past filled by high school students are being snapped up by college students, said Aaron Tanimoto, the agency's program director. "You can see how the economy is bumping everybody down," isn't good for high school students anywhere. But people are still posting jobs on myfirstpaycheck.com, and businesses are still hiring. Make a resume, get creative, and go out and find that summer job.read more | digg story
The Globe has called the ski season a wrap for another year
2008-03-28 14:18:00 For some of us, it doesn?t seem like winter is long enough. And while snow is currently falling outside my office window, one of the sure signs of winter has passed for another year. No, Boston isn?t considered a winter wonderland, so to speak, but over the course of the winter, skiers form all over New England pick up the Boston Globe on Thursdays to read the two pages dedicated to skiing and snowboarding. Having returned from a long day a work yesterday, I opened the sport?s section to the last few pages and the Tony Chamberlain articles were missing. There were no black and white photos of skiers or riders with smiles on their faces. I scuffled through the other pages, but to my dismay, it was all Red Sox, Celtics, and NCAA Tournament coverage. Yes, we will be skiing in northern New England for several more weeks, but my Thursday will be a little less anticipated till Tony and the gang returns next fall.

Presidential politics and the price of energy - The Boston Globe
2008-02-05 07:14:00 Presidential politics and the price of energy - The Boston Globe WITH THE economy tanking on the eve of Super Tuesday, what should the presidential candidates candidly be saying about the cost of transforming the energy sector of our economy while still achieving overall economic growth? Over the last 30 years, urgency about energy has been cyclical, sparked by crises abroad and our nation's addiction to oil.In 2007, something fundamentally changed. In large part thanks to former vice president Al Gore, America collectively "greened." The Boston Globe PRESELLS History? It Sure Looks Like It...
2008-01-29 11:58:00 Happy Tuesday! I came across this article at the Yardbarker dot com sports website, and I had a good laugh. Here it is, and then I'll be back with a comment. Remember, these are Gordon Edes' words, not mine. But he IS one of my favorite sportswriters...***Boston Globe Pre-Selling***"Not the way I wanted to start my day. I know I'm sounding paranoid here, but I do believe fully in karma when it comes to sports. I don't bet on my teams (their winning is joy enough) and I don't like to talk sh*t before a game... I don't even rub it in after (well, unless its the Colts, Jets and of course, the Yankees). So you can see why I'm a tad disappointed and upset by an email I got from Amazon.com stating that, "19-0: The Historical Championship Season of New England's Unbeatable Patriots" by the Boston Globe was now available for pre-order. Andy MacPhail Q&A With the Boston Globe
2007-11-26 03:59:00 Earlier today, I posted an entry about Andy MacPhail, and through reading up on things before bedtime, I found a quick Q&A he did with a Boston Globe writer, Nick Cafardo. He mainly answered questions about the state of the Orioles, how the team can improve and also life in American League East.Is this a complete rebuilding time for you in your first year in Baltimore?AM: "I think it's a franchise that has economic wherewithal. If you do get a nucleus of players, it's not like they're going to be rolling off and we can't afford them, like a lot of these clubs. It's a tall order and maybe I didn't fully appreciate how difficult the position is. But that doesn't mean we can't do things a lot better than we've been doing them in the past. We really need to make a concerted effort to rebuild the franchise's foundation - scouting, player development - and be as good at those things as we can possibly be."You've run the Twins (championships in 1987 and 1991) and the Cubs; a...

The Boston Globe, Panama On The Rise: Construction, global interest booming
2007-06-03 21:21:00 Thank You Indira A.R. Lakshmanan for this great artic-le. PANAMA CITY -- Long a freewheeling shipping hub and offshore banking center for the Americas, Panama is enjoying a building boom on a scale unmatched since the construction of its famous canal 92 years ago.The country is luring investors and expatriates worldwide, with interest further boosted by the recent approval of a $5.2 billion plan that will double the canal's capacity.A real estate frenzy fueled by easy credit from Panamanian banks, government incentives, and a saturated US housing market for retirees has attracted speculators and prospective residents from California to Dubai. They are snapping up preconstruction bay-front apartments, highland villas, and the latest luxury development from Donald Trump -- a $220 million residential, office, and hotel complex called Trump Ocean Club, with towers shaped like a yacht sail. Two rival Spanish projects are vying to build the tallest skyscraper in Latin America at about 100... |
