So the Joe Girardi era begins with a New York Yankee-sized problem, as Andy Pettitte, his best big-game pitcher, asks for some extra time to recover from the nightmare of both admitting to taking human growth hormone and essentially calling old buddy Roger Clemens a liar according to John Harper of the New York Daily News. In a way, it's only fitting, partly because Joe Torre annually had some type of controversy greet him at the door for spring training, and partly because no manager in baseball was better at dealing with such issues. Indeed, Torre was best at managing during tough times, whether it was holding his Yankee teams together during periods of poor, uninspired play in recent years, or keeping the inevitable distractions from becoming an issue inside the clubhouse. Girardi has one of those challenges right from the start.

Epstein told a crowd of 1,000 he didn't have to clear his appearance with Hank Steinbrenner, a clear reference to talk that Cashman has to pass decisions through The Boss's son now. I am too stunned to think straight right now. The New York Yankees season is over. The Joe Torre Era in the Bronx might be over. The A-Rod Era in the Bronx might be over. It’s entirely possible, especially if Torre is gone, that several other Yankee stalwarts have played their final game in New York. I’m in disbelief. I was sure the Yankees would win Game 4. Sure that Chien Ming-Wang would pitch well and the Yankees would be playing Wednesday in Cleveland for a berth in the ALCS. That, of course, didn’t happen. The Indians won, 6-4, and will play the Boston Red Sox for the right to advance to the World Series. In New York, it may as well be winter. Another dark, dreary discontented off-season has begun too soon. Right now, I can’t think about all the reasons why this happened. After three straight first-round playoff exits I should be used to this. But, I’m not. The Yankees season is over. The storms around the Bronx, though, are just beginning.

Interesting that Yankee Stadium, home to Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and the Babe choose to run a clip from Sylvester Stallone's Rocky series (? Rocky Balboa) as a point of inspiration for the Bronx Bombers. The clip appears on the center field video late in games.  Rocky is shown sunning (presumably the streets of Philadelphia, not Manhattan), punching beef, and giving his life philosophy of it's not how hard you hit, but it's how many hard hits you take'. Considering Stallone's conviction of anabolic steroid and HGH trafficking in Australia this spring, we wonder if the video inspires the Yanks and opponents to juice away. Spending a lot of time in New York City and being a baseball fan, we often know about the legend of George Steinbrenner and his sometime tenuous relationships with players, coaches and managers. As well, he is often criticized for the Yankees spending and perhaps playing a large role in the financial disparity of franchises in the game today. Well, I have seen George Steinbrenner show a lot of heart to players and with charity work, and yesterday he offered to help out nine victims of a horrific fire that engulfed a Bronx row house in the same vicinity where the Yankees play by paying for their funeral arrangements. Some of us may hate or like Mr. Steinbrenner for his massive ego and theatrics in the past, but he stepped to the plate for a family in a time of need, and you only have to respect what he’s done.
