2008-04-03 21:41:00 I'll admit, I was not planning on starting Dustin McGowan on my numerous fantasy teams against the Yankees tonight. Although a favorite of ours here at "Greener," I decided to see how he handled a tough road start.Whoops. Should have started him.McGowan is through 5 innings at Yankee Stadium, and he has struck out 3 while only giving up 3 hits and allowing 2 walks. On the offensive side of things for Toronto, Alex Rios has a hit, an RBI and a stolen base.IN PROGRESS: BOT 6th TOR 2 NY 0

Welcome to the Bronx Zoo, Joe Girardi
2008-02-14 12:01:00 So the Joe Girardi era begins with a New York Yankee-sized problem, as Andy Pettitte, his best big-game pitcher, asks for some extra time to recover from the nightmare of both admitting to taking human growth hormone and essentially calling old buddy Roger Clemens a liar according to John Harper of the New York Daily News. In a way, it's only fitting, partly because Joe Torre annually had some type of controversy greet him at the door for spring training, and partly because no manager in baseball was better at dealing with such issues. Indeed, Torre was best at managing during tough times, whether it was holding his Yankee teams together during periods of poor, uninspired play in recent years, or keeping the inevitable distractions from becoming an issue inside the clubhouse. Girardi has one of those challenges right from the start.

Who's In Charge in the Bronx?
2008-01-27 10:25:00 Red Sox GM Theo Epstein jabbed rival Brian Cashman of the Yankees during a joint lecture at William Paterson University Friday night, according to Harvey Araton in today's New York Times. Epstein told a crowd of 1,000 he didn't have to clear his appearance with Hank Steinbrenner, a clear reference to talk that Cashman has to pass decisions through The Boss's son now. Steinbrenner Part II has been out front in all Yankee matters since the end of last season, leading to speculation Cashman has been de-fanged. Cashman swears he hasn't been. By Big Mike Glab

Joe Torre & The Bronx Zoo: Still A Candle Twisting Away in The Wind?
2007-10-17 18:05:00 Not to go too deep back into revisionist history; let us hark back to what was said 2 weeks ago when the Yankees were on the verge of their season ending..."His job is on the line," the owner was quoted in Sunday's editions of The Record of New Jersey. "I think we're paying him a lot of money. He's the highest-paid manager in baseball, so I don't think we'd take him back if we don't win this series." -- the words of the "Boss", George Steinbrenner...Well, the Yankees won that Sunday, but got jettisoned out of the pennant chase the following Monday thanks to a loss to the Indians. And a few days later from Brian Cashman....Nearly everyone in New York wanted to know Tuesday whether owner George Steinbrenner will keep his longtime manager or let him go after 12 straight playoff appearances. No answers yet."Have some patience. Things take time. There will be a process and we'll work through that, and it will lead us where it leads us," general manager Brian Cashman said. "My specul...

More About That Team from the Bronx
2007-10-16 06:02:00 IGN Sports' Dan Phillips has come up with a list of recommendations for the Yankees as they try to "right" the 94-win ship, with the premise that "The Yanks should wave goodbye to sentimentality." I can't argue with two of them, ("Let Joe Torre Walk" and "Sign A-Rod") but the other two represent the opposite of good advice:2) Let Jorge Posada WalkPosada is coming off the best season by an aging catcher in baseball history, which is precisely why the Yankees should let some other team get suckered into paying him the big bucks. Aging catchers inevitably break down into mere shells of their former selves, and what's worse, they do it suddenly and without warning. Do you really want to fork over a three-year, 45 million-dollar contract to Posada on the assumption that he'll defy one of the few universal truths in baseball and produce offensively well into his late thirties? Just ask Red Sox fans how that worked out with Jason Varitek. Just one year after signing their oft-injured s...

End of an era in the Bronx?
2007-10-09 17:04:00 With George Steinbrenner giving the ultimatum yesterday, I think it might be time for all us Yankee fans to say goodbye to Joe Torre. The guy who won 4 World Series, 10 divisions, 3 Wild Cards, 6 pennants, and never missed the playoffs while at the helm, appears on his way out as Yankee skipper.

It's hurricane season in the Bronx
2007-10-09 13:28:00 I am too stunned to think straight right now. The New York Yankees season is over. The Joe Torre Era in the Bronx might be over. The A-Rod Era in the Bronx might be over. It’s entirely possible, especially if Torre is gone, that several other Yankee stalwarts have played their final game in New York. I’m in disbelief. I was sure the Yankees would win Game 4. Sure that Chien Ming-Wang would pitch well and the Yankees would be playing Wednesday in Cleveland for a berth in the ALCS. That, of course, didn’t happen. The Indians won, 6-4, and will play the Boston Red Sox for the right to advance to the World Series. In New York, it may as well be winter. Another dark, dreary discontented off-season has begun too soon. Right now, I can’t think about all the reasons why this happened. After three straight first-round playoff exits I should be used to this. But, I’m not. The Yankees season is over. The storms around the Bronx, though, are just beginning.

The Bronx Is Burning, Billy Martin, & the Misleading ?Paternal Abandonment
2007-08-27 19:02:00 I’ve often criticized what one might call the “paternal abandonment script”–the standard assumption that if a father doesn’t remain in his children’s lives after a divorce or separation, it’s because he “abandoned the family” and/or chose to remove himself from his children’s lives. One example is my blog entry Dick Allen & the Misleading ‘Paternal ...
New era begins in the Bronx
2007-08-07 16:51:00 The Joba Chamberlain Era begins in the Bronx today. The New York Yankees are calling up the fireballing phenom to join their beleaguered bullpen. The Yankees are hoping Chamberlain, who features a 97-99 mph fastball, can do for them what Francisco Rodriguez did for the Aneheim Angels in 2002. If you don't recall, K-Rod joined the Angels late in the season, made just a handful of appearances and then was absolutely dominant in the postseason as the Angels won the World Series. The other comparison is Joel Zumaya, the flamethrowing young righty reliever who helped the Detroit Tigers get to the World Series last season.Chamberlain, 21, was only recently moved to the bullpen with an eye on getting him to New York quickly. Along with starter Phil Hughes, he gives the Yankees the most exciting pair of young home-grown pitchers they have had in a long time.Steve Serby of the New York Post sat down with Chamberlain for a Q&A Sunday. Read it here. The move to Chamberlain and Hughes marks a...

The Bronx is burning as Rocky provides juiced inspiration at Yankee Stadium
2007-07-07 14:01:00 Interesting that Yankee Stadium, home to Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and the Babe choose to run a clip from Sylvester Stallone's Rocky series (? Rocky Balboa) as a point of inspiration for the Bronx Bombers. The clip appears on the center field video late in games. Rocky is shown sunning (presumably the streets of Philadelphia, not Manhattan), punching beef, and giving his life philosophy of it's not how hard you hit, but it's how many hard hits you take'. Considering Stallone's conviction of anabolic steroid and HGH trafficking in Australia this spring, we wonder if the video inspires the Yanks and opponents to juice away. How can Bud Selig require Jason Giambi to report to the Mitchell Commission? Heck, Giambi was only following the revered hero, Rocky. Other Yanks under suspicion -- Clemens, Pettite -- might also be only trying to see how many body blows they can survive under the Rock's tutelage. Further, on the night we saw the Yanks, Gary Matthews Jr....

Bedard Stymies the Bronx Bombers 4-0, Rundown
2007-06-28 17:57:00 Last night, the O's defeated the Yankees 4-0, thanks to a masterful performance by Erik Bedard and the power of Aubrey Huff. On an ungodly humid night where the vast majority of fans rooted for the Yankees, O's fans are delighted to have beaten the Bronx Bombers for the 4th time in five opportunities this season. The O's scored in the sixth inning as they teed off of Roger Clemens. Ramon Hernandez drove in a run to start the fun, and then Aubrey Huff (finally!) hit a three run homerun for the exclamation point on Wednesday night.Roger got denied his 350th win, and while he got by on location, grit and determination for the first five innings, he looked like a middle-aged man when it came to the sixth inning.Yet again, Roger was denied win number 350...Erik Bedard looked great at his struck out and had a two hitter going into the eighth inning until he was yanked.Tonight, it is Chien-Ming Wang versus Daniel Cabrera.Seeing games in Yankee Stadium since the mid-1990's (I spent a lot...

However, with Mikey's transference to greener pastures this week, I fear it might have the opposite effect. A New George in the Bronx? [J. Mark English]
2007-05-03 02:20:00 Or is his age and health catching up with him? For sure, the old George Steinbrenner by now would have overreacted to the Yankees sluggish start. But the current George seems to be keeping his hands off the team.Instead, as Tyler Kepner of the New York Times reveals, the Yankees have decided to fire their strength coach, Marty Miller:A day after the Yankees? baffling run of hamstring injuries claimed another victim in Phil Hughes, the team fired its new strength coach. Marty Miller, who was hired last winter to the newly created position of director of performance enhancement, was let go on Wednesday. "It got to the point where the perception is there's a problem here," General Manager Brian Cashman said. Howard Rubenstein, the spokesman for principal owner George Steinbrenner, referred questions to Cashman. Hughes, 20, was working on a no-hitter when he severely strained his left hamstring while throwing an 0-2 curveball to the Rangers? Mark Teixeira with one out in the seventh ...

Make-Up Sex In The Bronx
2007-04-25 01:35:00 Yea, so in case you haven't noticed Arod seems to have temporarily gotten back together with Yankees fans everywhere this April. For those of you who are oblivious to the sports world he is hitting .400 with 14 HRs, 34 RBIs, and a .453 OBP...slightly amazing.Just for fun this morning in AP English I was doing some computing and it is worth noting that right now Arod is on pace to hit:.400 with 126 HRs, 306 RBIs, with a .453 OBP. I'd say those would be MVP type of numbers and probably would break just a couple records. So as the sports world (Yanks fans especially) is/are going crazy with this right now and there is something that I wanted to talk about. I know what it's like to be an avid baseball fan and all, and I'm still jacked about Prince's game-winning bomb last night but Yankees fans need to wake up! As they obsess over Arod's stats and performance as if they had never doubted him since he dawned pinstripes their team is a pathetic 8-10 and is nearly in the cellar of the...

George Steinbrenner Comes to the Aid of Victims of a Fire in the Bronx...
2007-03-10 13:17:00 Spending a lot of time in New York City and being a baseball fan, we often know about the legend of George Steinbrenner and his sometime tenuous relationships with players, coaches and managers. As well, he is often criticized for the Yankees spending and perhaps playing a large role in the financial disparity of franchises in the game today. Well, I have seen George Steinbrenner show a lot of heart to players and with charity work, and yesterday he offered to help out nine victims of a horrific fire that engulfed a Bronx row house in the same vicinity where the Yankees play by paying for their funeral arrangements. Some of us may hate or like Mr. Steinbrenner for his massive ego and theatrics in the past, but he stepped to the plate for a family in a time of need, and you only have to respect what he’s done.

Return of the Bronx Zoo
2007-02-18 16:05:00 Spring Training has barely begun, and already the New York Yankees are in midseason form when it comes to grabbing back-page headlines in the New York tabloids.Let's recap what we've read about already. Will A-Rod stay or won't he? Alex Rodriguez is always in the middle of something, and this year it started before camp even opened. A-Rod can opt out of his contract at the end of this season and leave the Yankees if he wishes, and he's already caused a firestorm by not denying he might do just that. This is a story that will stick around all season.Bye, bye Bernie? Will Bernie Williams come to camp or won't he seems to be a daily storyline. Bernie, and Yankee fans, seem insulted by the team's offer of an invitation to camp rather than a guaranteed roster spot. If he actually does show up, which seems unlikely, Joe Torre will have to answer questions about him all spring.'Mo' wants respect. Mariano Rivera, in the last year of his contract, caused more controversy in two days t... |
