Is it difficult for expatriates to live in the bush?
2008-05-04 15:29:00
Basically it is. But then it depends on how you look at things and what your personal needs and desires are. And then how do we define "bush"? To some it is simply that, bush. Somewhere in Africa, or in the Terra del Fuego in South America. Or around the polar circle. Perhaps a hidden, far away valley in Afghanistan? Let's settle for a place which simply is not easily accessible. A place where one has to go through a lot privations and where things are not very available. And believe me, about 30 years ago many capital cities were bush also.I have no problem to be in the bush. I am used to it. I have lived in the bush for many years. But it was not always like this. My first experience was actually quite disturbing. When I left Switzerland to go to Rwanda I was all excited. But the excitement did not last very long. When you are young, living in a country where you get everything and three days later you are in a country where you get nothing, the shock is big. It was for me. Thoug...

The Bush Family's Bad Latin Real Estate Investment
2008-05-03 09:20:00
by Dave Lindorff Back in late 2006, it was widely reported in the Latin American media that President Bush, or perhaps his old man, had bought a 100,000-acre farm in a remote area of Paraguay. What struck people at the time was the choice of country. Paraguay, of course, has gained a certain Club Med status among the world's villains and criminal elements as the place to go when the law's on your tail. The country, ruled for six decades by the dictatorial and fascist Colorado Party of Gen. Alfredo Stroesser, an almost cartoon charicature of a Latin American dictator, has no extradition treaty with any nation. That's why it has long harbored aging Nazis, bank robbers, and a string of ousted or retired Latin American dictators and their assistants over the years. Given that President Bush, once he leaves office on January 20, 2009, will no longer have the diplomatic immunity conferred upon heads of state, or the Constitutional protection against indictment by domestic prosecuto...

2008-04-26 09:30:00
From: The Lie Factory   It's a crisp fall day in western Virginia, a hundred miles from Washington, D.C., and a breeze is rustling the red and gold leaves of the Shenandoah hills. On the weather-beaten wood porch of a ramshackle 90-year-old farmhouse, at the end of a winding dirt-and-gravel road, Lt. Colonel Karen Kwiatkowski is perched on a plastic chair, wearing shorts, a purple sweatshirt, and muddy sneakers. Two scrawny dogs and a lone cat are on the prowl, and the air is filled with swarms of ladybugs. So far, she says, no investigators have come knocking. Not from the Central Intelligence Agency, which conducted an internal inquiry into intelligence on Iraq, not from the congressional intelligence committees, not from the president's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. All of those bodies are ostensibly looking into the Bush administration's prewar Iraq intelligence, amid charges that the White House and the Pentagon exaggerated, distorted, or just plai...
The Bush Team's Geneva Hypocrisy
2008-04-26 08:18:00
by Jason Leopold Newly released U.S. government documents, detailing how Bush administration officials punched legalistic holes in the Geneva Convention’s protections of war captives, stand in stark contrast to the outrage some of the same officials expressed in the first week of the Iraq War when Iraqi TV interviewed several captured American soldiers. Then, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, President George W. Bush and other administration officials orchestrated a chorus of outrage, citing those TV scenes as proof of the Iraq’s government contempt for international law in general and the Geneva Convention in particular. “It is a blatant violation of the Geneva Convention to humiliate and abuse prisoners of war or to harm them in any way. As President Bush said yesterday, those who harm POWs will be found and punished as war criminals,” Pentagon spokeswoman Victoria Clarke said on March 24, 2003. That same day, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz told the BBC th...

Light Bulb Change and the Bush Administration
2008-04-15 12:49:00
How many members of the Bush administration does it take to change a light bulb?1. One to deny that a light bulb needs to be changed;2. One to attack the patriotism of anyone who says the light bulb needs to be changed;3. One to blame Clinton for burning out the light bulb;4. One to arrange the invasion of a country rumored to have a secret stockpile of light bulbs;5. One to give a billion dollar no-bid contract to Halliburton for the new light bulb;6. One to arrange a photograph of Bush, dressed as a janitor, standing on a step ladder under the banner: Light Bulb Change Accomplished;7. One administration insider to resign and write a book documenting in detail how Bush was literally in the dark;8. One to viciously smear #7;9. One surrogate to campaign on TV and at rallies on how George Bush has had a strong light-bulb-changing policy all along;10. And finally one to confuse Americans about the difference between screwing a light bulb and screwing the country.

The Bigfoot of the Bush?
2008-03-27 05:42:00
The creature often known as "Bigfoot" goes by many names. In the United States, it is often referred to as Sasquatch in the North and Skunk Ape in the South. In the Himalayas, the Yeti. But what about Yowie?Yes: on the remote island of Australia, there have been reports of the same enigmatic beast. There, he is commonly referred to as the Yowie. And like anywhere else in the world, the tales are often met with skepticism and plenty of humour. Yet much of the Australian Outback is still uncharted. Many beasts once believed to be extinct (or yet to be discovered) could roam the countryside.According to researchers, Oz is home to two distinct species of Yowie: a smaller, more docile 'jingera' of Aboriginal legend, and a gigantic, aggressive counterpart. The basic description remains the same: large, hairy, ape-like humanoid creatures with immense strength and horrid body odor. A few reports from the 1800s exist, and people have reported seeing an ape-like creature as recently as last ...

What the Bush Junta Rejected in Dismissing Fallon
2008-03-21 20:40:00
Unlike his Arabic-speaking predecessor, Army General John Abizaid, Fox Fallon wasn't selected to lead U.S. Central Command for his regional knowledge or cultural sensitivity, but because he is, says Secretary of Defense Gates, "one of the best strategic thinkers in uniform today."If anything has been sorely missing to date in America's choices in the Middle East and Central Asia, it has been a strategic mind-set that consistently keeps its eyes on the real prize: connecting these isolated regions in a far more broadband fashion to the global economy. Instead of effectively countering the efforts of others (e.g., the radical Salafis, Saudi Arabia's Wahhabists, Russia's security services, China's energy sector) who would fashion such connectivity to their selfish ends, Washington has wasted precious time focusing excessively on transforming the political systems of Iraq and Afghanistan, as though governments somehow birth functioning societies and economies instead of the other w...

The Protect The Bush Administration Act
2008-03-16 21:16:00
So far the House has defied Bush on telecom immunity. Those left right wingers over at CATO have been explaining why they should continue to do so. The current FISA act gives the government all the power it needs to wiretap people it should be wiretapping while making it difficult to wiretap those it shouldn't be. The Bush administration doesn't want the telecoms to go to court because it was wiretapping groups or individuals it shouldn't have. The New York Times finally gets it:The Intelligence Cover-Up For more than two years now, Congress, the news media, current and former national security officials, think tanks and academic institutions have been engaged in a profound debate over how to modernize the law governing electronic spying to keep pace with technology. We keep hoping President Bush will join in.Instead, the president offers propaganda intended to scare Americans, expand his powers, and erode civil liberties ? and to ensure that no one is held to account for the ill...

Is the Bush Administration switching horses in Lebanon?
2008-03-14 06:28:00
by Franklin Lamb in Beirut Ditching the 'Victor' of Nahr el Bared for "Dr Death"? Barack v. Hillary isn't the only Presidential election game in Washington these days. There is also the Samir v. Walid v. Michel (as in Geagea, Jumblatt and Suleiman) campaign underway as each seek through direct contact and surrogates, the US imprimatur in their quests to lead Lebanon. This week it appears that Walid's support is dropping faster than Hilary's and Suleiman may end up like Fred Thompson ("failed to live up to expectations and not enough fire in the belly for the job") and Geagea is skyrocketing faster than Barack did in February. How so? Despite months of heaping praises on Head of the Lebanese Army General Michel Suleiman, the Bush Administration has pretty much decided to dump the General, for reasons noted below by US Congressional sources. Following successful visits by Druze leader Walid Jumblatt over the winter, the Bush administrat...

The Bush legacy
2008-02-13 03:09:00
The following developments constitute the Bush policy (good & bad):The Bad:Rising inequality: The top 1% pulled ahead of the bottom 99%, with its share of income as large as in 1928 and twice as high as in 1979. Between 2004 & 2005 the mean after-tax income of the top 1% increased by $146,000, while income for the average American remained stangnant (see below).Stagnant incomes: Median household and personal income remained stagnant. Meidan household income was at $48,000 in 2006, compared to $48,000 in 1998 (when adjusted for inflation).Rising poverty: Poverty & the percentage of uninsured rose slightly, the fromer from 10.2% in 2000 to 12.3% in 2006 and the latter from 13.7% in 2000 to 15.8% in 2006.Waste: Tax cuts cost $1.2 trillion but didn't spur growth, accounting for 51% of all new debt that created the record deficit. He also created the Dept. of Homeland Security, which wasn't needed; the funds could have been put to better use if given to the FBI & CIA di...

The Bush Legacy?
2008-01-27 06:04:00
Almost immediately upon George Bush taking office most on the left started frothing at the mouth. This grew and grew amongst those on the left to the point that it was given a name. Political author and pundit Charles Krauthammer named this hatred of George Bush "Bush Derangement Syndrome", sometimes called "BDS", and it is displayed by the hard core left even to this day. I suspect that there will be many still enraged by his memory years after he has left office. That said I have to admit that I am not a fan of George Bush. But for me this has been a gradual process rather than the instant hatred adopted by the left. Initially I was quite the Bush supporter. But eventually some cracks started to appear in the Bush administration fascade. For most on the left it was the invasion of Iraq. For me it was his attempts at opening our borders to the invading hordes from Mexico. And the one thing that really drove all concerned crazy about Bush was that he just did not...

The Bush Dollar Trap
2008-01-23 13:53:00
by Dave Lindorff The first government response to America's sinking economy was denial. We were told as recently as a month ago by administration officials and Wall Street charlatans that the economy was robust and that there would not be a recession. Now we are told that the economy is in trouble, but that the government is taking decisive action to shore it up. We saw how effective the first "decisive" proposal was. Bush announced a plan to give every adult taxpayer (no poor people, thank you) $800 in a tax rebate this April. The stock market responded to this idea by dropping a few percent. The idea, as I wrote in my last column, was stupid to begin with because, with the US no longer producing much of anything, all that bonus borrowed cash would end up getting spent on imported goods anyhow, doing next to nothing for the US economy. So now the Federal Reserve has weighed in with a 3/4 percent cut in the Federal Funds rate. Even though commercial banks followed sui...
Seven years of the Bush economy
2008-01-22 01:01:00
Yesterday marked seven years since George W. Bush took office. And one year from today someone else will spend their first full day as President and look over a far different country than the one that President Bush inherited the seat of power of on January 20, 2001. In Biblical times (and more recently as apprenticeships) seven years was the standard period of servitude, and after seven years it was long enough to assess whether someone had done a good job or a poor one. I could do a very broad post, touching on everything from war to crime and academic performance, but I will limit this post to looking at that most basic of issue, the economy (which ultimately is what everything else sooner or later rides on). The fact of the matter is that today, on the seventh anniversay of President Bush's inauguration, the Bush record on the economy is just not good. Some years have been better or worse but let's just look at the whole. Taking a look at some numbers: On January 20, 200...

A 2-Step Solution to Reverse the Bush Recession
2008-01-18 01:24:00
by Stephen P. Pizzo Washington seems to have discovered what we've been talking about here for over three years — that the Bush tax cuts for the rich didn't work as advertised. Of course, we knew they wouldn't work when they were passed way back in 2001 As I've written so many times my fingers cramp just thinking about it... economies are not stimulated from the top down, but from the bottom up — by consumers, not producers. Very little of the money generated by tax cuts for top earners ever trickles down in ways that result in higher earnings and spending by consumers. In reality it works exactly the other way. Cut the payroll tax for working Americans. That immediately puts more money in the hands of people who are already having trouble making ends meet. Consumers spend most or all that extra money in each paycheck. That in turn generates more demand for goods and services, which spurs hiring at the companies that produce them. Those companies then have to hire...

Can The Bush Tax Cut Work?
2008-01-17 00:02:00
After weeks of increasingly dismal reports from the financial sector, many regular Americans are beginning to worry that the US may be close to or already in recession. While government intervention in the economy is relatively uncommon in US history, since its establishment in the 1930's, the Federal Reserve has been able to manipulate interest rates, giving them the power to make all real estate loans more or less expensive by some degree, which comes with a hefty responsibility: controlling inflation. While the Fed has cut their rate three times in as many months last quarter, the economy also began to tailspin simultaneously. This puts them up between a rock and a hard place, because if interest rates are too low, inflation can begin to threaten, especially as the dollar continues to depress against other currencies. Fortunately, there is one part of the economy that the government is able to adjust in order to make ordinary American's pockets a bit less bare: taxes. President...
My Life in the Bush of Ghosts
2008-01-16 08:47:00
One of the benefits of moving house is that it forces you to go through your stuff. Yesterday I dug out a box of cassettes, many probably unplayed for over 2o years. One of the treasures was My Life in the Bush of Ghosts by David Byrne and Brian Eno. I remember thinking that it was a revelation when I heard it for the first time. The musical collage of electronic sounds overlayed on real world speech and singing is dramatic. It was considered ground breaking at the time and influenced many other musicians. After getting over the issue of what a cassette tape was, the kids settled down to listen in the car as we drove to sports camp. At the end, they asked to hear it again because they really liked it. Some of the tracks reminded me of the computer games that Ryan loves to play. All very familiar given the number of times I played it in the 80s.It was rereleased recently with new tracks and some politically correct edits to address concerns by Islamic Groups who objected to singing t...

The US dollar will be toilet paper after Bush is done with it.We will never pay off this debt.Any country or individual who buys US debt is a fool. And you should all be sickened (and frightened) by the corrupt leaders in DC on both sides of the aisle. At the very time we needed competent leadership with a firm grip on the wheel, we get The Worst President Ever - the most reckless, ignorant, corrupt, misguided and destructive president in the history of the United States. If our wildly unpopular leaders in DC send out $500 rebate checks before the November election in a desperate attempt to keep hold of power, American should rise up, take their $500 checks for supplies, and do what the Declaration of Independence tells them to do in times like these. But of course they won't - America's Top Model is on ya know.God help us all - and your kids' kids' kids' kids who will be suffocating under the debt run up by this selfish, greedy and disgusting generation.Future Americans will hat...
