Congress, candidates call credit card companies on the carpet
2007-12-04 16:54:00 Just in time for the holiday season, the 110th Congress has renewed its push for credit card companies and lenders to clean up their act. Michigan Democrat Carl Levin, who sits on the Senate’s Homeland Security and Gov’t Affairs Committee, is chairing a hearing today on unfair credit card interest rate hikes, featuring three financial industry bigwigs against three undoubtedly angry consumers. (Fun fact–Bank Of America Card Services prez Bruce Hammonds used to be president of MBNA, widely recognized as one of the most egregiously evil card companies in the business, until Bank of America swallowed them whole.) Levin and fellow Senator Chris Dodd previously called credit card companies out for hearings in January of this year, which led the financial industry to voluntarily end some of their nastier credit card practices (such as “double-cycle billing” and “universal default”) to avoid being grilled or regulated on Capitol Hill. Levin, alo...

Men's Health and HIV/AIDS in the Black Communities of Africa and the Caribb
2007-12-04 00:27:00 Men's Health: By Kermit B. Fernander, Guardian Lifestyles Reporter - Nassau, Bahamas: Wow! World AIDS Day is here again! And, while HIV/AIDS is very much a problem the world over, it is highest in the black communities of Africa and the Caribbean, which geographically speaking, of course, includes The Bahamas. Sadly, despite the heroic efforts of HIV/AIDS Program director Nurse RosaMae Bain and her team to get Bahamians to become serious about this very preventable disease, Bahamian people - our men especially - continue to believe that HIV/AIDS could never happen to them. They remain "in denial" of the reality of HIV/AIDS while they continue to become infected and to infect others - particularly their female partners. It is worth noting that people in denial of HIV/AIDS tend not to want to discuss HIV/AIDS, or read or hear about it. Perhaps this is their way of coping with their underlying fear of HIV/AIDS. It also helps them not to think about their powerlessness at pra...

Telltale Signs/ THE CARICATURE COUP
2007-12-02 20:00:00 Trillanes, Lim and Guingona at the Manila Peninsula Hotel Rodel E. RodisThe 1986 People Power revolution that brought down the Marcos Dictatorship was instigated by the foiled coup attempt of a group of soldiers called the Reform the Armed Forces Movement (RAM) led by an ambitious young colonel named Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan. Although the RAM coup attempt failed, the government’s subsequent move to crush it resulted in the People Power overthrow of the Marcos Dictatorship.Because the Philippines is a nation of copycats, young “idealistic” military officers have since sought to copy the RAM example. Including the last one on November 29, 2007, there have been at least thirteen abortive coups since 1986: nine against President Cory Aquino from 1986 to 1989 and four (so far) against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo since 2001.The most serious coup attempt was the one that nearly toppled Aquino in December of 1989 and involved the military occupation of several hotels in Ma...

Ban spanking in the US? It?s probably not in the cards.
2007-12-01 22:34:00 Massachusetts state representative Jay Kaufman has introduced a bill in the state legislature to, effectively, ban parents from spanking their children. Naturally, the bill is not expected to pass, or even come close to passing. Hitting children is a deeply cherished cultural norm in the US, and despite the fact that many Western European countries have banned the practice, a 2002 ABC poll shows there is still widespread American support for it. Studies on both the good and ill effects of spanking conflict. Most of the studies I could locate appear to be done by people or organizations with axes to grind, so the results are suspect. Others had methodological problems, some of them severe. Just defining “spanking,” let alone defining spanking context or being able to measure and track that context, presents issues that may never be fully resolved by a longitudinal study. On the other hand, studies on the effects of physical abuse of children (child beating and torture, to...

2007-11-29 01:41:00 Are you one of the good people who have some credit problem in your past or present? Well here is a lesson for you: Bad credit is more common than you think. There is good news however - More and more lenders are going after the bad credit market causing the interest rates to lower for all consumers. That last time I used my credit card, I kicked myself. You see, I'm trying out this whole negative reinforcement thing. Anyway, the point is that we should try not to spend so much and start saving more. Maybe what's in order is a financial planning education course. Read more about finance and credit cards.

Some Europeans are using the car more, even when it?s not necessary
2007-11-28 03:11:00 When thinking about Europe you might think about the bikes in Amsterdam, the widespread use of mass transit systems, toll roads, high gas prices, small cars. These images are something that you might need to reconsider, at least for one European country: Spain (although all Europeans are driving more).Spaniards have become the laziest Europeans and use their cars more than anyone else in the EU. While it's a large country with an underdeveloped railway system (except for a couple of subway networks), gas prices are almost the lowest in Europe (if curious, check them here). Need some numbers to back all this up? 75 percent of cars in Spain run with only one person inside. 30 percent of pollution in Spain comes from transport. 40 percent of the land designated for new construction there is set aside to build roads. Spaniards, more than citizens of any other country in the EU, use their cars for short trips of only 2 to 3 km (1.2 to 2 miles). These are just some figures which are being...
Bob Lutz on winning the Car of the Year
2007-11-27 21:31:00 At the L.A. Auto Show earlier this month, the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Two-Mode Hybrid won the Green Car of the Year award. Carlist's Lou Ann Hammond got a chance to ask Bob Lutz what he thinks about being nominated (and then winning) this award. She's posted a video of that conversation over on the site. So, what does "Maximum" Bob Lutz have to say about this award? The nomination can help move public opinion towards thinking that GM is a green automaker, but the company is still at a 3 or 4 on a scale that goes up to 10. What would move them to a 6 or a 7, Hammond asks?"If we can put the Volt into production tomorrow and start selling 60,000 to 70,000 a year that would definitely do it," Lutz answers. Watch the rest of the conversation here. [Source: Carlist]
The Cardiac Feud: DeBakey Vs. Cooley
2007-11-27 06:28:00 I wouldn't call myself a history buff, but I enjoy reading about the past - especially about medicine. In today's New York Times, it tells the tale of what apparently was a huge feud in medicine - specifically cardiac medicine - for four decades. For me, the most controversial medical issue I remember learning about was the discovery of the AIDS virus and the two people who tried to get the credit for that. But, this cardiac feud is one of the best historical stories that medicine has. Both these surgeons were pioneers in the area of cardiac surgery working in Houston. And, for 40 years, these two gentlemen spoke little to each other and couldn't even stand to be in the same room after "the incident." What happened? Here it is from the NYT:The breach began in 1960, when Dr. Cooley left Dr. DeBakey?s practice at Methodist and moved the few hundred yards to St. Luke?s Hospital, where he later established the Texas Heart Institute. But it was an incident in 1969 that turned the rift ...

Lessons in tsunami procedure on the cards -- literally -- at Iwate school
2007-11-26 00:00:00 IWATE -- A card game aimed at teaching players about the dangers of tsunami was revived by elementary school children here. The game was originally devised half a century ago by local meteorological officials in Iwate Prefecture, an area often struck by tsunami. In 1933, more than 2,000 people died when a big tsunami hit the region. So in 1957, the Morioka Local Meteorological Observatory came up with the idea of producing a 48-card karuta (card-matching) game, whose words ...
