The real science bashers are found in the Church of Global Warming
2011-08-30 16:36:00 Today I am writing about religion. Specifically, about those who worship in the Church of the Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming. More specifically, about those who, as a matter of faith, believe that the science of climate change is settled. These believers preach that mankind is steering the planet onto an irreversible and cataclysmic course unless... Read more »
Women in the Church Compared to Homosexuals
2011-08-09 04:34:00 I was over at Shirley Taylor?s blog this morning, and she had written a piece called ?They?ve stolen Jesus!? The quotes she mentioned are patronizing, and shows the low opinion of the ?other? gender. They can claim all they wish about how they LOVE women, but no offense I don?t wish to have their type of love. If you look past the sugary spiritual pixie dust so many use instead of speaking in plain English? The patronizing attitude is clear. We all know by now I suppose that supporters would RUSH to their defense, and say things like how they are misunderstood, etc. How scripture is clear in their eyes as far as women in certain positions within the church. What they don?t do? Is separate their ?belief?, and listen very closely to how it is being presented. All these years of being ?misunderstood?, and yet you see no true effort to clarify these things. Its tells you something. We all have...
New Language, New Mass Settings ... But Will It Fill the Church?
2011-06-24 15:00:00 My husband and I talk a lot about our Church and where it's headed. With the new language to be implemented at Advent and the talk of using more Gregorian chant for the Mass settings, we both often find ourselves scratching our heads and wondering, "Why?"Will these changes really bring people to our faith? Will it bring those who have left it back? Will it keep the young people, who after 8 or 12 years of Catholic education, suddenly stop going to church altogether? As Bishop Fulton Sheen said, "I tell my relatives and best friends, 'If you want your children to fight for their faith, send them to public school. If you want them to lose their faith, send them...
Half The Church
2011-06-24 13:00:00 I was listening to a broadcast on Moody radio today, and they were speaking to the author Carolyn Custis James. Her book I pictured here today is called, ?Half the Church?. She was speaking to the women ministry in the church. I uploaded the program if you are interested in listening. Carolyn Custis James starts with Genesis, and how it seems to her that the genders are to work together. (6:15) I like how she called us God?s A-Team as far as image bearers! I will summarize some of it for you, but I?m sure I missed TONS! Half The Church Moody Program upload link! How decisions and discussions are richer once you use the prospective of both men and women. When men and women come together, and value what each brings to the table then decisions tend to be better (7:50). Its not a matter of whom is better or worse. Its not the competition that we seem to be taught, and yet I realize that isn?t what they would call it. Women see ...

The Church of George Michael
2011-03-08 03:22:00 For the last week or so, I've been thinking about faith. Not only for how important it is, but how hard it can be. For those of you like me, relinquishing control to something you don't know or trust, like chance, is really scary. I like making decisions and knowing outcomes. But that's when we have to remind that when that faith is in yourself, chance is a lot less scary - and if you let it, exciting. And should you struggle to keep that faith, it's OK to turn to those that always have it for you. And in my case, check my mailbox more often. ...

Tarek El-Bishry Speaks about The Church And Citizenship
2010-10-25 14:38:00 I wondered where Tarek El-Bishry was from all that sectarian tension that happened from weeks ago , a thinker who has a huge contribution like him about citizenship and interfaith dialogue should have an opinion about that circus. In three parts Op-ed Al Shorouk daily published on three days Tarek El-Bishry shares with us what he thinks about that sectarian tension which ghost is still roaming around. El-Bishy is speaking about the state inside the state represented in the Church and its stand against the state and the citizenship in its own way. Unfortunately both parts are in Arabic and they are long too. Tarek El-Bishry writes about the Church leadership ?1-3" Tarek El-Bishry writes about the Church leadership "2-3" Tarek El-Bishry writes about the Church leadership "3--3" Of course what he thinks will not like the radical Christians at all and already they have began to attack him , it is something expected. Fear Tactics within the Church
2010-07-31 01:12:00 I was looking at my grandmother?s collapsible metal cup she had for years as I was growing up the other day. I was putting dishes away, and saw it on the top shelve. I grabbed years ago when I was cleaning out my grandparent?s house, and it reminded me of all the trips we took together. When my brother or I would WHINE in the backseat, ?Mimi! We are thirsty!? she would take it out and pour us some water. Mimi was the type that followed her husband?s leadership, and did her best to respect his authority within the home. I recognize the speeches I hear about the roles within marriages, because she grew up in that type of circle. I will admit they didn?t call them ?roles?, and back then they were more in your face about the roles. I see the same speeches today, but they more ?nice? about the definitions. I have to giggle if those darn feminists made people realize how ugly it truly sounded, and it forced them to change their approach a bit. ...
Is the Church Dead? Is America Lost?
2010-07-07 18:00:00 No to both questions. We humans have a tendency to take things for granted. It's our nature. If the ground has been there all along, we expect it to be there tomorrow. We tend to do the same with our Church activities. From the outside, it would seem the church is dying.Just as in family. We may squabble among ourselves but let an outsider try to harm one member and watch the whole family stand up.The same thing happens in our churches. We become lazy, skip a few Sundays, let life make us too busy. Something happens on the outside, to make us feel threatened in any way and we come flooding back into the flock.I'm watching the same thing happen to my country. We sat back and let those hard working left wingers take our country right down the sewer before the hair finally stood up on the back of our necks. You will see the true America in action, over the next few years, as we stand up and defend what is ours.Poor left wingers. They always think they've won, when in actuality they'v...
Putting Politics Aside, Where is the Church?
2010-06-15 20:56:00 When it comes to politics and faith I find a lot of Christians fall into one of two categories particularly when it comes to social issues: The church should care for the needs of the people (more republican leaning) or The church should influence the government to care for the needs of the people (more democrat leaning). Generally speaking, in theory, many agree that it’s a Christian thing to care for those in need, Christians just differ on how. But, then here is the crazy thing to me: both sides ...

5 articles dealing with domestic violence and the church
2009-12-11 15:40:00 Why is Loving You Hurting Me?, by Frederick D. Haynes III is a very touching article about domestic violence in the church. He speaks very clearly about the silent on this issues, and the suffering of those that we pretend are not there. Well, let me see if I can make this plain by focusing the lens even more. There is no sadder story than the one of Tamar, found in the thirteenth chapter of second Samuel. Tamar is the daughter of King David, and Tamar happens to be extremely beautiful, yet, Tamar soon discovered that the beauty she had going for her ended up being used against her. I think I'll park here, parenthetically, because for some of you, what you have going for you has been sadly used against you. Perhaps it's the way God has blessed you to look; perhaps it's the education you have been blessed to achieve; but whatever the case, it is some gift that God has blessed you with, that sadly, has turned out to be something that haters and others are using against...

Zero-Tolerance on Domestic Violence Within the Church
2009-10-27 19:17:00 Creekside Ministries wrote an article Called, A Zero Tolerance Level. I have to tell you in my little naive world as a same child? I always assumed that the church 'had that' no questions asked because that is how it is there! When I grew older I knew there were taboo subjects that you need to approach lightly. In the environment that I grew up in? I already felt I wasn't capable of it, or so I thought. I would throw out small hints, and if they didn't follow up? I just wasn't justified. When I grew to an adult I knew some subjects you just didn't bring up at all, unless you could show you are almost a Saint! They were going to look at my every move, attitude, and it seemed to me like a hunting trip for that one sin they could hang their hat on. The Ministries first quote: I have a zero-tolerance level for abuse in any form. It is always sin. It is a completely inappropriate reaction to stress, frustration, demands, disappointments, others' behavior. There are no e...

The Condition of the Church
2009-09-04 19:03:00 To talk about the present day condition of the church, I suppose I ought to draw the distinction between the body of Christ, and the church congregations. The body of Christ is doing just fine. :) It is, however, getting harder and harder to find them in church congregations. The true believer is keen to little 'off tracks' around them and sometimes it gets alarming. Remember, you can read descriptions of today's churches in Revelations. Things really haven't changed that much. There is, however, a new stage before us. The one world church. Many of us see it happening right before our eyes.Read what Paul said about these things. It truly is, up to us to speak up. If they won't listen, we are to leave. It's that cut and dried. You see, Christians get things confused. They confuse spreading the gospel and letting their light shine, with begging and striving with un-believers. Check out those things Jesus told us to do. Striving isn't in the orders, at all.It has always been a hard...

The Fair Housing Act prohibits organizations receiving HUD funds from "engaging in inherently religious activities."In Greensboro, officials have interpreted that to mean that residents can't use common areas for Bible study or a voluntary religious service. The Church of Derek Webb
2009-08-17 11:17:00 Over the last few years, one consistent ‘pastoral’ voice in my life has been the music and  lyrics of Derek Webb. Derek used to play with Caedmon’s Call, a band I was introduced to and thoroughly enjoyed during my high school years. Several years back Webb started doing his own solo albums, all of which have been great, but the last three of which have spoken words of encouragement, conviction and compassion into my life. Most of his lyrics these days would be considered too political, too controversial, or too explicit for most churches, he doesn’t seem to be getting invited to many christian concerts or worship services either. But, if he had a church, I’d go to it. I’ve struggled a lot with faith over the last nine years, and amidst that struggle I’ve grown a lot in my awareness of the world, my understanding of the Bible and what Jesus said and did while he walked the earth. I find myself in this mysterious place, trying to reconcile my...

Is the church a safe place to repent?
2009-08-05 04:01:00 The Internet Monk wrote in an article called, Is there a Place to Repent?I Corinthians 6:9-116: 9 Don?t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don?t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people?none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. 11 Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. -Paul the Apostle, First Letter to the CorinthiansHe spoke of how we have heard this scripture stated many times, and how you have heard if you don?t repent of those sins you will not inherit your place in Heaven. What he does say that makes a lot of sense to me is that the church at isn?t to welcoming to those on that rocky road to repentance. Once yo...
D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones on Unity across Eschatological Positions
2009-07-20 16:44:00 We’ve been discussing whether eschatological positions should hinder our unity in a local church, or beyond. Mark Dever recently challenged pastors to not let this hinder unity, even calling doctrinal statements that detail a specific millennial position, sinful. In light of all this, I was struck when I read the following words from Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones ...
Unity and the End Times
2009-07-17 14:00:00 Should one’s end times’ views limit their unity with other Christian believers? Should adherence to premillennialism, for instance, be considered a hallmark of the faith, a non-negotiable test of one’s submission to Christ? Mark Dever ...

Another Woman Shot and Killed in the Church Parking Lot
2009-02-24 17:16:00 The Washington Post reports today that a 52-year-old Montgomery County woman was shot to death outside her church. It seems they had police there directly traffic at the church when they heard gunshots. The Police arrested the husband, and he is being held with no bond.People's Community Baptist Church in Silver Spring I'm sure is reeling after this murder within their walls. Accountability within the Church
2008-12-21 18:24:00 Rebecca Hancock has been in the news a lot lately, and its brought church discipline into the limelight. I know for myself I did struggle with this, and not because I don?t realize that Jesus wouldn?t condone having relations with your boyfriend out of wedlock. Scripture is clear about this subject. To me it was the way she described the events that bothered me.I?m NOT going to say that I?m 100% right here, but there are items in this story that do tend to bother me. I got the impression that she had been a member of this church for sometime, and during this time she was given a mentor. I think that?s awesome! She spoke of how she never realized how they deal with church discipline, and that portion was never made clear to her. I don?t know if she was new Christian, and she had never heard of such a concept. If they do indeed use this tool, and if you look at the size of their membership it can?t be uncommon to know about it. To me this would be discussed if in nothing else...
The church and Britain: a homily for Christ the King Sunday
2008-12-09 01:59:00 A guest-post by Andrew Brower Latz (Ben’s note: Sorry, I’m a couple of weeks behind with this – but I still wanted to post this excellent sermon, which Andrew Brower Latz, an F&T-reader, preached recently for Christ the King Sunday)Today is the feast of Christ the King, or the Reign of Christ, the last Sunday of the Christian year. It was established by the Roman Catholic Church in the 20th century in response to the rise of fascism. It proclaims, in the words of Paul, that Christ is ‘far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named.’ Powerful stuff, but what does it mean for us today, living in a 21st-century liberal democracy?Let me begin with two examples from the media, one recent and one not so recent. The first, on Thursday on Radio 3, was a discussion with Trevor Philips, director of the Commission for Racial Equality; someone towards the left of the political spectrum, who describes himself as progressive and libertarian. ...

Domestic Violence - Is the church Neutral?
2008-11-20 03:35:00 When Loving Him Hurts had a very spot on article about the neutral position churches seem to take when it comes to the very HAIRY position of meddling in domestic violence! lol yes I had to throw in some sarcasm there! How many people have heard comments similiar to this?We won?t sides: Even though he has been threatening, we won?t take sides as there is always two sides to every story. He must be in pain over the split and that is why he is mistreating you He needs as much protection from you as you do from him We won?t get involved because we want to maintain relationships with him We won?t confess he has mistreated you, we will just keep emphasising that he is hurting You must have done something to trigger his anger We won?t hold him accountable as we don?t want him to feel worse or upset him even further The part that floored me is he wasn't even her husband either! I guess I had been concentrating SO much on marriages that I never stopped to realize how completely NEUTRAL th...

However, one of the questions that lingers is, ?Why is so little attention given to this issue within the setting of the Church?? For me, in order to bring it successfully into the spotlight, I must first have a deep understanding of why it has not yet been in the spotlight. I offer three reasons and ask for others to offer more. I know many of you can help with that.1. The Church is Afraid to speak of Domestic Violence!
2008-08-14 14:26:00 I have to say at times I get so burned out speaking of this subject - emotional abuse, verbal abuse and domestic violence. It seems no one listens, and no one hears except for the victims themselves! The victims are WHOM I'm addressing most of the time. I want to make sure they feel heard, and I want them to feel they are NOT alone and shame is NOT something that everyone uses to HUSH them up! I feel at times people that see people like myself that speak about abuse as some joke, and we are not be taken seriously. I dare to speak of something that is taboo, and since I speak so much of it I must have a one track mind. Everything in my world must be seen as abusive. Its strange to me how they can't see that some people are able to view things, and realize the difference.People speak of the healing of faith, and how God can bring healing and peace. The difference between God and those that speak of it at times seems to be that when we do receive healing and peace we are still seen a...
Domestic Abuse within the Church - When Men Hurt Their Own
2008-08-13 14:56:00 I found an interesting set of articles on The Hope Blog. From the comments after a number of entries she made it sounds like she is placing together a book from the prospective of a women dealing with domestic violence. The ring of horror of their pastor's attitude is what people need to understand about this aspect. YES this is a woman's prospective about domestic violence within the church, and her life dealing with a controlling husband. I believe it happens to both genders, but the more information and stories that get out there the better I believe.Inherit the Wind: When Men Hurt Their Own Part OneInherit the Wind: When Men Hurt Their Own Part TwoInherit the Wind: WHen Men Hurt Their Own Part ThreeThe Final Installment the author states is coming SOON!The responses are very good to this series, and of course you have to have some bad ones as well.By the way, according to the account in Genesis, Abraham sent his wife to be in the harem of the Egyptian Pharaoh.Yet, Sarah...

IT IS TIME TO BEGIN SPEAKING: The Church and Domestic Violence
2008-06-25 10:21:00 Kimberly B. George of Faith and Gender wrote a paper about domestic violence. I have to say a major KUDOS to her and her voice and gift for writing this peice! The number of American soldiers killed in Iraq almost equals the number of women who have been killed on American soil by husbands and boyfriends over the same span of time. Since 2003, just over 4000 American soldiers have been killed in the war. Approximately 6000 women have been killed on the homeland (1).Like the soldiers killed in battle, these deaths have left children without parents, fathers without daughters, brothers without sisters. Children witnessing domestic violence are suffering posttraumatic stress disorders. Many of the boys who witness the violence of their fathers will themselves grow up to physically, emotionally, or verbally abuse their partners. I long for Christian communities to pay more attention. YIKES I didn't even realize that! MORE people have been killed by domestic violence than in the war so...
The Church of the Comfortable and Tolerant
2008-06-05 18:53:00 By Jesse MorrellOnce upon a time in the land called Feel Good there was a Church. This new Church was called "The Church of the Comfortable and Tolerant". Very recently this Church hired a new Pastor, Pastor Peace Keeper, who just graduated from the Seminary of Smooth Talking. The congregation "of the Comfortable and Tolerant" loved the new Pastor's sermons. Some of their favorites were "God is happy with everyone", "Everything is fine and dandy", and "There is nothing but good times ahead".Pastor Peace Keeper once made a terrible mistake. He wrongfully allowed Mr. Conscience into the pulpit. Mr. Conscience did nothing but call human mistakes "sins" and called the good folks of the congregation to "repent". Mr. Conscience had never been to the Seminary of Smooth Talking, and maybe he should have before attempting to preach. The congregation of the Comfortable and Tolerant were shocked at Mr. Consciences audacity and arrogance. They said things among themselves like "who does this se...
From the Church of Rome to the Family of God
2008-06-02 06:01:00 I was raised in the Roman Catholic church in an all catholic town in Northern Maine. My father was an alcoholic and my mother a devout catholic. I was also a devout catholic and was even taught catechism in the CCD program. I married my high school sweetheart in 1974 and moved to the Northern Virginia area. After six years of a failed marriage, knowing I could not get divorced (remember, this was the 70's and divorce was still frowned on by the catholic church), I decided that suicide was the only answer. I was "in love" with someone else who did not even know that I existed and life seemed too much to bear!My best friend from Maine came to visit Virginia during her vacation. She had become this "born again" Christian and I had warned her not to "preach to me." However, the Lord had quite different plans for me. During her visit, we discussed the "end times." I had a great interest in Nostradamus and the future. I was so afraid to go through the horrible times that these so-called p...

Domestic Violence and the Church
2008-05-30 18:29:00 Exeter CRC had an article called, "Domestic Violence and the Church"It spoke of her own personal journey dealing with this issue, and how the church failed her!Its VERY moving!Annette - one of the responses to this article states:But this has NO bearing on this discussion. Is having women in spiritual leadership over a body of believers biblical? That's what this discussion is about. Not on the horrors of domestic or child abuse, and the bad responses to it.I recognize that it is easy to link the two, but they are different, and seeing that difference is important.I say it DOES!LOL I of course responded!I'm personally confused by Annette's comments.'''But this has NO bearing on this discussion. Is having women in spiritual leadership over a body of believers biblical? That's what this discussion is about. Not on the horrors of domestic or child abuse, and the bad responses to it.'''If you are saying that men only have the spiritual leadership role what is being done about ...
He lied to get into the church
2008-05-19 12:56:00 Taibbi, a contributing editor for Rolling Stone, spent more than four months in 2006 and 2007 pretending to worship at the San Antonio megachurch whose pastor, John Hagee, has lately aired regrets if his past comments, including a reference to the "great whore" in the Book of Revelation, proved hurtful to Catholics.

Instead, it is about how our terminology and use of words has worked in such a way as to re-define our understanding of church. I mean "re-define" in the sense of defining church in a manner that is not consistent with the description of the church that we see in Scripture. What kinds of terms and words am I talking about? Well, there are many. And, I'll list a few later. But for now, when you read about the church, when you watch television programs that discuss the church, when you see churches arguing and fighting to the point of splitting, when you see Christians talking about important aspects of the church, what terms and phrases are used? What concepts concerning "church" are important to believers today as demonstrated by their conversations and writings?I would suggest that man...

GOP.com Joins the Church of Global Warming,
2008-05-14 04:13:00 The GOP website is now featuring a presentation on how John McCain?s cap and trade program will not only encourage businesses to go green, but will actually increase jobs in America. This latest insult, in a long line of insults from John McCain, is unforgivable.
The Future of the Church (Part 3 of 3)
2008-05-11 04:23:00 In Part 1 and Part 2 of this short series on the Future of the Church, I wrote about how the church needs to escape the attractional, church-growth model of the church, and become more missional. Doing so will enable us to prepare for the world-wide reawakening of the church that is coming. In this post, I ... |
