Generational Patricide
2009-09-17 15:40:00
In a recent forums discussion at Sharper Iron, I came across some insightful and I thought quite helpful comments on what I call “generational patricide”.  We were discussing Phil Johnson’s recent post explaining the demise of Neo-Evangelicalism.  He wrote off the entire movement with nearly the same fervor he showed when declaring that the independent ...
Wednesday news round up: the church of public housing?
2009-08-26 16:10:00
Photo by Sarah Jane RheeGreensboro North Carolina is all a-twitter over the local housing authority is applying rules on religion. The Fair Housing Act prohibits organizations receiving HUD funds from "engaging in inherently religious activities."In Greensboro, officials have interpreted that to mean that residents can't use common areas for Bible study or a voluntary religious service. What do you think? Is it a violation of residents' freedoms? Or is it ensuring government-owned property isn't used to spread religion?U.S. housing, confidence data points to recovery - WaPo says we're shaking off this recession and housing numbers prove it.Looking to divide the pie more fairly - Philadelphia public schools are considering a measure close to my heart: changing the way we fund...
The Church of Derek Webb
2009-08-17 11:17:00
Over the last few years, one consistent ‘pastoral’ voice in my life has been the music and  lyrics of Derek Webb. Derek used to play with Caedmon’s Call, a band I was introduced to and thoroughly enjoyed during my high school years. Several years back Webb started doing his own solo albums, all of which have been great, but the last three of which have spoken words of encouragement, conviction and compassion into my life. Most of his lyrics these days would be considered too political, too controversial, or too explicit for most churches, he doesn’t seem to be getting invited to many christian concerts or worship services either. But, if he had a church, I’d go to it. I’ve struggled a lot with faith over the last nine years, and amidst that struggle I’ve grown a lot in my awareness of the world, my understanding of the Bible and what Jesus said and did while he walked the earth. I find myself in this mysterious place, trying to reconcile my...
Is the church a safe place to repent?
2009-08-05 04:01:00
The Internet Monk wrote in an article called, Is there a Place to Repent?I Corinthians 6:9-116: 9 Don?t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don?t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people?none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. 11 Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. -Paul the Apostle, First Letter to the CorinthiansHe spoke of how we have heard this scripture stated many times, and how you have heard if you don?t repent of those sins you will not inherit your place in Heaven. What he does say that makes a lot of sense to me is that the church at isn?t to welcoming to those on that rocky road to repentance. Once yo...
The Church Of Lance Armstrong
2009-07-29 00:08:00
Over the past couple of years, I have been sort of a silent surveyor of the emotions people have for Lance Armstrong. You need not go to Austin, Texas for this privilege. Its right here on the internet. While Mr. Armstrong's Twitter account is bludgeoning with over 1.5 million followers, fierce wars are being waged in forums, blogs, news websites, sports commentaries, opinion columns and even video sites like Youtube and Metacafe. I wonder if the numbers of people and the sheer amount of time spent/wasted in these 'word battles' make any sense to a casual observer at all.To give you a small perspective, take Yahoo Sports for example. On stories such as this one in YS, the number of comments from people who were interested in trading and exchanging the war of words on the topic of who was right and who was wrong is easily over 1900. Yes, you read right. One thousand nine hundred comments. Now, if you go through such comments like you slowly flip the pages of a fat book, you can sort...
D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones on Unity across Eschatological Positions
2009-07-20 16:44:00
We’ve been discussing whether eschatological positions should hinder our unity in a local church, or beyond.  Mark Dever recently challenged pastors to not let this hinder unity, even calling doctrinal statements that detail a specific millennial position, sinful. In light of all this, I was struck when I read the following words from Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones ...
Unity and the End Times
2009-07-17 14:00:00
Should one’s end times’ views limit their unity with other Christian believers? Should churches and denominations spell out their particular end times’ theology, as a matter of their statement of faith? Should adherence to premillennialism, for instance, be considered a hallmark of the faith, a non-negotiable test of one’s submission to Christ? Mark Dever ...

Quotes to Note 7: The Church Spiritually Fulfills OT Penal Execution Laws
2009-02-28 16:43:00
I’ve been enjoying the book Him We Proclaim: Preaching Christ from All the Scriptures by Dennis Johnson (P&R), lately. I hope to finish the book and have a review up by next week. This morning I came across a section that I’ll share in a quote below. I had never thought of the connection ...
Another Woman Shot and Killed in the Church Parking Lot
2009-02-24 17:16:00
The Washington Post reports today that a 52-year-old Montgomery County woman was shot to death outside her church. It seems they had police there directly traffic at the church when they heard gunshots. The Police arrested the husband, and he is being held with no bond.People's Community Baptist Church in Silver Spring I'm sure is reeling after this murder within their walls. If you look at the comments (from the newspaper links) you do get some crazy ones as you would expect, but one was from a person that knew the victim. This poster knew Patricia Ann Simmons Kelly of Rockville, and I think she said it well!I knew Pat. She was a lovely woman and a beautiful spirit. What happened to Pat had nothing to do with church, but rather a personal, marital situation that had apparently gone very wrong. Please keep Pat and her family in your prayers, and in particular, her daughter -- a young girl who has lost her mother far too soon.Police said the husband had recently been asked to lea...

Accountability within the Church
2008-12-21 18:24:00
Rebecca Hancock has been in the news a lot lately, and its brought church discipline into the limelight. I know for myself I did struggle with this, and not because I don?t realize that Jesus wouldn?t condone having relations with your boyfriend out of wedlock. Scripture is clear about this subject. To me it was the way she described the events that bothered me.I?m NOT going to say that I?m 100% right here, but there are items in this story that do tend to bother me. I got the impression that she had been a member of this church for sometime, and during this time she was given a mentor. I think that?s awesome! She spoke of how she never realized how they deal with church discipline, and that portion was never made clear to her. I don?t know if she was new Christian, and she had never heard of such a concept. If they do indeed use this tool, and if you look at the size of their membership it can?t be uncommon to know about it. To me this would be discussed if in nothing else...
The church and Britain: a homily for Christ the King Sunday
2008-12-09 01:59:00
A guest-post by Andrew Brower Latz (Ben’s note: Sorry, I’m a couple of weeks behind with this – but I still wanted to post this excellent sermon, which Andrew Brower Latz, an F&T-reader, preached recently for Christ the King Sunday)Today is the feast of Christ the King, or the Reign of Christ, the last Sunday of the Christian year. It was established by the Roman Catholic Church in the 20th century in response to the rise of fascism. It proclaims, in the words of Paul, that Christ is ‘far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named.’ Powerful stuff, but what does it mean for us today, living in a 21st-century liberal democracy?Let me begin with two examples from the media, one recent and one not so recent. The first, on Thursday on Radio 3, was a discussion with Trevor Philips, director of the Commission for Racial Equality; someone towards the left of the political spectrum, who describes himself as progressive and libertarian. ...
Giving Marriage Back to the Church
2008-11-24 13:09:00
-By Frank Salvato Across the country the issue of ?gay marriage? is being debated, examined, voted on and legislated. Groups, both pro and con, have taken to the streets from Massachusetts and Connecticut to both ends of California to express their support and opposition to legislating finality to this issue. While the answer to this ideological ...
Domestic Violence - Is the church Neutral?
2008-11-20 03:35:00
When Loving Him Hurts had a very spot on article about the neutral position churches seem to take when it comes to the very HAIRY position of meddling in domestic violence! lol yes I had to throw in some sarcasm there! How many people have heard comments similiar to this?We won?t sides: Even though he has been threatening, we won?t take sides as there is always two sides to every story. He must be in pain over the split and that is why he is mistreating you He needs as much protection from you as you do from him We won?t get involved because we want to maintain relationships with him We won?t confess he has mistreated you, we will just keep emphasising that he is hurting You must have done something to trigger his anger We won?t hold him accountable as we don?t want him to feel worse or upset him even further The part that floored me is he wasn't even her husband either! I guess I had been concentrating SO much on marriages that I never stopped to realize how completely NEUTRAL th...
Violence within the Church
2008-10-18 18:51:00
SBC Impact has an article called, 'Violence in the Church - An Introduction'. They are looking for feedback, and I encourage my readers to hand them that! Domestic violence it seems to me is almost a foreign languange to others, and fear of NOT helping change things seems to be the trigger of NOT doing anything at all! Here is a snippet:Why it is untouched- I am thankful for the few churches and pastors giving serious attention to this problem. However, one of the questions that lingers is, ?Why is so little attention given to this issue within the setting of the Church?? For me, in order to bring it successfully into the spotlight, I must first have a deep understanding of why it has not yet been in the spotlight. I offer three reasons and ask for others to offer more. I know many of you can help with that.1. The theology and practice of marriage and divorce silently pushes us away from the issue of domestic violence. Slippery, but real, questions present themselves in this a...

The Devil?s Delight: Deceiving the Church
2008-08-22 04:32:00
From Christian Worldview Network: The world and church have let Oprah Winfrey shape the culture with her me-centered gospel. A Divine Perspective on the Church ? C.J. Mahaney
2008-08-15 16:37:00
Last Sunday, we had the privilege of hearing C.J. Mahaney preach in our church. His text was 1 Cor. 1:1-9 where Paul surprisingly commends the Corinthian church. He’s about to provide some strong correction for their many errors, but he goes out of his way to thank God for them, and ensure they ...
The Church is Afraid to speak of Domestic Violence!
2008-08-14 14:26:00
I have to say at times I get so burned out speaking of this subject - emotional abuse, verbal abuse and domestic violence. It seems no one listens, and no one hears except for the victims themselves! The victims are WHOM I'm addressing most of the time. I want to make sure they feel heard, and I want them to feel they are NOT alone and shame is NOT something that everyone uses to HUSH them up! I feel at times people that see people like myself that speak about abuse as some joke, and we are not be taken seriously. I dare to speak of something that is taboo, and since I speak so much of it I must have a one track mind. Everything in my world must be seen as abusive. Its strange to me how they can't see that some people are able to view things, and realize the difference.People speak of the healing of faith, and how God can bring healing and peace. The difference between God and those that speak of it at times seems to be that when we do receive healing and peace we are still seen a...
Domestic Abuse within the Church - When Men Hurt Their Own
2008-08-13 14:56:00
I found an interesting set of articles on The Hope Blog. From the comments after a number of entries she made it sounds like she is placing together a book from the prospective of a women dealing with domestic violence. The ring of horror of their pastor's attitude is what people need to understand about this aspect. YES this is a woman's prospective about domestic violence within the church, and her life dealing with a controlling husband. I believe it happens to both genders, but the more information and stories that get out there the better I believe.Inherit the Wind: When Men Hurt Their Own Part OneInherit the Wind: When Men Hurt Their Own Part TwoInherit the Wind: WHen Men Hurt Their Own Part ThreeThe Final Installment the author states is coming SOON!The responses are very good to this series, and of course you have to have some bad ones as well.By the way, according to the account in Genesis, Abraham sent his wife to be in the harem of the Egyptian Pharaoh.Yet, Sarah...
America ? A Pagan Nation?
2008-08-01 19:07:00
In the conclusion to my series on understanding the land promise made to Israel, I made the claim that America is just another secular, pagan nation. I’m not too surprised that someone objected to my claim. The idea that America is a Christian nation is a very common idea, but it is still misguided. Yes, ...
IT IS TIME TO BEGIN SPEAKING: The Church and Domestic Violence
2008-06-25 10:21:00
Kimberly B. George of Faith and Gender wrote a paper about domestic violence. I have to say a major KUDOS to her and her voice and gift for writing this peice! The number of American soldiers killed in Iraq almost equals the number of women who have been killed on American soil by husbands and boyfriends over the same span of time. Since 2003, just over 4000 American soldiers have been killed in the war. Approximately 6000 women have been killed on the homeland (1).Like the soldiers killed in battle, these deaths have left children without parents, fathers without daughters, brothers without sisters. Children witnessing domestic violence are suffering posttraumatic stress disorders. Many of the boys who witness the violence of their fathers will themselves grow up to physically, emotionally, or verbally abuse their partners. I long for Christian communities to pay more attention. YIKES I didn't even realize that! MORE people have been killed by domestic violence than in the war so...
The Church of the Comfortable and Tolerant
2008-06-05 18:53:00
By Jesse MorrellOnce upon a time in the land called Feel Good there was a Church. This new Church was called "The Church of the Comfortable and Tolerant". Very recently this Church hired a new Pastor, Pastor Peace Keeper, who just graduated from the Seminary of Smooth Talking. The congregation "of the Comfortable and Tolerant" loved the new Pastor's sermons. Some of their favorites were "God is happy with everyone", "Everything is fine and dandy", and "There is nothing but good times ahead".Pastor Peace Keeper once made a terrible mistake. He wrongfully allowed Mr. Conscience into the pulpit. Mr. Conscience did nothing but call human mistakes "sins" and called the good folks of the congregation to "repent". Mr. Conscience had never been to the Seminary of Smooth Talking, and maybe he should have before attempting to preach. The congregation of the Comfortable and Tolerant were shocked at Mr. Consciences audacity and arrogance. They said things among themselves like "who does this se...
From the Church of Rome to the Family of God
2008-06-02 06:01:00
I was raised in the Roman Catholic church in an all catholic town in Northern Maine. My father was an alcoholic and my mother a devout catholic. I was also a devout catholic and was even taught catechism in the CCD program. I married my high school sweetheart in 1974 and moved to the Northern Virginia area. After six years of a failed marriage, knowing I could not get divorced (remember, this was the 70's and divorce was still frowned on by the catholic church), I decided that suicide was the only answer. I was "in love" with someone else who did not even know that I existed and life seemed too much to bear!My best friend from Maine came to visit Virginia during her vacation. She had become this "born again" Christian and I had warned her not to "preach to me." However, the Lord had quite different plans for me. During her visit, we discussed the "end times." I had a great interest in Nostradamus and the future. I was so afraid to go through the horrible times that these so-called p...
Domestic Violence and the Church
2008-05-30 18:29:00
Exeter CRC had an article called, "Domestic Violence and the Church"It spoke of her own personal journey dealing with this issue, and how the church failed her!Its VERY moving!Annette - one of the responses to this article states:But this has NO bearing on this discussion. Is having women in spiritual leadership over a body of believers biblical? That's what this discussion is about. Not on the horrors of domestic or child abuse, and the bad responses to it.I recognize that it is easy to link the two, but they are different, and seeing that difference is important.I say it DOES!LOL I of course responded!I'm personally confused by Annette's comments.'''But this has NO bearing on this discussion. Redefining the Church
2008-05-17 22:17:00
Alan is one of my favorite bloggers, and "Redefining the Chruch" is a concise, yet poignant entry on his blog (bold added by me):"This is not an article about the scriptural definition of the church. Instead, it is about how our terminology and use of words has worked in such a way as to re-define our understanding of church. I mean "re-define" in the sense of defining church in a manner that is not consistent with the description of the church that we see in Scripture. What kinds of terms and words am I talking about? Well, there are many. And, I'll list a few later. But for now, when you read about the church, when you watch television programs that discuss the church, when you see churches arguing and fighting to the point of splitting, when you see Christians talking about important aspects of the church, what terms and phrases are used? What concepts concerning "church" are important to believers today as demonstrated by their conversations and writings?I would suggest that man...

The Future of the Church (Part 3 of 3)
2008-05-11 04:23:00
In Part 1 and Part 2 of this short series on the Future of the Church, I wrote about how the church needs to escape the attractional, church-growth model of the church, and become more missional. Doing so will enable us to prepare for the world-wide reawakening of the church that is coming. In this post, I ...
The death of the Church of England
2008-05-10 18:41:00
Great news, sort of: Church attendance in Britain is declining so fast that the number of regular churchgoers will be fewer than those attending mosques within a generation, research published today suggests. The fall - from the four million people who attend church at least once a month today - means that the Church of England, Catholicism and other denominations will become financially unviable. ... According to Religious Trends, a comprehensive statistical analysis of religious practice in Britain, published by Christian Research, even Hindus will come close to outnumbering churchgoers within a generation. The forecast to 2050 shows churchgoing in Britain declining to 899,000 while the active Hindu population, now at nearly 400,000, will have more than doubled to 855,000. By 2050 there will be 2,660,000 active Muslims in Britain - nearly three times the number of Sunday churchgoers. The important thing now is to stop Islam (and other growing religions, including some of the ver...

Stained Glass at the now suppressed St.Aloysius Church, Philadelphia, Pa. April 28, 2008 - There is no such thing as ?desanctification? within the Catholic Church. The women of FLDS: teary-eyed defenders of the church of child rape
2008-04-21 08:04:00
In 2005, the state of Texas passed one of the quickest bills in decades, changing the age at which young people with parental consent could legally marry from 14 to 16. Why the hurry? Warren Jeffs and the FLDS had come to town. Here?s a quick, easy definition of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints: ?The FLDS practice polygamy in arranged marriages, sometimes between underage girls and older men.? This is the accepted tagline used with almost no variation by AP, Reuters, the Post, the Times, Fox News… palatable. Neutral. Not too upsetting to hear during breakfast. Not nearly as hard to think about as the truth, which is simple enough for even the Texas Legislature to grasp: An underage girl is a child. A child cannot consent to a marriage, arranged or otherwise, or to the sexual consummation of that illegal marriage, nor can her parents consent for her. Non-consensual sex is rape. Jeffs, his father before him and two generations of their fellow predators had created...
