Obama, the Closer
2008-05-27 19:19:00
Whether itâ??s Billy Ayers or Bernadine Dohrn, Tom Hayden or Jane Fonda, or any of the other lesser-knowns, 60s Marxist radicals are lining up behind Obama. Obamaâ??s young worshippers think they see something altogether new, a unique persona, seemingly magically transported to this moment in history to help them finally be the ones to net ...

The Closer Report: Setup for Failure
2008-05-12 01:08:00
By Paul ShapiroSince when do closers remove themselves from the closer role? Isn?t that manager?s job? Well, this happened not once, but twice this week. Both Jason Isringhausen and Eric Gagne asked for a ?mental break? from their respective team?s closer role.On Friday, Isringhausen racked up his Major League-leading fifth blown save, a distinction that he shares with Gagne and one that they would both rather not have. After this performance, Isringhausen suggested a meeting that included himself, manager Tony La Russa, pitching coach Dave Duncan and general manager John Mozeliak. During that meeting, Izzy removed himself from the Cardinals? closer role. "It needed to be done," he told reporters. "It's a mental break more than anything. ? I'm just getting sick of embarrassing myself and letting my team down. ? They can't keep sending me out there when I'm pitching the way I'm pitching.Isringhausen, who actually leads the National League with 11 saves, compared the way he has b...
The Closer Continuum: Slovenly Eric Gagne, Calling Myself Out
2008-05-06 04:15:00
First of all, I need to call myself out: last week, during a discussion of Gary Sheffield as a buy-low candidate, I claimed that “Jim Leyland will continue to insert him in the three-hole until he can?t play.” One week later, the Detroit Tigers lineup for tonight reads as follows: 1. Curtis Granderson, OF 2. Placido Polanco, ...
The Closer Report- GO WITH GAGNE
2008-05-05 13:06:00
By: Paul Shapiro Eric Gagne is still leading the league is blown saves with four, but the positive is that the number hasn’t gone up over the past seven days. In fact, Gagne went 2-for-2 in save opportunities over the past week, putting him at 9-for-13 this year. His ERA went down over the past week (6.75 to 6.14), but his WHIP went up (1.50 to 1.70) so those of you who own him should understand what you are in for in the long run. Gagne just isn’t the same guy that was once lights out in LA with the Dodgers. He will get you strikeouts -- 17 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings. He will also keep on the edge of your seat, allowing 26 base runners (15 hits and 10 walks) in less than 15 innings of work. But owners should rest assured that the Canadian, who holds the record for most saves in a single season (55), is entrenched as the Brewers closer. According to Adam McCalvy, Brewers Beat Reporter for MLB.com, the ninth inning belongs to Gagne. “The Brewers have been happy with Gagne...
The Closer Report- Relyin? on Ryan
2008-04-28 09:21:00
By: Paul Shapiro For those of you who ran to the waiver wires in the past 24 hours to pick up Blue Jays reliever Jesse Carlson, I have some news for you -- B.J. Ryan is still entrenched in Toronto ?s closer role. Carlson, who picked up the first save of his career against the Royals on Sunday, was called upon with a three-run lead in the ninth inning and pitched a scoreless frame in a 5-2 win. The left-hander has been superb since the Blue Jays purchased his contract from Triple-A Syracuse on April 9 with a 1.42 ERA in 12 2/3 innings, along with 15 strikeouts. I wouldn?t expect Carlson to be in line for many more save opportunities. This simply adds another name to the pot, along with Jeremy Accardo and Scott Downs, to potentially pick up a save on days that Ryan is unable to pitch. When Ryan came in with a one-run lead to face the Royals 8, 9 and 1 hitters, it was simply Blue Jays manager John Gibbons making sure his closer got into the game. ?The Ryan Rules? currently say th...

I love my girlfriend and we have a trusting relationship (Pandora’s box opened). One week down, twenty-four to go. Deep breath. I know, I know. C.C. Sabathia is driving you mad. Alfonso Soriano has you in a fix. Even experienced fantasy baseball players can’t help but be jerked around by the relative ups and downs of the first week of the baseball season - myself included. We’ve been waiting ...
The Closer Continuum: Wood Named Cubs Closer

Kerry Wood is the new closer for the Chicago Cubs, per MLB.com: MESA, Ariz. — Kid K is now the Cubs’ closer. Cubs manager Lou Piniella on Monday named Kerry Wood as the closer, edging Bob Howry and Carlos Marmol for the job. Ryan Dempster and Jason Marquis also were tabbed for the two open spots ...
The Closer Continuum: Gearing Up for 2008
2008-03-10 18:32:00
A season begins anew. Freshly cut grass. Pine tar, polished ash, and the crack of the bat. Baseball is back. Just as Major League teams assess strengths and weaknesses for the upcoming season, so does a fantasy baseball manager gauge her or his prospects for a championship. Keeper league managers declare players and decide if they will rebuild ...
Bullet Points: Yahoo is back, Lyon is the closer, and Pujols is Hillary Cli
2008-02-09 01:13:00
Just some news, notes and links to take you into the weekend. — I just noticed that Yahoo’s fantasy baseball service is once again open for registration, which I’ll sheepishly tell you is the equivalent of pitchers and catchers reporting for our geeky kind. Better yet, they’ve padded their already sweet service with some new features, including expanded categories (finally) and daily 5-star matchup rankings (e.g. if Johan Santana is starting against the Nationals, we can bet it’ll be a 5—if he’s starting against Peavy, it’ll be around a 3. That’s a real time-saver). I’ve always been fond of the service, and it looked especially nice when ESPN’s servers crashed early last season. Hopefully they get a new draft screen, because that thing is straight out of 1996. Also: hopefully they don’t get bought out by ESPN, because that would suck. As if we didn’t have enough Matthew Berry in our lives. — Doug Melvin ...

The Closer Continuum: Looking at Next Year
2007-09-07 19:40:00
With baseball season nearing its end, the managers in contention have been separated from the managers lending an extra eye to fantasy football (or considering playing fantasy football for the first time). Count me as one of the latter. It was a fun season, to be sure, but a frustrating one. Two of my four keepers were Jason Bay and Travis Hafner; Bay is getting the boot for next year, Hafner will stay on for one more go around. I picked Jermaine Dye instead of Alex Rios, took Roy Oswalt as my #1 SP, suffered through Aramis Ramirez’s knee injury, and watched Justin Morneau crumble in the stretch and Alfonso Soriano go down with hammy woes. Which is why you want to keep a close eye on all of the above for next year, as many of these players will be undervalued - Bay especially. Granted, Bay’s career is certainly on a downswing, but the simple rule of three year averages has his projection around .280-28-100-95-8, which is worthy of a fifth or sixth round pick. I could see...

Who's the closer
2007-08-26 03:25:00
Today the Mets entered the ninth inning with a one run lead, but instead of seeing Closer Billy Wagner take the mound it was Aaron Heilman attempting to save the game. Was Wagner injured or demoted, what could be the reason for Heilman attempting his first save since 2005. As it turns out Wagner was not available by his own accord. He has struggled in three consecutive outings with high pitch counts and needed the rest.Heilman is in because Wagner said he’s going through a dead arm period and needs the day to rest. But, I was thinking more Rolaids.-JD source John Delcos

ATTN: Cameron Maybin has gotten the call from the Detroit Tigers, with Craig Monroe being sent to AAA (Word has it that the Tigers will send Monroe and Omar Infante to the Pirates for Jack Wilson). Those in keeper leagues take notice - talent expert Gary Sheffield has compared Maybin to Eric Davis, with 30 HR, 70 SB upside. I don’t know if I trust Sheff, but Maybin is an elite prospect, a la Justin Upton. There has been a high level of discourse on the site recently, what with Derek’s fine work attacking the difficult and important question of player valuation. If you haven’t read Derek’s article, please see below. Derek, well done to incorporate the Seamless brand name into your research findings. Soon, the plebeians of fanalytics will be helpless to resist. The notion of VORP translates very well to fantasy, and is the reason so many fantasy baseball pundits pledge not to “pay” for saves. With the volatility of closing roles and the relative cat...

The Closer Continuum: A Glance at Numbers After the Break
2007-08-11 04:04:00
Happy Friday, kids. I just had a peanut butter and marmalade sandwich, and I’m feeling pretty good. Wanted to take a look at a couple of closers’ post All-Star Break numbers, and the first player that comes to mind is Francisco Cordero. Most of fantasy nation has likely clued in to CoCo’s collapse by now, but just as a refresher: Pre All-Star Break: 2.86 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, .196 BAA. Post All-Star Break: 4.50 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, .261 BAA. The Post All-Star Break numbers also miss Cordero’s atrocious June, where he served the baseball up to the tune of a 7.50 ERA, 1.83 WHIP, and .333 BAA. I can pat my own back on this one, as I pegged Cordero for a regression to career means in May. What sublime genius. Mariano Rivera: Pre All-Star Break: 3.79 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, .263 BAA Post All-Star Break: 0.00 ERA, 0.58 WHIP, .167 BAA Since the All-Star Break, Rivera has 17 K in 12 IP with 0 BB, and has fully returned to elite closer status. Bobby Jenks: Pre All-Star Break: 3.28 ERA...

THE CLOSER gets a fourth season

THE CLOSER has been renewed for a fourth season which will air during Summer 2008. Even though I don’t follow the show religiously, it pulls me in when I do watch it. The Closer Continuum: Goldfish, Pi, Joe Nathan, and BABIP
2007-06-22 22:35:00
All is well in New Haven, although much thought went into searching for another slickly-punned headline. Needless to say, the creativity fish were not biting. (On a side note, my girlfriend procured a fish at Wal-Mart [of all places] a couple of weeks ago, and she thinks it likes her. I keep trying to tell her that fish, however cute, are glorified plants. To my dismay, Dr. Culum Brown of the University of Edinburgh has apparently shown that the crimson spotted rainbow fish can recall the placement of a trawling net in its tank from 11 months in the past. Get a real job, Culum.) And, in another insanely unrelated and un-parenthesized side note, Hiroyuki Goto, of Keio University in Tokyo, correctly recited ? to 42,194 places in February of 1995.* My God. Do not let that man into your fantasy baseball league. Joe Nathan is no longer the top closer in my rankings, a change which regretfully mirrors Eric Karabell?s ?Relief Efforts? of this week. During the usual Friday morning perusal o...
Amrie’s Take on TV: THE CLOSER
2007-06-18 14:38:00
One of the greatest things about this column and this website is the incredible chances we get to talk to the brilliant minds that make our favorite shows more terrific than we think possible. Case in point, I recently had the opportunity to spend some time on the phone with the very charming creator, executive producer, and writer of the TNT original series, The Closer, Mr. James Duff. James was well spoken, smart, friendly, and he truly cares about every single aspect of his baby, his show. James talked about what’s in store for the season, starting with the season premiere. “I think we reintroduce all of the characters in an up front and unusual way,” James said. “Crime scenes are being video taped now and this is going on across the country. You get a video-graph of the crime scenes. This is a great way to start watching the show.” James went on to add, “You get stand-ups with every single member of the squad, while you’re being introduced to one of our most ...
The Closer Continuum: Out of Saito
2007-06-17 00:38:00
I’ve been in somewhat of a foul mood, and feel like disclosing, Matthew Berry style: I am only in one (1) league this year (some expert, huh?), and am losing quite badly to my very best friends. It is the same league whose draft I detailed back in March, as competitive as it is shallow (eight teams). Granted, I am still in fourth place, but the leaders are twenty (20) points ahead. I bring this up for two reasons: one, we all want to win, but sometimes, no matter how much tinkering, trading, and analysis, it just isn’t in the cards. I am trying to be gracious with myself, but it isn’t easy. So, for all of you who aren’t winning, I feel you - but let’s not forget that we have almost 100 games of baseball left to play. On that note, in a keeper league, there is a time to look carefully at the standings, at your player projections, and see if you have more than a 25% chance of finishing in the money (or bragging rights). Not a facile calculation, certainly...

A lovely week of relaxation in Vermont. I am hungry for lunch, so I give you the closer list as is: Tier 1 1. [1] Joe Nathan, MIN: (Pat Neshek) 2. [2] Francisco Rodriguez, LAA: (Scot Shields) 3. [3] Billy Wagner, NYM: (Aaron Heilman) Tier 2 4. [4] Jonathan Papelbon, BOS: (Hideki Okajima) 5. [5] J.J. Putz, SEA: (Chris Reitsma) 6. [6] Mariano Rivera, NYY: (Kyle Farnsworth) 7. [7] Francisco Cordero, MIL: (Derrick Turnbow) 8. [9] Trevor Hoffman, SD: (Scott Linebrink) 9. [8] Takashi Saito, LAD: (Jonathan Broxton) An update from last week: Rivera went 1.74/0.77 with a 10/1 K/BB ratio in 10.1 IP in May. He’s back, and the saves will come. Saito drops a spot with concerns over his shoulder. J.J. Putz is a beast. Tier 3 10. [10] Brian Fuentes, COL: (Manuel Corpas) 11. [11] Jason Isringhausen, STL: (Brad Thompson) 12. [14] Bobby Jenks, CHW: (David Aardsma) 13. [12] Al Reyes, TB: (Sean Camp) 14. [16] Chris Ray, BAL: (Danys Baez) Chris Ray returns to Tier 3. Again, a good buy low opportun...
The Closer Continuum: Myered in Doubt

Bright and sunny skies here in the Northeast. The semester is finally over and Memorial Day Weekend is at hand. Once I cast this little morsel out into cyberspace, I’ll be throwing my dirty laundry in the car and heading up to idyllic Middlebury, VT, for a fabulous party weekend. Hooray. In other news, Derek is approaching his return from the Emerald Isle. I want to thank everyone who has contributed to Seamless over the last week and a half, pumping life into the site. Huge props and great articles. Thanks. For the closers: I should note that when I rank, say, Alan Embree twelfth overall, I do not think Alan Embree is the twelfth best closer (as devilish as his goatees have been in the past). The prospect of Huston Street’s return has him be twelfth. I suppose that what I am really doing, then, is ranking each team’s closer situation, not only the actual closer at this very moment. “Twelfth” is a funny word. Twelfth, twelfth, twelfth. Tier 1 1. [1] Joe...

A dreary day here in urbane New Haven. Is it raining in Ireland, Derek? While Mr. Nelson is submerging himself in vats of Irish Stout, we wrestle with the amorphous blob of closer situations: Tier 1 1. [1] Joe Nathan, MIN: (Pat Neshek) 2. [2] Francisco Rodriguez, LAA: (Scot Shields) 3. [4] Billy Wagner, NYM: (Aaron Heilman) Wagner and Papelbon flipflop, as concerns about Pap’s shoulder linger and Wagner has been unhittable in May. Tier 2 4. [3] Jonathan Papelbon, BOS: (Hideki Okajima) 5. [8] J.J. Putz, SEA: (Chris Reitsma) 6. [5] Mariano Rivera, NYY: (Kyle Farnsworth) 7. [7] Francisco Cordero, MIL: (Derrick Turnbow) 8. [10] Takashi Saito, LAD: (Jonathan Broxton) Putz has rounded back into form. Rivera hasn’t had a save opportunity since May 3rd. It’s worth noting, however, that since his April 27th blowup, Rivera has a 1.27 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. Francisco Cordero hasn’t let up, but, as it has been mentioned elsewhere, his value is never going to get higher. Cons...

The Closer Continuum: Ryan Out for the Season
2007-05-11 22:17:00
UPDATE: Henry Owens has hit the DL. Get Jorge Julio! It’s hot in the apartment. Books are open all around the computer, some with Chinese characters, some not. All mostly unread. This morning, I thought I was going to get some work done. I opened up Yahoo! to take a “quick” look at my team’s performance from the night before, and there was a trade offer, one of the very first I’d gotten all year: Alfonso Soriano Chris Duncan for Vladimir Guerrero Matt Kemp There went my morning. I did the deal, and I’m glad, but what do you all think? Let me know in the comments. It’s an 8-team no-limit keeper league, and 64 players will be kept for next season. A big development in fantasy today: B.J. Ryan is out for the season with Tommy John surgery. I think a lot of us saw this coming, although I was still thick-skulled enough to drop Frasor. You can’t drop a guy that has any significant chance of closing. Now, my money is on Accardo, but we have t...
The Closer Continuum: Accardo in, Frasor out?
2007-05-04 12:11:00
Man, has the weather been beautiful recently. More time indoors today, though, as there continues to be work to be done. Brett Myers has taken over the closer role in Philly, as you likely already know, and he notched his first save last night. Grab him, obviously, if he is available in your league, as he could keep the role all year. As I mention below, however, I’m not quite as sold as most that Gordon doesn’t come back and regain the role. It isn’t official yet, but Jason Frasor may have lost the closer role in Toronto. Go get Jeremy Accardo now. See below. Closers: Tier 1 1. [1] Joe Nathan, MIN: (Pat Neshek) 2. [2] Francisco Rodriguez, LAA: (Scot Shields) 3. [3] Jonathan Papelbon, BOS: (Hideki Okajima) Papelbon blew his first save, but the kid is money. A little disconcerting that the Sawx didn’t send him out last night, but he did throw 32 pitches on Tuesday. Tier 2 4. [4] Mariano Rivera, NYY: (Kyle Farnsworth) 5. [5] Billy Wagner, NYM: (Aaron Heilman) N...

Just having returned from a week in Jamaica thinking to escape one of my greatest passions about life insurance, diabetes, the more a I got whacked up side the head with the fact that it seems to epidemic everywhere. Turns out Jamaica has a real problem with juvenile type 2 diabetes. Kind of interesting since the normal contributing factors present in type 2 diabetes really aren’t readily apparent in the Jamaican culture. Turns out the childhood obesity is the culprit, not unlike the US. Just not something one would expect. Bottom line. Anyone, Jamaican or otherwise, who slips into bad eating and exercise habits can put themselves at risk for diabetes. As with coronary artery disease, the additional stress on the body can cause collateral health issues. Then we’re back to talking about how to do all the right things, not just to take care of yourself, but also to find affordable life insurance. Remember, all the information you can possibly get is not too much when you v...

OK: the semester is really closing in now. Really. Fortunately for me, I forged an astral link to Wily Mo Pena yesterday evening when I called his grand slam shot. Not even 17th century English satire can stop me now. We are about 15% of the way through the baseball season. Deep breath. Have you been tracking your performance? Have you noticed if you’ve been gaining or losing ground? Look at the trends. Don’t give up on slumping stars (Sheffield), but do look at your team as a whole. Recheck your projections. Take a look at the big picture. If you drafted Ian Kinsler, congrats. This is one of those times where all of the pundits were right on. Everyone had him on their sleeper list. And look at him go. Don’t trade this guy unless you get an amazing offer. And don’t look now, but Aaron Rowand is having a very good April. Closers: Tier 1 1. [1] Joe Nathan, MIN: (Pat Neshek) 2. Matt Capps - Salamon Torres averaged .25 runs a game through 2006 or about a run every 4 games (He had similar stats in 2005). All of his numbers point to a 2005 Jose Mesa type closer. This basically means, be ready for a nail bitting, roller coaster of a time. Obviously Matt Capps is the better choice, however, Pittsburgh as shown a loyalty to players with major league experience under their belt. That being said, don't expect a quick transition over to Matt Capps this year, either we're going to see Salamon go out in a blaze of runs or we wait till next year for ol Capps. Octavio Dotel - The question everyone keeps asking is will this guy regain his closer status once he returns to the Royals. The plain and simple answer to that question is 100% yes. They brought him in with a plan and there is no way they're going to move away from this unless absolutely necessary. Look for Dotel to be back on the mound closing in mid May. Brad Lidge - Wheeler may not be the remedy,...
