Leonard O Goenaga Professor Boronat POT3054 February 18, 2008 LockeanLiberalism and the Declaration of Independence Scholars and historians have continued to probeinto the political theories behind our Declaration of Independence in an effort to locate the source of itsinspiration. Although they have often held Lockean Liberalism as a centraltenant of the Declaration’sideology, such scholars as Gary Wills and Stephen Lucas have attacked hisinfluence, arguing instead for the important role of Scottish philosophers andthe Dutch. Although the sway of Scottish moralist and the Dutch Oath ofAbjuration may have influenced Thomas Jefferson, the central role of Locke’s SecondTreatise cannot be undermined. This paperwill analyze and argue the important role Lockean Liberalism had in thedevelopment of the Declarationand its ideology by analyzing the Declaration’s second paragraph along Lockean concepts ofliberty, freedom, instituting government, and the right to alter that government....

My official written response to the discussion question..."We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately."...Benjamin Franklin, at the signing of the Declaration of IndependenceThe Declaration was the official resolution put forth by the new American nation declaring that the people would stand for the King's tyranny no more. As stated so eloquently by Thomas Jefferson, the purpose of the resolution was "in order to place before mankind the common sense of the matter in terms so plain and simple as to command their assent."The main reasons for putting forth the declaration were simple--the American colonies were declaring to the world their grievances against King George and their intent to separate and become a free nation. The war for independence was on, the American army was outclassed and outnumbered by the British and at times support waned, even among the weary troops, who though malnourished, tired, and weary, persevered and kept going. The Declaratio...

Signers of the Declaration of Independence
2007-07-05 05:26:00
They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. So what kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners and the others held respectable positions; they were men of means and very well educated. However, they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.Five signers were captured by the British as traitors. They were tortured before they died.------------------------------------Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.------------------------------------Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured.------------------------------------Nine fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.------------------------------------Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild-eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-sp...
