the economist on san francisco business etiquette
2008-05-19 06:35:00
It's great to see The Economist try its hand at giving advice for  businessmen traveling to San Francisco. It reads a little like a field manual for a new potentially hostile territory. Here's what they say about meeting etiquette."Meetings and greetings• It is important to both start and end appointments on time. If you’re driving between San Francisco and Silicon Valley, add 20% to your travel time and always take highway 280 over highway 101 if you can—it is usually faster and always prettier. When possible, schedule your meetings between 10am and 3pm to avoid rush hours.• Don’t be offended if people neglect to shake your hand or take your business card in large business meetings. Americans (and Californians) are more informal than you may be used to. • Having said that, carry as many business cards as possible, after making room for all the newest high-tech gadgets.• Be generous with your contacts. People here will remember and rew...

The Economist Examines Egypt's Emerging Religious Freedom
2008-02-15 23:33:00
The Economist, a weekly leading British newspaper with extensive worldwide readership has published yesterday an article about the recent developments affecting the pressing issue of religious freedom in Egypt. It focused on the recent court rulings regarding the Baha'is of Egypt as well as Egyptian citizens who had converted from Islam to Christianity. Both religious minorities have been facing enormous barriers to their civil rights prior to these recent court verdicts that allowed them to be recognized as citizens, even though in the case of the Baha'is the ruling fell short of recognizing the legitimacy of their religion in Egypt. In view of the recent opinion of Cairo's Court of Administrative Justice, it should be clearly pointed out that the Baha'i religion is recognized globally as an independent divinely-ordained religion. Additionally, the Baha'i International Community (BIC) is permanently represented in the United Nations along with other prominent non-governmental o...

Ads of The Economist.
2008-01-18 11:19:00
Ads of The Economist. The ads from The Economist always make a point & impact on the viewers. Here are some of those ads that aren't different either!'What's the worst thing to lose as we get older? Our hair? Our teeth? Our curiosity? The Economist.' 'The world revolves around the sun. Not the British Isles. The Economist.'I've been having a recurring argument lately about the morality of "attribution" and how bad it is to make money off of someone else's creation. But take this (terrific) Economist ad (the ads in London are about 1000x more clever than their American counterparts, and about 10x more clever than their Canadian cousins). It is clearly making money off of Scrabble, so should it give them a cut? How about attribution? "The Scrabble tile and Scrabble are Registered Trademarks of Hasbro, Inc."? The whole point of the ad is that there's no text EXCEPT the text on the tiles; it would, IMO, substantially weaken this piece to add an attribution line. Should they have...
The Economist: "Sooner or later the world's hottest market will burn up"
2008-01-12 15:51:00
I read this very enlightening and interesting article in The Economist which strengths my resolve to avoid the Chinese stock market for the short run. I believe the Chinese market is a great long term opportunity but it seems to lack maturity required for competitive capital markets. The Economist lists the following as reasons for the foreboding title:1. The Shanghai stock exchange is virtual and differs greatly from the western concept of stock markets where demand and supply are free.2. Stocks do not actually grant full ownership rights.3. Chinese stock prices are believed to move in just one direction: Up. This belief is a result of a series of IPO?s of government companies which were priced in a fashion that would lead to high demands and huge price surges.4. Lack of alternatives for Chinese savers.5. Lack of the ability to ?Short? on stocks.6. Lack of transparency. The complete article can be found here.More on the Chinese stock market:1. NYSE urges China for more listing flexib...

Across the pond The Economist predicts a Hillary presidency. "Both Mr Obama and Mr Edwards come across as too lightweight (America tried lightweight in 2000 and came to regret it). Al Gore, should he change his mind and enter the race, is a proven loser (except when it comes to Nobel prizes and Oscars). "I subscribed to The Economist mag thirty years ago when it was known as The London Economist and published on newsprint. The weekly American news review is a must-read. Begrudingly, this is, too. Chick mag Glamour's first presidential guest blog. Guess who? And why? "Advocate for women and children for 35 years" Hillary. "Young women today aren?t bound by questions of what they can or cannot do as women; they want to know how they can do it better. We?ve shattered so many barriers, but we?re not stopping here... Come Inauguration Day, we?re going to shatter one more, but these young women are interested in pushing beyond the barriers."

OPW: The Economist on Sputnik?s Legacy

The Economist Magazine launches a nuclear attack on Phoenix Arizona: "Phoen
2007-08-22 13:38:00
Wow.In the end, HP'ers, what happened to Phoenix these past six years is truly sad. They had a great canvas to work with, and it could have become a great American city. But the REIC, a corrupted REIC-led government, and its clueless undereducated population simply f*cked it up. I absolutely loved Phoenix in the mid-90s, but it's no longer that town. It changed for the worse - much much worse. Phoenix, thanks to the housing bubble, quickly became a crime-ridden, fake-economy, uneducated, soulless, cheap, plastic, poser-filled, realtor-infested, illegal-immigration-run-amok hellhole. A perfect example of what happens when the REIC gets hold of a major metropolitan area and uses it for their short-term gain. And a perfect example of horrific urban planning, or lack thereof. Phoenix may very well become the new Detroit of the Southwest. A town based on a single industry (real estate - 40% of the Phoenix economy) while run by a corrupted government, that slipped into the abyss when th...
What do the economists say?
2007-08-22 03:02:00
The vast majority of Economists are liberals and even more support the Democratic Party. As a matter of fact the viewpoints of most economists form a good outline of contemporary liberalism. A study by Carnegie University and research by the Southern Economics Journal found the following:71% of Economists beleive that income inquality in the U.S. is too high. 81% of Economists advocate a role for government in redistributing income. 63% of Economists idenitify as liberal A study by Stockholm and Santa Clara University found the following beleives among economists:Most economists favorSafety regulationsGun controlRedistributionPublic schoolingAnti-discrimination lawsThe Democratic Party (2.5:1 ratio)Most economists oppose:Tighter immigration controlsGovernment ownership of enterpriseTariffsSeems like liberalism/progressivism is the ideology of choice for American economists. While I'm not all surprised, it proves that we're onto something!
The Economist: Republicans in Big, Big Trouble
2007-08-09 21:28:00
(From the diaries — kos) After a long six and a half years of watching almost helplessly as the Republican Party loots, rapes and pillages everything from the Constitution to the middle class to non-threatening countries overseas, it’s always satisfying to see rats call a spade a spade and jump off the pirate ship known as the modern GOP. But rarely has the sense of schadenfreude been more poignant to me than when reading the latest Economist article today about the woes of the Republican Party and American conservative movement in general. The article, titled The American Right Under the Weather, is but one piece in the new overall issue covering the leftward shift of American politics in recent months. As anyone who has read the magazine knows, the editorial staff of The Economist is certainly no friend to Democrats, favoring a decidedly corporatist agenda valuing “free trade over “fair trade” and a foreign policy usually at odds with progressive valu...

Two housing related magazine covers from June 2005 - Time and The Economist
2007-08-02 00:47:00
I actually feel bad for the editors at TIME Magazine. One, to have gotten the story so so wrong back in 2005. And two, to not cover the biggest story in the country at all over the past two years. It must be tough to be so incompetent at your job. It must be embarrassing to be so disrespected by your peers and potential readers.Home Sweet Home - TIME Magazine June 2005Ah, the blistering real estate market, where dreams of big bucks come wrapped in aluminum siding, and you can get a three-bedroom ranch house with your hair extensions and a mortgage with your Grilled Stuft Burrito. The stock market may be dragging, but home prices are soaring, fueling a national obsession with real estate. Your house is now your piggy bank, ATM and 401(k). House gawking is a hobby; remodeling, both entertainment and an investment. Folks brag about having bought their home in the '90s the way they used to brag about having bought Microsoft in the '80s.
