The Environment: “Offsetting” that cheap flight
2008-05-15 18:52:00 It’s undeniable that an increase in flying is contributing to the degradation of the environment. In Europe, news reports about the effects of low-cost airlines on the environment are a regular occurrence. We’d be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge that low-cost flights in Europe are undeniably contributing to global warming. But what can you do about it, aside from taking the train or bus? Carbon Offsetting: One Option Carbon offsetting involves calculating the amount of carbon dioxide pumped into the environment by pollution-heavy activities (like flying on airplanes) and then purchasing a corresponding credit to be used on projects that counteract, or offset, the damage. Carbon offsetting is not a perfect solution to the problem of global warming, but it does limit the damage done by budget-savvy air travelers. Airlines are getting into the spirit of things as well. EasyJet, for example, has incorporated a carbon emissions offsetting option into its booking page....

Hanjin: Plundering the Environment
2008-05-12 16:01:00 PerryScope: by Perry DiazRecently, a series of anomalies concerning Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction, a South Korean company, have dominated the headlines of Manila newspapers. Considering that billions of dollars were involved in these transactions, "transparency" has once again come to the forefront of debate. Like the Chinese contracts -- NBN-ZTE, Cyber Ed, Fuhua, etc. -- which the Arroyo government negotiated secretly, it would seem that the same modus operandi may have been used in negotiating the Hanjin contracts. The first Hanjin shipyard was built in the Subic Bay Freeport in 2006 at a cost of $1.7 billion. A few weeks ago, it launched the first ship -- a $60 million container ship for a Greek shipping company. With 10,000 Filipinos employed, it's a boon to the sagging Philippine economy. The second Hanjin shipyard is to be located in the Phividec Industrial Authority in the province of Misamis Oriental in Mindanao. The shipyard -- which is projected to be completed...

Hybrid Vehicles - Good For Your Wallet, The Environment & The American Econ
2008-04-29 15:21:00 You may be surprised to find out that the United States consumes a quarter of the world's oil supply but only carries three percent of the world's oil reserves on its own territory. As a result, America is forced to import over 60% of the oil our country needs, relying more and more on foreign countries, particularly in the Middle East, to support our oil dependency. Many experts are under the impression that the introduction and popularity of hybrid vehicles in the US will lessen our dependency on overseas oil. Powered jointly by gasoline and electric engines, hybrids use much less gasoline than conventional vehicles and therefore use less oil. Over 11 million barrels of oil are imported into the US each day and although most of it is contributed to industry, the running of vehicles still uses quite a bit of oil and hybrids provide a way to limit that amount.Because the market reacted so well towards the introduction of hybrid vehicles, it is predicted that more Americans will buy...

Save The Environment!
2008-04-24 21:23:00 In honor of Earth Day this week, I am alerting all my environmentally-savvy readers (you better be recycling bitches!) about a very cool online service.Everyone talks about telemarketers and how you can opt to be added to no-call lists and the like, but no one seems to have created a no-mail list yet and that's even sadder. I mean, granted, telemarketers are annoying. However, if you have caller ID (which most people do), you don't answer calls from numbers you don't recognize anyway. But JUNK MAIL is horrendous because not only does it annoy you, but it's also bad for the environment. To think of all that wasted paper is sickening. Credit card offers are one thing (complete out of control ridiculousness if you ask me), but even worse are the countless catalogs we all receive. If you are receiving catalogs from retailers that you frequent (in other words, you actually WANT the catalogs and USE the catalogs), then it's fine. But I for one was at one point receiving close ...

2008-04-17 09:17:00 The Environment# Author:Carolyn Saari# Publisher: Columbia University Press # Number Of Pages: 208 # Publication Date: 2002-10-15 # ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0231121970 # ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780231121972 Challenging Freud's assumption that an individual first develops intrapsychically and is only later confronted with the demands of external reality, Carolyn Saari posits that human beings initially construct a picture of their immediate environment and then construct their identities within that environment. The Environment is an argument in three parts. Part 1 discusses psychoanalytic and developmental theory, showing that while such theory has assumed the existence of an environment, it has taken for granted and therefore left unexamined its role in human development. Michel Foucault's theory of social control provides the framework for Part 2, which examines psychotherapy's capacity either to liberate or to repress the client. Part 3 relates the practical benefits and broader implications o...

Destroying art to save the environment
2008-03-29 22:29:00 "I can't conceive of anything being more varied and rich and handsome than the planet Earth. And its crowning beauty is the natural world. I want to soak it up, up understand it as well as I can, and to absorb it.... and then I'd like to put it together and express it in my painting. This is the way I want to dedicate my life." The above quote comes from Robert Bateman, and wonderfully summarizes the work of one of Canada's foremost painters and naturalists. During a decades-long career painting beautiful, and often awe-inspiring, depictions of Canada?s wildlife and landscapes he has never pretended to be a detached observer of nature. A self-defined naturalist and conservationist, he has worked with the World Wildlife Fund and been honoured by the Canadian Wildlife Federation and the National Audubon Society. But if you were to ask an average Canadian to name five environmental crusaders, you?d be hard pressed to get Bateman?s name, since he has rarely been seen as a face or he...

Help Save The Environment and Save Yourself Money
2008-03-22 15:17:00 I recently saw a documentary of glacier erosion in Bolivia which in a few years will rob the country of much of its supply of fresh water. This came after seeing another documentary a few weeks earlier talking about receding snow and ice in Antarctica and glacier erosion in the northern hemisphere. However complicated the theories of global warming may be and however hard it is to make an absolute determination about the truth of these theories, it certainly does appear that some of the key predictions of this theory are being realized. So what can we do? Firstly we must accept as fact that some damage has already been done due to the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that we have already pumped into the atmosphere and sometime down the road the results of this problem will have to be addressed. Given that we can't take back what we have already done then how can we reduce our CO2 emissions going into the future? My thought on this is that one of the biggest (and certainly lowest cost) ...

Use Blackle. Save Energy. Help the Environment.
2008-03-07 01:49:00 Posted this article so that more people will be aware of how we can save energy through our browser and while we are surfing the net. Here is one way of it through Blackle. Thanks to Mattic a friend from AEYNSD for this.Blackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search. Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been ske...

Even if the distinction between cellulosic or algae biofuels and biofuel made from things like corn are not totally understood by everyone, a bad rap is settling in. The fake news reporters over at The Onion have found three people to give their opinion on what it all means. One's off to the right, the others are available in yesterday's American Voices section.
