Venice Surf Report 05/29/08 This Is What We Now Own
2008-05-29 17:07:00
Wow - looks really, really good. Peaky, waist to chest high swell that is breaking up and down the beach and absolutely perfect conditions to go with it. Brilliant sunshine, light offshores, sheet glass surface; it's about as good as Venice gets at this size.4-5 out on either side, street parking still available but hey - if you gotta pay the $3 to get in the pay lot believe me, it will be worth it.What are you waiting for? Go already!OK, so as you may know, the Fed has been accepting non-liquid securities that no rational person would touch as collateral for loans consisting of U.S. Treasuries. The resason why is that banks need to use leverage to make money; if they pledge $100 worth of securities with someone they can use that to borrow $1000, for a 10 to 1 leverage ratio. And that is what has kept the economy going for a long time. But that has all changed in the last year as banks and dealers are requiring higher levels of collateral, or, to put it another way, you might be abl...

There are many different opinions regarding the Federal Reserve. A recent article in The Gold Prices Newsletter has suggested that the Fed has ...

The argument about whether bloggers never do real reporting is not very interesting to us, but suffice it to say there are numerous instances where they do the same thing as journalists, even in the tiny public health blogosphere. A case in point is my colleague. Dr. David Michaels at The Pump Handle (TPH), who has been dogging the story of flavoring workers lung (aka popcorn workers lung) from the outset, and has even broken a few stories. Today’s post at TPH may be the most significant entry yet. But first, some background. The Fed and Puritanical Ethics
2007-08-27 15:19:00
A week ago, the Wall Street Journal explained a Puritanical financial concept underlying the Fed's hesitancy to drop interest rates - no bailing out players who bend the rules: Wall Street has a dream: that the Federal Reserve will rescue financial markets with a sharp cut in interest rates. Behind that dream lurks a problem, something financial people call moral hazard. Moral hazard is an old economic concept with its roots in the insurance business. The idea goes like this: If you protect someone too well against an unwanted outcome, that person may behave recklessly. Someone who buys extensive liability insurance for his car may drive too fast because he feels financially protected. Is Countrywide's Leader Trying to Persuade the Feds?
2007-08-23 19:32:00
In an exclusive interview on CNBC today, Countrywide's CEO Angelo Mozilo mentioned a few things that may have been intended to help persuade the Federal Reserve to cut rates.Mozilo mentioned that he thought the US economy was headed into recession and that more liquidity was needed to stabilize the markets.  Two things that clearly are aimed at the decision the Federal Reserve needs to make about further cuts in the Discount Rate and even a cut in the Federal Funds Rate at their meeting next month. So, let's analyze why he made these comments and is he afraid that Countrywide is still in danger even with the B of A investment of $2B.  The comment he made about the economy going into recession may not be that far from a reality down the road, but why did he mention it?  More than likely, he wants the Feds to cut rates no later than their next meeting, preferably earlier, and help further bailout Countrywide.  The reason is that that Fed's goals are to r...

Did the Feds Already Bailout Countrywide?
2007-08-22 06:48:00
Interestingly enough, the Federal Reserve Board cut the Discount Rate last Friday in an effort to increase liquidity in the crumbling financial markets.  This rate has no effect on mortgages, but it allows banks, including lending institutions, access to "borrowed" money.  Additionally, the Feds extended the borrowing period of these funds to thirty days. While that helped the markets overall, the most interesting part is the potential hidden reasoning behind that move.  As I have said before, I highly doubt the Feds would let Countrywide go under, though a bankruptcy trip would not be out the question.  The reasoning is that the mass panic and media frenzy that would ensue would destroy the markets, no matter how healthy they may be still. So, did the Fed cut the Discount rate to bailout Countrywide?  While they would never come right out and say that, it may be a more likely scenario than you think.  Richard Bove, a well respected analyst...

What's the Fed's Next Move?
2007-08-20 04:34:00
The Federal Reserve may have thrown Wall Street a bone Friday by lowering the rate it charges banks, but if this week's housing market data and corporate headlines portend more gloom, it may have to toss another. So far, Wall Street, beset by fears that credit problems in mortgage and corporate lending will cripple the economy, has been stubbornly signaling to the central bank that it wants a bailout -- ideally, by way of a cut in the benchmark fed funds rate. With the Fed's next meeting not scheduled until Sept. 18, investors may stay jittery over the coming weeks as they watch the central bank to see if it will lower rates before that point.Stocks got a boost Friday, thanks to the cut in Fed's discount rate, but few market participants are breathing a sigh of relief yet. Many on Wall Street are still in panic mode; even when the Fed started injecting large amounts of cash into the banking system through repurchase agreements two weeks ago, the Dow Jones industrial average continu...

Why the Fed?s rate cut did not come as a surprise

Since hitting a peak on July 16, the meltdown in global stock markets has taken place with lightning speed. Given the fact that more than 10% has already been wiped off investors? scoreboards, the question invariably is how low can we go. States try to fix immigration problems that the federal government refuses
