Has the format war truly ended?
2008-03-25 14:31:00 There's an interesting story over at the Korea Times about manufacturers being hesitant, even though the format war is over, to adopt Blu-ray as a viable format. With the HD-DVD format falling out of the high-definition disc format battle, Blu-ray is widely expected to eventually replace the DVD platform. However, it seems very unlikely that South Korea will see the quick adoption of the advanced storage devices as the nation’s two top manufacturers ? Samsung Electronics and LG electronics ? don’t have immediate plans to accelerate their Blu-ray businesses. Samsung Electronics said Monday that it doesn’t have immediate plans to massively inject fresh capital into its five-year Blu-ray business. ``Since 2005, we have been releasing Blu-ray products but we are not considering sharpening the business for the time being despite its success in the format war,’’ a Samsung spokesperson said, adding that his company is still performing extensive market researches for further strategies....

HD-DVD concedes Defeat in the Format War with Blu-ray
2008-02-19 14:51:00 It's now official, Blu-ray is now the standard next generation video format after Toshiba threw in the towel on their HD-DVD format this morning after being rumored to do so for weeks. I am happy that finally there war is over and the entertainment industry can now settle on one standard format, but it's still sad that cheaper more accessible technology lost out. blu-ray disc Sony can now expect a tonne load of cash from every buying licensing to produce Blu-ray products and maybe I can finally justify buying a Playstation 3 which comes with a blu-ray drive. I am most interested to see how this unfolds in the gaming industry with Sony rival and HD-DVD supporter Microsoft now stuck with a dead format. Toshiba concedes defeat in DVD format war

Sony still thinks that it can win the format war
2007-11-23 21:31:00 With the battle between Blu-Ray and HD DVD seeming like it is in a stalemate, the Hollywood Reporter has an interesting article where it talks about Sony's CEO Howard Stringer, and how he has gone on record by stating that he thinks that "Ultimately, if you're passionate about movies, which these DVD collectors are, Blu-ray is the best answer." For me, I'm still waiting patiently for the chance to run out and buy a PS3, not for the games, but for the Blu-Ray player, which is the arguement I'm using to try to convince my wife to let me have one! Also of interest in the article: "I think Blu-ray is just a better format," Stringer said. "Our partners are with Blu-ray Disc because, first of all, we have greater security, which Fox is particularly good at. Disney thinks it's a better picture. And the sheer amount of bandwidth on the disc gives directors and beyond all kinds of future opportunity, including director's cuts and who knows what 3-D capabilities will be down the ro...

Flash Video: Has it Won the Format War
2007-09-20 02:18:00 Flash tried for a long time to become the next paradigm in web User Interface design. Over the years there has been loud supporters of Flash technologies in support of this effort. But there has been a larger resistance. It has failed up to now largely because Flash adds only marginal benefit over HTML and it brakes standard navigation from within a browser. For any added snazziness that Flash provided you got little else along with it. The net was negative. It has always had a place as a online game platform or as an online rich "creative" [read advertisement] platform. But not as a replacement UI. But it did accomplish something. It got a high penetration rate: 97% plus. This has been a crucial factor in its adoption as the now defacto web-video standard. None of the other players whether they be quicktime or windows media player have that adoption rate. Flash allows near ubiquity in one format. This presents the only way currently for unifying a customer experie...

THE FORMAT - "Dog Problems"

The Formation Adventure of the Atom
2007-02-15 02:16:00 The universe, whose vast dimension pushes the limits of the human's comprehension, functions without fail, resting on sensitive balances and within a great order and has done so since the first moment of its formation. How this enormous universe has come into being, where it leads to and how the laws that maintain the order and balance within it work, have always been matters of interest to people in all ages, and still are. Scientists made countless researches into these subjects and produced various arguments and theories. For scientists who measured the order and design in the universe by using their reason and conscience, it has not been difficult at all to explain this perfection. This is because Allah, the Almighty, Who rules over the entire universe, created this perfect design and this is obvious and clear to all people who can think and reason. Allah proclaims this evident truth in the verses of the Qur'an:In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation ...
