TIME Magazine Calls Jay Leno the Future of Television (Moment of Silence Pl
2009-09-04 19:13:00
Dear James Poniewozik, I hope you’re happy. And by that I mean, was it really necessary to ruin my holiday weekend by reminding me — on the cover of the the new issue of TIME Magazine no less — that Jay Leno is the future of television. I mean we’re talking about NBC here. Of course Jay Leno is the future of television. This is after-all the perennial fourth place network that is so desperate for a win, they took it upon themselves to crown Conan O’Brien the new king of late night two weeks into his tenure. The network that we’re fairly confident will import any show from any country in an effort to find the next OFFICE. Heck, over a decade later, NBC President Jeff Zucker, Kevin Reilly, Ben Silverman, Andrea Bromstad is still searching for the next FRIENDS. That, and you said it yourself, “NBC has set the bar low enough for a sleeping man to clear. If Leno can just get the ratings he did in late night, some 5 million viewers (paltry by 10 p.m. sta...

SCRUBS’ Neil Flynn Talks the Future of the Janitor
2009-08-26 21:15:00
After eight years of successfully avoiding any actual janitorial duties, SCRUBS’ ubiquitous Janitor is packing up his cleaning supplies. But thankfully for fans of his portrayer, actor Neil Flynn, he isn’t moving far. In fact, this fall (Wednesday September 30 at 8:30PM to be exact) Flynn is trading in his mop for a minivan, joining fictional TV wife Patricia Heaton on the new half-hour laugher THE MIDDLE, where he’ll play the thankless father to three kids. (Or as Flynn describes his TV brood, “heads of state compared to [SCRUBS co-stars] Zach Braff and Donald Faison!”) Same night (Wednesday), same network (ABC), just far less work. “With SCRUBS there were so many different setups, sometimes 40 or 60 different shots,” explained Flynn when asked to compare the difference between the two shows. “Cut away to this, cutaway to that, shooting SCRUBS took a lot of time!” Not that you’ll hear Flynn complaining. “My particul...

Treatment plans for the future
2009-08-04 17:26:00
Wednesday I have a pulmonary follow up visit at the UCSF chest clinic. What makes this appointment different, other than the fact that I will be breaking in a new Pulmonary fellow, is that we will be discussing some future treatments options, including bronchial Thermoplasty and Endobronchial Valve therapy (EBV) . At the present time, both of these procedures are still considered investigational, but both are in the process of seeking FDA approval . The latter (EBV), has never been done on an asthmatic, but because I have severe air -trapping, similar to that seen in emphysemic patients, it might be an option. I’ll go into more details about these specific treatments options in a future post. I’m also requesting a referral to be seen at the University of Pittsburgh Asthma Institute in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania . World renowned Pulmonologist and severe asthma researcher, Sally Wenzel who’s part of the SARP team, has agreed to take me on as a patient. Dr Wenzel ta...

Why Browser Is The Future Of Computing?
2009-07-20 08:12:00
Apple made the news recently by hitting 1.5 billion downloads at it’s app store. Quick to catch on, Google at the recent MobileBeat 2009 Conference said that App stores weren’t really the future. Sour grapes? Not quite. Google has long since focused on the importance of the web. From promoting Android to its latest venture, Chrome OS, Google seems to quite believe in what it preaches. Let’s look at the way things have changed when it comes to working on the Internet, from actually being content-receivers to users being content-generators, the way people work on the Internet is changing. More so, with changing technology, from Wireless to 3G, access to the internet is no longer restricted to a phone line. No wonder that people estimate almost all of the Internet will soon be access via mobile. We recently wrote about Cloud Computing. Not needing a huge hard-drive, or inbuilt software seems to go with the concept of Mobile Internet. Mobiles don’t really have t...

“In The Future MCommerce Transaction Limit To Be Decided By Individua
2009-07-16 08:40:00
This past week we met Mr. Ajay Adiseshann, Founder Of Paymate - A mobile payments solutions company at Startup Saturday in Mumbai. We had an interesting conversion with him on the recent RBI guidelines for credit card payments and its impact on ecommerce and mobile commerce. Here are snippets of our discussion and Insights from the same: In Future Banks To Decide MCommerce Limit Themselves Ajay was of the opinion that in the near future RBI will leave it to their respective banks to set a limit on mcommerce. He stated that based on his interactions with the RBI this is already being thought over and should be implemented sooner rather than later. The premise for this would be the fact that banks are in the best position to decide the amount of risk they can take. Credit Card Regulation Not To Have A Major Impact Ajay also stated that the recent RBI regulation on credit card verification which is reported to have a major impact on Mcommerce as the extra pin would only be required a...

The Future
2009-06-26 05:40:00
Noted baseball writer Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune has a column out comparing the futures of the Cubs and the White Sox and as usual he makes some solid points. But there is one area where I disagree with him, that is his notation (paraphrasing) that 'Sox fans aren't complaining that ownership cut payroll as dramatically as they did in the off-season.'With all due respect, Phil isn't going to the right places. I've read a number of upset fan posts at the various White Sox web sites over this past "non" off season and the caliber of players the Sox actually thought they could win something with.Consider this...if Kenny Williams had just brought back talent comparable to the players that...

Internet Micro-Payments Are Not the Future of Paid Online Content
2009-06-24 14:35:00
Barry Diller has made billions of dollars on the Internet. So when he said that Internet content would be "paid" content within five years I agreed. But then I disagreed.First off, I have to state that I'm damn impressed by the amount of money that Mr. Diller generates each and every minute on the Internet (his firm, IAC, uses around 30 sites to generate over $1.5Billion a year). With that type of street cred, it's hard to argue with him. And yet, I can't help but disagree with his recent statements in a BusinessWeek interview that "everything of any value" on the Internet would be fee-based within 5 years. No, he isn't wrong about his core statement - I agree that "most" valuable content will be fee-based. But I think he goes astray with his timeline (5 years) and payment structure (micro-payments).Follow me with this (I'm taking a leap of faith here):1. I do not believe that there is that much "valuable" content on the Internet today (as a % of total content). Sure, there i...
Collecta - New Entrant In Real Time Search, Will It Be The Future Of Search
2009-06-22 07:58:00
The quest to deliver real time searches has bewildered many search competitors to shore up their resources. Collecta happens to be an early mover towards that phenomena and is said to be the first effective real time search engine. How real is real-time search? There is a spate of term coined for search engines like Understanding Engine, Decision engine, semantic engine and real time search engine.Real time bug has completely bitten the web giants like Microsoft, Google and even Facebook. Real time search implies serving results for search queries as and when the information becomes available on the world wide web. Real time search engine are although coined as fast searches but takes a heavy toll on resources and also increases time taken to initiate and complete the query. This is useful for publishers and researchers but may not mean so much for general users as Google’s indexing priority through page rank importance already serves them well. Google in a way to satisfy real tim...

Citrus Fueled Sports Car Could Freshen Up The Future of Automotive Design

While many people are focused on redesigning our tried and true internal combustion engine, others are more interested in improving the fuel source we use in them. Most of these people are content trying to alter our current sources of fuel, but a few like to step off the beaten path. There are no better examples of this than the designers of the Stauro Concept.

2009-06-18 21:22:00
Send And Receive Real Gifts on teh cell phone Just when you think that life can't get any easier, it goes and DOES. Take sending someone money. In the olden days (2002), people who wanted to give someone else money had to do it the HARD way: Get cash, put it in a card, and then seal up the card and take it to the person. OR you had to write out a check and mail it.And gift certificates? Forget it: They were a pain in the butt: drive to the store, find the customer service desk in that weird, neglected corner of the department store, wait for some old lady to fill out the piece of paper, then hand her $50 and hope that she wasn't ripping you off. Then came "gift cards." You could -- can -- buy them anywhere, they're electronic, they can be used online, and the stores would even put them in envelopes FOR YOU. I thought that's as far as we could go, giving-money-wise, but I was wrong, because it just got EVEN EASIER, with the advent of a service that lets you Send And Receiv...
The future of SEO has BO
2009-06-17 12:20:00
It seems that many consumers don't understand what a web browser is... or know the difference between a browser and a search engine. Take a look at this video compiled by a Google research intern who asked people on the streets of New York. I believe that this is not atypical of the majority of consumer internet users.  The search engine is the internet to many people and the reason why Google has become so powerful - and the reason why Search Engine Optimisation (or perhaps Browser Optimisation - BO) is an essential part ofeverybody's marketing strategy today.   Search is ubiquitous. This is also the reason upstarts like TweetDeck are trying to become the defacto interface (call it a browser, call it a search engine) for the real-time web including Twitter.  They announced today the release of their version for the iPhone and it is already making a splash.  They want to replicate Google's success in the new frontier - the mobile, re...

Is eCommerce the Future of Buying?
2009-06-14 15:24:00
As time goes on, more and more of us become more open to buying online. Even people who were very resistant to it are now jumping in and giving it a go.But will there ever come a day when eCommerce becomes the main way that we all make our purchases?Despite the fact that internet shopping has become more popular as time has gone by, it's a long jump from that to it becoming the main way to shop. Some would argue that the future of buying is here already, since so many of us do use the internet for buying whatever it is we need. But even though internet marketing is attracting our attention like never before, is it really in a position to take the top spot against more traditional shopping? When it comes down to it there are certain things that we would simply go out and buy, rather than getting them online. The one factor which does become a problem in many cases is postage. Depending on the item we don't always like to pay postage when we buy online. But having said that there are ...

The redundant story: math and the future of journalism
2009-06-01 17:27:00
I have long argued the rather unoriginal position that journalism’s mission to inform has its roots in religious ‘infotainment’ both popular and intellectual - moralising editorials replaced moralising sermons, etc. But I’ve been struggling to express why that mission seems such a recurrent trope in history. The use of stories for entertaining and moral purposes is clear ...
Fueling The Future With Alternative Energy
2009-06-01 04:36:00
The current dominant conventional fuels that are used include fossil fuels, petroleum, uranium, coal and propane. There has been growing concern about these conventional fuels, thus leading to the increasing demand for, and interest in alternative fuels. The Pros of Alternative Fuels Alternative fuels such as bio-diesel, bio-alcohol, fuel cells, hydrogen, non-fossil methane, non-fossil natural gas and vegetable oil are now well known and deemed to be greatly more desirable in the quest to to fuel our vehicles. There are a number of benefits to using alternative fuels. Firstl, alternative fuel-powered vehicles will emit less harmful gasses into the air resulting in less pollution. Biodiesel is also completely renewable as its primary source is vegetable oil. So there is no need to throw out used oil as it can be collected and refined. Secondl, these fuels can also prolong the engine life of your vehicle and are generally cheaper than conventional fuels. Thirdl, they burn more effici...

Our (Slightly Less Than Serious) Take on the Future of JON & KATE PLUS
2009-05-26 20:26:00
Full disclosure: This TV Addict has never watched (or plans to watch) an entire episode of JON & KATE PLUS 8. Seriously, it’s realty shows like this one that give television a bad name. But since this reality TV train-wreck has become just that — an accident one can’t help but stop and stare at — this TV Addict, against my better judgement took a few moments this morning to read EW’s recap on last night’s fifth season premiere and watch the opening seven minutes of the show America cannot stop talking about. (See: Video) What I saw were two visibly exhausted and very angry parents with Jon proclaiming that he, “did not sign up for public scrutiny” and Kate admitting that appearing on the cover of the tabloids ”kill her,” wondering if anyone ever thinks about the ”human on the cover’.’ Well Kate, we’ve got news for you. We do in fact think about the human on the cover. We just don’t like what we see...
