The Future

The future of Qatar?
2008-09-23 13:00:00
The New York times carried a fascinating article about the contradictory culture of Dubai two days ago. (You can read the article here, but you will have to sign up first (for free)).The article explores the nature of Dubai, an Islamic city where you can drink alcohol and party till night. Western freedom lives side by side by mosques open 24 hours a day. Unlike many other Islamic countries, it is a place where people can choose to enjoy the vices of the West or to follow their religion to the full without the repression that exists elsewhere.Qatar is often compared to Dubai and there are many similarities. Both are exploding with growth, although Qatar is lucky enough to fund its growth with oil revenue rather than with debt. Both are also experiencing a dramatic change in culture. There is also conflict. There are both conservative and liberal elements in the country: those who want to continue to modernise and extend freedoms to those who want it, and those who want Qatar and Qa...

The Future of Food
2008-08-19 08:40:00
So I just finished watching "The Future of Food," a documentary film covering the biotechnology industry. This is the industry that brought us genetically modified (GM) food, the patenting of seeds (and therefore, the patenting of life itself - last time I checked, that was God's creation, not some corporation's), and terminator seeds. Terminator seeds produce one crop and then self-destruct. This prohibits the farmer from saving seeds for a second generation, forcing him to buy an entire new batch from the seed manufacturer. Just that people would think up, much less create something so perverse as a "terminator seed" is morally appalling. Especially in the wider context of the problem of hunger. Sick! Anyway, the film explores the ramifications that farmers in the US, Canada, and Mexico have faced, the economic trade issues that have resulted (the US lost billions in crop trade with EU and other markets who reject GM food since it is deemed unsafe by their standards), and the ra...

Book Review - The Future of Management
2008-08-11 20:10:00
In this significant new work, Gary Hamel challenges our thinking about management.  He argues that the management methods used in most organisations are relics of systems designed over 100 years ago to control and command.  They are inappropriate, inadequate and obstructive for knowledge-based 21st century organisations that want to be agile and innovative.  He gives detailed ...
The Future of GM, Ford, and Chrysler: Nothing?s Certain

As my MBA students know from personal experience, I spend too much class time discussing GM, based on my own work experience there in the 1980s, as well as my ongoing research on that company and the U.S. automotive industry.  It saddens and angers me that so many opportunities were not pursued, or not exploited ...

Microsoft: What does the future hold?
2008-06-30 21:29:00
I suspect that at some point in the future, today may well be seen to be very significant! Why? Simply because today was the first day that Microsoft moved forward without its founder at the helm. (Bill Gates retired from Microsoft as an executive last Friday, although he still remains its non-executive chairman). Changes in strategic leader nearly always are accompanied by big changes in direction, not necessarily immediately, but often relatively soon afterwards. This is even more evident when the strategic leader has been the organisation’s founder. Microsoft is clearly very keen to play down any hint of a change and I doubt there are any plans to be different at this stage, but I suspect when we look back at some point in the future, the big changes will seem to have sprung from this period. Obviously, the direction and stance that Microsoft takes will have a profound influence on the computing industry and business at large. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft...

I went along to pubcamp in melbourne yesterday, looking at where Web 2.0 might go next and was clearly the oldest bloke in the audience (fortunately richard walsh was involved in the debate so I was not the oldest overall)The real timetracking of twitter hasshtags was impressive, and i guess the general consensus was content is king, but it is "hard to make a buck" (Stephen Mayne) and the advertising networks have the money in their pockets already. So where does that leave the humble content creator? Do you sell your soul to google (yahoo! etc) or can you keep your digital rights and expect a a tiny bit of value to flow back to the content creator. Or is the general perception going to remain, if its on the net, its free to copy (and reuse).Special applause...
The future of humanity?
2008-06-17 01:18:00

A Test of Leadership: Charting the Future of U.S. Higher Education
2008-06-07 22:06:00
Three hundred and seventy years after the first college in our fledgling nation was established to train Puritan ministers in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, it is no exaggeration to declare that higher education in the United States has become one of our greatest success stories. Whether America’s colleges and universities are measured by their sheer number and variety, by the...
The Future of the Internet (part 1)
2008-06-06 11:59:00
Just got back from an entertaining and informative talk with Jonathan Zittrain as part of the Guardian's series of internal lectures "The Future of Journalism". To encapsulate the two-hour presentation, Zittrain fears that as a result of the security and privacy issues we face the internet will become increasingly "locked-down". This will result in the disappearance of the character that makes the itnernet itself so productive of new ideas - generativity. He is interested in averting this grim future, and explores ways we can encourage the internet and its user group to govern itself in a more sensible fashion. At times he is worrying in his pinpoint description of the ramshackle and idealistic generation-old infrastructure we have built our modern system of communication and thus commerce on. He is hilariously irreverent in his view of the power, and powers, of technology. His retrospective of the invention of the internet and the personal computer industry, and the hardware...

Should NASCAR consider one Cup date per track for the future NASCAR Cup Ser
2008-06-06 00:17:00
Now let me state the obvious, I am a huge NASCAR fan that has been watching the sport since the early 1990’s, I’ve watched drivers like Jeff Gordon make his first Cup Series start at the 1992 Hooters 500 in Atlanta, while at the same time, same race, watched Richard Petty in his last race. Since those days in the NASCAR, there has been a lot of changes to the NASCAR landscaping which has included not only adding several racetracks, but also the removal of North Wilkesboro and Rockingham just to name a few.In recent years or even recent weeks, the talk has been centered around not only NASCAR vs. the Kentucky Speedway with them wanting a Cup date while NASCAR saying that that market already has several dates, but shortening the schedule which brings up many new issues and now with souring gasoline and diesel prices, NASCAR and track owners are finding themselves with empty seats, but yet at the same time, higher television ratings which I’m not surprised with considering the ra...
Is this the future?
2008-06-06 00:00:00
Bear with me for a minute, while I ask this question. There is a real neighborhood, which we will discuss hypothetically. I wouldnt want to start a serious problem, and theory is enough in this case. Lets call it Sub A, for subdivision A. Sub A has a lot of foreclosed properties. The homes sold for around $360,000 a few years ago, and now the foreclosures, because of condition and desperation, are selling for around $300,000. Some foreclosed properties are a little lower at about $275,000. I was wondering today, as I worried about the sales in Sub A, that this might be a trend that will continue. The owner who is ok now might get in financial trouble. He will not be abl

The Future of Resume Databases
2008-06-03 20:50:00
I wanted to share with you an article that came to my inbox from CollegeRecruiter.com. As some of you may know, I am the founder of an organization called Empower Me. We recently made the decision to begin a career site for the organization, and in meetings with my colleagues, I decided against having a purchasable resume database. Some people were uneasy with that decision until I explained to them that the site should represent a chance for companies to strengthen their brand and commitment to diversity. See, the one thing I always disliked was the fact that these job sites sold the same access to everyone....corporations, agencies, everyone. How is that fair or competitive? I don't know about you, but I like to get creative with my searches. I enjoy the thrill of the hunt for the perfect candidates. I don't believe job boards are where recruiters should turn for the real intense searches. For a quick volume solution to horde resumes, yeah sure, they're fine. But I nev...

Microsoft Windows 7: What the Future Holds

Microsoft plans a completely new GUI for versions of Windows 7 running on the kind of high-powered computers that now run Vista. Provide Your Input on the Future of the Downtown Ann Arbor Library!
2008-06-03 05:44:00
The Downtown Ann Arbor Library has been through two major expansions since opening its doors in 1957.  In 2007 growing needs prompted the library authority to hire a consultant to assess the 20 year feasibility of the existing facilities.  Ten focus groups and over 100 users worked toward determining future library needs.  The results of the study prompted the hiring of Luckenbach/Ziegelman Architects to undertake the future construction/expansion project.  In combination with the library project, the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority proposed a plan to replace the parking lot on the north side of the Library with an underground parking garage.  Working together, both authorities developed a joint public survey to help guide future plans.   Now the Ann Arbor Public is invited to discuss future plans for the Library.  There are two more sessions (held in the downtown library’s multi-purpose room): Wednesday, 10am - Noon Sunday (Jun...
Back To The Future
2008-06-02 14:05:00
Time Warner and GE goin' to The Chapel of Love? Yeah, yeah, yea-yeah-yeah. Newsweek: A goal for GE would be to avoid the huge tax bill it would incur in selling NBC Universal outright to Time Warner in a transaction valued in the tens of billions of dollars, say the sources familiar with the situation. One model for such a transaction might be the deal GE struck in 2003 to bulk up NBC by combining it with Universal, then owned by Vivendi. That combination left the French company with a hefty, though minority, 20 percent stake in NBC Universal. Under a similar scenario, Time Warner and GE could combine most, if not all, of their entertainment operations into a newly formed separate company, in which Time Warner would be the majority owner. The bet is investors would better recognize the value of a pure entertainment entity with big media brands, propelling the stocks of parent companies Time Warner and GE. And if that happens, the two Jeffs might just live out their corporate car...
S&R poll: Barack to the future?
2008-06-02 00:00:00
The results of our latest S&R poll are in. Q: Now that the Democratic and GOP primaries are settled, who do you expect to win the presidential election in November? 1: Barack Obama (151) 2: John McCain (14) 3: A third party candidate (7) Frankly, we’re a little stunned at the gap, given that we asked about the expectation, but as they say on Survivor, the tribe has spoken. We do want to say welcome to the seven voters who expect Obama and McCain to lose to a third-party challenger - is this your first trip to Earth? Our next poll, which asks about your expectations regarding gasoline prices, is now posted in the column to the right. As always, S&R polls are unscientific. No wagering, please…
Is the climate changing in Sri Lanka?
2008-05-31 11:04:00
Is the climate changing in Sri Lanka? By DhaneshWisumperumawww.Nation.lk------------ Climate change is among the major issues discussed in today?s world. Though it was not a key topic a year ago, it grabbed theworld?s attention during the year 2007. The facts revealed by the fourth assessment report published during the last year changed the attitude of the people. Their own experience of the changes taking place all over the world also contributed towards this change. Climate change, its impacts, adaptation, mitigation and climate politics are among the favoured themes now. In the Sri Lankan scenario, climate change will have an impact on a number of fields, which could eventually devastate the agriculture, economy, environment etc. Researches have repeatedly pointed out that tropical region will experience the worst impacts of the changing climate.
