The Golden Key
2007-12-09 23:06:00
Moderate Muslims. We search for this mysterious and illusive species as fervently and hopefully as we search for life on other planets. We have set up high-tech listening posts all around the world in the hope of retrieving a single signal from them. Any small message at all, even the most fragmentary sign that would prove their existence. There is, we have been told, good reason to believe that they're out there, but unfortunately so far we've been unable to substantiate this belief. However, these disheartening results have in no way diminished our enthusiasm for this worthy project, or caused us to lose confidence in the probability of its eventual success. We just keep listening and hoping. These Moderate Muslims, we have been advised, are the Golden Key to winning this War on Terror -- or more precisely, this Islamic War against the West. It is to them we must turn to solve these intractable problems. Because, our experts have assured us, the problems inherent in Islam can on...

Movie Review: The Golden Compass deserves a Golden Turkey
2007-12-09 16:48:00
People will react to The Golden Compass differently. I therefore rate it a/an: "A" for ACLU members. "B-" for doctrinaire atheists. "C" for agnostics. "C-" for deists. "D+" if you're still impressed by CG special effects. "D" for Ozzy Osbourne fans. "D-" for everybody else. To my free-thinking friends: I'm sorry to report that you'll have to wait until next year for your Winter Solstice classic. To those who, under the edict of your slave masters, plan on avoiding The Golden Compass (TGC): Don't worry that you're depriving your children of fine entertainment, for TGC is the most relentlessly dreary and unsatisfying children's movie since the Dick Cheney version of Miracle on 34th Street. Let's get the plot out of the way: TGC is set in an alternative Britain ruled by an all-powerful theocratic government called the "Magisterium." The distinguishing feature of this world is that people's "souls" exist outside of their bodies as animals called "Daemons." A noble, Lo...
What I did for love (TA at the gay pride parade)

(Why yes, that post title is a reference to A Chorus Line. Man, I’m cheesy.) It was the night before the parade, and I approached my mother in the kitchen to ask her again if I could attend the gay pride parade. She, again, refused. “Please,” I whined, “my gay friends are counting on me to be ...

Let’s be clear: translating a book to the screen is hard, really hard and it shouldn’t be underestimated. Things you can get away with in a book you simply can’t on film for a range of reasons. It’s not the same medium, you have less time and, in some cases, things that are palatable in ...
The Golden Compass stirs religion
2007-12-09 10:36:00
I have always fancied children's books since I started reading Harry Potter, and Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series has always been my interest since a friend of mine from Britain introduced the novel to me, and yet up to now I still hadn't have a copy and had not even go out to the cinemas to watch its first in the series, The Golden Compass (the other are The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, don't know which one's the second and third, though). I have once got to a site where it...

How Singapore stays at the top of the game
2007-12-09 04:31:00
How Singapore stays at the top of the gameĀ  With its 7.9 per cent growth last year, it has been called a developed country growing at developing-nation rates. Bryan Lee explains this anomaly. IT IS almost a given that in the global rankings for economic growth, poor countries typically fill the top spots while rich nations bring up the rear. Last year’s top three - Azerbaijan, the Maldives and Angola - clocked in impressive expansion of between 18 and 31 per cent. But they were anything but wealthy: Their citizens took home an average income of less than US$3,000 (S$4,300) that year. In contrast, the United States, the world’s biggest economy, grew a paltry 2.9 per cent. Against this long-standing trend, Singapore stands out as an anomaly. At 7.9 per cent, Singapore’s economic performance puts it more in the league of emerging growth stars such as China and India than in the comparatively tired ranks of the US, Europe and Japan. Yet the Republic is one of the most...
Christians attack ?The Golden Compass?

In yet another stunning display of rampant stupidity, religious folks decry the latest blockbuster movie as denigrating to religion! “Every single religious character is a terror in these books,” said McCaffrey. “There isn’t one who isn’t. FRIDAY NIGHTS AND THE GATES ARE LOW
2007-12-09 02:40:00
On Friday 7th December the opening match of the FIFA World Club Championship was played between Waitakere United of New Zealand and Sepahan of Iran. In this the third tournament to be held in Japan FIFA decided to alter the format slightly in order to boost attendances. Having attended in 2005, I would agree with their idea of the league winners from the host nation competing, as surely all games they play would be sold out. So with the opening game moved back to a Friday I decided to alter my schedule in order to attend such a game.In the meantime the winners of the six confederations were playing out their own cup competitions to decide who would be there in Japan. In the Asian Cup Urawa Red Diamonds beat Sepahan 3-1 to qualify in their own right. But then I realised that Sepahan had been awarded a place at the tournament as only one team from the host country were allowed to compete. At the time Urawa held a ten point league, with four games to go and so the decision seemed fair...

The Greening of their Litter Box
2007-12-08 18:54:00
Recently, I have been giving much thought to finding ways to improve our kittens' litter box problems. Actually, we don't really have any problems with the litter boxes...with the exception of the fact that they stink! Spike and Trouble each have their own litter box. Both boxes are cleaned regularly and they both have the dome that goes over the pan with a little entrance for the kittens to climb in and out. They domes each have a filter that can be replaced. The kittens usually do their business at the same time. It's sort of like "tandem pooping".I've been thinking of how to get that stinky smell to be not so stinky. The other day, I was in the midst of cleaning the litter boxes, when the stench was so bad that I started dry heaving, then gagging, and eventually vomiting into one of the litter boxes. Hubby came running downstairs to see if I was alright. When he realized what had happened, he started laughing uncontrollably.Me: Oh, I see. It amuses you to see your wife throwi...
The Ghost Of FCC Past
2007-12-08 15:37:00
Eddie Fritts once put a subtle hit on me. To nonsequitur. The boyish FCC head Kevin Martin's looks belie his "Jersey mob" mentality. 1,500 hundred lawyers, lobbyists, and assorted whores were up Martin's ass at the annual FCC Chairman's Dinner in DC this week. Former longtime NAB chair Fritts (I thought he'd die in the job) is the only person who could escape the dinner with his balls intact after attacking Martin (in a friendly, roast-like manner). Fritts: Kevin looks so young even Mark Foley would throw him back." (The Repub congo resigned for coming on to young boy pages.) Martin skewered cable TV on his verbal spit. Martin asked all cable lobbyists in the room to raise their hands. ?I want to start out by apologizing that we had to remove the knives from your tableThe rest of the roast here at Multichannel News. With my friend John Dingell breathing down his neck. Martin abandoned his CIA secrecy and revealed upcoming FCC votes to God and everyone! B & C A first. The co...
