The Golden Rule of Data Manipulation
2008-06-11 17:48:00
Introduction There is a very simple rule when it comes to storing (and returning) data, which I see violated all the time, making life so much more complicated for everyone involved.  In case you haven't noticed, that's a common theme I discuss here on this blog -- different ways programmers make life more difficult for themselves, instead of simply following good practices and doing things the easy way.  This is yet another example of that situation. The "Golden Rule of Data Manipulation" is a simple, but important rule that you should always follow when designing a database,  writing database code, or really writing any application code at all for that matter: "It is always easier and more flexible to combine data elements rather than to break them apart" In other words: Concatenation is easy. Parsing is hard.  Often, very hard -- or even impossible depending on the data. Problems with Parsing It is amazing how often I see people struggling with "difficult SQL problems" s...
Katie "Jordan" Price knows the golden rule!
2008-03-07 17:08:00
This is post number 2 about Katie “Jordan” Price. I am not posting this because I am a fan, but rather because I think that this is an excellent example of “hang out with less attractive people to make you look better”. Sure, maybe she has gone too far by getting all her friends to dress in lingerie, but it sure gets the point across. I know that I can’t take my eyes off her looking at these pictures, nor do I want to.I follow this rule in my own life. I know what you are thinking - it is hard to find less attractive friends when you are only 4 foot 6, 328 pounds with a hairy back and an eye patch. That’s why I spend a lot of time at the circus. Well, that and my erotic fascination with clowns … and elephants. Mmmmmm ... trunk!

H ere is a graphic with thirteen (13) variations of The Golden Rule by their religious association. If we all know it, why can't we follow it? Well of course we could follow it if we choose to do so, but we tend to follow the 14th variation of The Golden Rule.  i.e.  He who has the Gold Makes the Rules.   Click image for the larger version. The Ecumenical Movement And The Golden Rule
2008-01-23 11:49:00
Is this the beginnings of the one-world faith/religion that shall come in the Last Days? I don’t think so because the movement has been in effect for some time, but this is definitely an open declaration that the movement is well and is being pushed to all and sundry from the United Nations, starting with the ...

The Golden Rule Is WRONG!!
2007-10-01 03:18:00
Yes, that’s right - “Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You,” long regarded as the simplest model for showing respect for others, is totally, irrefutably wrong.

The Golden Rule, The Platinum Rule and more about nice people
2007-08-30 04:24:00
Sometimes I would listen to friends or loved ones complaining about their colleagues or bosses. Well, so far I'm a bit lucky for I've never seen / involved in any office politics or encountered any colleagues who pissed me off. Through my working life, I should say that I'm lucky enough to meet a lot of nice people. It is also my principle to be nice to the people around me.In my last trip back to Kuantan, together with some friends, we had coffee with my best friend's uncle who shared with us the principles behind The Golden Rule and The Platinum Rule. The Golden Rule states that "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." This statement basically translated that says to treat others the way you would like to be treated. On the other hand, The Platinum Rule says that "Treat others the way they want to be treated", which is even tougher to achieve. Now the focus of relationships shifts from "this is what I want, so I'll give everyone the same thing" (under the Golden Ru...
Using The Golden Rule In Dating, Part 2
2007-07-13 18:51:00
What not to do on a date If you've managed to dress well, arrive on time, smile your way through and be kind to everyone you've met, then you're more than half way through impressing your date. However there are still a few pitfalls that you should make sure to avoid: · Do not hog the conversation. Listen twice as much as you talk and your date is sure to think you are the best conversationalist ever. · Do not flirt with anybody else you may meet while you are on your date. You wouldn't want it done to you, would you? · Do not invade the other person's space. You need to respect your date's boundaries and not try to solicit private information or come on too heavy. · Do not ever gossip about others or reveal intimate secrets about your other dates. It implies you cannot be trusted and your date will be on guard continuously. · Don't just order something that you like and expect your date to like it too. Both of you are entitled to have different tastes and preferences. · Do n...
Using The Golden Rule In Dating, Part 1
2007-07-13 18:48:00
The golden rule for dating is rightly "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Most people who go on dates do so in the hope of finding their life partner. They look for certain attributes in the person they are dating, which will make them want to spend their lives with this one person. On the other hand, certain boorish behaviors can be a real turn-off. Your behavior on a date is a sure indicator of things to come. One of the surefire ways of impressing your date is by putting yourself in their shoes and seeing your behavior from their point of view. Don't forget, every action has an equal and opposite reaction, so.... do whatever you would like done to you and whatever you do, expect the same in return. Don't be late for your date Nobody likes to be made to wait. The thought uppermost in most people's minds whilst waiting, is whether they are being stood up. This in itself is enough to dampen even the most enthusiastic of spirits. And if your date is a stickler f...

The Golden Rule of Design: KISS
2007-03-03 17:46:09
A sincere thanks goes out to my borderline insane visual communication from my latter high school years - it all started when we had to build a scale house out of paper materials, architecturally acurate to the last detail. What I failed to see that my fantastic H shaped house had a roof that was incredibly complex, nearly making me the project deadline trying to figure out how to build a roof for the thing! My teacher told me something thing that really stuck, and it continues to be a good way of kick starting the creative process when I find myself staring aimlessly into space. The rule is called KISS - Keep It Simple, Stupid. The stupid part is a reflection of how many of us tend to act out of instinct - so many ideas are floating around that we want to do everything and anything. When one sits down and start scribbling how this will work, perhaps only one person can make sense of it - can you guess who? The user is not stupid, the designer is stupid for expecting others to reali...
on grandstanding vs the ethic of reciprocity (aka the Golden Rule)
2007-02-27 16:47:00
Don't you just hate it when people "grandstand" at your, or other people's expense? Have you ever seen people giving crude, offhand, unfair, let-the-public-know remarks against another person without thinking of the consequences? It's sad, especially when the remarks given turn out to be blatant lies because the "grandstander" ought to have gotten their facts ironed out in the first place. These are some of the things that people do that can really irritate or piss anyone off. And it sure would be a darn good sight to see the offender with their foot in their mouth (although I would love to see a heel and ankle fit through it as well). While I have been known to have committed these things in the past, I have been the unfortunate recipient of quite a number of these unconscionable acts as well. And so, having said that, I truly and deeply apologize to those who have been unfortunate enough to see my bad side (wow, the past few days have really given me time to reflect on a lot of t...
