Album Review: Justin Townes Earle - ?The Good Life?
2008-04-01 15:30:00 Justin Townes Earle has given us an interesting, compelling album that sways and strides like a young, charming wino; The Good Life contains moments of picturesque reflection, moments of intense focus, and moments of grinning exuberance–all of which are informed and intensified by the sense of candor that accompanies that fourth glass of wine ...
Paris Hilton lives the good life
2008-03-22 11:47:00 Found something somewhat original. After some intense zooming, rotating, and cropping, I'm the proud new owner of an authentic rest-of-March Paris Hilton schedule. If you guessed that Paris Hilton's life is full of safaris, beauty pageants, and private jets, go ahead and give yourself a point.

The Good Life II ?
2008-03-12 21:17:00 Not since Felicity Kendall and her goofy husband dug up the back yard have I seen something so nutty in the self sustainability/home gardening department.Fresh from Bag's Department of Nutty Ideas and Wrong Thinking, we have do it yourself bread making. Not the store bought packages in the bread maker, but plough the back yard and scatter variety.Baker and organic food campaigner Andrew Whitley believes the answer lies in your back garden and that it's time, as he puts it, to "bake your lawn". He is launching the Real Bread Campaign. "If wheat makes bread why not grow bread just like you grow vegetables. We think of it as being a massive prairie-style enterprise but it is just a plant like anything else. It's like grass. I think that this is a more sensible scale.

WARNING: Humor may be hazardous to your illness. Not many people see humor as an art, but I do. I think having the ability to make people laugh is an expression or application of human creative skill and imagination. Being able to respond pointedly and skillfully with wit or humor in a conversational exchange is something that most people wish they could do, including myself. I have found that there are a few simple and basic rules which govern the world of humor. As we all know, having a sense of humor is having the ability to perceive what is comica...

Whatever Happened to the Good Life?
2007-11-02 18:29:00 Illusion versus facts. A comparison of the 1950's middle class versus today's middle class...Since we're accustomed to thinking of young people and students as the shock troops of social change, explaining youthful inertia has become a national preoccupation (sadly, we expect impassivity from the middle aged). Many point to the absence of a draft as a motivating factor. Others cite the lack of contemporary examples of successful collective action to inspire faith in the efficacy of protest. But... Welcome to the Good Life (Part II of II)
2007-10-13 06:23:00 Besides staying alive and keeping up with my minimal amount of schoolwork, I had almost no responsibilities or commitments, something normally reserved for children in the summer. If you?re wondering what the benefit of that is, think of it this way: I often judge my days based on how productive I am, whether it be exercising, engaging in social events, finishing tasks or doing work. When I had cancer, I could literally watch television the entire day and that would be considered productive. That mindset was entirely unique to cancer and I don?t expect will ever be duplicated.I had to quit piano lessons, my soccer team I always joined in the fall, and teaching Sunday school. I quit using my Ab Crunch Trainer. I quite shaving, shampooing and bathing daily. Who was I trying to impress? I figured a shower every two days would do fine.I quit worrying about a balanced diet, and instead took advantage of the delightful dishes my parents and aunt provided me. My friends Ink and Ho-Train ca...
Welcome to the Good Life (Part I of II)
2007-10-08 22:41:00 People bought me things ? some people I'd never met before. Expensive things, too, like video games, an mp3 player and a portable CD player. NoCommonSense's dad wanted to impart some Beatles culture on me, so he bought me 1, their greatest hits. My rabbi bought me the new Ja Rule CD, Rule 3:36, which I found quite humorous. I wanted him to listen with me, but he wasn?t so into gangsta rap.My parents and Aunt Flojo bought me whatever I wanted to eat, and rather enthusiastically if I might add. Huge, fatty, delicious milkshakes and greasy, heart-clogging foods were practically shoved down my throat. If I had the ability and the desire to become a fatass, they would?ve gladly financed my extra pounds.School became like a circus for me, attending when I could and taking breaks when I wanted. I dropped one class, and I spent those 90 minutes in the guidance office with two other kids that had no second period. Try to picture the most worthless conversation you've had in your life, and...

Weekend Review: Rural Renaissance: Renewing the Quest for the Good Life
2007-05-13 22:45:00 Rural Renaissance: Renewing the Quest for the Good Life: New Society Publishers, 2004Editor's note: Welcome to the Weekend Review, another addition to our weekend lineup. Each week, one of our writers will review a book, film, event, multimedia product, etc., that will relate to your quest to green the good life. Ever dreamed about quitting the nine-to-five routine, getting out of the city or suburbs, and moving to a little farm in the country to raise organic vegetables and chickens? Of course you have: most of us trying to live more sustainable lives while maintaining an otherwise conventional existence likely share some version of that dream. John Ivanko and Lisa Kivirist's Rural Renaissance: Renewing the Quest for the Good Life gives a reader a first-hand account of their efforts to live that dream, and shares the knowledge and wisdom they've gained while building both a business and a family in central Wisconsin. I expected a "how to" book when I first s...

The Good Life
2007-05-11 06:49:00 Nebraska's state slogan was originally "Nebraska...the good life" (it was just recently changed to something else but the original slogan is still on the Welcome to Nebraska sign). Now, I was completely prepared to not dispute the original state slogan. Quite the opposite, I fully intended to embrace it. Until I realized there's a major problem in Nebraska, Omaha specifically. Bugs and insects, namely TICKS. Omaha ticks don't mind their own business; they attack. I'm not kidding. The first couple of times I saw them, crawling on my arm, I had no idea what they were, in the toilet they went. On the night I came home from a hike and found SEVEN of them on my body, I naturally freaked out. Searched the internet, suspecting they were some kind of fat, flat flea. Found out that these invaders on my body were Lyme disease carrying Deer Ticks.I've had a small phobia since then. I wish I were exaggerating but I can honestly say I've lost sleep and think about deer ticks enti...
The Good Life
2007-05-01 19:44:00 Ah the good life, listening to an old geezer crone!Seriously though, Richard and I were privileged to see the legend that is Tony Bennett at the Royal Albert Hall last night.Boy what a concert!I am amazed that a man of 80 has so much stamina. He was on stage for a 90 minutes set with no breaks and he covered a great deal of songs from his repertoire. What was truly amazing was when he got the sound guys to switch off all the mics and sang a rendition of Fly Me to the Moon only with the aid of a guitar on backing. This 80 year old filled the Royal Albert Hall with sound, his vocals were clear, crisp and bang on the mark. I have never witnessed anyone sing so well with such volume and make it all seem so effortless.I can see why so many people raved about the Brat Pack when they were in the hey day.Tony Bennett truly is a musical legend and I feel very honoured to have witnessed this real gent and to have me in his company for one evening.(Read Richard's account of the concert here).

Living The Good Life
2007-04-26 06:02:00 There was an excellent article in Bloomberg a while back pertaining to luxury living that I thought I should post here. It is wicked good motivation for working hard and trying to be the best at what you do.Rotating Rooms, Yacht Berths Spur Dubai, Moscow Apartment Boom Starts of with..."Parking your $115,000 Maserati in Manhattan will soon be a snap. A luxury tower planned for 11th Avenue features an elevator that lifts cars to the apartment owner's floor, where they can be parked near the entry door. The cost for 4,000 square feet: as much as $16 million."In the middle..."In Dubai, the most populous of the seven states in the United Arab Emirates, changing the view from your apartment will require only a push of a button. Developer Omniyat Properties' 24-story high- rise, planned for 2009, boasts apartments that project scenic images, such as the Manhattan skyline, onto its windows. Living and dining rooms in units costing up to 9 million dirhams ($2.5 million) will also rotate 3...
