Food Diary of the Guardian : Cairo
2008-05-28 16:59:00 There is a special report in the British Guardian newspaper about Food prices crisis in the world , Yesterday I found out it was Cairo's turn in the report. Chris McGreal and Jack Shenker did a fantastic job in transferring the bitter image of the situation in Egypt , already no Official media journalist dares to transfer the image like this from the working low class Jack Shenker is sharing with the whole world the diary and the diet of an Egyptian simple working class family "The Arabys" in one single week. Chris McGreal posted a podcast and a video with a feature about the bread shortages ,hunger and unrest in Egypt. Please read it, listen to it and watch it because the coverage is fantastic , I tell you that Al Ahram does not dare to publish something like this , after all Al Ahram and co. say that the latest economic decisions came to save the class of the Arabys and Hoda "featured in McGreal report" !! I just want to clear something the food prices cr...

Snoop Gives A...Rare...Political Interview To The Guardian
2008-04-05 01:37:00 Well, chalk Snoop Dogg up with the rappers who are willing to make controversial political statements - hey, Ice-T can't own the game! Snoop Dogg sat down for an interview with Emma Forrest of the UK Guardian in an article published yesterday, and said he's earned the privilege of having an album called Ego Trippin, after having nine records in the top 10 every time. But when Forrest broached the subject of race in America and Barack Obama's recent disassociation from Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Snoop revealed just how closely he still follows politics, and the conversation took a sharp turn from music and the entertainment biz...to headspinning politics.
News: The Deal sisters talk to "The Guardian"

The Guardian comes knocking...
2008-02-28 19:57:00 Thank you very much! This is one link to The Copenhagen Report that, in my mind, I've always wanted - but yet that came completely out of the blue.Fantastic. In fact, I'm chuffed (link for non-Brits).You see, if I was to answer the timeless question (in many versions), "which newspaper would you take with you if you were stranded on a desert island" (you know, that question...) I would most certainly say The Guardian (though I must admit I would miss the sports section of The Toronto Star).Incidently, on a related note, if stranded on the same island and forced to choose between having an iPod filled with music and a sexy female companion of my choice, I'd take Pernille Rosendahl (one of my favourite Danes...formerly of the Danish band Swan Lee, these days The Storm) without a moment of hesitation) and allow her to serenade me to sleep every evening. Ahhh......and now back to normal blogging.

Mass Media: Weapons of mass distortion (The Guardian)
2008-02-04 13:11:00 An industry whose task should be to filter out falsehood has become a conduit for propaganda and second hand news Where once journalists were active gatherers of news, now they have generally become mere passive processors of unchecked, second-hand material, much of it contrived by PR to serve some political or commercial interest. Not journalists, but churnalists. An industry whose primary task is to filter out falsehood has become so vulnerable to manipulation that it is now involved in the mass production of falsehood, distortion and propaganda. There never was a time when news media were perfect. Journalists have always worked with too little time and too little certainty; with interference from owners and governments; with laws that intimidate and inhibit the search for truth. But the evidence in this new book, Flat Earth News, suggests our tendency to recycle ignorance is far worse than it was.Read the full story at the guardianRead the "Flat Earth News" Boo...
Writers' Rooms By The Guardian.
2008-01-17 20:17:00 Writers' Rooms By The Guardian. The Guardian has come up with this idea of collection of brief articles where the writers' work: 'Writer's Rooms'. As of now their collection has come to count of fifty. One thing we did find common in most of the writers' rooms: lots of books, some clutter & a computer. Least now we know where the creativity is created. Here is a picture of one of the writers' room: 'Diana Athill'.My flat is small, so I work on the table in the living-room, which means eating on a tray on my knee except when feeding guests. Then I transfer all my work stuff to my bedroom and open the table up to be eaten off, so I rarely entertain. I always scribble first drafts in longhand, then type on my laptop, print out, revise, re-type, scribble next bit and repeat process, hoping that the final print-out of the whole won't need revision, but it usually does. I'm a hopeless dummy about computers, using mine only as a typewriter and for emails, but I do love writing on ...

The Guardian: Not iPhone Rival from Microsoft (by now)
2008-01-09 22:49:00 U.S. software group Microsoft will not launch a product that competes directly with Apple Inc’s iPhone, Chairman Bill Gates said in an interview with Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. “No, we won’t do that. In the so-called smart phone business we will concentrate solely on software with our Windows Mobile programme,” Gates was quoted as saying in the interview published on Wednesday. “We have partnerships with a lot of device manufacturers from Samsung to Motorola and this variety brings us significantly more than if we would make our own mobile phone,” he added. It invites many contributions as the joint brainchild by the Three Monks – Wade of The Middle Way, Kenton of Zen-Inspired Self Development, and Albert of Urban Monk.Net. I encourage readers to explore their blogs and to write an article for this wonderful project.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------People often sense obstacles prevent them from experiencing love and realizing dreams. Why do obstacles to compassion arise in your own life and seem to persist? What can you do about that? How often do you interpret them as opportunities to learn to love yourself more deeply and to forgive more unconditionally? By deciding you will confront obstacles, you’re ultimately moving to confront shadows. You are slowly uncovering how you measure meaning in your life, and eliminating those things that have little or no intrinsic va...

2007-12-10 13:37:00 Sky News has played an invaluable role in building the Sky brand, making it an established part of the British broadcasting ecology. It does not deserve to be confined to only 25% of British homes - then allowed to wither on the vine.
The Faceless And The Dead - The Guardian And Iraq's Refugees
2007-12-07 01:14:00 by Media Lens “See The World Through Their Eyes” For several months now, non-UK visitors accessing the Guardian website have been shown an endlessly revolving animation in three segments that would not look out of place on FAIR, ZNet, or indeed Media Lens. The second segment shows a nervous-looking woman in traditional Arab dress with intense flames reflected in her eyes. The third has two grief-stricken women, again in Arab dress, with one carrying a frightened child - their images are reflected in a soldier’s goggles. The animation ends with the words: “See the world through their eyes. The Guardian Weekly Global Network (theguardian weekly.co.uk)” These images are shown hour after hour, week after week, to people visiting the site. This surely is a newspaper subjecting Western policies to fierce critical analysis. It must be focussing relentlessly on Iraqi, Afghan and other civilian suffering as a result of these policies. But in reality, the Guardian has a lon...

Amy Winehouse (a name draped in irony)
2007-09-03 14:32:00 Mark Ravenhill over at The Guardian has an interesting blog article on Amy Winehouse’s rapid spiral into addiction. Conversations on Consciousness from the Guardian
2007-08-13 13:26:00 The last three links are interviews of Francis Crick by Sue Blackmore. Imagine sitting by a California swimming pool surrounded by flowers and hummingbirds and trying to interview the great biologist Francis Crick (http://nobelprize.org/nobel_pr-izes/medicine/laureates/1962/cr-ick-bio.html), writes Sue Blackmore. If it sounds peaceful, it wasn't. At the age of 78 and in failing health, Francis was more than a match for me. "Now let me say why I think all that's nonsense," he said at one point, and "You ask that only because you're interested in Buddhism". But what a treat it was to be able to delve into his theories of consciousness and discover the reasons why he thinks we'll one day find the neural basis for consciousness. My partner, Adam Hart-Davis (http://www.adam-hart-davis.org-/), enjoyed the visit too. When we arrived at the door Francis greeted us warmly and then dismissed Adam instantly "You can go to the kitchen with Odile (http://news.independent.co.uk/-people/obit...

The Guardian, Raimondo, and Ron Paul: A Match Made in Munich

Maggie talks to The Guardian
2007-07-08 17:13:00 "Gyllenhaal is good at subverting expectations and asserting control. The first time the world sat up and took notice of her, as Lee Holloway in Secretary, she was bent over a desk in a pencil skirt, playing a submissive in a warped but oddly tender sadomasochistic relationship with her boss. Gyllenhaal breathed life into the role, making a character who could have been played as a passive sex object into something much more subtle and intriguing. Her latest film, "Sherrybaby", begins the day 22-year-old Sherry Swanson walks out, free and sober, from the prison she entered three years before as a heroin addict, determined to regain custody of her young daughter. Shot in 25 days over a hot New Jersey summer, it's a relatively small-scale project for Gyllenhaal who, since Secretary, has enjoyed considerable clout in Hollywood. Her connection to the film began six years ago, in 2001, when Laurie Collyer, who wrote and directed it, took the script to Sundance. There she met Naomi Foner...

Smoking ban definitely not a good idea ? by the Guardian.
2007-05-31 00:00:00 "The Guardian" just published a wonderful column titled "Is the smoking ban a good idea?" (here). And note the "reply" of some guy at the bottom -- saying that if he quit smoking N years- ago and still feels like crap, ...

Colonel Westhusing, Jane Jacobs, & the Guardian Moral Syndrome by Evan Palm
2007-04-07 01:14:00 -- @page { size: 21.59cm 27.94cm; margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } -->Most of the time, death is an occasion for sadness. How much sadness will vary with how close one was to the deceased, the circumstances of their passing, and the character and charisma of the departed. It is always more poignant when the person was young. or there was a miscarriage of justice or the person had special talents or genius such as in music or writing or, in the particular case I want to touch on, in philosophy. The world is short of philosophers. It always has been and I think it always will be. If we had more philosophers, and we listened to them more carefully, the world would be a dramatically improved place. Every time a philosopher dies, there should be a pause in the life of a country and a summing up. At age 44, Colonel Westhusing was found dead in Baghdad, It was ruled a suicide and appears to have been the result of deep depression and disgust brought on by the conduct of Amer...
Iranians Are a Very Uncivilised Bunch by Terry Jones, The Guardian
2007-04-05 17:52:00 In one of my comments to Saad K’s post I had commented on the Iranian national pride. Then yesterday Ahmadinejad announced the release of the 15 British sailors as a ‘gift’ to the British. Here is an interesting satirical piece from the Guardian where Terry Jones, a Python (has appeared in and directed several Monty Python movies), makes a comparison between the treatment given by Iran to the British sailors and the treatment by the Allied forces of their prisoners in the War on Terror. I am sure most of you would be against the double standards on display here and agree fully with this brilliant piece. Call that Humiliation? No hoods. No electric shocks. No beatings. These Iranians clearly are a very uncivilised bunch I share the outrage expressed in the British press over the treatment of our naval personnel accused by Iran of illegally entering their waters. It is a disgrace. We would never dream of treating captives like this - allowing them to smoke cigarett...

The Guardian revela extraterritorialidad de bloqueo a Cuba

The US-controlled Iraqi governme
2007-01-17 02:40:02 Kamil Mahdi The Guardian The US-controlled Iraqi government is preparing to remove the country’s most precious resource from national control…. ….Government officials, including the deputy prime minister, Barham Salih, have announced that the draft oil law is ready to be presented to the cabinet for approval. Salih was an enthusiast for the US-led invasion of Iraq, and the Kurdish militia-led administration he represents has signed illegal oil agreements that it is now seeking to legalise. Given that parliament has not been meeting regularly, it is likely that legislation will be rushed through after a deal brokered under the auspices of the US occupation. Iraq’s oil industry is in a parlous state as a result of sanctions, wars and occupation. The government, through the ministry of oil’s inspector general, has issued damning reports of large-scale corruption and theft across the oil sector. Many competent senior technical officials have been sacke...
