Thanks to a million variations of HBO on my cable system, I found a car movie I'd never seen before: "The Hitcher". From 2007. Sean Bean, Sophia Bush. Just right for this morning, this was a thoroughly violent (although sometimes predictable in the sense of "don't go thru that door") "B"-grade movie. A young college couple (driving an Olds 442) picks up a hitchhiker out in the middle of nowhere, who of course turns out to be an absolute psychopath. Gee, who ever guess that a raggedly-dressed hitchhike-r by the side of the road wouldn't be safe to pick up? This does of course result in numerous grissly murders, long chase scenes over the isolated southwest, and (just to irk the viewers) stereotypically-stupid cop-s misunderstanding who the murderer actually is - until he kills several of the...

Another crappy psychological/horror film....though I can't really say it falls into the category of "psychological"....I merely state "psychological" because whoever approved this script for filming should be psychologically evaluated. We follow two twenty-something-year-olds as they head to a friend's cabin for spring break shenanigans. On the way, they meet John Ryder...who for the rest of the film will be chasing them, killing cops and disappearing, and then chasing again.When the young man, Jim asked Ryder why he's doing all of this...his response was "you should know why"....and that was that. WTF? The movie ends, and basically all we know is that Ryder goes around killing people and he has no real identity, at least in the FBI data base. So is he really a ghost? He can't be, if he has to dislocate his own thumb to escape handcuffs. Are we really to believe that after all these abandoned cars...with dead bodies in them...that cops wouldn't at some point get suspiciou...

2007-09-18 10:48:00 A remake of this movie has just appeared at the cinemas and has been universally panned. Did the original need remaking? The answer is...possibly. The original Hitcher movie starring Rutger Hauer and C Thomas Howell is quite revered in the thriller chiller genre but certainly on a recent rewatch I felt it had lost some of its intensity. In places it feels ballsy and in others it feels messy and cheap. Back in the 1980s it was pretty horrific but in this age of near no holds barred cinema, it doesn't retain the same power. Interestingly the director never really went on to do anything else of note. Still very watchable but only a JM SUCK IT AND SEE.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE THE HITCHER FROM DVDTALKTHE MOVIE Onscreen titles at the beginning of "The Hitcher" tell us that 42,000 people are killed on American highways each year. That information, while probably accurate, is irrelevant to the content of the movie. Unless those 42,000 are all killed not by traffic accidents but by homicidal maniacs. Which seems a little high to me.
