Rumi poem in The Kite Runner movie
2008-07-08 16:07:00
i just watched the movie Kite Runner, and its a 2007 Academy Award-nominated film directed by Marc Forster based on the novel of the same name by Khaled Hosseini. if you still haven't watched it, you must. its a movie that simply touches the heart.once you watch the movie, there are two lines of the movie that remains in the mind:"there is a way to be good again.""for you, a thousand times over."i loved the poem of Mevlana Rumi recited by the main character, Amir when he was a boy, fleeing to Pakistan as refugee from homeland during Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Here is the poem (from Mathnawi 1 , 1510 - 1513):Who are we in this complicated world?if we come to sleepwe are His drowsy ones.and if we come to wakewe are in His hands.if we come to weeping,we are His cloud full of raindrops.and if we come to laughing,we are His lightning in that moment.if we come to anger and battle,it is the reflection of His wrath.and if we come to peace and pardon,it is the reflection of His love.Who...
Il cacciatore di aquiloni (The kite runner) [Soundtrack]
2008-04-14 19:43:00

So many foreign cultures are completely unknown by most people in America.  That is a national tragedy.  If we are going to make ourselves into the global police, we should know a little about the world we are policing.  For instance, we have all learned at least a little about Iraq in the past five ...

The Kite Runner: DVD Review
2008-03-02 23:21:00
This was about my only chance to see this movie, as it opened and shut – if indeed it ever showed in my home town – with the alacrity of a clam between high and low tide. Nothing could be more out of the mainstream than a subtitled movie, starring unknown and/or foreign actors, in the harsh high country of Afghanistan during the relatively idyllic period before the Soviet invasion, and under the joyless and hypocritical rule of the Taliban, who turned the place into sort of religious concentration camp, full of rules against practically every normal human recreation or amusement and enforced them with murderous severity. But it is a lovely and rewarding reaffirmation about friendship, family and finding the courage to do the right thing. It begins with images of kites, dancing in a clear blue sky – an image that is repeated over and over, as the story runs from the near present of a talented young writer, a member of the Afghan Diaspora. Amir is happily married, has just rece...

Movie Review: The Kite Runner- The ultimate guy movie
2008-02-08 00:22:00
The Kite Runner seems to have come and gone without making much of an impact. I don't remember seeing it advertised in a theater. I never heard co-workers discuss the movie or people buzz over it on television or radio. The academy didn't nominate The Kite Runner for an Oscar. Odd, because Kite Runner is one of the best movies from 2007 and the kind of film that sophisticated movie goers fawn over. Kite Runner tells a simple yet powerful, beautiful, and sometimes disgusting story: In pre-Soviet-invasion Afghanistan, Amir (Zekeria Ebrahimi and then Khalid Abdalla) lives with his upper middle class, Mustang-driving (a sweet 69), moderate father Baba (Homayoun Ershadi); his servant; and his servant's son Hassan (Ahmad Khan Mahmidzada) who also happens to be Amir's best friend. Amir and Hassan pass the time engaging the neighborhood children in kite combat. As you can imagine from the trailer, the kite scenes are the most spectacular in the movie. The kite fighting isn't just a ...

Why does this film not have showings in all major cinemas in England? We had to travel to see it but it was worth the effort. We had read the book and been to Kabul. The film is a lot more faithful to the book than most films are to history. It is of necessity condensed but no major incidents are omitted except the post traumatic suffering of the orphan. China looks like the real place. Hassan is most delightfully portrayed. I do not think the sense of Amir's remorse is as well communicated in the film . The violence is done with sensitivity so the rating is kept to 12PG. The Taliban brutality is understated, with only one half time stoning for adultery at the football stadium.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
2008-01-21 10:52:00
This is a book that will live for ever. In it Khaled Hosseini has accomplished what many writers, most unsuccessfully, try to achieve. It’s the big stories, those turning points in history, which often attract us. They automatically have something to say, we might believe, something that needs to be aired, perhaps explained. So wars, revolutions, social upheavals, periods of turmoil, internecine struggles, ideological conflicts, all of these are the natural territory for the story teller. They are the backdrop that adds potentially unlimited drama, the context that can involve, inform and enlighten. But often writers are not up to the task. The attraction of that big issue is greater than the powers of judgment needed to create the right balance when the smallness of the story’s detail is pitched against the vast potential dominance of its setting. The balance, therefore, is often a fine one and, because of the power of the setting, the story is often belittled or, more usually,...

With adaptations of novels there's always that question of what the film would have been like watching if you would have first read the novel instead. Having not read The Kite Runner before seeing the film by director Marc Forster, the story with its many twists had me surprised and very emotional. However, in relation to other adaptations, of which Atonement is a great example, The Kite Runner feels to give away that it's based on a novel. The film is very straight forward. It isn't a cinema piece. The film is very much centered on its story which has clearly become the film's main focus. This can be applauded, stating that this finally is a film again which makes telling a solid and engaging story its main aim, but also detested, making no full use of film as a grand visual medium. The Kite Runner hardly is of any interest when it comes to cinematography. There's not especially great camera movement or photography providing for breathtaking images. The entire film seems to be...
The Kite Runner and Atonement Compared
2008-01-18 03:53:00
It’s interesting to observe similarities between movies, and while common themes as seen before like between The Illusionist and The Prestige are classic examples, there are more subtle approaches to movie plots that I’d like to discuss, highlighting ‘the presence of it in two recent releases, The Kite Runner and Atonement. The premise is simple: ...
New Movie Friday: The Kite Runner
2008-01-11 23:31:00
What do you get when you throw the Taliban, infidelity, rape, The Soviet Union and kites in one bowl? Answer: The Kite Runner, which hits theaters today. (Finally!) The film, which has been deemed "controversial" because of its male-on-male rape scene, is based on a book of the same name. It follows the story of Amir, a young boy from a well-off family in Afghanistan, and his close friend Hassan, the maid's son. The two boys play together and one of their favorite activities to do together is flying kites. Apparently, and I learned this from one of news clips in the Voxant NewsRoom, kite flying is something of a national sport in Afghanistan. I don't mean to be rude, but if that's what flies as a national sport, then I'd say that Afghanistan is competing with Canada and curling for the title of Lamest National Sport. But I'm digressing. I don't want to reveal too much of the plot for those who have yet to see the film or read the book, but the Amir and his famil...

THE KITE RUNNER: Readers reacted negatively to NY Times review
2007-12-21 00:13:00
I always look forward to film reviews at the New York Times (http://movies.nytimes.com/movi-e). Aside from the intelligent take on many recent movies, the film reviewers are excellent writers- not only are the articles insightful and informative, they are also entertaining and offer unique perspectives on how films were made, how the actors portrayed the roles and other technicalities I have yet to discover about movies. One of the most awaited film (in my list, anyway and I guess in many film lovers) is The Kite Runner (http://www.kiterunnermovie.com-/) and I absolutely looked forward to seeing the review at the NY Times. To my big disappointment, the reviewer Ms. Darghis failed to impress. In both novel and film form, “The Kite Runner” recounts a simple yet shrewd story about that favorite American pastime: self-improvement. Amir’s childhood mistake isn’t a careless juvenile offense; it’s a human stain that must be scrubbed out through self-abnegation...

The Kite Runner (Paperback)
2007-12-16 14:43:00
In his debut novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini accomplishes what very few contemporary novelists are able to do. He manages to provide an educational and eye-opening account of a country's political turmoil--in this case, Afghanistan--while also developing characters whose heartbreaking struggles and emotional triumphs resonate with readers long after the last page has been turned over. And he does this on his first try.The Kite Runner follows the story of Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant. As children in the relatively stable Afghanistan of the early 1970s, the boys are inseparable. They spend idyllic days running kites and telling stories of mystical places and powerful warriors until an unspeakable event changes the nature of their relationship forever, and eventually cements their bond in ways neither boy could have ever predicted. Even after Amir and his father flee to America, Amir remains haunte...

The Kite Runner
2007-11-28 21:51:00
The Kite Runner is a story of two boys, growing up together roaming the streets of Kabul – Afghanistan. Amir and Hassen are like brothers; both growing up without the presence of a mother but their personalities couldn’t be more different. Amir, a Sunni Muslim and the son of a very affluent businessman is educated and very well read. Hassan is an illiterate Sh’ia Muslim and his father is a servant to Amir’s father, however, Hassan has an uncanny instinct for predicting exactly where a downed kite will land. Amir often uses his superior position to tease and mistreat Hassan but in 1975, on the day of Kabul's annual kite-fighting tournament, something unspeakable happens between the two boys. Written by Amir, a 40-year-old novelist living in United States, The Kite Runner tells the gripping story of a boyhood friendship destroyed by jealousy, fear, and the kind of ruthless evil that transcends mere politics. In my opinion the Kite Runner is a passionate and powerful story, a ...

Paramount and “The Kite Runner”– One Manifestation of Goodness in the Spiri
2007-11-04 14:03:00
by Andrew Bard Schmookler Starting in late September, I began writing about “The Spirit(s) of Our Times.” In each instance, the emphasis was on the dark side of that spiritual picture. And it is indeed important –especially in times like ours– to become aware of how evil and destructive spirits operate in the world and how they manifest themselves in our cultural system. It is also important, however, to understand the workings of the forces of goodness. America has darkened, but the spirits of our times include good ones as well, shaping the course of events in constructive ways. Here’s one small piece of the American picture where, as I see it, one can discern some of those benign workings. Paramount Pictures has made a film of the renown based on “The Kite Runner,” the recent novel about Afghanistan in our times. The release of that film has now been delayed, it has been widely reported, because it has become clear that because of some scenes of the film –appare...

Last night I finished The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This was one of the books on my Armchair Traveler Reading Challenge List.So did I like it? Yes...I will have to be honest though, it wasn't the best book that I've ever read. It was a bestseller and a lot of people do love it though! lol!! Would I recommend it? Yes...because I learned a lot about Afghanistan. Here are two of the things that were new to me!Hazara: an ethnic group who reside mainly in the central region of Afghanistan. Their physical attributes have led some to believe that they have Mongolian origins. You'll have to do your own research on that...there's lots of differing viewpoints and honestly, they are all above me! lol!! In one part of the book, Hosseini describes the character of Hassan as being "a boy with a Chinese doll face..."(pg. 25). I never knew that about the Hazaras and I found that fascinating. I just love all the different "looks" God has given us! I think this girl is just b...
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

I just finished this book a few minutes ago and I have to say it’s the best book I’ve read in a really long time. There were many times I just had to put it down and cry. Sad tears and happy tears any kind of tears you can cry I cried them. What’s crazy is that I avoided reading it for a really long time even though it was constantly being recommended to me everywhere I went. I would see it on the shelf at the library, pick it up and then put it right back down. To be honest with you, I had no desire to read a book about war torn Afghanistan. I’m so glad I gave this book a chance and if you haven’t read it then do yourself a favor….read The Kite Runner! Here’s the text from Amazon.com. In his debut novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini accomplishes what very few contemporary novelists are able to do.
