The Library Corner - Volume 1
2008-05-27 01:57:00
Some new releases that deserve a place on the bookshelf….Effective Executive Compensation (Michael Dennis Graham, Thomas Roth and Dawn Dugan)Kudos to the authors for penning a very readable book dealing with a topic that’s traditionally been drier than a cheap box of cabernet sauvignon. Virtually no area of executive compensation is left untouched. Case studies are included – and more interestingly – they detail a number of executive compensation practices that increasingly are being frowned upon, or sure to invite shareholder discord at the annual meeting.Strategic Staffing (Thomas P. Bechet) This volume volume presents unparalleled insights into the world of strategic staffing. While geared more for the practitioner in a large enterprise, anyone who wades through this second edition will come away with some new techniques for more strongly linking staffing to business imperatives and direction.  Purchasers of the book gain access to onl...

The Library Isn?t Free When You Pay $17 In Fees
2008-05-08 06:16:00
Just got back from getting another round of books for The Pebble, but I had to pay $16.95 in back fines/fees just to checkout. Being a couple days late when you have 2-3 books out isn’t too bad, but ever since The Pebble hit reading age we have been getting out 10 books ...
Don't Ignore the Library
2008-04-17 10:29:00
In light of National Library week this week (the 13th to the 19th of April), I thought I'd remind everyone what a valuable tool the library is for language learners. One of the most basic tools for learning a language is the library. Perhaps it's so obvious that a lot of people ignore it--or some people like to own books and look down on borrowing. Let's face it, libraries aren't exactly cool

Supper At The Library
2008-01-21 23:00:00
Stopped off at the Traveler Food and Books last week. Books, books everywhere, and all free for the taking. This Connecticut restaurant is a 1970s retro vibe, minus the bowling alley and disco ball. Food’s decent but leans into the fried spectrum. They do earn points for offering sweet potato fries (McDonald's, listen up!). I could eat my weight in sweet potato fries. In this library you get to talk real loud, lackadaisically spill cranberry juice or beer, and “steal” books. If you’re interested you can read more about Traveler Food and Books at Noumenon. No books were harmed in the making of this post.©2007 P.L. Frederick. All rights reserved worldwide.
I Went to the Library Last Saturday
2008-01-15 07:00:00
Saturday, I went to the library (this image above is of the bricked walkway to the downtown, Fort Worth library that I have for sale on a stock photography web site). It's no big deal. I go when I can. But, I was in a hurry on that day. Normally, I walk/move pretty fast anyway, but I was bookin' it!  Comments(0) -;     -Post Comment    -  Email to friend

Friends of the Library Sale
2007-10-02 05:40:00
I have not been to a Friends of the Library sale since I was in my twenties. Well, this past weekend I went to the Friends of the Seattle Public Library sale and made out like a bandit. I bought tons of children's books. I couldn't believe that people were overlooking all those beautiful books illustrated by my favorite children's book illustrator Kadir Nelson. I also bought a book of Donald

At the Library Again...
2007-09-05 03:19:00
If you are looking for me you'll have to come to the local public library. Go through the front doors, turn to your right and go to the back where the magazines are. Now look to your right. See the little rooms with glass doors that say "QUIET AREA"? I'm in there. Electricity, a desk and I can't hear all the hullabaloo from the rest of the library. NO signal at our house today. None.
Burning the Library
2007-08-19 14:00:00
Magnus Hirschfeld never set out to be a pioneer. Born in the 19th century Prussian city of Kolberg (now part of Poland) as the son of a prominent Jewish physician, it seemed only natural that he would follow in his father's footsteps .   After taking his doctoral degree in 1892, he maintained a practice as a general practitioner and naturopath as well as being an avid writer. His writings focused on diverse aspects of human sexuality and he had ample material from his own private life to draw from. While he tended to view his own sexual orientation as a "private mater", it is now accepted that he was a homosexual and a transvestite (and possibly even a foot fetishist). Rather than pursue the closeted lifestyle that most German homosexuals of his time pursued (under the German Penal code, homosexuality had been a criminal offense since 1871), he wrote a series of works proposing that homosexuality represented an "intermediate sex" (he also coined the ...
