The Long Tail in Blogging Worked
2008-05-04 01:37:00 Are gas prices effecting your business ? I wrote a post the other day on my Ann Arbor Real Estate Talk blog. That was the question I asked ? The Ann Arbor News picked up the post and called me for an interview. They are doing a piece tomorrow, Sunday on how gas prices are effecting different industries in the Ann Arbor Area. So speaking of that long tail.......................She- asked me if she could put in my blog link?Of course, I was thrilled. Hopefully it will drive me more traffic. The point is it was the long tail that got me found. The long tail made the phone ring, and the long tail will send more people to my blog on Sunday. ( I hope ) If you want to watch a cool video on using the long tail in your search, click on the link. It is produced by the Internet Marketing Dictionary. Here is the post, that got me an interview, nothing special. Cheap- Gas or not in Washtenaw County If you are a Realtor like myself, or in any profession, you ...
Wake up, real estate bloggers, there is no money in the long tail of search
2008-04-16 17:36:00 I recently had the pleasure of sitting on the panel at RETech and a question about chasing the long tail of search traffic was asked. It greatly surprised me because chasing the long tail of search traffic has been mostly discredited as a viable means of building transactional readership in the niche blogosphere for the past year. Since it seems that the RE Net is slightly behind the eight ball here- lets see if I cant lay out the various arguments for why the long tail should not be targeted and instead should just be a bonus result of chasing the short tail. Read also: The myth of the long tail and the true value of blogging What is the long tail theory? Back in 2004 when Chris Anderson came up with the long tail. He theorized that the future of business is to sell less of more. Collectively, things that are in rather low demand can amount to quite large volumes. So, in the case of Amazon, they would on any given day sell more of all other books combined than th...

What is The Long Tail and how does it work?
2007-12-07 00:00:00 The Long Tail was first coined by Chris Anderson in an October 2004 Wired magazine article. It was used to to describe a certain type of online business and economic models -- such as those found at Amazon.com. The term is now widely used throughout the internet, often using different names such as heavy tails, power-law tails, or Pareto tails. The Long Tail and internet keywords Search Engine Optimizers (also known as SEO's) regularly use The Long Tail when it comes to selecting the keywords and search phrases they want to target. This allows optimizers to target keywords that are considered less competitive. By doing so they are able to rise to the top of the search listings easier and attract more targeted traffic from search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Ninemsn. How does this work in the real world? Easy Skips is a client of Adamant Solutions - we designed their website and then targeted the appropriate keywords at no additional cost (It is worth noting that man...
There's No Money In The Long Tail of the Blogosphere
2007-11-28 18:53:00 Nice post from ReadWriteWebWritten by Alex Iskold / November 28, 2007 / 42 comments In 2004 Chris Anderson wrote an influential book called The Long Tail. In it, he argued that the future of business is to sell less of more. The main premise is that collectively, things that are in rather low demand can amount to quite large volumes. This is because there is a large number of people who belong to the long tail and they encompass a wide rage of tastes. A classic example of successful long tail sales is Amazon. A substantial subset of the book sales for the largest online retailer comes from obscure books. Amazon itself could afford to stock up on rare books as well as offer these via numerous online partners. The net effect is that a lot of book sales occured in the long tail. This phenomenon is captured nicely in a quote from an Amazon employee: "We sold more books today that didn't sell at all yesterday than we sold today o...

The Long Tail of Real Estate Bloggers
2007-10-03 00:27:00 I had an interesting discussion yesterday about whether blogging will go mainstream and become a real estate marketing medium as ubiquitous tomorrow as agent websites are today. Remember in 1999 when having an agent website, or even an email address, was considered leading edge? After all, a blog is nothing more than an enhanced agent website. We discussed how Active Rain "owns" the blogger community. If indeed blogging becomes "de rigueur" or status quo, then owning the blogger community will eventually encompass owning the most influential voices of the real estate professional community. Why? There's a long tail of smallish cities and towns all across America that still don't have blogging agents. As they come on board (and you see the half hearted blogging attempts of agents in some of these towns on Active Rain), they will understand the community aspects of blogging (as bloggers already understand) and become integrated into the close-knit "blogosphere". You see the evidenc...

SEO: Search Engine Optimization Secrets of The Long Tail
2007-08-07 05:53:00 Now that I've gotten my blogging goals together I need to prepare for what cometh through the long tail. This is so that I can achieve my minimum threshold of traffic. For those who don't know, your minimum threshold of traffic is what you need in order to blog full time and quit your day job. For example: If you know that 1000 unique visitors produces $10.00 of income, and you also know that you need to make a financial bridge of $80 a day to quit your day job, then the minimum threshold of traffic you need per day is 8000 unique visitors. 1000 unique visitors = $10 of income $80 / $10 X 1000 = 8000 unique visitors This would also mean that every visitor coming to your blog helps you produce $0.01 of income. Yes, a penny of income each. That is quite low considering that those people purchasing Google Adwords and the such pay usually pay upwards of $0.30 per click. Building The Long Tail of Traffic When you first start a blog any traffic is good traffic ...

can you get money out of the long tail?
2007-05-21 05:42:00 Techcrunch has a post about a new online media company Next New Networks that plans create new “micro networks”. However, it appears that many of its channels appear to fall into fairly macro topic areas-There’s an indy film channel that will find itself going head to head with Sundance and IFCA couple of auto channels that will be up against, every newspaper in the country, Autoblog, The Speed Channel and DiscoveryTo quote Techcrunch-“The content is niche targeted so it’s not going to appeal to everyone.”That’s exactly the same proposition as all of Next New Networks competitors. The problem is although the “Long Tail” is all about lots of quality niche opportunities, advertisers and their agencies, can’t with the odd exception, get beyond the idea that quantity is the only thing that matters. That’s the problem for all these new niche media opportunities; it’s easy to find the niches, monetizing them is the tr...

The Long Tail & TV Advertising.
The Long Tail is a great idea and a potential source of a lot of lovely revenue, but it has some very crucial flaws which are currently preventing it from becoming a new model for content providers. It’s the most basic ...
The Long Tail of IT Spend
2007-02-16 12:17:00 'The Long Tail' is a 'power law of distribution' used by statisticians to define a expanding market (in any given discipline that is) in terms of the economic and business model of the market. In fact the phrase 'The Long Tail' was coined by Chris Anderson (editor-in-chief) of wired magazine. In simple terms the long tail can be explained with a graph as follows:This graph compares the total average IT spending of organizations of differing organizational sizes. Notice that the graph has a 'Big Head' with high amplitude but is immediately followed by 'The Long Tail' of lower amplitude (or spending) organizations. Though this graph is not 'explicit' in denoting that given the universe of discourse of all organizations which spends on IT, The top IT spending organizations ('The Big Head' of the curve) will still fall short of the collective 'volume' of IT spend that occurs on The Long Tail. This is seemingly true because the 'number' of organizations with a high IT s...

The Long Tail of Venture Capital: the Deal Flow Learning Curve
2007-01-28 23:02:00 In 1999, working as an analyst for an Internet filtering company, we saw the Long Tail early on. With the top 300 sites comprising 50% of total page views and the top 1500 garnering two-thirds, little did we know at the time that our graphical representations of content and total number of hosts held the secret for Amazon’s, Ebay’s and iTunes’ future sales successes – the economic theory of The Long Tail for multimedia retailers and entertainment. The idea stems from supply-side economic theory, where retailers have to rely on limited shelf space and stocking of popular items (hits) in order to maximize their revenue, thus you have supply and demand setting the price – the economics of scarcity. This fact still holds true for the Wallmarts of today. However, the idea of the Long Tail suggests that if you can make every product available to your customer (an economy of abundance) and get it to them easily while not even maintaining an inventory, then popular item #10...

The Long Tail of Patents
2006-09-14 20:42:03 Chris Anderson is the author of the wildly popular book The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business Is Selling Less of More. The Long Tail refers to the shape of the long, downward-sloping curve which graphs the number of different types of products available, against the demand for those products. Bricks and mortar companies only have a limited amount of shelf space. These companies, therefore,

Measuring the Success of an SEO Campaign: The Long Tail
1970-01-01 00:59:00 Search engine optimisation is not an exact science, but it is a form of marketing and thus needs to be measured in its performance to monitor whether it is working. We have mentioned before that the ongoing process is one of our key differences from other SEO companies. However, I want to explore here one of the particular metrics that we use to evaluate a campaign. If you have ever spoken to us, you will know that we use a relatively small list of terms to optimise a website, and these are the key terms that you and we have jointly highlighted are the ones that are most relevant to your site. Unlike a PPC campaign, it is not necessary to specifically target every possible minor phrase, "the long tail", in order to appear for that search. Increased trust and authority What an organic search campaign does for you, besides targeting your benchmark keywords, is improve the authority of your website and its general reputation with the search engines. It increases the tru...

Looking to the long tail when seeking topics for your blog
1970-01-01 00:59:00 Many companies are now regularly writing a blog, and Joe talked yesterday about the SEO Benefits of a Company Blog. Once you have that blog, you have to decide what you want to write that blog about. Are you ever stuck for ideas on what to write? At times it seems that there are a never ending amount of topics to choose from, sometimes there can be lots going on in your industry, whilst at other times it can seem that there is nothing new to write about without just rehashing what everyone else might be talking about. One source of ideas for blog topics can be to look at the "long tail" phrases that you perhaps do not rank as prominently as you would like for. You can do some keyword research for this, in the same way as you might when deciding phrases to target with organic search, to ensure that you are targeting something that people might be looking for. This may not work for competitive phrases however, as these are difficult to establish rankings for, but spec... |
