It?s nuclear power, not oil, that worries the Middle East
2008-05-23 06:24:00 The West might be alarmed at the prospect of the mullahs arming themselves with nuclear weapons, but it is the Arabs who are first in their direct line of fire. Relations between Tehran and the Saudis have been strained ever since Iran’s Revolutionary Guards were implicated in the 1996 bombing of the US Marine base in ...

Terrorism is historically normal mode of war. Israel must respect terrorists as efficient warriors - and kill them. Nuclear terrorism is unavoidable, and it will hit America before Israel. The Harsh Reality of the Middle East Conflict
2008-05-03 11:22:00 by Dan Lieberman A century old conflict between the state of Israel and stateless Palestinians, many of whom have been disposed from lands that created the Israel state, has provoked an argument: Is it preferable to have two states living side by side or have one state from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River that includes Jews and Palestinians without prejudice and with equal rights for all? Those who propose a single-state do so because they sense the two-state solution is nonviable and those who propose two-states do so because they sense the one-state solution is unacceptable. The argument is doomed to irresolution because Israel has overwhelming military power, faces no countervailing power, doesnt intend for the Palestinians to have a viable state and wont approve a single state for all. If Israel intended to allow a viable Palestinian state, would the Israeli government proceed in the continuous construction of West Bank settlements? W...

Can the U.S. and Iran Share the Middle East?
2008-04-25 09:08:00 by Trita Parsi By negotiating a Shiite truce, Tehran embarrassed Washington last week and arguably proved itself to be a more potent stabiliser of southern Iraq. Iran's role in Iraq came as a sharp reminder that the George W. Bush administration's accusations of Iranian mischief notwithstanding, Iranian influence in Iraq is both undeniable and multifaceted. As Washington starts to come to terms with this reality, the Middle East inches closer to its moment of truth: Is the United States ready to share the region with Iran? As the risk of a U.S.-Iran war is deemed to have dropped in the past few months, in spite of the resignation of Admiral William Fallon and President Bush's designation of Iran as the United States' number one threat, a modicum of optimism for U.S.-Iran relations in 2009 has emerged. The poisonous atmosphere between the Bush and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad administrations has prevented the two countries from exploring areas of common interest. ...
A Mystery in the Middle East
2008-04-09 04:29:00 The Arab-Israeli region of the Middle East is filled with rumors of war. That is about as unusual as the rising of the sun, so normally it would not be worth mentioning. But like the proverbial broken clock that is right twice a day, such rumors occasionally will be true. In this case, we don’t know that they are true, and certainly it’s not the rumors that are driving us. But other things — minor and readily explicable individually — have drawn our attention to the possibility that something is happening. The first thing that drew our attention was a minor, routine matter. Back in February, the United States started purchasing oil for its Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). The SPR is a reserve of crude oil stored in underground salt domes. Back in February, it stood at 96.2 percent of capacity, which is pretty full as far as we are concerned. But the U.S. Department of Energy decided to increase its capacity. This move came in spite of record-high oil prices and the fact th...

03.22.08 Tilly and The Wall at the Middle East
2008-03-23 18:54:00 The scene was set. A sold out show the night before Easter in the basement of the Cambridge, MA mainstay. The room was filled to the brim with girls in tube tops and spandex and boys in button down shirts and khakis. From the very first notes of the opening band it was apparent that this crowd was not into shoe gazing, they had attended this show to dance.Though when you hear Tilly and the Wall on CD, you might not think of them as being a "dance" band. But there is something about seeing them on stage that changes all of that.Five kids from Nebraska never seemed to have so much fun in one place at one time as Tilly and the Wall does. When on stage its like watching five best friends have the most fun time ever. Guitarist/vocalist Derek Pressnall hops around the stage like a hyper bunny, which is very fitting for Easter eve. While his wife Jamie Pressnall provides the beat for the band, tap dancing on her miked raised platform. The dueling female vocalists Kianna Alarid and Neel...

"Peace in the Middle East -- An impossibility," quoth Moshe Sharon
2008-02-10 21:18:00 Professor Moshe Sharon has clearly asserted the impossibility of peace in the Middle East. I would amend this to say that under present and foreseeable circumstances peace between the Arabs and Israel is impossible. As Sharon points out the main obstacle to peace is the Arab-Muslim attitude toward non-believers, especially the Jews whom they have oppressed as dhimmis for more than a thousand years. Their religion commands the Arabs/Muslims to make perpetual war against non-Muslim states --with truces allowed when this is for the ultimate benefit of the Muslim war machine, to give it time to rearm and regroup-- until the whole world is brought under the rule of Islam. The name that Muslims give to war for conquering the lands of non-believers [kuffar] is jihad. When non-believers are overwhelmingly militarily superior to the Muslims and are perceived by the Muslims as willing and able and ready to use that military superiority against them, then the Muslims can be very peaceful.Sharo...

Sad but True - -<-@ The Middle East
2008-02-07 22:40:00 Sad but True Last month, a world-wide survey was conducted by the UN. The only question asked was: 'Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?' The survey was a huge failure because: In Africa they didn't know what 'food' means. In Eastern Europe they didn't know what 'honest' means. In Western Europe they didn't know what 'shortage' means. In China they didn't know what 'opinion' means. In the Middle East they didn't know what 'solution' means. In South America they didn't know what 'please' means. In the USA they didn't know what 'the rest of the world' means.
For the middle east’s access woes, bad things come in 4’s
2008-02-04 15:42:00 For a fourth time in a week, communications with the middle east have been disrupted by a damaged undersea fiber bundle. No ships to blame this time and there was enough redundancy via alternate routes to avoid a a blackout. Internet services in Qatar have been seriously disrupted because of damage to an undersea telecoms cable linking the Gulf state to the UAE, the fourth such incident in less than a week. Qatar Telecom (Qtel) said on Sunday the cable was damaged between the Qatari island of Haloul and the UAE island of Das on Friday. The cause of damage is not yet known, but ArabianBusiness.com has been told unofficially the problem is related to the power system and not the result of a ship’s anchor cutting the cable, as is thought to be the case in the other three incidents. Remaking the Middle East: The New Cold War
2008-01-18 19:26:00 The Neocon dream is for the US to dominate the word. Dubya has damaged beyond repair attempts to influence Central Asia and the Middle East by persuasion and supporting human dignity. Zbigniew Brzezinski advocated such an approach. In his book The Grand Chessboard he explains the foreign policy imperative of first Great Britain, and now the United States to dominate the work through control of Eurasia. Ever since the continents started interacting politically, some five hundred years ago, Eurasia has been the center of world power.- (p. xiii) ... But in the meantime, it is imperative that no Eurasian challenger emerges, capable of dominating Eurasia and thus of also challenging America. The formulation of a comprehensive and integrated Eurasian geostrategy is therefore the purpose of this book. (p. xiv) In that context, how America 'manages' Eurasia is critical. A power that dominates Eurasia would control two of the world's three most advanced and economically productive region...

Euro Puppy Establishes Itself in the Middle East!
2007-12-17 14:50:00 The Middle East conjures up images of spices, mysterious spirituality, vibrant colors and heat waves. Well at Euro Puppy; things have been heating up quite rapidly! In the United Arab Emirates, luxury is norm, and one would think that puppies and dogs are not in the least bit important. What a misconception! The majority of the population is of expatriate origin, and thus it is not surprising that the United Arab Emirates is a gateway for puppy love! Forget the spices, the vibrant colors and the heat wavesfor now. Middle Eastern countries, like Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, and Oman are showing an increased need for canine companionship, it seems. Hardly any facilities are present that offer high quality puppies for the expatriate community. Euro Puppy has been proud of the fact that so many excited dog-lovers from the UAE have contacted us. We offer only the highest quality puppies and dogs to satisfied customers. The Middle East has been virgin territory, and although Gucci, Ve...
Arms or education in the Middle East?
2007-12-11 01:06:00 I am a big fan of Mahmood Al-Yousif. If you want a view from the Gulf that challenges prejudice and gives you an indication of what exactly it feels like to be an Arab across a narrow strip of water from Iran, he is hard to beat. In this post he has just been to see an economist give a talk:“Why is it that in this region of the world we are faced with a major conflict whenever there is an appreciable hike in the price of oil?”He went on to list the first Gulf War (Iran/Iraq) which was heavily financed by the Gulf’s monarchies; the second Gulf War which was the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq, the third and on-going one is the Iraqi occupation by the USA and he suggests that the war clouds are already gathering rather heavily for a fourth conflict evidenced by the saber rattling by the USA against Iran. These conflicts, he suggests, are nothing more than “correcting” the US deficit against the increase in its oil import bill. How that correction is made is by the US selling arms ...

Reviving the cold war in the Middle East?
2007-12-03 00:29:00 Focusing on the Middle East, it is quite possible to argue that Russian activities in the region since 2005 have been a significant cause of US-Russian tensions. Beginning in 2005, Russia has made a major effort to increase its influence in the region. This is in part a counterweight to NATO’s expansion eastward and in ...

Britain wanted to use Arabs to protect its interests in the Middle East
2007-11-28 13:52:00 The French scholar of the Middle East, Pierre Rondot, asserts that Britain wanted to use the Arabs to protect British Middle Eastern interests. It is noteworthy that Rondot was a strong sympathizer of the Arabs against Israel and Zionism, yet, being French, he did not have a motive to cover up British policies and motives.Great Britain, for reasons both of fact and sentiment, continues to be with the Arab nation; its favor in 1917 towards Zionism, its resignation to the arrangements of 1920 [at the San Remo Conference?] do not allow it to forget its essential design, which is to entrust the care of its transit interests in the Near East to an alliance with the Arabs; it also emancipated, as soon as it could, Transjordan (treaty of 1928) and Iraq (treaty of 1930); it also ended up during the second world conflict [WW2], as the patron if not the inventor of the 'Arab League,' evolving in the first days of peace [after WW2] towards the even more concrete projects of 'Greater Syria...
