Barry Bonds is sitting by the phone in Beverly Hills waiting for the call that even he by now must know will never come. Roger Clemens is similarly idle, hoping that his next call doesn’t come from someone at the federal courthouse. Jose Guillen is probably wishing he had been suspended 15 days to ...
MLB Fumbles Acting on the Mitchell Report: PED Users Get Away With Cheating
2008-04-11 22:38:00
The Los Angeles Times just reported that “Baseball owners and players agreed today on a revised drug program that grants amnesty to all players cited in the Mitchell Report as users of performance-enhancing substances.” Honestly, I’m flabbergasted. From a statement by Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, “It is time for the game to move forward. ...
Rogues, scandals and the Church of Baseball: S&R honors Babe Ruth
2008-03-31 19:30:00
Walt Whitman once said, “I see great things in baseball. It’s our game, the American game. It will repair our losses and be a blessing to us.” You could look it up. - Annie Savoy I’ll promise to go easier on drinking and to get to bed earlier, but not for you, fifty thousand dollars, or two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars will I give up women. They’re too much fun. - Babe Ruth Today is Opening Day for America’s Pastime, and to mark the occasion S&R honors our newest Scrogue, George Herman Ruth. The Bambino. The Sultan of Swat. The Babe. What Ruth lacked as a scholar he more than made up for in roguishness, and his appointment to our masthead comes at a time when our game is facing its own set of troubles. The Mitchell Report is a desperately flawed effort, but BALCO, the Federal pursuit of Barry Bonds, admissions of cheating by Andy Pettite and others, the now-discredited denial of cheating by Rafael Palmeiro, the strange case of Mike McGw...

The Baltimore Orioles Issue A Statement On The Mitchell Report; Orioles Run
2007-12-16 18:25:00
In light of the events of the Mitchell Report, the Baltimore Orioles have issued a statement:"There is no place in baseball or in any other sport for the use of performance-enhancing substances. The Orioles support Major League Baseball's efforts to institute the most comprehensive testing program of any professional sport and one that strives to eliminate the use of performance enhancing drugs from all of baseball. As to the information and allegations contained in the Mitchell Report, the Orioles caution observers to resist the temptation to accept collective judgments based upon unsubstantiated allegations. The Orioles further believe that each Major League player must be treated on an individual basis, must not be judged responsible by mere association, and is innocent of any improper conduct until proven otherwise beyond a reasonable doubt."Well, as we all know, the organization has been hit real not only with the allegations of the past week, but also in the past. Perception is Reality: Baseball's Drug Problem and the Mitchell Report; Seg
2007-12-15 16:46:00
As the Mitchell Report was released this week, the nation's reaction has ranged from apathy to downright anger. Right now, much has not been heard from the Baltimore Orioles or any of their players at all regarding the report itself despite the consistent cloud around the team for years. The more I read of it, the reputations of players, who may have not have done anything are ruined off some evidence are ruined forever and it is based on a lot of innuendo, hearsay and the words of two trainers, Jason Giambi and Frank Thomas. Many players had the chance to speak, but they didn't. That's the problem.Whether or not we like it, drugs are in very sport and there's no way to stop it. Honestly, will all the travel in sports, time zone changes, and everything else - do you really think guys are playing without help? The sad thing is that we try to stop drug use amongst teenagers and young adults, but seeing the money in sports and also the lack of punishment -- why would anyone not want t...

What Major League Baseball & Players Need To Do With The Mitchell Report
2007-12-14 15:53:00
Yesterday, the Mitchell Report shocked the sports world and America. The story about drug use in baseball was item A on all the newscasts, and ESPN devoted the vast majority of their programming on Thursday to coverage of the ground breaking event.Rather than go into some long winded essay, this what I feel players and Major League Baseabll must do.Unless players start speaking the truth, stop hiding behind the union, or towing the company line, baseball will never move on and we?ll never find the answers we so-called want. The sick thing is though the so-called rats have been proven right. In cases like these, sadly, burden of proof does not matter so much; alas, the problem is that perception is reality and if your name appears in the report, you might as well consider yourself guilty until proven innocent. We, as some of the savvier fans may know that some players may indeed be innocent of the charges the report alleged, but some will paint anyone in the report, whether they had a...
FIT TO BE TARNISHED: THE MITCHELL REPORT
2007-12-14 12:04:00
Well, Senator George Mitchell submitted his report on steroid and HGH abuse among major league baseball players, and the list of retired AND active players is an extensive one. That list is highlighted by Barry Bonds, of course, and teammates, training partners and Yankee players Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens. Maybe now we know the secret of his longevity. Maybe we don't. I was listening to WFAN, the leading sports radio station in the New York City area, and a couple commenters, not terribly bright ones, questioned why there were so many Yankee and Mets players and former players on the list, and the idiot talk show host and some of the callers said that Mitchell has always been anti-Yankees and anti-Mets. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is from a great Friday column by Hartford Courant sportswriter Jeff Jacobs, my favorite sports scribe. The entire article is available when you click on the title, but read on..."Without former Yankees strength coach Brian McNamee a...

If you?re interested, you can download the entire Mitchell Report here.If you?re from New England, you?re probably buried under a foot of snow right now. Some of us never actually made it home from work as Route 1 was?.to put it nicely?a complete disaster. Yet no matter how bad of an afternoon you had, it can?t compare to the afternoon the Yankees just had.Two of their best players surfaced in the Mitchell Report. Two marquee players from their last championship team. Sure, they?re denying it. But it doesn?t matter. This isn?t Jose Canseco throwing out names here. This is a former US Senator. A man who was offered a nomination to the US Supreme Court. A man who went to Northern Ireland and brokered a peace deal. A man who is universally respected inside and outside of baseball.Ouch! It'll be interesting to see how Hank Steinbrenner (my new favorite baseball owner) responds. Some quick thoughts on the names that surfaced today (for the entire list, click here)?Roger ClemensIt?ll be in...

2007-12-13 20:39:00
In what is a continuation of a dark cloud over the Orioles organization, the names of Brian Roberts, former team members, Miguel Tejada & several others have appeared in the Mitchell Report.Right now, Roberts is still on the Orioles, but rumored to possibly be dealt; Tejada was traded to Houston yesterday. Former Sen. George Mitchell's report on steroid use in baseball released today mentions at least 16 current and former Orioles including second baseman Brian Roberts and recently traded shortstop Miguel Tejada. The others named are: current outfielder Jay Gibbons, who recently admitted using human growth hormone and accepted a 15-day suspension, and ex-Orioles Rafael Palmeiro, Larry Bigbie, David Segui, Jack Cust, Jason Grimsley, Jerry Hairston, Tim Laker, Gregg Zaun, Kevin Brown, Howie Clark, Todd Williams, Kent Mercker and Gary Matthews Jr.Well, for most hardcore fans of the team, most of the names are those that have been heard in the media before. The Mitchell Report - Thoughts
2007-12-13 20:21:00
Well, the Mitchell Report has come out and when I was at a Holiday luncheon, my Blackberry was ringing with incoming emails and text messages about the news that was leaked before Senator Mitchell gave his press conference.Let's say, I was not surprised.I follow baseball closely, as you all know, perhaps much too closely for my own good at times; however, for most hardcore and savvier fans, the names that have been released so far are ones we have heard once before in reports, on the news, or amongst overselves.Roger Clemens, Miguel Tejada and Andy Pettitte were named in the long-awaited Mitchell Report on Thursday, an All-Star roster linked to steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs that put a question mark -- if not an asterisk -- next to some of baseball's biggest moments... Several stars named in the report could pay the price in Cooperstown, much the way Mark McGwire was kept out of the Hall of Fame this year merely because of steroids suspicion.Besides Clemens and Pet...
The Mitchell Report

1:06pm: Jon Heyman names a slew of guys in the report.  The Mitchell Report itself is available here.  Start reading!  Wow, this thing is loaded with surprises.  Kind of cool to see the emails Mitchell was able to collect among front office guys. 11:11am: More on last night's cut n' paste misspelled list - WNBC talked to a "high-ranking MLB official" who refuted several names on it. 10:51am: This is odd, WNBC/CNBC is rolling with the same cut n' pasted misspelled list.  Hey look, Troy Glaus is in there twice!  MetsBlog checks in with buzz that the Klapisch note about the Mets being safe may not be true. 10:25am: A list with a bunch of fairly believable names (many of them misspelled) in the form of one big paragraph has been passed around the Internet since at least last night.  There's no indication it has any legitimacy (no need to email it to me).  Deadspin has published said list. 10:04am: The New York Daily News is also sayi...
Paul Lo Duca Implicated In the Mitchell Report
2007-12-13 19:57:00
On ESPN this afternoon former Met Paul Lo Duca has just been revealed as using steroids based on findings from the Mitchell Report released by Major League Baseball today.Perhaps that's why a little love was lost between the Mets management and Lo Duca. Maybe someone found out something and decided they didn't want that tied to the ballclub.I liked Paul Lo Duca and it's unfortunate that he's being implicated in this. Although it does make me feel a little better about our current catching situation.More details to come.
The Mitchell Report - An Unenforceable, Misguided 500 page paperweight
2007-12-13 18:12:00
That's right, the Mitchell report is bunk. But it names names. People will like that. But let's summarize what it accomplishes: 1) Names a few dozen players and fingers them as cheaters with evidence. The court of public opinion will now make these folks the face of cheating in MLB 2) Focuses on a

The Mitchell Report Expected To Be Released This Afternoon...
2007-12-13 15:10:00
Well, the long awaited Mitchell Report will be out today, which is expected to be nothing short of a bombshell, but also looks to be a fair and balanced look at the drug issue in baseball.According various media outlets, the report is expected to be sharply critical of both Major League Baseball and the players? union for turning a blind eye to the proliferation of steroids in baseball.Despite what many have thought, Mitchell's findings are seen to be harsh towards Major League Baseball and will name anywhere from 60 to 80 players. In addition, the report is allegedly expected to report deep problems within the culture of Major League Baseball. From the Baltimore Examiner: One source said that while the report will cite problems "top to bottom," it also will expose "deep problems, the number of players, high-level MVPs and All-Stars," as well as clubhouse personnel who allowed steroids and other banned substances in clubhouses or knew about it and didn't say anything. The rest of th...
The Mitchell Report Is Coming
2007-12-13 12:00:00
The big story of today will undoubtedly be the Mitchell Report this afternoon.  Dozens of current and former players are expected to be named, and they won't all be scrubs. As you know, the focus of MLBTR is trades and free agent signings, hot stove stuff.  I don't consider steroid rumors a big part of it.  So I'll probably cover a little of it, focusing how the current hot stove landscape may be altered. I did receive one tip on this topic - my guy says the Yankees are in for a bad day (but Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera are not in the report). showad();

The Mitchell Report Is Allegedly In The Hands of Major League Baseball...
2007-12-12 00:10:00
It looks like business is about to pick up -- real soon. According to the New York Daily News, Major League Baseball has the Mitchell Report...Major League Baseball officials are reviewing George Mitchell's long-anticipated steroid report at the former Senate majority leader's law offices, 21 months after commissioner Bud Selig asked Mitchell to investigate the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball.Officials arrived at Mitchell's Manhattan office Tuesday, according to sources familiar with the investigation who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the topic, and began what is believed to be a 48-hour review period before Mitchell releases the report on Thursday. The report is believed to contain the names of 60-80 former and current players, according to sources, and is based in large part on information provided to Mitchell by former clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski."We cannot comment on anything," MLB spokesman Rich Levin said.MLB officials were re...
The Mitchell Report Out Next Thursday!!!
2007-12-08 01:08:00
Well, folks it looks like the long-awaited Mitchell report is coming out next week! From Boston.comIt's the findings of former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell's 20-month investigation into performance-enhancing drugs, a modern-day Black Sox scandal that has tarnished many of the game's greatest stars and records.Although some are sure to claim it's one-sided and outdated, it has given players and executives cause for pause."Well, it ain't Merry Christmas or Happy New Year for somebody," Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker said. And this is where a conflict of interest takes place...But he also is a director with the World Series champion Red Sox, a role players say makes him hopelessly conflicted and an agent of Selig, who appointed him. Players also claim Mitchell refused to show those accused the evidence against them, denying them a chance to refute the allegations.Let's say someone from the Red Sox appears on his report, what happens?I would venture to know why Georg...
Naming Names: Whether the Mitchell Report Will Have Teeth
2007-10-13 19:01:00
Buster Olney of ESPN broke the story yesterday saying that the former Senator George Mitchell?s report on performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball would be released sometime after the World Series and before the end of the year. At the time that is released it will reportedly be a ?huge story.? According to Olney?s sources, a conference call with Tom Carlucci, a lawyer hired to liaison between the Mitchell investigation and the teams, took place with representatives from all the clubs. As reported by Onley: Said one source familiar with what was said on the conference call, “This is going to be enormous … it’s going to be a huge story when these names come out.” While the names that come out might be huge, where the names come from might make proving whether players did, or did not purchase or use PEDs another matter. Certainly, Troy Glaus, Jay Gibbons, or Scott Schoeneweis could be mentioned in the report. One of these three players is said to ha...
