Case in point, this week’s talking point ...

Last night, Brian Burres in his return the the majors after a brief demotion to Norfolk, looked like well, um -- the same Brian Burres.Meanwhile, his counterpart, Gavin Floyd, well, looked like he belonged in the majors. Floyd, who nearly no-hit the Orioles earlier this year, earned his 14th save and helped Chicago down Baltimore, 8-3, for their second straight win.The weakness of the squad -- the starting pitching -- showed why it might have to really be overhauled during the off season. After giving up a quick two-run homer to Nick Swisher, Burres' night went downhill from there. The southpaw lasted five innings, and gave up six runs -- five earned -- on ten hits. Randor Bierd pitched three innings of relief and gave up two runs, as the game was pretty much conceded by then.Nick Markakis and Luke Scott had two hits, and each drove in a run; however, not much could be said for the rest of the team.In perhaps their roughest stretch this summer, they have only one two games -- inclu...
The more things change, the more they stay the same: 2009 Mercedes-Benz G-C

The more things change, the more they stay the same: 2009 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Some things just get finer with age — wine, cheese and Mercedes' G-Class. The tank-like G-Class debuted way back in 1979, and hasn't seen much in the way of updates since then. For 2009, Mercedes will stay the course with a very lightly updated G-Class SUV. From the outside, not much on the 2009 G-Class will change. Mercedes-Benz has updated the off-roader's face with a new corporate grille, and updated wheels will help you differentiate your rig from your neighbor's lesser 2008 model. However, the G-Class will see some major revisions underhood. The Merc's 5.0L V8 will see a horsepower bump from 292 all the way up to 382 — a 90 horse improvement. Torque will also be improved from 336 lb-ft to 391. The AMG version of the G-Class will see a modest 7 horsepower increase, totaling an even 500. Despite the improvements, we're willing to bet the G-Class' best ...

the more they stay the same. Funny but true.Last night DH and I were listening to one of my over 5,000 old time radio shows, the latest being the CBS Radio Mystery Theatre series. The show was hosted by E.G. Marshall and premiered January 6, 1974, which was in fact the show we listened to last night. One of the great things about these radio shows is that I get to hear old news broadcasts and commercials. Last night's show from the 6th of January contained some great commercials for the VA Hospital (working for vets!) the Better Business Bureau (working for Americans) and Budweiser Beer. Now when's the last time you heard a beer commercial on radio? Heck that'd be about the time I remember liquor commercials on television! As we listened to the news broadcast, I shook my head and turned to DH and said "gee, nothing changes does it?"So...what was in the news on January 6, 1974?-Nixon refusing to turn over subpoenaed materials to Watergate committee-OPEC oil embargo-Nixon signs 55 mp...

The other night, after I had finished my kitchen work, and had entered all the invoices into our QuickBooks system, Chef came by to ask me if I could help him with a new layout design he was thinking about for the recipes we have in house. You see, most restaurants write down the recipes they are using in house so that if one chef is out for some reason, and more gremolata (for instance) needs to be made, then another chef can quickly take over for the absence of that item. It just makes good sense. “Dammit, the recipe for our mushroom sauce has got to be in here somewhere!” The problem at Rustico - and we all agree it is a problem - is that our “menu book” has only about 60% of the recipes in it, and the ones that are in there are placed in no discernable order, and with no consistent style/layout. Any time I want a recipe for a salad dressing, I have to scan the whole notebook, and even if I do find it, I may or may not understand what the recipe is t...

Things seem to have changed not at all between the time of E.B. White?s writing and today. Simply add I-S-L-A-M-O to ?fascism? and you too will see how similarly circumstances present themselves today. Some people will forever defend their right to freedom, while others will eternally fight to take it away. Only the names change.

The Orioles lost 12-6 out in San Diego last night.First off all, according to Roch Kubatko, the Orioles have extended an offer for Joe Girardi to manage the team based on an ESPN report. Of course, naturally, a team official denied it.The way things have been going with the Orioles and the media, the denial sort of sounds like ?Baghdad Bob? declaring the Americans were not coming in to take over Baghdad before it fell to the U.S. military and Saddam Hussein was toppled. The rumor may have a lot of truth in it. Keep in mind; this is the same team that has not officially announced that Andy MacPhail is the COO of the Orioles, even THOUGH HE flew out with the team?s high-level brass to see Girardi.Oh boy, some days I don?t know what to think anymore. ***Anyhow, Dave Trembley got to manage the Orioles last night, and sadly, the same scene repeated itself ? an Oriole loss; the ninth straight. There?s more on the game from the Baltimore Examiner, the Washington Post, and the Orioles MLB sit...

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY DON'T
2007-05-07 22:26:00
Author: pundit via Instapundit:THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY DON'T: Have you noticed yet how so many Washington politicians and bureaucrats are ignoring the last election? Voters tossed Republicans out of congressional power last November and gave it to Democrats promising to clean up the culture of corruption epitomized by anonymous earmarks, well-connected lobbyists and other influence peddlers. But the truth is nothing much really has changed and isnā??t likely to anytime soon, regardless of which party is in power. Many in the Washington establishment ? Democrats and Republicans, elected officials and career civil servants ? are determined to keep right on fleecing the American people as if the election never happened. The Democrats have all but abandoned their campaign promises. Now they hide behind a cynical veil of excuse and delay. The Senate and House approved earmark and other ethics reforms earlier this year. Yet nobody now seems intere...
