Rats Drifting Through the Music of Our Soul
2009-09-14 00:52:00 While perusing through a back-issue of Wire magazine from January 2006, I came across a fascinating article showcasing the artist-run record label Rat Drifting. Since then, I have been hard pressed to find any additional information about Rat Drifting or the artists featured on the label, short of the label's website and a few reviews scattered throughout the web. Therefore, I felt that it would be fitting to provide some more exposure to this enterprising label on Eclectic Grooves. Rat Drifting is essentially the brainchild of Eric Chenaux, the singer and guitarist who plays in several of the bands on Rat Drifting while overseeing the operations of the label along with co-founder Martin Arnold. The seeds of Rat Drifting were planted when Arnold was visiting York University to collaborate with Casey Sokol on the production of Cornelius Cardew's The Great Learning. During this time, Arnold met up with two of Sokol's students, Ryan Driver and Doug Tielli, and eventually crossed pa...

Crappy Chicago Commercials: The Music Video

FlyCasual has provided us with a somewhat unique music video in which the song, Headlights by the Helicopters, is performed through visuals of old, crappy Chicago commercials. Phantom Surfers - The Music from the Big-Screen Spectaculars [1992]
2008-12-28 20:07:00 Masked San Francisco surf 'n' instrumental revivalists the Phantom Surfers never met a gimmick they couldn't pull off with more nostalgic verisimilitude and humor. From their on-vinyl flirtations with the big-in-their-own-minds slot car racing fad to their worship of the late-'60s cult classic film Skater Dater, the Phantom Surfers walk it like they talk it. Play the Music From the Big Screen Spectaculars finds the Surfers as a quintet, with Trent "Big Drag" Ruane of Frisco garage punk pals the Mummies on guitar alongside Johnny "Big Hand" Bartlett and Mel "Frostbite" Bergman on the other two twangy, reverb-soaked guitars, plus Michael "Daddy Love" Lucas on bass and Maz "Tender Pants" Kattuah on drums. The cuts here are, as you may have guessed, culled from the soundtracks of such '60s cheez classics as Rat Pfink a Boo-Boo, Bikini Beach, and Gammera, as well as from South Pacific ("Bali Hai") and Blood Orgy of the Leather Girls, a contemporary B-movie made in the sexploitation ...

Straight Edge isn't about the Music
2008-08-25 22:09:00 So basically this post is a response to a post I found on AbsolutePunk.net about loosing faith in music. The author stated a lot reasons why he doesn't feel that music these days, and by that the bands themselves, are creating music that's worth listening to or travelling a long ways to see. I can see that, I feel that many bands changed to be like other bands, to make money (which honestly as much as that sucks, they got rich or tried and little kids cried over it cause they "sold out") or cause they changed their opinions on music. As much as I hate when a band changes and I don't like the outcome there are enough bands that I love too that changed for the better. I think AFI grew a lot and Eighteen Visions changed for the worse. Gorilla Biscuits broke edge then broke up, and eventually morphed into Civ, which is okay but isn't GB.But the one thing that struck me from this post was that the author claimed that the music changed and he lost faith in that and broke edge. I...

The Music Edition: Have I Got Some Songza For You
2008-08-06 21:09:00 I, obviously without thinking it through properly, asked my posse on Twitter to send me the titles and artists of songs they have been listening to recently. I thought Oh, like maybe six people will send me songs. I was an idiot. Oh, like maybe FORTY-TWO people sent me songs. So, I have decided to haphazardly throw out 71% of the songs submitted and share twelve that the posse has been listening to that pass the Schmutzie test, the Schmutzie test being that I like the song AND I could find a decent version of it on Songza.I tacked on two more songs at the end, of course, because the Palinode and I get to have our say.To listen to any of the songs, click on the song title links. 2008-05-24 07:57:00 Ipod - The Music Player For AlliPods seem to be taking over the world. One sees them everywhere one goes, being used by adults and children alike. Stop the Music!!!
2008-05-21 07:52:00 Lots of newbie website owners ask this question: should I add music to my website? I have an easy answer, one that never waivers, and one that is reaffirmed every time I land on a website that has music playing: NO! Seriously, folks, it's ANNOYING! Is that the reaction you're trying to get on a website wherein you are trying to sell products?! Let's examine the reasons why you should not have music on your website.1. Amazon doesn't have music playing on their website when you land on it. If it works for Amazon....2. Music is distracting.3. Your emphasis and focus should be on your products and creating a professional website, not on music. Music doesn't equate to a professional website.4. Just because YOU like that music, doesn't mean others will too.5. If I have my speakers up and that music comes on, it SCARES me when it starts blaring out of the speaker!6. Most of the time there is no way to turn the music off on websites, and if I can't turn it off, I leave the website. D...

TunesDay: the silo effect and love of the music?
2008-05-20 15:22:00 My son Trevor and I were driving to dinner one night a few weeks ago and he was complaining bitterly about how his band, Doco (pictured at right), is still struggling to get decent shows outside their local area (NC/SC/VA/WV): “We’re not metal, we’re not emo, we’re not punk, we’re not hip hop, we’re not roots rock, we’re not power pop, we’re not jam band, we’re not any single genre. We’ve been trying to make something new, and that’s costing us money. Since club owners can’t ’silo’ us into a genre so they can package us with lower level acts, they only give us the odd bookings when they have open nights. We play lots of the ‘rep making’ clubs on Tuesday nights. It fucking sucks. Why do we have to fit a silo to get work? I love playing music. Is it asking too much to want to make my living at it?” Welcome to the music business 2008. The latest thing in the 21st century music business...
