Stuff the News Won’t Tell You
2012-01-13 18:59:00 According to the latest Gallup poll,This conservatives are the largest ideological group in the country. Of course you’ll never hear this from the main street press. Trouble is you won’t hear it from the GOP much either. Whereas the GOP seems intent on chasing the supposed center, it turns out that the center isn’t even the lion’s share of the votes. In the end it comes down to the question of what kind of wake up call me to be issued to get the GOP back to its conservative roots? Do we need to see another defeat along the lines of Bob Dolr and John McCain? And after getting their heads handed them on two separate occasions, if they haven’t gotten the message yet what makes anyone think they ever will? Link to this post!

Ginger White: Sleeping Up the News Chain
2011-12-06 12:44:00 Now suppose, just suppose, I claimed to have had a long affair with Chelsea Clinton. Perish the thought. However, on the basis of the claim would Tina Brown consider me fit to offer my opinion on Clinton’s baggage, as a television reporterette: Now put the shoe on the other foot, Neo-Neocon asks: But this Daily Beast interview with Ginger White seduced me (as it were) into reading more, and then writing more. It’s a cautionary tale of—well, of something, or perhaps many things, although I’m not entirely sure what they all are. Mostly it’s the fact that a person can spout off to the press these days (the Daily Beast is operated by Tina Brown and owned by Newsweek) and say virtually anything without proof, and it will all be printed as long as it’s about a person the MSM wishes to eliminate. One would think that Cain had been destroyed enough already, but apparently the Beast desires to humiliate him still further by publishing White’s criticism of his wife’s s...

Jesus Tablet: Savior Of The News Industry? Or In Need Of A Resurrection?
2011-01-12 15:15:00 Euphemistically called the "Jesus Tablet," Apple's iPad seemed to be the answer to ever newspaper man's dream, including Rupert Murdoch's. It was the first portable device with a large enough screen to make computing and reading convenient and expeditious. Apple finally produced a product that out-did the Kindle. Why wouldn't people pay for newspaper and magazine subscriptions with a tablet that was so handy?

No Holidays in the News Business
2010-11-23 22:35:00 As most people gear up for traveling, eating and shopping this week, I'll be working. There are no days throughout the year without a television newscast. So that means every day has to be staffed, even Thanksgiving and Christmas. The holiday crew is usually lighter but I think the workload can be, too.I can already guess my assignment tomorrow will be going to O'Hare to report on the holiday travel mess. And this year may be messier than ever due to the National Opt Out Day protest over security screenings. On Thursday, I'll be reporting for a shortened morning show and then I'll get to "work" on the WGN float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Be sure to tune...

Hidden in Plain Sight: The News Media's Role in Exposing Human Trafficking
2010-07-16 13:24:00 Panelists urged reporters and editors to avoid salacious details and splashy, "sexy" headlines that can prevent a more nuanced examination of trafficked persons' lives and experiences. Journalists lamented the lack of solid data, noting that the available statistics are contradictory, unreliable, insufficient, and often skewed by ideology.

Extinctions in the News
2010-05-26 18:03:00 Yes, I care. BirdLife International has announced, in the 2010 IUCN Red List update for birds, the extinction of Alaotra Grebe Tachybaptus rufolavatus. Restricted to a tiny area of east Madagascar, this species declined rapidly after carnivorous fish were introduced to the lakes in which it lived. This, along with the use of nylon gill-nets ...

Monitizing the News
2010-05-26 17:39:00 Forescene have noticed that over the last four years there has been much talk in the news media about monetizing news content. Over priced production costs, loss in advertising revenue and a plummet in sales have led to many newspapers, magazines and periodicals having to access how they operate. As many initially dabbled with ...
UID Round-Up: All The News on AADHAAR : For IT, Against It?
2010-05-26 13:43:00 It’s been quite a while since we wrote about the latest developments on the UID front. The Unique Identification project might just be the biggest changer in the way we lead our lives. Recently, the UIDAI (Unique ID Authority of India), lead by ex-IT Czar Nandan Nilekani, was renamed Aadhaar. It also has a new logo, the halo of the Sun bearing the imprint of a thumb. In the words of Mr. Nilekani : “We wanted a name that had a national appeal, could be recognised across the country and resonate in different languages, besides being easy to remember and speak. Aadhaar is a door to open all other doors.” While initially there people assumed that there would be one major IT vendor, who’d take care of all the tech requirements (we’d also blogged about biggies like Microsoft, Google among several Indian companies showing interest), new reports confirm that the UIDAI has split the project into many small ones and distributed them to speed up work. No single IT cont...

CBS News (Chicago): The 'We Won't Report The News if it Hurts Dem
2010-05-07 19:58:00 -By Warner Todd Huston CBS News decided that if certain aspects of the race for Illinois Senate between Republican Mark Kirk and Democrat Alexi "The Mob Banker" Giannoulias threaten to make news, why the good folks at CBS Channel 2 News will just refuse to cover it. I have to say, I find it interesting that CBS News has decided what it will deign to cover and what it won't. I am wondering if the rest of us hoi polloi were to chose that track at our places of employment. Don't like mowing a lawn, cleaning a toilet, doing that boring expense report, talking to the boss... well, follow the Channel 2 method and just refuse to do that...

Was The News Media DUI On Scott Lee Cohen?
2010-02-05 23:30:00 Relative to Scott Lee Cohen, the Illinois Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor, I will give him some credit for building/buying a campaign (and sponsoring job fairs) from out of nowhere. Hispanics not in the news
2009-12-08 22:13:00 The Hispanic community receives scant media coverage in the United States, found a new study released by the Pew Hispanic Center this week.An analysis of 34,452 stories that included print, online, radio and broadcast outlets found that less than 2 percent actually referenced Hispanics, the study found. However, most of these stories pertained to event-driven coverage and not to actual stories about daily life in the Hispanic community. The top four media topics related to Hispanics were the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court, the Mexican drug war, the H1N1 outbreak and immigration. The study examined a 6-month period from February to August 2009.Latinos are now more than 15 percent of the U.S. population but in media they are...
In the viral era, all the news that fits in print is obsolete
2009-11-11 14:41:00 Stand in front of a mirror and read this. You will get both all the news you need for the day and the self-affirmation that Yehuda Berg promises you if you follow Kabbalah. Good morning. I'm Sander Vanocur. And I'm Anne State. And this is the news. The news is brought to you by Kent cigarettes. Kent, with the micronite filter. And by Terryton cigarettes. I'd rather fight than switch. And by Schlitz Malt Liquor. Our top story, as always, the weather. Brant says it's going to be a high of 57 today. Tonight a low of 36. It'll be mostly sunny today. Mostly clear tonight. CATCH-13 (AND MANY OTHERS WOUNDED) President Obama says no one is to...
Residential Permit Parking Back In The News
2009-11-02 06:41:00 Last Thursday, during budget hearings in front of the City Council, City Clerk Miguel del Valle, had some strong words regarding residential permit parking.According to the Chicago Tribune on Friday, Del Valle encouraged alderman to review and reform a system that has gotten completely out of control over the past three decades, specifically citing problems with guest pass abuse around Wrigley Field. The Trib followed up with a longer piece on Sunday entitled "Chicago's parking blues", documenting the widespread frustration with RPP city wide by quoting a chorus of complaints from all areas of the city.Perhaps heat from del Valle and the media can finally get some much needed reform for this very annoying system that at it's core, is fundamentally...

Apartments, Metra and pre-foreclosure plans in the news this week
2009-10-09 22:24:00 Here's a round-up of this week's residential real estate news in Chicago: 1. Apartment vacancies are on the rise: Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism reported that more for-sale properties going on the market as rentals is pushing rents downward and increasing vacancy this quarter- meaning it should now be easier to find an apartment 2. Homes near the Metra are selling better than others: According to the Chicago Sun-Times, you can count on a home near a Metra station selling for 2-4%- not surprising, since you won't have to spend that money on parking at the Metra station. 3. Nearly 10,000 new foreclosures were filed in the first half of 2009 on the Southwest side: The Southwest News-Herald says vacant homes are staying vacant longer, further bringing down property values. 4. Freddie...
