New Angel in the Outfield: Torii Hunter agrees to 5 year, $90 million deal
2007-11-23 00:22:00
Late Wednesday night, the Los Angeles Angels agreed to a 5 year, $90 million deal with outfielder Torii Hunter. The agreement is pending on a physical from Hunter. The 32 year old hit .297 along with 28 home runs and 107 RBI's this past season with the Minnesota Twins. The gold glover was
Mench for the outfield
2007-11-11 20:15:00
Due to financial concerns the Brewers are considering letting Kevin Mench go. Mench platooned last year and at his salary for a mid-market team they just can't afford a part time player. The Mets don't have those type of problems as evident with Shawn Green making all-star money to ride the bench (mid-season). Mench only had 288 plate appearances, which is half of his usual amount and still hit .267 with 8 HRs and 20 doubles. The 28 y/o righty is a .271 lifetime batter with a .465 SLG percentage. In 2005 he hit 25 HRs, 33 doubles and drove in 73 runs. Whether the Mets trade Milledge or not he would be a nice piece and will only cost money after being non-tendered.Brewers outfielder Kevin Mench, who could be nontendered because of financial concerns. Mench got just 288 at-bats last season as a part-time player but is in line for a raise from $3.4 million through arbitration. source Kansas City Star
The Outfield - Your Love (1985)
2007-10-05 07:30:00
Ironically, given their obsession with America's favorite pastime, the Outfield got their start in London's East End. Playing under the name the Baseball Boys, the trio of bassist/singer Tony Lewis, guitarist/keyboardist John Spinks, and drummer Alan Jackman played around London and recorded some early demos, attracting the attention of Columbia/CBS Records. They were signed shortly thereafter and began working on their debut album, Play Deep, which was released in 1985. The album was a smash success, going triple platinum, reaching number nine on the album charts, and producing their biggest song, "Your Love," which was a Top Ten hit. To support the album, they launched an international tour opening for Journey and Starship. They began recording their second album in 1986 and in 1987 issued Bangin'. While not duplicating the huge commercial success of their debut, it did produce two hit singles, "Since You've Been Gone" and "No Surrender." The band's third album featured a bit...

The Outfield

An hour before tonight's game the Mets placed Shawn Green on the DL with a broken foot. Green doen't feel the injury is that serious and believes he will be ready to go at the end of the 15 days. Ben Johnson was recalled until Moises Alou comes off the DL sometime this weekend. Carlos Gomez continues to say that his hamstring is fine and he's ready to play. Johnson was ahead of Gomez on the depth chart but when the club needed an outfielder he was on the MiDL, when Alou returns I'll be curious to see who gets sent down.Has the kid done enough to earn his keep in the bigs ?Is there enough concern over the hamstrings to send him down ?Has he had enough of a taste to go down on a high note and not end up souring like Milledge ?Willie and Omar always say you don't lose a spot due to injury, so does Johnson stay because he had been higher on the depth chart prior to the injury ?I believe Gomez stays unless Johnson walks on water, which he probably won't have enough time to do but i...
The outfield situation
2007-05-28 04:04:00
In today's game Damion Easley played left field for the first time in his 15 year career. Just as the Mets have been able to do over the past two years, Easley is a role player that everyone questioned his value at the time of his signing and has proven to be a valuable component of this winning team. Easley went back to the wall on several tough plays and made them look easy. He also went 2-5 with an RBI and a run at the plate. Ruben Gotay filled in at second and looked great in the field showing excellent range. At the plate he went 0-3 with a walk and is only hitting .219, it's amazing the clubs developmental Achilles Heel is a hitting second baseman. They have to always turn to veterans because the farm, which seems to have great prospect at every other position hasn't found a hitting second baseman. The bench was compromised of Newhan and Franco both hitting under 200 and Gomez who said he was available for pinch hitting duties. Johnson was flown in but didn't arrive in tim...
Shouts From The Outfield - Barbadian Cricket Anthology to cash in on remain

{Ed's Note: I have been a very baaad boy but my day job has kept me swamped and covering these events outside of my regular duties left me with little energy to compile the data, this is actually the 6th of April but as I saved it as a draft - it still has the date of the 3rd! Plus S-L-O-W internet has not helped either, am using long weekend to catch up; plus many new features coming too! IDB}Like a highly touted match, the Spirit Bond in Bridgetown was packed - the event was the launch of the Arts Etc cricket anthology "Shouts From The Outfield," the venture was a long process envisioned and engineered by Robert Sandiford (winner of NIFCA's Literary Arts Governor General's award 2006) and Linda Deane (Frank Collymore Literary Endowment winner 2006). The project in and of itself can be considered as a premature baby, its birth was really for 2008 and brought fwd to this year due to CWC 2007 and is already off to a healthy start!Emcee (and contributor to the anthology) for the ni...
