Pentagon: Taliban a resilient force in Afghanistan
2008-06-27 16:05:00
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Taliban has regrouped after its initial fall from power in Afghanistan and the pace of its attacks is likely to increase this year, according to a Pentagon report that offers a dim view of progress in the nearly seven-year-old war. Noting that insurgent violence has climbed, the report said that despite U.S. ...

The "Pentagon"
2008-05-29 17:07:00
My Nephews first day of work at the Pentagon was yesterday. I guess this is the view as he pulled into the massive parking area. If this is his parking spot, well, I 'll know he must be sweeping floors or something, be cause I am not quite sure what he is doing their. Hopefully killing terrorists or some such fun, but it seems I will have to pry more to get the information I need. Since he is younger I maybe able to torture him? I hear water boarding is quick. I'll go right to that, why mess around with finger-nail pulling and beatings? Just pour ice cold water over the little brat! HAHA!! He's a good kid and I am sure he will plan the killing of many of Americas enemy's! OOH-RAHHHHH!!!Powered by b2evolution.

Addressing Asymmetric Threats: Shifts at the Pentagon And Strategic Communi
2008-05-15 18:42:00
Last Thursday, I was honored to chair one of four panels at a special seminar, "Dealing with Today's Asymmetric Threat," co-sponsored by the National Defense University and CACI International , with assistance from the Counterterrorism Foundation. The purpose of the seminar was to establish a framework for the development of an integrated and synchronized strategy, by the end of the calendar year, to address the asymmetrical threats to United States and global security. My panel, titled, "Global...(read more)

Tomgram: Nick Turse, The Pentagon Goes Hollywood
2008-03-22 12:26:00
by Tom Engelhardt Recently, photographic portraits of nine World War I vets (all 105 or older when taken) were unveiled at a Pentagon ceremony. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates then noted that, when it comes to their war, "There is no big memorial on the National Mall. Hollywood has not turned its gaze in this direction for decades." If true, that is little short of a miracle — as Nick Turse indicates below. Hollywood hasn't been able to keep its gaze off either war or the Pentagon since "the war to end all wars" began in 1914 (and the favor has long been returned). In fact, Hollywood and the Pentagon have been in an intricate dance of support and cross-promotion for almost a century, from a time when the Department of Defense was still quaintly — if more accurately — known as the War Department. Today, however, without leaving Hollywood behind, the Pentagon has branched out into the larger universe of entertainment. Video games, TV, N...
Google Maps got banned by The Pentagon
2008-03-08 06:37:00
A Google team entered the Fort Sam Houston army base in Texas and mapped everything, but the Mountain View-based company spokesman, Larry Yu, said that it was only a mistake. Naturally, the army had to take measures towards this possible security threat in the future, so itbanned Google map-makers from filming and conducting detailed studies of bases. I say naturally because the three-dimensional panoramas of the Texan base have found their way on the Internet, and are available for any terrorist with a plan of action, for further documentation."Images include 360-degree views of the covered area to include access control points, barriers, headquarters, facilities and community areas," the AFP news agency quoted a defense department statement. In response, Yu said on behalf of Google that it was "not our policy to request access to military installations, but in this instance the operator of the vehicle with the camera on top ? which is how we go about capturing imagery for Street-V...
The Pentagon’s “Pashtunwali” Payments
2008-02-29 06:58:00
February 29, 2008. The issue of civilian casualties in Afghanistan is a highly contentious issue, and for good reason. In an opinion poll commissioned by the BBC, 29% of Afghans said the international troops were doing a bad job. The number one reason given (at 39%) was civilian casualties. The issue of bad intelligence has been discussed here, while the over-reliance on air power is frequently mentioned at Registan and Abu Muqawama. But that’s not what I’ll be discussing today. What I’ll analyze today is the issue of compensation. But first some quantitative analysis: According to Human Rights Watch, in 2006 there were approximately 1200 civilian casualties in Afghanistan, of which as many as 300 could be blamed on international forces (and if the increased coverage of civilian casualties in the press accurately reflects what’s happening on the ground, I’m assuming 2007 will prove to be significantly higher). Pic: Anger over the killing of Afghan civil...

Political Correctness at the Pentagon: Stephen Couglin Fired
2008-01-05 07:16:00
More proof that President George Bush is anything but a true conservative. Can you possibly imagine Ronald Reagan allowing a proven leader in the fight against terrorism like Stephen Coughlin being canned on the altar of political correctness? But it should come as no surprise. Look at what Michael Chertoff, Johnny Sutton, Richard Skinner and many others have done to push political correctness in the Department of Homeland Security. And so now it has made it's cancerous way to the Pentagon. Thank you George Bush.  Washington Times article link Coughlin sacked By Bill Gertz Stephen Coughlin, the Pentagon specialist on Islamic law and Islamist extremism, has been fired from his position on the military's Joint Staff. The action followed a report in this space last week revealing opposition to his work for the military by pro-Muslim officials within the office of Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England. Will the Pentagon Challenge Bring Robot Cars to Road?
2007-11-05 13:30:00
The Pentagon actually has a robot challenge, and to those of you who do not know what the Pentagon Robot Challenge is I'll tell you. The pentagon's research arm called for innovators to design and race a self-driving car to make warfare safer,. In 2004 no one won the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's inaugural contest. The following year about five robots managed to cross the finish line and a team from Stanford University drove away with a $2 million prize. These races are a part of pentagon's effort to fulfill a congressional mandate to have a third of military ground vehicles unmanned by 2015. Certainly this time, more corporate participation can be seen. Teams are getting sponsors to help them lay-off their huge costs, whereas some sponsors are helping in some other ways, such as donating cars or engineers, and some suppliers have supported by giving equipments like cameras and sensors. In return the team stick corporate logos on their race vehicles, and publicize t...

Something's Rotten in Iraq and the Pentagon
2007-10-15 11:50:00
by Dave Lindorff Isn't it odd that in the air attack that the US military claims killed 19 high-ranking leaders of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia and 15 civilians, all the slain Al Qaeda members were men and all the men were Al Qaeda, while all the civilians were women (6) and children (9). Think about this a minute. This means that no women were Al Qaeda and yet we know that women also fight, and also blow themselves up as suicide bombers. Yet these women were all civilians. The children, of course, were children. And we're to believe that there were no men who were innocent bystanders. All those adult males who were killed were "bad guys." Yet there were innocent bystanders: the women and the children. Somehow, any innocent bystanding men managed to duck out of the way, or the bullets and bomb fragments (and I'm sure they were fragmentation bombs that were used, as well as a withering spray of machine-gun fire) that hit all those poor women and kids, just missed the m...

Why We Shouldn’t Be Careless With Automatic Bill Pay and Why The Pentagon
2007-08-17 17:25:00
I read an article from bloomberg.com that the Pentagon has paid a small South Carolina part supplier $20.5 million dollars in freight cost over the last 6 years and it was overlooked because they have an auto-payment system that pays suppliers as long as the orders are deemed high priority. My first reaction was stated in the second half of the title “Why doesn’t the Pentagon use FedEx and ask the suppliers to use their account for shipping“? As I thought about this more, all of these automatic bill pay that I’m enrolled in is basically the same thing as Pentagon’s auto-payment system. Right now, I’m basically automatically paying off my credit card bills, and to be honest, I don’t look at every line of every statement ever since everything became electronic and automatic. Could someone overcharge me for something? Of course they can. Will it get through without me noticing it at this point? Possibly. I’m sure a $20.5 million pack of bubble gum will not ...

Matthew Currier Burden is a military blogger. He is the author of the ?The Blog of War?.He fears that the new Army regulations for military bloggers have been made to suppress the truth. He commented : "It?s awfully hard for me to sit there and say you have to come down on these bloggers, when they themselves, especially the senior staff at the Pentagon, are leaking more information than every other source combined." "When I get into a discussion with a public affairs or even an operational security officer about blogging, I will usually point to the D.O.D. Paul Rieckhoff: To the Pentagon: Americans Don't Need You to
2007-05-01 13:37:00
Author:  Paul RieckhoffAnyone who saw last week's testimony given by Jessica Lynch and the Tillman family should be as livid as I am. The exploitation of these young troops' stories, and the terrible and unnecessary additional suffering the Pentagon caused their families, is simply unconscionable. That those at fault still haven't been held responsible makes it even worse. On the fourth anniversary of the "mission accomplished" speech, it is no wonder less than half of Americans believe that the military is giving the public an accurate picture of the war. But the most infuriating part of this scandal is the fact that the military brass and Pentagon PR consultants thought they needed to invent stories at all. Over 1.5 million troops have served with honor in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their stories are rarely caught on film in time for the evening news, so they aren't easily packaged for a ratings bounce or a public distraction from an unpopular and poorly-planned ...

Are the Pentagon and the President lying to us about Iraq?
2007-04-24 20:15:00
Two interesting news stories for you to read. Judge for yourself. Are the Pentagon and the Bush Administration lying to us in order for us to believe that things in Iraq have been going well?I have little to say about this today as I perceive the writing on the wall. I do recall Pope Benedict XVI's brief mention of the deplorable situation in Iraq today, just as I recall Michael Novak characterizing the Pope's perspective as "disappointing" and overtly "European." Only someone as historically, politically and ecclesially detached as Novak would even hint at the Pope desiring to communicate the message of the "American Left." Perhaps it is Novak whose perspectives are disappointing due to apparent ignorance and ideology (a post documenting Novak's numerous theological errors and socio-economic misrepresentations is coming in the near future). But like I said, judge for yourself.Tillman's Family, Lynch testify before Congress (AP)Lynch, Tillman's brother: U.S. military lied ...
