Teddy Kennedy: Godspeed To You. You Were A Man "For The People"
2009-08-26 15:04:00
If you get Meals on Wheels, Thank Teddy Kennedy. If you are able to vote at 18 years old, Thank Teddy Kennedy. If you got a "hand up" and not a "hand out", Thank Teddy Kennedy.Bill by bill, provision by provision, he expanded government health support to millions of children and the elderly, helped millions more go to college, opened the immigration doors to millions of new Americans from continents other than Europe, and protected the civil rights bulwark of the '60s through a long period of conservative domination. And by the time his life ended yesterday, surrounded by loved ones in a gentle scene that contrasted sharply with the violent deaths of his brothers, Ted Kennedy had built a nuts-and-bolts legacy to stand beside that of his presidential brother as a figure of hope and his senatorial brother as a figureofcompassion.(taken from the Huff Po)And this quote from the Huff Po goes on to describeWhen people were getting tired of hearing about racism or the poor or the decay o...

Mean While Back in the People’s Republic of Obama
2009-06-01 17:22:00
Words of wisdom mere words from the one, via Useless Toady: I am shocked and outraged by the murder of Dr. George Tiller as he attended church services this morning. However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence. From the Daily Herald: Chicago had seven shooting deaths in 24 hours this weekend, and police say they have no suspects in custody. All seven victims were men in their 20s or 30s, and all were shot to death. That is seven more heinous acts of violence, in addition to the million heinous acts of abortion each year, to which Barack Obama remains stone cold silent. 2008-08-21 00:10:00
When I was a kid, we'd go on vacations and play "The Alphabet Game," where you had to find letters of the alphabet, in order, on signs and license plates, and "The License Plate Game," the goal of which was to find all 50 states' licenses on the trip.I know what you're thinking, too, and the answer is, yes, those were the most creative names we could come up with. If we had invented "Monopoly," it would have been called "The Buying Properties Game."There were always two licenses that were the hardest plates to find: Alaska and Hawaii. They were the hardest because, in the case of Hawaii, who drives a car here from Hawaii? Only those people in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, I presume. Or Speed Buggy. In the case of Alaska, the licenses were hard to find because nobody actually has ever lived in Alaska, or if they did, they were eaten by polar bears. Now, though, Alaska plates are not hard to find; I see them all the time driving around town here in Wisconsin, and not the same car, e...
The People's Republic Of Capitalism. But I Digress.
2008-07-19 11:26:00
Excellent post over at the inside-out China blog on Ted Koppel's recently completed Discovery Channel show, "The People's Republic of Capitalism." The post really shines in analyzing the views of some of the Chinese nationals who spoke during the series and how those views fit in with China's history. It is just a really good piece and I suggest you check it out. The other day, in a post entitled, "F-ck China Culture Lessons. Give Me Anthony Bourdain With No Reservations," I lit into (a bit) courses that purport to teach Chinese culture. The thesis of my post was that one can learn more about how to deal with people of other countries (including China) by watching Anthony Bourdain than by attending a "How to do business in China" class that teaches you not to bring four gifts (hey, that's bad luck) or white flowers (that's death, baby). Just as an aside, I have never known anyone who has given out or received white flowers as a business gift! In response to that...
China: The People's Republic Of Capitalism
2008-07-06 22:58:00
Beginning Wednesday, July 9, and for four straight nights, the Discovery Channel will be running Ted Koppel's "People's Republic of Capitalism." The series will focus on China's economic growth and what this means for the United States. Much of the filiming is in Chongqing. Koppel is a good and fair minded journalist, so I would expect this series to be at least decent. To learn more about it, go here and here.

Woody Paige Not A Man Of The People
2008-05-16 22:34:00
Because we're Avalanche fans, we're forced to call the sports reporters and columnists at the Denver Post (Adrian Dater, Mike Chambers, Terry Frei, Mark Kiszla and Woody Paige) our reporters and columnists.  Whether or not we agree with them all the time (or ever), they're part of the home team, so to speak. In the case of Woody Paige, that means we spend most of our time rolling our eyes and being embarrassed by him.  He writes a lot of ridiculous, juvenile, not-as-funny-as-he-thinks stuff, and then makes a fool of himself daily on the ESPN argument show Around The Horn.  He builds his puff piece columns around horrendous one-liners (like "Foppa wasn't some faux pas") and more or less dumbs down everything he talks about. But, because he's a Denver columnist and he writes about the Avalanche, he's ours.  Kind of.  That means that we might care about how other people, those who mostly know him from his "work" on ESPN rather than his columns about the...

California supreme court overturns the will of the people on homosexual ma
2008-05-16 05:30:00
California Supreme court judge listens to arguments before issuing his decree. Apparently, the California constitution guarantees that men can marry other men. Asymmetric thoughts: 1. Patriarchy/ traditional marriage-phobes might be cheering, but only because their side won- not because the California Supreme Court did any justice. They will say the CASC just wanted to apply the law equally to everyone. Since homosexuals had as much right to marry somebody of the opposite sex as anybody else, the issue obviously had nothing to do with equal protection. Yet, my untraditional brothers and sisters will dismiss the California electorate as wrong and in need of "education." Those unwilling to succumb will face worse. Some will mention Martin Luther King and blacks. What does this minority want? They want the traditional structure of society to fail. Why? One, it helps foster the kind of chaotic social situations that cry for government intervention. Two, it deals another blow t...

Power through the people
2008-05-15 10:48:00
Have you come across a person who is so naturally friendly that when you put him inside a room of strangers, he'll be friends with almost everyone in no time? We call such a people-person, someone unbelievably nice and charismatic that he can charm anyone into doing anything.A socially-empowered person achieves so much greatness, basically because of the people that catapult him to success. He earns the trust and all-out support of the people, whom he had helped before. He never runs out of help. He can do anything with the plethora of people behind him. All because he knows he maximizes his social potential!See, if you know your social skills and you make use of them, you will reach self-empowerment. Self-empowerment is making a general overhaul in your life and turning yourself into a happier and more successful person. If you can be one of those people-persons, then I can't see any reason why you will not succeed. You just have to know how to start.1. Be genuine.Hypocrisy will j...

Rights Retained By The People
2008-05-12 03:07:00
"All Power exercised over a nation, must have some beginning. It must be either delegated, or assumed. There are no other sources. All delegated power is trust, all assumed power is usurpation. Time does not alter the nature and quality of either." Thomas PaineAs Thomas Paine said, time does not alter either the nature or the quality of the principles behind power. Either that power is delegated from a superior source of Sovereignty or it is assumed and therefore usurped. Now, the question of Sovereignty is perhaps one of the most important questions concerning the degree and quality of Liberty within this country. Only a Sovereign Source can delegate power and authority; likewise, only a Subordinate Source can receive those delegated powers and authority to act upon them.It then becomes quite obvious in the following words within the Declaration of Independence where all Sovereignty emanates: "That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just po...
