Sergio Garcia Wins The Players Championship In Playoff
Paul Goydos in the Lead at the Players Championship!
2008-05-11 06:28:00
Well, my predictions were a little off for today as Paul Goydos took the lead, Anthony Kim fell way back with a 79, but Sergio Garcia is still in there. My bet still goes to Sergio Garcia, let’s see what happens tomorrow. FYI, Anthony Kim still leads in driving distance for the week.  That might be his ...
Round 2 of The Players Championship!

Kenny Perry is at the top of the leaderboard with -6 total score while Bernard Langer, Paul Goydos, and Sergio Garcia tied for second at -5. Anthony Kim, the young Korean American, is at -2, at sole 5th place. With Tiger Woods not in the game this week, it’s hard to tell who will win as everyone’s ...

But What About The Players?
2008-05-07 18:15:00
While I've been focused this week on the Avalanche coaching situation, Draft Dodger over at In The Cheap Seats has been analyzing the free agency concerns facing each of the three player positions.  What do the Avs do if Jose Theodore takes off?  What about the limitations of Jeff Finger and Kurt Sauer?  Should Colorado go after Brian Rolston?  All these questions and more are pondered: Goalies Defensemen Forwards Worth noting in the comments section of the post on forwards is the brief discussion about possible captaincy replacements for Joe Sakic should he retire this summer (god help us all).  My vote: a year (of mourning) with three alternates and no captain, and then Adam Foote if he's still around in 2009-10.

Do The Players Want Success Badly Enough?
2008-03-18 12:03:00
The current malaise affecting our young squad has really exercised the minds of Gooners on this site who find it impossible to comprehend how with only eight games to go, all seems to be slipping away. There is an awful inevitability of the results when we see the likes of Chelsea or ManU play the teams ...
Nobby On The Buses

Alan Curbishley looks set to have Bobby Zamora back in contention for tomorrow's game against Chelsea. The striker has been out since 28 August with a persistent knee problem but has made three reserve-team appearances in quick succession - scoring a hat-trick in the first of them, a 4-1 defeat of Birmingham City. His last game was the 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Monday although the 27-year-old forward picked up a slight knock to his other knee. He was taken off as a precaution but has since resumed training. Confirming he would have largely the same squad as he had for last week's 1-0 win at Fulham, the manager added that Zamora was close. "Bobby Zamora only played half a game on Monday. He got a kick just under the other knee and he had to come off with it but he is training. So we will see how he is. He has got through the last three or four weeks and has looked quite sharp so hopefully he will be back."Dean Ashton also featured in that reserve game at the start of the wee...
Able And Ready
2008-02-23 11:51:00
A nice interview with Luis Boa Morte in this morning's Independent...Luis Boa Morte: 'I'm always able and ready and up for the fight. I'm not going to turn my back'... The Portuguese international returns to Craven Cottage today having endured a miserable first year at West Ham but, as he tells Mike Rowbottom, he has worked too hard getting where he is to give up nowLuis Boa Morte is on the spot, and clearly growing a little anxious. Behind his back, a slide screen shows a drawing of something which 20 eager pupils of West Ham Church School, seated in front of him, are striving to communicate ? without using the word itself."It's quite big," shouts out one eager girl in a red sweatshirt. Well, that's narrowed it down a bit..."You use it to do things," offers another. The picture is still not crystal clear to West Ham's famously spiky midfielder, who at this moment is looking like a puzzled boy."It helps you think," comes suggestion number three. Not quite correct, but it has...
Beasts Of Burden
2008-02-19 11:55:00
West Ham United return to full training this week after a few days' rest with the likes of Bobby Zamora, Julien Faubert and Nolberto Solano pushing hard for first-team recalls. Speaking on the official site, head physiotherapist George Cooper revealed he has been very pleased with Zamora and Faubert's progress following their match-winning contributions over 90 minutes for the reserves in the 4-1 defeat of Birmingham City last week. Cooper also had positive news on the efforts being made by Scott Parker and Kieron Dyer, which comes after similar optimistic news concerning defenders James Collins and Calum Davenport last week.A persistent knee injury has kept Zamora out of action since the Carling Cup victory at Bristol Rovers in the first month of the campaign. Having undergone extensive rehabilitation work to cure the residual swelling, the 27- year old is now closing on a first-team return. "He is strong as an ox now," said Cooper. "His legs are really good and he is in good nic...
The Golden Thread

You see stars that clear have been dead for yearsBut the idea just lives onIn our wheels that roll aroundAs we move over the groundAnd all day it seems we?ve been in between the past and future town She was the golden thread that united him to a Past beyond his misery, and to a Present beyond his misery: and the sound of her voice, the light of her face, the touch of her hand, had a strong beneficial influence with him almost always... Next Sunday will be 15 years to the day that Bobby Moore passed away and the man currently wearing his number has revealed what it means to him to have the shirt. "It's a big honour," reflects Matthew Upson. "Sometimes I do sit at home and think about it and I get a little buzz because it's a big honour. I didn't actually specifically ask for it. I was given it and it's a real honour to wear that shirt." With the team not playing this weekend ahead of the trip to Fulham, fittingly a club also served by the legendary Moore, next Saturday, Upson ha...
Different Paths
2008-02-15 18:34:00
A quiet news day gives us the chance to catch up on two of the forgotten men of this season. James Collins is said to be targeting as quick a return as possible from his serious knee injury with surgery due next week before he begins on the road to recovery. The Welshman suffered damage to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a reserve-team outing at Portsmouth on 23 January - just as he was approaching full fitness and a return to regular first-team action. Speaking to the official site, West Ham United head physiotherapist George Cooper said he is optimistic that the defender could yet return to play some part in pre-season training this summer. "He has got a 75 per cent tear of his anterior cruciate ligament and that was diagnosed under arthroscopy which has made planning the operation much easier," Cooper revealed. "There is going to be no surprises when they go inside the knee. They know what is going on in there." While it is difficult to predict yet when Co...

Julien Opens His Trap
2008-02-05 13:59:00
Julien Faubert has claimed in an interview that Giovanni Trapattoni could still be on his way to West Ham United. The former Italian manager is thought to be in the frame for the Republic of Ireland national job and was briefly linked with the Hammers' vacant 'Director of Football' role last month. The speculation was largely dismissed at the time. However Faubert - speaking in an interview with RMC - claimed that the 68-year-old could indeed be on his way to East London. "His arrival is possible, it is up in the air," said Faubert. "I don?t know if it will happen or not. I have a person at the club - he is Italian - who speaks French and helps me with the translation who told me about [it]. He [Trapattoni] would be a huge boost for our tactics because we have gaps in that area of the game, on the defending and positioning aspects."With comments that are sure to be an eye-opener for Alan Curbishley, Faubert stated he was surprised by the lack of tactical training sessions and rev...
Seeing Stars
2008-02-05 11:30:00
When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.Ralph Waldo EmersonWhen the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when something has suffered damage then it becomes more beautiful. It is in this spirit that Calum Davenport has been speaking to the media for the first time since breaking a bone in his neck in the first game of his recent loan spell at Watford. The defender joined The Hornets as cover for Danny Shittu, who has been on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations. However, disaster struck for the West Ham man after team-mate Darius Henderson landed awkwardly on him in the game against Charlton. Talking to Sky Sports News, Davenport said that he believed the injury is going to make him a better person and that he is just thankful his football career is not over."I'm definitely going to have a different aspect on everything that I'm doing to be honest," he stated. "I think there was a lot of swell...
The Wordsmith Keeper
2008-01-20 22:34:00
The Sunday Times has a nice interview with Robert Green in which the cultured goalkeeper reveals his journalism ambitions...He writes for a national newspaper but doesn?t read any, plays football at the highest level but prefers cricket and rugby. Goalkeepers have always been a breed apart, but Robert Green, of West Ham and England, is more singular than most suggests Joe Lovejoy. This 28-year-old son of a retired hospital consultant gained 10 GCSEs, studied law and psychology and thought twice before giving up his studies for the professional career that started at Norwich City a decade ago. Green is blessed [some managers would say cursed] with an inquiring mind, and has a thirst for knowledge that extends well beyond the confines of his 18-yard box. The success of the articles he writes for The Independent [without the aid of a ?ghost?] has encouraged him to believe that he could contribute more on a broader range of subjects, and Eamon Dunphy may soon have a serious rival as foo...
Upson Eyes England
2008-01-16 01:39:00
Matthew Upson is desperate to make up for lost time by forcing himself into the mind of England manager Fabio Capello, starting with West Ham's FA Cup third round replay against Manchester City at Eastlands tonight. Upson picked up seven caps between May 2003 and November 2004 and was named on standby for Euro 2004. But the 28-year-old has not been considered for international duty since and is welcoming the Italian's fresh outlook. The centre-half insists he is in the form of his life and is determined to show Capello what he can do against Sven-Goran Eriksson's City side, who drew 0-0 at Upton Park 11 days ago. "I've got personal goals I want to get to and international honours is certainly on that list," Upson said. "It's a level playing field now, and Capello appears to be a manager who will take everything at face value. He seems to go on form, so it would be nice to get a fresh look and emphasis on the set-up. I think my form's been very consistent and I'm working as har...

The players will not give up on Joe Gibbs
2007-11-13 23:14:00
Not all of them, at least. Mike Wise's column today was read after I'd visited the Fire Joe Gibbs Now website (which is apparently brought to you by Don and Mike) and there couldn't be a bigger contrast to how (some) fans are treating Coach and how (some) of his players are rallying behind him. It's a great piece in aggregate though I'm only quoting players throwing their support behind a Coach they still very much want to help win. Jon Jansen, for instance "This is Washington. This is the Washington Redskins," offensive tackle Jon Jansen said. "This is a lot of history. This is Joe Gibbs."... "Nobody wants to be the team that doesn't get Joe back to the Super Bowl or back to the playoffs," Jansen said. "I don't know what Joe wants to do personally, but I like playing for him. He's been good for me and my family. And I would feel terrible knowing that I couldn't help him out if this was his last year." Chris Samuels: "Coach Gibbs is the best coach I've ever had," [Chris] s...
The Boy's A Bit Special
2007-09-12 18:54:00
Mark Noble is interviewed in 'The Boy's A Bit Special' feature in this month's FourFourTwo magazine...Mark Noble, West Ham United Born: London, 8/5/87 Position: Central Midfield Nickname - Everyone calls me Nobes, they always have done. Some people don't even know my first name. Club supported as a boy - West Ham. I'm from Canning Town, so naturally all my family are mental West Ham fans. I used to go and watch them with my dad when I was a kid. Strengths - Passing and tackling. I used to try a few more skills when I broke into the team but I've developed into a holding midfielder these days. I reckon it's my best position now. Weaknesses - I treat everything as a weakness and work on making it stronger. I play a bit like - Steven Gerrard or Paul Scholes. They're the guys I've always looked up to. Highlights - I'm only 20 but I've had a few highlights already. I played 20 minutes in the FA Cup Final but to stay up last season when no one thought we could was amazin...
Personal Demons
2007-09-04 12:35:00
West Ham wide boy Matthew Etherington last night admitted he "hit rock bottom" because of his much publicised gambling addictions. The winger spent a week in the renowned Sporting Chance clinic undergoing treatment for his gambling habit last season and blew tens of thousands of pounds on horses, greyhounds and in card schools - and even owned up that he could not remember the last day when he did not have a bet. Etherington, 26, was left in total despair as his gambling addiction spiralled out of control at the end of 2006 writes John Cross in today's Mirror. While the majority of the Hammers' stars were driving round in Baby Bentleys and enjoying all the trappings of being Premier League stars, Etherington was in a VW Golf fearing that his Upton Park career was over.Alan Curbishley was forced to impose a gambling ban on his first-team squad as keeper Roy Carroll also went into rehab, while high stakes late-night card schools ripped team spirit apart. Teddy Sheringham, viewed as ...
Nobby's Secret Vice
2007-09-01 15:13:00
He's the puff-filled Peruvian with three trumpets in his locker and salsa in his step. But as Sir Bobby Robson and David O'Leary can both testify, Nobby Solano is far from polished performer... Footballers get plenty of free time so it's really good to find something else to do other than play PlayStation. Like most footballers, I've tried to play golf but the technique's too tricky and the weather in England is too cold, so instead I prefer to play the trumpet. It helps me relax, takes my mind off the game and reminds me of my life in South America.I started playing when I was at school in Peru. After studies each day, I'd play in the school band. Initially, I wanted to play the saxophone, that was my favourite instrument, but they only had a trumpet so I played that instead and now I seem to be stuck with it! As I got older my football took over and I was able to practise music less and less, but when I was 22 I moved to Argentina to play for Boca Juniors and I suddenly foun...
Dyer Injury
2007-08-29 10:30:00
The Club confirmed tonight that Kieron Dyer has suffered a double-fracture to his lower leg following the results of a series of x-rays. Following a late challenge by Bristol Rovers defender, Joe Jacobson in tonight's Carling Cup tie, Kieron was stretchered off the pitch and rushed straight to hospital where it was confirmed he had fractured both the tibia and fibula of his right leg. A statement reveals it is too early to say at this stage how long the player will be out for as this will become clearer once the first stage of surgery is completed.Speaking after the game, Alan Curbishley said: "We think that Kieron Dyer's broken his leg and we're so devastated for him. I just can't put it into words. The game was just immaterial after that and I think that the Bristol Rovers' player has got to be very disappointed with his tackle because, as far as I could see, he lashed out after losing the ball. The players could see what he did and that's why they were so angry. Obviously, ...
The History Boy
2007-08-27 16:43:00
The History BoyBy Russell StavesWith a cultured swing of his right boot, Jordan Spence made history at the Goyang Stadium on Friday night. With England and Brazil locked at 1-1 in injury-time, the Three Lions skipper cleverly diverted Henri Lansbury's shot past Marcelo's outstretched right hand before embarking on a joyous celebration. Not only did the West Ham's defender's goal ensure his country topped Group B, it meant England beat Brazil for the first time ever at a FIFA Finals."It's a blur now," said Spence as he tried to recall his moment of history. "When the ball fell to Henri I was pleased as of all the people it could have landed to, he has scored some great goals from the edge of the area. But he did not seem to catch it right. I managed to stay onside, I just wanted to direct it towards goal. I did not see the ball hit the back of the net. As soon as I made contact I was gone. It was the biggest buzz. Crazy. Just one of those feelings where I wish I could hit a rew...

Keeping the players informed
2007-08-10 14:53:00
This past Wednesday may have been an off day for practice for the Green Bay Packers, but that doesn't mean they weren't learning."On their day off from practice on Wednesday, Green Bay Packers players learned about Wisconsin law regarding domestic violence, drugs and alcohol," reports Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.Green Bay has done better than most NFL teams at staying out of trouble, but it's good for the reminder. Some of the most recent run-ins with the law that come to mind are Nick Barnett's night club scuffle, the departed Ahman Green's domestic abuse charges, and Koren Robinson's fleeing of the police to name a few.The Packers may not be perfect, but they're a little better off than some teams like the Cincinnati Bengals, Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins who have bigger problems on their hands."You know what's right and wrong, but it's always good to hear," Daniel Muir told the Green Bay Press-Gazette about the experience. "They tell us how exactly...
Captain Neill
2007-07-28 11:23:00
Lucas Neill says he is honoured to become the captain of West Ham United and hopes it will finally silence his detractors. Neill was heavily criticised last January after he rejected a move to Liverpool and opted for a move to east London, although West Ham were facing a relegation battle at the time. Doubters suggested the Australian international chose Upton Park because of the salary he was reportedly offered but Neill demonstrated his commitment by fighting his way back from injury to help keep the club in the Premier League. "I think my decision has been vindicated to some extent," he said. "I don?t need to prove anything to anybody and being announced as the captain shows I was always going to be part of this team. It wasn't ever promised, but I was told I would be important. If I was only joining for money, I would have sat on the sidelines and just picked up my wages. I didn't do that. I got in the trenches and helped dig us out. Now I?m hoping the gamble comes good becaus...
Head Between Legs

If a man isn't willing to take some risk for his opinions, either his opinions are no good or he's no good~ Ezra PoundDid he jump or was he pushed? Whatever the motivation behind Freddie Ljungberg's move across the capital- and there are many theories- the one thing that all parties seem to agree on is that the timing was right. The midfielder has signed on a three-year deal (with an option for an extra year) for an undisclosed fee - although it is thought it could rise to Ł3million - and anticipates a European challenge from his new club this season, but admitted it wouldn't be easy. "We need experience as the Premiership is the most difficult league in Europe. We need a good calm start," he said, referring to the controversial transfers of Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez that disrupted the Upton Park club last season. Alan Curbishley said that he believes Ljungberg can help transform the club this season and that his experience will be crucial in helping them challenge for ...

The pressure on the players due to expectation of fans was cause of Indiaâ€
2007-03-27 18:45:00
The chairman of cricket control board of India, Sharad Pawar didn’t blamed the players but has blamed the crazy Indian fans for India’s defeat in the cricket world cup 2007. He said that the players had a lot of pressure to win the world cup on them due to the expectations of the fans. The players couldn’t handle it and due to this they couldn’t play well.India is out of the world cup from the first round after the defeat against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and is returning to home today. By saying this, Pawar might be trying to save him as well as the players. All the players of other country too have pressure to win. Other country’s cricket fans also have high expectations from the players. Then why only India couldn’t handle the pressure. Similarly, in 2003 cricket world cup also the Indian team had a lot of pressure but became second. Then why only this time they cannot handle the pressure? It seems that this type of saying is just an excuse to run from reality. In reali...
Stop Robbing The Players!
2006-10-02 08:54:03
First it was Jerzy Dudek, now its Peter Crouch. Will people not just leave the squad alone? Price one has to pay for the celebrity footballer lifestyle perhaps but nobody wants to return home after a few days and find their house trashed, couches cut up, and your car robbed out of the driveway - whether you’re a footballer or not, its just not right! Thats exactly what happened Peter Crouch (according to TEAMtalk this morning anyway) who returned home after a brilliant game against Galatasaray midweek to find that his house had been broken into and ripped apart and his car swiped from the driveway. It seems soccer burglaries are on the rise; Jerzy Dudek suffered the same fate earlier in the year when he had medals and a whole collection of football memorabilia stolen from his home (and later returned); Wayne Rooney has his house ransacked in June; Andy Van Der Meyde had his car and his dog nicked; Beckham had his car nicked…. the list goes on and no doubt will continue t...
