THE POGUES WITH JOE STRUMMER: 1987
2008-08-21 13:01:00 Before getting to this: Fellow Clash obsessives will want to visit "Music Ruined My Life for this post. He's got a full DL of the classic "Give em enough dope" boot collection up right now, one of the many I've been planning to share with y'all at some point. It's one of the best quality boots I've ever heard, and it has an absolutely stellar version of "Train in Vain."As for today's post: The sound is a little muffled on this December 1 bootleg from Boston, 1987, but hearing Joe play with Shane is worth it. Especially on songs like "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" and "London Calling."As always, a few tastes and then the zip, which is an .rar this time.Streams of WhiskeyIrish RoverMedleyBody of an AmericanIf I Should Fall From Grace With GodRepeal of the Licensing LawsLullaby of LondonSouth AustraliaBottle of SmokeMetropolisBroad Majestic ShannonDark Streets of LondonI Fought the LawLondon CallingFiestaTurkish Song of the DamnedDirty Ol' TownSally McLennaneSick Bet ...

The Wire - Cole?s Wake, The Pogues ?Sally Maclennane?
2007-12-29 17:44:00 There isn’t a better show on TV than The Wire on HBO. It’s returning on January 6th, so I spent most of December watching past seasons and ran across this superb and touching scene called “Cole’s Wake” about Baltimore cops sending off a fallen comrade. The scene features the song “Sally Maclennane” by the ...

Music in the Morning: The Pogues - ?Fairytale of New York?
2007-12-21 12:59:00 It's the last Friday before Christmas, so let's drink until our teeth fall out. P.S. This is the best Christmas song of all time, in case you didn't know.
Fireworks . . .and the Pogues
2007-11-12 23:58:00 Fireworks . . . and the Pogues“You remember when the ship went downYou left me on the deckThe captain's corpse jumped upAnd threw his arms around my neckFor all these years I've had him on my backThis debt cannot be paid with all your jack”-The Pogues, Turkish Song of the Damned“Fuck you, Wade!” Mira cried as she ran out of the room.I just stood there.I thought that I had a good idea.I thought wrong. My idea: To make in up to Britain to see the Pogues on what could be their last ever tour a few days before Christmas. The Pogues with Shane McGowan, that is. This is special. I am in Western Europe. The Pogues are the only music group in the world that I would ever think about going out of my way for. This may sound frivolous and perhaps a touch adolescent, but I really love the music that this bands plays, and have always wanted to stand before them as they belt it out.I have dreamed into and out of these songs for many years. The Pogues have been with me on all of my travels:...

The Pogues - Tuesday Morning (1993)
2007-07-30 07:00:00 By demonstrating that the spirit of punk could live in traditional Irish folk music, the Pogues were one of the most radical bands of the mid-'80s. Led by Shane MacGowan, whose slurred, incomprehensible voice often disguised the sheer poetry of his songs, the Pogues were undeniably political -- not only were many of their songs explicitly in favor of working-class liberalism, but the wild, careening sound of their punk-injected folk was implicitly radical. While the band was clearly radical, they also had a wickedly warped sense of humor, which was abundantly clear on their biggest hit, the fractured Christmas carol "Fairy Tale of New York." The group's first three albums -- Red Roses for Me, Rum Sodomy & the Lash, If I Should Fall From Grace With God -- were widely praised in both Britain and America, and by 1988 they had earned substantial cult followings in both countries. Yet MacGowan's darkly romantic, wasted lifestyle, which was so key to their spirit and success, ultimatel...
Daily Digs: The Pogues, Procol Harum, The Strokes & More?
2007-01-04 23:09:02 The second volume of William Basinski’s four-volume epic The Disintegration Loops (a set based on old tapeloops which had degraded in quality), the progressive rock masterpiece ‘Tarkus’, and the stellar genre-bending debut from the Pogues are among the choice selections on this ‘Daily Digs’. Also worthy of note is Argentinian new wave trio Soda Stereo’s [...]
The Pogues - O Trevo Como Símbolo de Rebeldia
Recupero aqui um texto, publicado originalmente no BLITZ em Março de 2005, a propósito dessas reedições (algumas delas cheias de bónus e surpresas)...THE POGUES«RED ROSES FOR ME»Warner/Farol(8/10)«RUM SODOMY & THE LASH»Warner/Farol(10/10)«IF I SHOULD FALL FROM GRACE WITH GOD»Warner/Farol(8/10)«PEACE- & LOVE»Warner/Farol(6/10)«HELL'-S DITCH»Warner/Farol(7/10)«WAIT-ING FOR HERB»Warner/Farol(3/10)«POGUE- MAHONE»Warner/Farol(4/10)Acho- que já contei isto, resumidamente, nas páginas deste jornal há alguns anos. Mas, contado agora, ainda faz mais sentido: foi por causa dos Pogues - um grupo ...
