Nightly Ramble:WHAT Bradley Effect; Wright And the Press; Irvin And What He
2008-11-07 22:05:00 Welcome one and all to the most intense nightly read on the sphere.. BitsBlog’s Nightly Ramble Friday!!! TGIF! Last warm day of the year up here, most likely. We got to 65 or so today… that makes it nearly 5 days in a row. Not really all that odd, but as the number of warm days dwindles, you tend to cherish ever one of them, to the point where you relish pressing the weather envelope a bit. We went camping one year a few Novembers ago. Was in the 70’s all weekend. Was raining the morning we were to go home, as we broke camp. I have pictures of the rig parked at a truckstop in Erie, with snow falling on it at a good clip. Much have made a jarring sight on the open road that day. OK, enough… Lots to talk about today, as always, so let’s get to it. Oh.. before I forget…have some pizza, it’s fresh. A nod to Rodney, who awarded Uncle Bit yet another honorable mention at OTB’s Caption contest. So it now turns out that the vote t...

Hot Off The Press! A 2009 Sarah Palin Calendar
2008-10-31 03:54:00 Whether you think she'll be the 2012 Republican candidate for president or she's just getting an extra five minutes of fame, Sarah Palin is starring in her own 2009 calendar. The cover is not exactly cheesecake, unless you think it's sexy for a woman to stand in front of an American flag flinging an open shot gun over her shoulder.

2008-10-25 10:58:00 Within a few days of the “Joe the Plumber” incident, I was reading about his tax lien, that he lacked a full plumber’s license, and that the plumber currently has an income level that would make him eligible for Obama’s proposed tax cut rather than the tax increase. ABC news then found quotes a lot of ...
The Press does full court press to insist Catholics back Obama
2008-10-15 09:38:00 Ah yes. Opening my hotmail account, I am told by the MSN website that Catholics can support Obama…with a link to a Newsweek article. When the bishops and the Vatican warn about the culture of death in America, maybe their voice should be given a bit more publicity than Catholic dissidents. But of course that won’t ...

Courting Hispanics And Faith Voters Without The Press Noticing
2008-07-04 09:16:00 Obama’s been in the news courting faith voters, talking to evangelical leaders. McCain? He’s been visiting Colombia and Mexico. Ho hum. Yawn. I was bemused when one political writer wondered if the hostage rescue in Colombia had been “timed” for his benefit. Tres estupido. What if the rescue had gone wrong? But of course, the rescue merely ...

Four Years Later: Why Did It Take So Long for the Press to Break Abu Ghraib
2008-05-11 11:37:00 Sudhan @11:35 CET Charles J. Hanley, Pulitzer winner for the Associated Press, uncovered abuses at the infamous prison months before the scandal really exploded. Why were so many others so slow to act? By Greg Mitchell | Editor & Publisher, May 8, 2008 Four years ago this month, as May unfolded, each day brought fresh horrors, images, or details about the Abu Ghraib prison abuses in Iraq. Pictures of shackled and hooded prisoners gave way to detainees on leashes, cowering before snarling dogs, or just plain beaten and bruised. On May 10, 2004, an Iraqi human rights official charged that American overseer Paul Bremer had been repeatedly informed about abuses at Abu Ghraib. The New Yorker revealed that Donald Rumsfeld personally okayed a set of procedures that led to the abuses. Several major newspapers called for Rumsfeld to quit.At that time, in a column, I disclosed how Pulitzer-winning correspondent Charles J. Hanley at The Associated Press had actually “broken” the Abu Gh...

Obama on Meet the Press
2008-05-06 12:50:00 Barack Obama and Tim Russert discuss the gas tax holiday on Meet the Press.
Obama Makes Sense on Meet the Press
2008-05-05 03:14:00 I just saw Barack Obama interviewed by Tim Russert on NBC's Meet the Press, and was especially impressed by the following points:1. Obama said his "DNA" makes him ideally suited to bring Americans together - his black father and his white mother. I like that - the way Obama thinks and talks. When was the last time you heard another Presidential candidate of either party talk about DNA, in any connection to politics?2. Obama again spoke about the superficiality of the American flag pin issue - the degree to which Obama wears and does not wear a pin. I couldn't agree more. Did it ever occur to those who think flag pins are so important that a terrorist could easily wear one? What counts is what candidates say and do - not what they wear in their lapels.3. Obama explained his opposition to the gas tax holiday (McCain) and gas tax holiday plus windfall profits reduction (Clinton) proposals. They're sugar fixes, and, in the case of the windfall profits reductions, not likely to ...

The press finally got around to asking Obama about Ayers
2008-04-17 12:55:00 After the debate last night, I noted a whole lot of traffic… all asking questions about Obama and Ayers, apparently following up on Hillary Clinton’s questions during the debate itself. (Yes, I know it was Stephy who asked the questions, but who did Stephy work for?) They came across the whole gambit of Obama posts, mentioning Ayers, but mostly due to Google PLacement, they found this post from last February. McQ notes: Question: George STEPHANOPOULOS: A gentleman named William Ayers. He was part of the Weather Underground in the 1970s. They bombed the Pentagon, the Capitol, and other buildings. He’s never apologized for that. And, in fact, on 9/11, he was quoted in the New York Times saying, I don’t regret setting bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough. An early organizing meeting for your State Senate campaign was held at his house and your campaign has said you are friendly. Meet The Press
2008-03-31 10:30:00 To maintain theories of renovating the human race through systems...is about the same thing as to maintain that man grows milder with civilization. Logically, perhaps, this is so; yet he is so prone to Systems and abstract deductions that he is forever ready to mutilate the truth, to be blind to what he sees or deaf to what he hears, so long as he can succeed in vindicating his logic...civilization develops in man nothing but an added capacity to receive impressions-that is all. And the growth of that capacity increases his tendency to seek pleasure in spilling blood. You may have noticed that some of the most enthusiastic blood-letters are almost always the most "civilized" of people.~Nietzche"Western Civilization? Yes, I think that would be a good idea."~Ghandi"You have to be something of a butchering murderer to be a politician."~Henry Miller

The Power of Social Media meets the Press Release

But there certainly is a new wave out there ? the social media press release, or SMPR, spawned by Todd Defern and the folks at SHIFT communications. What does this mean for you? Well, when newspapers, magazines and other media go online, they are trying to create a conversation around a given article or topic they have written about. Why shouldn?t that be the case for press releases? So I decided to get a podcast together with Todd so he could shed some light on success stories using the SMPR. McCain goes to Iraq. Where’s the press?
2008-03-16 19:43:00 Ed Morrissey: John McCain took some time off of the campaign trail and hit the ground in Iraq this morning. The media calls it a “surprise visit”, but he had given indications that he would visit Iraq after he clinched the nomination in order to get a fresh assessment of the progress being made by General David Petraeus and the troops. He intends to meet with Iraqi leadership, who might get a glimpse of the McCain temper for their foot-dragging on reconciliation: Republican presidential candidate John McCain arrived in Iraq on Sunday to assess improved security attributed to a build-up of 30,000 extra troops of which he has been a strong supporter. McCain arrived in Baghdad and was due to meet Iraqi government leaders and U.S. officials in the heavily fortified “Green Zone” diplomatic and government compound, U.S. embassy spokeswoman Mirembe Nantongo said. … Attacks across Iraq have fallen by 60 percent since last June, when extra troops were full...
