The Prestige (2006) PG-13 130min
2008-01-04 08:42:00 The director of “Batman Begins” Christopher Nolan directed this film written by him and Jonathan Nolan based on the novel by Christopher Priest. Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson and David Bowie star. The plot: End of 19th century London. Three friends, Robert, his wife Julia and Alfred, are assistants of a magician. A escape trick goes badly and Julia dies on stage. Robert and Alfred become enemies, trying to sabotage each other on stage and disclose each other’s tricks of the trade. When Alfred performs a successful trick, Robert becomes obsessed in figuring it out, while intense rivalry between former friends jeopardises life of other people around them with some deadly consequences. The Prestige in the language of magicians like Michael Caine’s character Cutter is the third part of every trick. The other two are [1] The Pledge, in which a seemingly real situation is set up. [2] The Turn, in which the initial reality is cha...

The Prestige Film
2007-12-20 16:52:00 The Prestige is a 2006 period film directed by Christopher Nolan, with a screenplay adapted from the 1995 World Fantasy Award-winning novel of the same name by Christopher Priest. The story follows Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, rival stage magicians in fin de siècle London. Obsessed with creating the best stage illusion, they engage in competitive one-upmanship with tragic results. The film features Christian Bale as Alfred Borden, Hugh Jackman as Robert Angier, and David Bowie as Nikola Tesla. It also stars Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Piper Perabo, Andy Serkis, and Rebecca Hall. The film reunites Nolan with actors Bale and Caine from Batman Begins, and returning cinematographer Wally Pfister, production designer Nathan Crowley, and film score composer David Julyan. Priest's epistolary novel was adapted to the screen by Christopher and Jonathan Nolan using Nolan's distinctive nonlinear narrative structure. Themes of duality, obsession, sacrifice, and secrecy pervade the...

Michael Caine Creates The Magic Of The Prestige
2007-12-05 00:00:00 Obsession is a young man’s game. This is the line delivered by Mr. Cutter (played by Michael Caine) to Robert Angier (played by Hugh Jackman) in the Christopher Nolan directed film The Prestige. And obsession is a theme, among several others, that takes key precedence in this brilliantly crafted film about a very heated professional ...
The Prestige: Movie, DVD, Blu-ray disc Review (2006)
2007-09-09 16:31:00 What you don't see(Originally published 2006)If movies are among our greatest, most enduring vehicles for illusion, deceiving us on nearly every level to generate a manufactured form of reality, then a movie about dueling illusionists should, in theory, offer that same sleight of hand--only amplified.Christopher Nolan's "The Prestige" is just that sort of movie, and in spite of arriving so soon on the heels of the similar "The Illusionist," it pulls through with panache. The film, which Nolan ("Insomnia," "Batman Begins") co-wrote with his brother, Jonathan, is among the year's more compelling and baffling movies, a beautifully photographed, nicely acted period thriller in which two popular illusionists working the crowds in 19th-century London are divided by an obsession that's far from magical. It is, in fact, murderous.Since the movie follows Nolan's "Memento" in that much of its success depends on revealing as little of its fractured plot as possible, we'll brush only the ed...

2007-04-11 16:08:00 After I saw The Illusionist, which deeply put its mark on me, I tried out other movie from the same genre to see if anything could rival it. And, after seeing a few movies, I finally found its worthiest oponent: The Prestige. In this movie, the plot is also about the life of a magician, but ...

The Prestige is Stupid, My Daughter is More Magical
2007-03-20 21:04:00 So, I am not sure why there aren’t movies about magicians for years at a time and all of sudden we get two the same year. My wife and I saw the movie The Illusionist last weekend and we both agreed that it had less to offer than an anorexic cow at a cheeseburger convention. We generally like Edward Norton films and were shocked to see that he put little or no effort into his acting in this film. For instance, the last time I saw someone portray a role with a worse attempt at a foreign accent was Kevin Costner in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. I don’t have enough memory on my computer to list the reasons why I can’t stand Costner, so suffice it to say Norton was awful. So, to put this movie along side one of the self edifying dung heaps that Costner has pitched at us movie watchers means that there are some serious issues here. The only thing, I thought, the movie had going for it was all of the main characters die except Paul Giamatti (who gives us the only pe...

The Prestige
2007-03-11 11:29:00 It’s always nice to see a director-actor duo collaborate in successive projects, especially when they can be removed from the massive studio work situation that surrounds a film like Batman Begins, which is where we find Nolan and Bale, filling in time between Bat films. A subsequent pairing allows the director and actor to further their relationship and speak in a kind of shorthand, bringing their collaboration to new heights. Think of Scorcese-DeNiro and Scorcese-DiCaprio, or Spike Lee-Denzel Washington for examples of this. The term relationship is key, as The Prestige centers around the relationships the characters have with each other and what is perceived as their connective tissue plays both within and beyond the film. The audience is placed in a very strategic position of both knower and seeker of knowledge, and like a good magic trick, it is what we perceive and expect that will equally guide us and trick us towards the final act, or what is referred to in magic circl...

The Prestige
2007-03-06 17:10:00 This movie deserves to be watched by everyone. Not a movie fan it doesn’t even matter the prestige is a movie among movies. Will go down as one of the best in its time. I watched it and when the movie was finished i was in awe.. 10 out of 10
Tuesday-Chooseday: The Prestige, etc.
2007-02-21 07:11:01 THE PRESTIGE - I really dug this flick when it came out last year. I hope that it holds up on DVD, even though surprise-twisters (such as THE SIXTH SENSE) usually don’t. More than anything, the writing in this movie is top-notch, as is to be expected these days from the Nolan Bros. THE BICYCLE THIEF: CRITERION COLLECTION - I’m a sucker for father/son relationships in movies, and this one really breaks my heart. A classic from the Italian neo-realist movement, I’d trust Criterion to package this one up nicely. More after the jump, including Chris Guest and Alex P. Keaton.

The Prestige
2007-02-21 05:58:00 Wow!And I jolly well mean it.This movie is entertaining in a very non-Hollywood type of way.First, hats off to Christopher Nolan for a brilliant bit of direction. The Batman Begins director does a wonderful job of creating the right atmosphere required for such a movie. The cast is impeccable. I have appreciated Hugh Jackman for a long time (and especially after listening to him in Flushed Away) and Christian Bale portrays his character admirably.Michael Caine is his usual self, that is to say, untouchable as always. Sadly and strangely Scarlett Johansson simply did not fit in this movie. Do not ask me why. I think she is beautiful and acts well but some women just do not look good in Victorian dresses.I will not go too much into the story because unlike The Illusionist, The Prestige is unpredictable and has an ending that is not illusion, magic, science, or fantasy but a mixture of everything. The only quibble, if I may, I found that every time any of our two heroes picked a volunte...

The Prestige Home Index
2007-02-12 16:17:02 by Roberta Murphy First Republic Bank has created the first statistical model? The Prestige Home Index?that measures changes in home values in excess of $1 million in key California markets. What are some of the common features of these indexed homes? They have at least 3000 to 6000 feet, three to six bedrooms and three to six bathrooms, according to the study. Many are substantially larger. Digested reporting of this index would probably too hefty for one blog. Instead, we?ll turn it into three shorter ones. Today?s focus will be balmy and palmy San Diego County in Southern California?with emphasis on the tony towns and zips of Rancho Santa Fe (92067), La Jolla (92037) and Del Mar (92014). First Republic reports that the average luxury home in San Diego is a record $2.18 million at the end of 3Q 2006. First Republic?s Luxury Home Index additionally reports that San Diego luxury home values may have risen 1.9% from the second quarter of 2006, but year-over-ye...

The Prestige

2006-12-02 15:34:05 Genesis is back in Sabah. It was meant to be a surprise, but someone accidentally let the cat out of the bag to a few people. *Hehe*Today quite a number of us gathered after church at Rex's place to watch this year's DVD recording of Zion's Search For A Star. But before that, we had a funny and interesting trip around Karamunsing helping Hannah to look for a present for Keith. Did she find anything? No, but we found a number of funny t-shirts. Too bad no one had a camera. x_xAnyway, imagine Rex's living room, packed with fourteen people! (Me, Lionel, Sara, Hannah, Genesis, Keith, Rosalind, Ian, Abel, Abraham, Amoz, Imelda, Rex & his sister Janice) The DVD was considerably short if compared to the previous years. But there were some pretty memorable acts, and I did feel inspired after watching it. It made me ever the more determined to see this dream of mine fulfilled. What am I talking about? I'm not saying. *Hehe*Most of use pretty much went our own ways after the DVD. Most of...
