2007-11-13 12:05:00 An Evening Presented By The Rakes was the mega-bash that descended on the SeOne nightclub in London last Friday. I was suposed to be in attendance, but an evil chest infection and lack of cash prevented me (makes a sad face).The myriad arches and massive line-ups may have been every rocker?s worst orienteering nightmare, but the stellar live acts, from the gloomy hosts themselves to the shouty girl group We Start Fires, would have made it worth the expedition. For indie-electro mash-up lovers, they?d got it all covered with an Adventures in the Beetroot Field-hosted room, where Crispin Dior, Casper C, Filthy Dukes and even Terry Hall (from The Specials!) kept limbs flailing! 2007-07-27 23:57:00 "Ten New Messages" č il nuovo album dei londinesi The Rakes (uscito, a dire il vero, qualche mese fa), arrivato a circa due anni di distanza dal precedente lavoro "Capture/Release" col quale esordirono nel 2005. Dieci nuove canzoni che forse possono far storcere il naso ad alcuni di quelli che hanno apprezzato il precedente disco, ma che obiettivamente non hanno nulla da invidiare ai brani di "Capture/Release", sebbene con le dovute differenze. Il post-punk e il new wave svolgono qui una parte minore a favore di un avvicinamento al pop (nell'accezione positiva del termine), i suoni si fannno un po' pių morbidi. Un disco pių maturo, pių ricercato, che segna un'evoluzione per questa band.Gli episodi positivi sono vari. A partire dal primo brano, "The World Was A Mess But His Hair Was Perfect", che cattura subito, con quel motivo orecchiabile che entra facilmente in testa e proprio un bel ritmo. First we had Lily Allen, then we had Mika. Now, we have The Rakes! They have a hip, sort of punk, indie sound. They have some nice pop anthems as well though. For instance, We Dance Together. Their most recent single, We Dance Together has a nice remember-able (I guess rememberable is not a word ;( ), melody, with nice vocals.
