On September 12th, Common and The Roots (joined also by Heavy D, Colin Munroe, and Jeremih) performed as part of the Hennessy Artistry tour at The Shrine in Chicago. Our contest winner, Christopher Catania, wrote in depth about his live experience for his Live Fix blog. Above is the 3+ minute freestyle from Common, which Christopher writes about below (I love the jazz comparison).Then came a freestyle.  Common amped the crowd's intensity even more. Watching Common's freestyle reminded me of how a jazz player would prep on the fly before jumping into an improvised solo. In the video below, I love how Common simultaneously -;maintained the crowd's intensity, by covering the citywide compass with shout-outs to all the Chi-town "hoods," and readied himself for a forthcoming lights out freestyle....

The Hennessy Artistry tour came through to The Shrine in Chicago last night for a very memorable and lively performance! Common and the Roots headlined the show with amazing collaborative artistry that produced a powerful soul sound keeping the Shrine crowd dancing throughout! I was really impressed with the eclectic lineup, which included Zoe Kravitz, Colin Munroe, Jeremih, Heavy D, Common, and The Roots! R&B crooner Lyfe Jennings and hip-hop band The Roots debuted in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 this week, while new discs by Lil Mama and Estelle failed to sell 20,000 copies. Lyfe's third studio release, Lyfe Change hit the charts at No. 4 selling 80,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The newest disc's performance is a slip from the artist's 2006 sophomore set The Phoenix, which entered the charts at No. 2 and moved 136,000 units in its first week. The Roots also did better in sales the last time around, though they hit a notable chart number with their recent release. The Legendary Roots Crew is back with yet another offering of their soulful-yet-heavy delivery. Following in the dark tones of 2006's Game Theory, Rising Down is a collage of lush and deep soundscapes I have yet to fully appreciate. Like much of The Roots' catalog, Rising Down seems like the kind of album worth listening to over and over again to get the real feel of the record. Out of all the WONDERFUL, OUTSTANDING material MJB has put into the market for our listening pleasure... this is hardly one of her top joints.
