The Rules Every Foreigner Entering, Exiting Or Staying In China Must Know.
2008-07-18 06:59:00
HR in China has come out with an English language translation of the "Legal Guidelines For Foreigners Entering, Exiting, and Staying in China During the Olympics." and my firm's China based staff has, after a five minute review, decreed it "fairly accurate." It starts out proclaiming China to be ruled by law, but beyond that, it actually is quite helpful on the legal dos and don'ts for foreigners in China.
Can you trust Google to obey the rules? Is Google accountable to anyone?
2008-06-04 00:00:00
-By Scott Cleland In monitoring Google as closely as I do, it has become increasingly clear that Google does not believe it has to obey the rules, standards, regulations and laws that others routinely obey and respect. Google increasingly operates like a self-declared, virtual sovereign nation, largely unaccountable to the rules and mores of the rest ...

Guest posts - Real Estate 2.0 Vendors and Changing the Rules of Mass Media
2008-05-30 12:36:00
I've been focused lately on the implications of Web 2.0, social media and Twitter on real estate, and by extension, online business marketing.  I want to refer readers to two guest posts this week: At HomeGain blog:HomeGain evolves with Web 2.0 - the real estate industry as a whole will remain hopelessly behind in incorporating the best of Web 2.0 marketing. Companies like HomeGain, as well as the usual suspects in the space - Active Rain, Trulia, Zillow, etc. - will begin to provide a comprehensive set of services ranging from online marketing to business management tools to guide the real estate professional through the minefield, and that will begin to kick off the elusive Web 2.0 revenue model. At Real Estate Radio USA: Mass Media and Real Estate Must Completely Change Their Business Models - Real estate agents were used to buying classified ads in newspapers, and mass media was glad to oblige. Now that print classifieds are diminishing in effectiveness, mass media pub...
The Rules of editing
2008-05-25 16:00:00
The title is misleading because to imply that there are 'rules' for any creative process is to put a cage around creative exploration. But, there are certainly principles, paradigms, methodologies and frameworks that have been proven to work and its these that can form a solid basis for every editor in building meaningful, dramatic and engaging sequences. Two Editors/Theorists who have been so bold as to present a set of 'Rules' are Walter Murch (most famous for editing Apocalypse Now and the Godfather Films) and Edward Dymtryk (a prolific filmmaker and academic). These two sets of 'rules' should inform the framework for measuring the reasoning and intent behind each cut you make on the timeline. It's not a case of agreeing with them all but of asking the questions these 'rules' pose to come to a more refined understanding of your own editing process and an embedded approach to the pragmatics of continuity.Edward Dymtryk. The Rules in Florida & Michigan
2008-05-22 17:02:00
One of the things that’s baffled me this election season is how so many don’t seem to grasp the fact that Hillary Clinton did not break the rules by not removing her name from the ballots in Michigan and Florida. Thankfully, Zuzu of Shakesville has put up a post explaining this and a few other things ...

"Twitter" - The Rules of Engagement
2008-05-22 01:50:00
Grant Griffiths of Home Office Warrior, Blog for Profit, G2WebMedia and Home Office Lawyer has taken the time to write a very informative piece called, Twitter - The Rules of Engagement.  It is a worthwhile read, candid, to help you decide if Twitter is a tool you should add to your arsenal of networking/marketing tools. Some rules to consider:Key rules of engagement you should strive to follow. Add something to the conversation. Don’t tweet just for the thrill of posting something. Giving is better than receiving. Don’t start out expecting to receive right away. Be willing to give before you receive. Network with the “thought leaders” and “opinion shapers” within your niche or industry. In twitter terms, follow them and watch what they are doing and reading. Don’t be afraid to join in on a conversation. If you have something to add, say it. Don’t over do it on tweeting on a particular topic. If you have a lot to say, do a blog post and use twitter to ...
Gord Hotchkiss: Don?t Crown Google Yet, The Rules of Engagement Are Still B
2008-05-18 00:00:00
I first must say that I am sorry for not having posted in the last few weeks, I was on a search for a new home for eMarketing 101. Sonia & I as well as eMarketing 101 are officially moving on May 24. Moving in BC does suck, I can say that much. Thankfully, Sonia prepared a ?marketing plan? that really helped the process. It involved a sales letter, a description of our couple (where we met and things like these) as well as an appropriate dress code. I did not believe in all of it but it all worked out in the end. Over the last few months, there has been a lot of speculations over the Microhoo deal, the acquisition of Yahoo by Microsoft and I have been reading a lot about it, even though I am not interested in reading, writing or commenting on these issues. I found that most of these articles were lame and filled with speculative outcome and its impact on the search industry. I did not treat those news seriously as much as I never believe in any potential Google Killer. That te...
Schneier on US Customs Notebook Searches: Do not follow the rules
2008-05-16 08:34:00
I just read this article by Bruce Schneier on what to do about US Customs searches: Taking your laptop into the US? Be sure to hide all your data first So, if you look at part of his recommendations, they are: You're going to have to hide your data. Set a portion of your hard drive to be encrypted with a different key - even if you also encrypt your entire hard drive - and keep your sensitive data there. [?]consider putting your sensitive data on a USB drive or even a camera memory card: even 16GB cards are reasonably priced these days. Encrypt it, of course, because it's easy to lose something that small. Slip it in your pocket, and it's likely to remain unnoticed even if the customs agent pokes through your laptop. If someone does discover it, you can try saying: "I don't know what's on there. My boss told me to give it to the head of the New York office." If you've chosen a strong encryption password, you won't care if he confiscates it. So, if you look at the two recomme...

The singer's platinum and pink diamond ring, valued at £1.5 million, was bestowed on her by her new husband Nick Cannon within weeks of the pair meeting. Cannon gave a strikingly similar ring last year to his then fiancée, Victoria's Secret model Selita Ebanks. Diamond geezer: Mariah Carey, left, and Selita Ebanks have both adorned strikingly similar finger candy Although the jewellers Jacob & Co say it is not the same ring, most women hearing this story yelped with disgust. It?s a Question of Knowing the Rules
2008-04-27 05:25:00
Yesterday was a first in my youth soccer coaching career. A handball was called against an opposing player and my team was awarded a free kick, which about 90 seconds later was converted into a goal. “Timeout!” yelled the other coach, stomping onto the field. “I have an issue.” (I tend to think she had more ...
Danica Patrick?s Victory in the Indy Japan? Are the Rules Fair?
2008-04-24 19:41:00
Danica Patrick became the first female winner in IndyCar history recently, winning the Indy Japan 300 by 6 seconds. Some women’s advocates and Patrick herself are complaining about a new rule which feminists claim is “aimed at the women in Indy.” The rule says that lighter drivers have to carry ten more pounds on them. Race car ...
The Rules of Clintonball
2008-04-23 19:41:00
Forget the spin: the race is where it is. Clinton won Pennsylvania. The overall delegate margin has barely budged, however, and it is now even more assured that there is no reasonable scenario where Clinton can pull out a primary win absent intervention by the superdelegates. I was never a Clinton fan, in this campaign. I ...

How the Rules of Dating Have Changed
2008-04-21 21:52:00
The rules of dating have changed drastically for American singles in this modern age of Internet dating services and fast-paced living. The rules of dating for both men and women have become a lot more complicated than they were a generation or so ago. I am happy with these changes because I think that the old social norms are flawed. The traditional approach where women waited to be pursued and never made the first move should be left behind in the past. These old norms are really unfair to men who would rather take a more passive role and to women who had more dominant personalities. In the past the rules were clear and understood by everyone, but everything is now different. The passing of time made have things much more complicated than they have ever been. Fortunately, people can turn to dating services that can help them understand the present rules of dating.Everything is quite simple if you go to a speed dating event. All you have to do is talk for a few minutes to a variety ...

The rules can not be changed freely
2008-04-16 05:31:00

Once a judgment has been made, then under the same situation, the same judgment should also been made. Unless there is enough providence to identify this ...

The Rules Of Engagement
2008-04-07 15:56:00
Your romance is strong and you have stars in your eyes. Good for you! At some point, however, expect that you and your lover will have a spat or two. Don't worry, this is perfect normal. The reality is it doesn't matter how head over heels you and your sweetie happen to be; you will bump heads eventually. Disagreeing and fighting are normal in any relationship. In fact, it's even considered "healthy." What isn't healthy, however, is fighting like a 2-year-old or throwing tantrums. There are right ways and wrong ways to handle a disagreement between lovers. So, how should you proceed? There are some great ways to air your grievances or hear your honey's without wrecking the relationship. Here's how: Don't fight angry. If you, your sweetheart or both are so angry that you cannot think straight, put the fight on hold. Try to cool off and approach things in a calmer manner to work them out. Screaming and hollering never really solve problems – talking does. ...

Review: Breaking All The Rules
2008-04-05 04:21:00
Breaking All the RulesBy Monica RobinsonWhat happens when the rules we create for ourselves end up being the ones we most want to break?Between flying tequila bottles and auctioning off body shots, Allie McAllister knows how to work a crowd. When she isn’t mixing drinks at The Guild, she devotes her spare time to teaching aspiring authors—namely, male authors—how to make women melt with nothing more than a pen and paper. The Mistress of Seduction has only three rules for her students: 1) Six months is the limit; 2) When she speaks, they listen; 3) Never, under any circumstances, are her students allowed to fall in love with her.Her newest student has a lot to learn when it comes to putting his passion to paper, but there’s nothing Allie craves more than a challenge.Criminal defense attorney Adam Carlton is well aware he doesn’t have a creative bone in his body. Just the same, after taking a body shot off the most beautiful spitfire he’s ever seen, he has to see Allie agai...
The Rules of the Road
2008-04-04 01:43:00
Writing is an art. While there are rules to writing there is no formula to writing a good novel. These rules are simple. First, you must fall in love with a story Then, you must write a rough draft of that story. Finally, polish that draft, through successive drafts, to bring the story out. While doing this you will learn to write. Everything else is like worrying about gilding the frame of a mirror and hoping that this will somehow make the mirror reflect better. Each and every story requires us to learn anew, no one is an expert when it comes to a new story. You must learn to write according to the needs of each and every story; each story contains its own lessons on the art of storytelling and writing. Listen to the story, not your ego.

Rewriting the rules
2008-03-26 01:26:00
Investors had high hopes for Indonesia's first directly elected president, who took office in 2004. But has Yudhoyono made good on his pledge to open up the economy?Derived from Dutch law, Indonesia essentially has a civil law system based on codes and legislation. Judicial precedents are not binding, nor are they systematically published. Legislation and codes comprise a statement of principles rather than the detailed provisions found in UK legislation. Regulation in Indonesia is also ubiquitous and much ultimately relies on official interpretation and practice.Dutch colonial rule ended in the late 1940s and was followed by the rule of nationalist strongmen who governed with the support of the armed forces. One of the key challenges now facing the elected government in Jakarta is the lack of clear political and legal authority to push through the types of reform needed. A related issue is the effect of regional autonomy, another post-Soeharto era development. Regional inconsisten...

Know the Rules and Protect your Domain Name
2008-03-08 00:00:00
Australian domain names (.com.au's) are regulated by a set of terms and conditions outlined by auDA, a self-regulatory body that has authority over the domain industry in Australia. There are certain guidelines and requirements that one must follow in order to register a domain. Failing to do so could result in the loss of the name and any valuable time and effort put into the branding and marketing of the name. Why all the regulations? The restrictions and regulations seem to be put into place to prevent some of the "cyber-squatting" that you see with .com domain names. The rules help to ensure that the owner of the domain name also owns the rights to a related business name, trademark, etc. .COM.AU Registration Requirements In order to protect your domain name you need to make sure it passes the requirements set out by the auDA. The general idea is that your domain name must meet one of the following requirements: The domain name must be an exact match, acronym or abbr...

Change the rules so I win
2008-02-19 12:31:00
Jeff Weintraub assesses the rules-based issues facing the Democratic Primary, focusing on the issues of superdelegates and those causes and primaries in Michigan and Florida:The idea that the superdelegates were supposed to exercise "independent judgment" about what was best for the party was a quite deliberate part of the original plan. but apparently it has just occurred to many party notables, the commentariat, and bewildered ordinary citizens that this could result in having the superdelegates overrule the aggregate outcome of the primaries and caucuses. That doesn't seem democratically acceptable to many people ... but if it would be illegitimate in principle, then why have "superdelegates" at all?...I suppose it's possible that, in the unlikely event that either Clinton or Obama establishes a commanding lead in pledged delegates over the next several months, then a decisive majority of superdelegates might rally to the front-runner in order to forestall a fight at the conven...

The Rules of Golf - All about the real golf - How to play golf
2008-02-16 07:38:00
The Rules of Bedroom Golf: 1- Each player shall furnish his own equipment for play, normally one club and two balls. 2- Play on course must be approved by the owner of the hole. 3- Unlike outdoor golf, the object is to get the club in the hole and keep the balls out. 4- For most effective play, the club should have a firm shaft. Course owners are permitted to check shaft stiffness before play begins. 5- Course owners reserve the right to restrict club length to avoid damage to the hole. 6- Object of the game is to take as many strokes as necessary until the owner is satisfied play is complete. Failure to do so may result in being denied permission to play again. 7- It is considered bad form to begin playing the hole immediately upon arrival. Experienced players will normally take time to admire the entire course, paying special attention to well formed mounds and bunkers. 8- Players are cautioned not to mention other courses they have played or are currently playi...
