Unions and The Sopranos… who can tell the difference?
2008-04-16 17:13:00 BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Construction union thugs used the state Department of Motor Vehicles database to target nonmember workers and their families for violence, property damage and threats of sexual assault, federal officials said Tuesday as they announced the arrests of 12 union leaders and members. The president of Operating Engineers Local 17, Mark Kirsch, and several other high-ranking officials and members were charged with extortion and racketeering in an eight-count indictment detailing a 10-year reign authorities said stunted economic growth in a struggling part of the state. “At the end of the day, it cost the job sites and the developers and the workers millions of dollars in property damage, millions of dollars in lost jobs,” U.S. Attorney Terrance Flynn said. At job sites big and small where non-Local 17 members were hired, union members caused more than $1 million in damage to more than 40 pieces of heavy machinery by pouring sand and grinding compound into th...

No Entourage? The Sopranos is the answer!
2008-04-11 01:57:00 I’ve heard so many good things about The Sopranos over the years, that a couple of weeks ago I decided it would be good to see if there was any foundation to it. 9.5/10 on IMDB might seem a bit over the top for people who hasn’t watched it yet - but it’s a magnificent ...

In Treatment Concludes (For Now)
2008-03-30 06:17:00 Laura and Alex, for very different reasons, are no longer in treatment In Treatment with Paul. So it was only appropriate that the finale week concluded with Sophie, Jake and Amy ... and Paul as patients.Let's start with Jake and Amy. As I've been saying throughout my reviews, I think theirs was the weakest, most obvious segment in the series. Nonetheless, it concluded on a pretty good note, if unsuccessful for their marriage. Jake could just not get over Amy's sleeping with her boss. Not even when she was punished by being fired. Not even when she made some affectionate moves to reconcile with Jake. Not even when Paul tried to get them to see that there was still some powerful energy in their relationship. All to no avail. The therapy got them - at least, Jake - to see that their marriage had to fail.In contrast, Sophie's final session was an uplifting success. We get to meet her father. Sophie finally lets him know how his leaving her, when he left her mother, was s...

It's the third time the PGA has honored the show; it previously won the award in 2000 and '05.The win is the latest valedictory, which ended its run last summer. Since then "The Sopranos" has picked up the Emmy Award for best drama and swept the drama-series categories at the Screen Actors Guild two Sundays ago. It's also up for a pair of Writers Guild honors next week and a few other guild honors later in February. The Producers Guild tapped another Emmy winner, "30 Rock," as its best comedy series at Saturday's awards ceremony. The Sopranos - Season 6, Part 2 (2007)
2007-12-02 07:14:00 Last year, Tony Soprano cheated death when he was shot by his now institutionalized Uncle Junior. While Tony continues to muse about his second chance at life, he faces a myriad of immediate, stress-inducing crises at home, at work and from the law. Tony's wife Carmela plans for a future she's not sure will arrive, and son AJ and daughter Meadow find that adulthood holds its own surprises. Meanwhile, at work, Tony comes to doubt the allegiances of many of those closest to him ? no one, not Paulie, Bobby, Silvio or even Christopher is above suspicion. The clock is ticking. Time is running out. But on who?

Mad Men 13: Double-Endings, Lascaux, and Holes
2007-10-19 05:14:00 Well, I really liked the double ending of the concluding episode - #13 - of Mad Men on AMC tonight: first, what Don would have wanted, coming home and telling Betty and the kids that he'll be going with them to spend Thanksgiving with her family ... cut to ... Don walks through that same door to find Betty and the kids already gone (he had previously told her he wouldn't be joining them). Sure, Don might have called Betty and told her he was coming home ... But the double scene worked so well I can accept Don's lack of phone call as a necessary set-up.I also loved Harry (Isaac Asimov ringer, played by Rich Sommer) invoking the prehistorical cave paintings in Lascaux. They may indeed be one of the earliest known forms of writing. Siegfried Giedion has suggested that, if seen in flickering candle light, the images may move, and may be a primitive motion picture. (My colleague Ed Wachtel at Fordham University dubbed this the "first picture show," and I worked it into my science f...

The Sopranos Leads Emmy 2007 Winners
2007-09-17 06:04:00 As predicted, the final season of the Sopranos grabbed the most Emmys Sunday night at the Shrine Auditorium. NBC’s Heroes was snubbed. Emmys Marred by Fox's Heavy-Handed Censorship
2007-09-17 05:13:00 Sadly, the most striking thing about the Emmys on Fox tonight was the three times they cut off a speaker, and went to a lame shot of a glittering black ball on the ceiling. The first time, presenter Ray Romano was saying something about Frasier- cut to the glittering ball. The second time, Katherine Heigl had just won the Emmy for best supporting actress for Grey's Anatomy. "Shit...," she started to say from her seat in audience- cut to the glittering ball. These two instances were annoying. What, are we the American people all children, that we cannot hear such language? Is there a scintilla of evidence that children are in fact harmed by hearing such words? But the third cut was far worse. Sally Field, on stage to accept her Emmy Award for best actress for a drama - Brothers and Sisters - was talking about the pain of war, and dared to say that, "if mothers ruled the world, maybe there would be no more godda-"Cut to the glittering ball. We're not allowed to hear the phrase "go...

2007 Emmys Live Journal
2007-09-17 02:00:00 Welcome to my live comments and thoughts on the 2007 Emmys! I am live from my couch in Northern Virginia and will be here all night (or at least until I get bored or tired). Like ?Everyone Loves Raymond? in 2005, I would be shocked if ?The Sopranos? does not dominate tonight and receive its lifetime achievement award for Best Drama, actors, etc. I also expect to see at least three commercials tonight for the season premier of "Prison Break" (Monday night at 8:00 pm Eastern) and series premiers of "K-Ville" and "Back to You," the new comedy featuring Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton. The Washington Post?s Tom Shales wrote that the show should be titled, ?Frasier Goes to Pittsburgh.? In my book, that?s an endorsement! Anyway, feel free to post comments or predictions throughout the evening.Enjoy the show... (I'll be back soon.)---- Fox started the broadcast by having cartoons, specifically Stewie and Brian from the Family Guy. Fox has been a network for almost twenty years no...

Emmy Analects and Predictions
2007-09-16 16:34:00 Just bopping in here with a few observations and predictions about tonight's Prime Time Emmy Awards ...The very first Emmy, given back in 1949, was given to a ventriloquist - there has to be some significance in that.Al Gore's up for an award for his Current TV cable and internet venture. Would be great if he announced he was running for President, but I predict he won't (make the announcement tonight, that is).The Sopranos is deservedly nominated in a huge number of categories. The only real question, then, is in which category or categories it will lose. I'm predicting Michael Imperioli will not win Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for playing Christopher Moltisanti (though he did a superb job). The winner will be: Masi Oka for playing Hiro Nakamura on Heroes! Ugly Betty will win for Best Comedy Series, but Mary-Louise Parker will win for playing Nancy Botwin on Weeds. And last prediction for this morning: look for Colbert to win Outstanding Music, Variety, or Comed...

Michelle Borth, "Tell Me You Love Me" actress: Mr. Media Interview, Pt. 1
2007-09-13 03:24:00 The ironic thing about Michelle Borth?s role as Jamie, a woman whose fianc won?t commit to monogamy in the new HBO series "Tell Me You Love Me," is that she is the kind of sexy, intoxicating woman that could probably drive the best-intentioned married man to cheat on his wife.DOWNLOAD THE MP3; LISTEN HERE.ALSO AVAILABLE AS A PODCAST ON iTUNES and ODEO.BOB ANDELMAN: I was fascinated watching the show. It was very unlike anything I think I?ve ever seen, even on HBO.MICHELLE BORTH: Well, that?s a huge compliment. Thank you.ANDELMAN: How was this show pitched to you, and what was your first reaction to it?BORTH: It was pitched to me about three years ago, during pilot season, and it was very much what you would think. It was proposed to me as this really graphic show, and that that was something I should know before going into it. And I was like, ?Okay, well, let me read it.? Michelle Borth, "Tell Me You Love Me" actress: Mr. Media Interview, Pt. 2
2007-09-13 03:13:00 (Return to Part 1)ANDELMAN: One of the things that I know people have talked about a lot about the show is the male full frontal nudity, which, even in movies, you don?t see that, and that seems to bring that other element to the show that makes it seem that much more graphic because you?re really not used to seeing that.BORTH: I think that?s the whole point, though. I think it?s really interesting that that?s been like a big fuss because I almost want to say to the men, ?Oh, boo hoo, are you feeling exploited? I?m sorry!? I think it?s funny that people are shocked by it because we?ve seen frontal nudity from women. We?ve seen topless scenes and all of that. I like the show. I like that we?re bringing that to the screen. I think that it wouldn?t do the show justice if we just favored one gender. The show is about the truth of relationships, and it doesn?t favor specifically to the men audience by giving you lots of T & A. I love that because that?s not what the show is about. It is ...

Mad Men 8: Weed, Twist, Hobo, Excellent
2007-09-07 07:30:00 AMC's Mad Men was firing on all cylinders tonight, in a powerful Episode 8 which furthered and deepened the story of at least three sets of characters:Peggy and Pete start off with a morning quickie in the office. Pete of course feels a little guilty about this - he has a quintessential late 1950s mix of starched morality and male entitlement - and later disapproves of Peggy dancing the Twist. Peggy is not happy about that, but just about everything else is going her way, including even getting a little patronizing admiration from Don and the guys about her excellent ad idea for the lipstick campaign - which Don brilliantly maneuvers the client into loving.Don gets a $2500 bonus - a lot of money, obviously, in those days, in which a brand new book sells for a couple of bucks. He wants to use it to take Midge to Paris, gets stoned on weed with Midge and the beatniks instead, and in the process we see one of the best sequences in the entire series so far: Don as a boy in the 193...

Tell Me You Love Me on HBO
2007-09-05 17:06:00 I saw the first episode of Tell Me You Love Me on HBO On Demand last night. It begins this Sunday, and I was going to wait until then to see it, like a normal person, but (a) who says I'm normal and (b) reporters from the Christian Science Monitor and the Baltimore Sun called in the past week to interview me about whether I thought Californication and Tell Me You Love Me represent a new leap forward in sexuality on television. They do. Network television was and to some extent still is the old maid of media when it comes to sexuality. NYPD Blue made a little bit of progress in the 1990s, but it was HBO on cable which made the big breakthrough in the Bada Bing on The Sopranos, and went even further with Atia and Brutus (separately) in Rome. Now even that has been surpasssed by Hank and his continuous escapades in Californication, and the three couples we see in imperfect and intriguingly difficult relationships, in and out of beds and cars and clothes, in Tell Me You Love Me.My favor...

Serial Blogging: A Hypomanic Symptom
2007-08-01 17:41:00 I've decided that my newest hypomanic symptom is "serial blogging." I feel like I should go to a Bloggers Anonymous Meeting and say, "Hello, my name is Susan Bernard and I'm a serial blogger."Since March of this year, I've started four new blogs: Bipolar Wellness Writer, Honk If You Blog to Heal, John From Cincinnati, and Photography Learning (yesterday). In my defense, I've stopped writing two of them. I realized that writing two blogs is my limit. In the last six months, I've leaned a lot about myself from my blogging experiences. This blog provides the greatest satisfaction and while I sometimes wax and wane about writing it, I imagine I'll continue writing it for some time. Initially I thought my "Honk" blog would allow me to reach a broader audience of people who might not be bipolar but who write to heal and share my mission of concentrating on wellness rather than illness. After a few months, I decided that the "Honk" blog was too similar to this one. I stopped wri...

'The Sopranos' Gets 15 Emmy Nominations
2007-07-20 03:20:00 LOS ANGELES (AP) - "The Sopranos," which towered over television with its visceral, violent depiction of a modern mob boss' world and an unparalleled finale, could dominate its last Emmy Awards. Or could it be foiled by the fresh-faced kids of "Heroes"?The nominations announced Thursday for the 59th annual awards ceremony in September give the edge to HBO's landmark drama, whose 15 nominations were the most for any series. But the sci-fi sensation "Heroes" earned an impressive eight bids for its first season, including best drama.Cutting-edge shows dominated the comedy series category, with "Ugly Betty" leading the charge with 11 nominations. America Ferrera, who stars in the show based on a Colombian telenovela, heard the nominations with cast mates at the home of one of the writers."We popped a bottle of champagne and lots of screaming and hugging. It was fun," said Ferrera, who passed on the champagne because she had to be on the set later in the morning. She's the first Hispa...

Emmy Oversights!
2007-07-19 23:05:00 The Emmy Nominations were announced today - I'm delighted that The Sopranos did so well, and Weeds and Jack Bauer got some due, and Heroes, too ... But here, in classic television-watcher tradition, are some howls of protest from me about egregious oversights:1. Nothing major for HBO's Rome - including one of the best performances on television, ever - better, even, than most of what you see on stage and screen - by James Purefoy as Marc Antony.2. Nothing major for Showtime's superb Brotherhood, and nothing major for Showtime's Dexter, including nothing for Michael C. Hall, who gave a great performance. And nothing major, either, for Showtime's The Tudors.3. Nothing major for Battlestar Galactica or Lost - but not surprising - for some reason, award-givers have glass eyes and tin ears when it comes to most things science fiction.4. Nothing for NBC's Kidnapped. It was cancelled by NBC, finished its run online, and I predict it will come to be recognized in the future as the gr...

review of John Kenneth Muir's TV Year: Volume 1
2007-07-08 20:56:00 Last July 23, I wrote in an op-ed in Newsday that television was clearly enjoying a "new golden age". My evidence ranged from 24 and Battlestar Galactica to Rome and Weeds. Jon Cassar, accepting the much-deserved Emmy for Director of the Best TV Drama - 24 - a few months later, told the world how happy he was to be part of this new golden age. I'm sure many others recognized its onset as well, both before and after my and Cassar's observations. If there is any flaw in John Kenneth Muir's TV Year: Volume 1: The Prime-Time 2005-2006 Season, it is that he and tv producer Larry Brody (Hawaii Five-O -aloha!), in their introductions to the volume, present the "new golden age" recognition as if it is some sense debatable. It is not. It is apparent to anyone with eyes and taste. This inaugural volume of what will be a yearly series published by Applause Theatre & Cinema Books out of New York City makes this case beautifully. Defending Television - This Time Against Critiques That It's Too Good!
2007-06-28 18:47:00 I wrote a piece "On the Benefits of Watching Television" way back in 1980, well before I even had a computer. In those days, I needed to defend TV against claims that watching it made us stupid, or worse. I pointed out that we all needed a little down time, when we weren't intellectually or emotionally engaged at our highest level, and TV provided this. And, even back then, some of it - such as Star Trek - was indeed a feast for the mind.As recently as last year, I published an op-ed about Television's New Golden Age in Newsday, arguing against the same near-sighted, mostly academic, attacks on TV.But lately I've noticed a different kind of criticism of television, with just the opposite grievance: television may be too sophisticated nowadays, too complex in some of its storylines for its own good - in other words, too good! (See, for example, this Too sophisticated for most discussion of NBC's Studio 60, shortly before it was cancelled.) I've also seen grumblings that televisi...

Hillary and The Sopranos
2007-06-27 17:17:00 I though that Hillary Clinton?s Sopranos Spoof was very clever and would prove very effective in humanizing her. Liberal pundit Margret Carlson had a different take however :?The Carmela-Hillary juxtaposition has been made before by others, and not in Hillary's favor. For staying with a repeat philanderer, Carmela got to live in a McMansion, wear expensive jewelry and wield derivative power as Queen Bee of the mob families. Hillary got to be first lady with a good shot at the White House?Carlson goes on:?The biggest problem with playing the Sopranos is that no matter how much viewers found Tony a sympathetic character or felt sorry for Carmela for being married to a murdering sociopath, they don't want either in the White House. The person who had the bright idea to make the ad should get a promotion, but the person who approved it should be fired, unless it's the candidate herself.Unlike the Sopranos, in the saga of the Clintons, there will be a final accounting before the scree... |
