Guitar Shots to the Head: Tale of the Tape
2008-07-23 18:50:00 I am quite positive that some of you have video libraries of old UT games. My DVD collection consists of Seinfeld and about three other movies. I have never been one to collect things. In fact if it wasn?t for my wife, I probably wouldn?t even take photographs. Sure, I would have a few pictures of my kids, but I wouldn?t have albums of pictures. For the most part, I like to live in the here and now.

Bills/Redskins Tale of the Tape: Defense
2007-12-05 01:52:00 It probably wasn't the greatest idea, but I did it anyways: as I've done in the past, I flipped the proverbial bird at my mountainous pile of end-of-semester schoolwork and instead chose to intently watch the re-air of the Bills/Redskins game on NFL Network. This just gives public proof of something I've known for a while: college has my mind, but Buffalo Rumblings has my soul. So I watched the Bills game. Again. This time, I took notes. Here's what I noticed about the defense: On Run Defense: I can't overstate enough how fabulous Buffalo's run defense was. We're not talking about shutting down your average, run-of-the-mill runner; this was Clinton Portis. Aaron Schobel was great early on, getting penetration routinely and causing Portis to change directions. Penetration is obviously the big key to stuffing the run in this defensive scheme, and it seemed like everybody was knifing into the backfield at one point or another. Those who did it most frequently: Schobel,...
Bills/Redskins Tale of the Tape: Offense
2007-12-04 15:25:00 It probably wasn't the greatest idea, but I did it anyways: as I've done in the past, I flipped the proverbial bird at my mountainous pile of end-of-semester schoolwork and instead chose to intently watch the re-air of the Bills/Redskins game on NFL Network. This just gives public proof of something I've known for a while: college has my mind, but Buffalo Rumblings has my soul. So I watched the Bills game. Again. This time, I took notes. Here's what I noticed about the offense: On Trent Edwards: I was impressed with Trent Edwards. There were some flaws to his game, but that's expected for a rookie: his timing was off a bit with Lee Evans, which led to a couple of drops and a couple of misfires. That's something that should improve with time. He also isn't seeing the entire field at times, as he missed a wide-open Roscoe Parrish on a third-down conversion that could have resulted in a touchdown. That, also, is something that should improve as he gains experience. ...

Bills/Ravens Tale of the Tape, Part II: Defense
2007-10-25 00:06:00 As I mentioned yesterday, I was able to catch the re-air of the Bills/Ravens contest Monday night on NFL Network. I'd seen the game once live, so this time around I decided to pay closer attention to the nuances of the game. My notes were pretty extensive, so I thought I'd share some of what I saw. Let's talk defense; our offensive review came yesterday. Pass Rush: Obviously it may have only been a one-time game plan, but the Bills utilized the blitz a lot in this game to make life as difficult as possible for Kyle Boller. It worked - Boller had semi-decent stats (191 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT), but his accuracy was subpar (58%) and Boller missed on several throws late in the game with blitzers in his face. Popular blitzers include Donte Whitner, Angelo Crowell and John DiGiorgio. The team also got a pass-rush boost by playing Anthony Hargrove inside at tackle - his athleticism was a bit much for Baltimore's guards to handle at times. More on the blitz in the pass defense sec...
Bills/Ravens Tale of the Tape, Part I: Offense
2007-10-23 17:40:00 Due to a fortunate set of circumstances (read: me flipping the proverbial bird at my pile of schoolwork), I was able to catch the re-air of the Bills/Ravens contest last night on NFL Network. I'd seen the game once live, so this time around I decided to pay closer attention to the nuances of the game. My notes were pretty extensive, so I thought I'd share some of what I saw. We'll start with the offense; defense will come later on this afternoon early tomorrow morning (news, a.k.a. Trent Edwards, bumps opinion). Quarterback: You can't help but be impressed by Trent Edwards. Other than the Patriots game I'd never seen his release on film - it's as quick as advertised. But his release point bothers me a bit - he'll make some throws at strange angles; his deep throw to Lee Evans had a bit of wobble on it that caught Lee off guard and forced the bobble, and Trent also had a couple of almost-sidearm throws knocked down at the line. When he's in rhythm, he's a dead-eye,...

Tale of the Tape: Spurs, Cavs [David Stefanini]
2007-06-08 02:29:00 Lets go position by position and see who has a better lineup.PG: Larry Hughes vs Tony Parker. The experience obviously goes to Parker, as it will to every Spurs player in this series. Tony Parker is fast, explosive, and can hit that running jump shot like no one else can in the league. It will be hard for Hughes to keep up. On the other hand, Hughes is much bigger and more physical than Parker. I feel the Cavs should come out and look to get Parker in early foul trouble. Advantage: Parkers (Spurs)SG: Sasha Pavlovic vs Michael Finley: Finley has been in big game situations before, whereas Pavlovic says, "My defense is my offense." Both can shoot the three, Pavlovic is better at driving, but Finley has the experience and defense. This one is a tie, but for sake of explosiveness I would take Pavlovic. Advantage: Pavlovic (Cavs)SF: LeBron James vs Bruce Bowen. Unless Jesus Christ Himself was playing defense on LeBron, I would give the advantage to LeBron. Advantage: The King (Cavs)PF: D...

Don't Fight the Tape
2007-05-07 14:21:00 The old adage simply means: go with the flow. Despite what we may think, despite what the economy is telling us, if stocks are heading higher, be along for the ride. If they’re heading lower, bail out. I stated urging caution about the stock market two months ago (my opinion hasn’t changed, rising gas prices being the latest reason). Since then the Dow is up 8%, at an all-time high, and the S&P is up 7%, 25 points away from its all-time high. As I said in my April 2 posting, Hurricane Season, no one, including myself, can predict the market but we can make prudent investment decisions. I’m glad the stock market has gone higher. It’s good for all of us (except you short sellers), but I’ve used this rally to rebalance my mutual fund portfolio (i.e., take money out of the stock market) and I hope you’ve done the same. Of course the market may go higher. Don’t fight the tape, right?...
