Dems getting nervous about the Temple of O
2008-08-28 16:40:00
This by Ed Morrissey on Hot Air Politico reports that “senior Democratic officials” have had second thoughts about the wisdom of the scope, scale, and setting for tonight’s Barack Obama speech at Invesco Field.  The Greek temple set design appears to have been the last straw, and they now worry about the “rock star” impression that ...
The Retroactive Review: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Fortune and glory, kid. With ?Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,? Movie Review: Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
2008-05-29 04:44:00
When it comes to movies, not a whole lot of stuff will really freak me out.  Requiem For A Dream, yes, but not a whole lot more than that.  Yet this is a movie which, for whatever strange reason, just really gets under my skin. Starting this May 15th, now available in a special edition collector’s ...
From the Temple Town: Udupi Sambar
2008-05-22 14:43:00
Tucked in between the majestic mountains of Western Ghats on the east and mighty Arabian Sea on the West, there is a beautiful small town called Udupi. There are not many places like Udupi that has rich history, colourful diversity, vibrant people, virgin beaches, incredibly charming buildings and simply irresistible cuisine. I remember visiting the Krishna Temple with my parents and grandmother once in every six months when we were small and a walk on a Ratha Maarga (Chariot Street) was one of my favourite parts of the trip. Dad would take us to small shops on Ratha Maarga looking for any unusual piece of art and craft for his antique collection and promise us to take to our favourite hotel on a way back home for sinfully delicious, crisp Masala Dosa. A lazy stroll along the streets of Ashta Matha (8 temples) with Ajji while she narrated an amazing story of Saint Kanakadasa and Lord Krishna is something I will always cherish. It?s been quite some years since I visited the temple bu...

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
2008-05-09 13:13:00
The Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) adventure after Raiders of the Lost Ark is more violent than its predecessor, but also looser, more imaginative, and finally more satisfying. Still organized like a series of connected cliffhangers, the story (set 10 years before Raiders) involves Indy’s attempted rescue of stolen children from a ...
A New Look At The Widow Who Gave All She Had To The Temple Fund
2008-03-22 15:33:00
Luke 21:1-4 is often cited from church pulpits to exhort us to give willingly and in some cases, all, to ministry, a church building fund or some other project that the church is undertaking. Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in ...
Latest News from the Temple Mount
2008-03-05 17:41:00
The Temple Mount area of Jerusalem has been in the news again over the past two weeks. Yesterday, The Jerusalem Post reported that, “Police on Tuesday stopped Wakf Muslim trust officials from performing unauthorized construction work on the Temple Mount.” Over the last year, there has been tension between Wakf officials and the Israeli government over Muslim restoration work damage to artifacts on the Temple Mount. The situation is as complicated as they get in the world of religious politics of the Middle East. The Wakf is the body that administrates the Temple Mount’s daily operations, while the Israeli government is charged with the site’s security. The Wakf maintains that the Temple Mount was not really the site of any Jewish Temples. The Israeli government has a vested interest in preserving the evidence of this being the site of any of the Temples to strengthen their claim on the Mount. The Wakf, has the opposite interest to suppress anything that might prove...

The Temple of Damanhur - Italy?s Eighth Wonder of The World
2007-11-26 14:27:00
It is truly amazing what the combination of passion, privacy, and keeping the government out of the equation can produce. An Italian man had visions when he was 10 years old. Over the next 40 years he took these visions and brought them to reality in what is called the Temple of Damahur. A complex ...

Feast: Entrance of the Theotokos Into the Temple
2007-11-22 11:41:00
One of the bigger feasts (it lasts a week) and like many Marian feasts; the Feast of the Presentation is rooted in the 2nd century apocryphal Protoevangelion also known as the Infancy Gospel of James. As early as Origen this text has been treated as being "canonical by tradition" rather than having been included in the "official" canon of scripture. It's popularity is evidenced in the fact that very early examples exist in over 11 languages. Here is an excerpt - relating to the beginning of the Feast (7.4-9):"When the child turned three years of age, Joachim said, 'Let's send for the undefiled Hebrew daughters. Let them each take a lamp and light it, so the chid won't turn back and have her heart captivated by things outside the Lord's temple.' And this is what they did until the time they ascended to the Lord's temple. The priest welcomed her, kissed her, and blessed her: 'The Lord God has exalted your name among all generations. In you the lord will disclose his redemption to...

Pastimes at the Temple of Heaven
2007-11-21 16:21:00
Barely three hours after touchdown and happily sated with our first taste of Chinese food in China (more on the food in future posts), my friends and I headed for the Temple of Heaven. This temple complex, which is the largest in China, reflects the ancient Chinese belief that Heaven was an ominpresent god of nature that governed everything under the sky, hence it was the venue for many sacred

Rupert Murdoch And The Temple Of Cume
2007-10-25 14:50:00
The Emperor of TV Newser, Chris Ariens, has the lowdown on the glitzy Fox Business Network's gala at NYC's Metropolitan Museum of Art. From all accounts Rupert Murdoch loftily believes he is the Roman Empire's first and most important emperor Augustus (nephew of Julius Caesar) reincarnated. The coronation was at the MET's Temple of Dendur (15 B.C.) (left). Rupert, are you aware of the Curse Of The Pharaohs?
How are the Temple guards doing?
2007-10-17 11:42:00
From Seek Sobriety, Find Serenity, Oct. 17: "A person is composed of a physical body that houses a divine soul. The body is thus a temple that contains the Divine, and as such should be accorded its due honor..... Just as sobriety restores respect for the body so that we no longer deface it, it must also restore the dignity of the body's action. And our behavior must reflect the sanctity of the human being."I can't even count how many times I've done things to myself that would never be done to or inside a temple. Whether it was eating or drinking too much or the wrong things, staying awake way past the time when I should have gone to sleep, or using something that I would never give to a baby, it's all just as bad. And this doesn't count behaviors that I sure wouldn't want an audience in a temple to watch on a large screen. When I began to learn about this "divinity" of my soul and body, I realized that I had to start acting differently. Dr. (Rabbi) Abe Twerski tells the sto...

" When I was a King and a Mason,a Master Proven and skilled,I cleared me ground for a Palace, such as a King should build.I decreed and dug down to my levels;presently, under the silt,I came on the wreck of a Palace, such as a King had built. There was no worth in the fashion;there was no wit in the plan;Hither and thither, aimless, the ruined footings ran.Masonry, brute, mishandled, but carven on every stone,"After me cometh a Builder;tell him I, too, have known."Swift to my use in my trenches, where my well-planned groundworks grew,I tumbled his quoins and his ashlars, and cut and rest them anew.Lime I milled of his marbles;burned it, slaked it, and spread;Taking and leaving at pleasurethe gifts of the humble dead.Yet I despised not nor gloried, yet, as we wrenched them apart,I read in the razed foundationthe heart of that Builder's heart. As he has risen and pleaded,so did I understandThe form of the dream he had followedin the face of the thing he had planned. When I was a King and a Mas...

The Templer in the valley of the Loire
2007-09-01 10:43:00
Now it appeared finite, my new book to “valley of the Loire with Chartres and on the traces of the Templer ” (Iwanowski publishing house, author name: Cony Ziegler). Naturally it concerns in this book many locks, in addition, the Templer. Over the question, whether the Templer participated in the building of the cathedral of Chartres, it goes around the very well received Komturei of Arville and not least around Chinon, where the last Templer, Jacques de Molay, was arrested with its faithful ones. One sees there a Graffiti, which is to come from Molay.

The Temple Of Heaven
2007-08-20 18:05:00
Someone asked me did we see the Tian Tan i.e. the Temple of Heaven. Yes, sure we did, on our second day in Beijing, and here are over 30 pics. I didn't enjoy that tour very much, though.First, it was a terrible blazing hot afternoon - must be 40 degrees or something, and Uncle Robert laughed at me and said I had turned as red as a boiled crab. Hah, that fellow's always looking for food/thinking about food. We had actually been told the previous day (which was foggy) that it would rain, and so I shot off messages to the home brethren to 'pray for no rain'. Didn't realise all your prayers were so 'powderful'!Secondly, Vivien and I, if you had read the previous post, had been wandering like two lost sheep the whole morning, looking for the Forbidden City, and then looking for a cab, and I would rather preferred a sit-down tour than to walk again in one of the biggest parks in Beijing. And thirdly, I had seen the Tian Tan before, three years ago on my first visit to Beijing with P...

Worship At The Temple Within
2007-07-28 22:44:00
There are numerous ways to worship our Creator. For many the high-energy, jumping up and down while screaming at the top of their lungs until they hyperventilate method seems to fill the bill. Others find more satisfaction speaking in tongues, falling down, and rolling around on the floor. And of course there is the quiet, prayerful worship which I have written about previously. All of these are ways to satisfy a desire for the public worship of God and many of us need this as a part of our life.Too many, however, try to connect with God using only these outer forms of worship. By doing so they are shortchanging their spiritual life. Properly used the outer worship can be effective in leading the seeker to the true and deeper things of God which are accessible only via the Inner Path.In each one of us there is a quiet place we can go to and connect with God in a most intimate and secret way. It is like a personal church sanctuary that resides in our heart. I call it "The Temple With...

Their Backs Toward The Temple
2007-05-22 17:19:00
". . . At the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the alter, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east . .." (Ezekiel 8:16) I can't help reading those words without noting that one of the great sins of our day is the turning away from God's plan, place, and program for this dispensation--the local New Testament church. Even many preachers are guilty. They are so concerned with popularity, prosperity, promotion, and pleasure that they will bypass, run over, and even turn their backs on the New Testament churches. "Church-hoppers" ravage local churches like a plague. In most churches Biblical discipline is impossible to administer because the minute a "brother" is confronted with his sin he just slips out the side door and is accepted into the church across town before the sun sets! Even preachers have been seen vehemently proclaiming the authority of the church and then "hopping" to another chu...

The Temple of Literature - Van Mieu
2007-03-28 00:35:00
The Temple of Literature is Vietnam's historical seat of learning and is the most sacred place for the disciples of Confucius. It is one of the few remaining buildings from the original city founded by Emperor Ly Thanth Tong in the 11th century and is a well-preserved example of Vietnamese architecture. It became the site of the country's first university in 1076. Consisting of a complex of small buildings and five walled courtyards, it was an exclusive establishment teaching the principles of Confucius. Over a period of 900 years thousands of Vietnamese scholars graduated from the university. In the third courtyard is a pond, the Well of Heavenly Clarity, and beside it are 82 stone stelae, mounted on tortoises and engraved with the names of successful graduates. There is also a temple dedicated to Confucius and an altar where the king and his mandarins would make sacrifices.Click photo to enlarge
Dublin: Midweek Madness at the Temple Bar Hotel
2007-03-20 17:27:00
Photograph by Kari Hoerchler The Tower Hotel Group has just announced a Midweek Madness deal for their Temple Bar Hotel, through April 30. This offer is valid Sunday through Thursday nights, and with a €120 per room per night rate for up to three guests, this is a good deal for a hotel in the heart of Dublin’s entertainment district. Though cheaper digs in Dublin abound, those looking for a dependable business-class hotel with standard amenities could do a lot worse. Millions of tourists flock to Temple Bar every year for pubs, grub, free concerts, outdoor markets, and even the occasional serenade from a sensational wandering busker. Book stalls, the Project Arts Centre, the Ark Children’s Centre, the Temple Bar Music Centre, the New Theatre all render Temple Bar Dublin’s Cultural Quarter. With the 2007 Handel Festival just around the corner (April 13 through April 20), Cheapos might want snap up this deal before other culture vultures swoop down on this hot hotel ...
