The The

An archive of the The Long-Take
2007-06-07 16:00:00
Over recent years I've developed a profound interest in the Long-Take. Most comprehensively articulated by Bazin the concept of the continuous cinematic moment, unbrken by the cut, has a long standing place in the history of cinematic thinking and cinematic theory. Whilst Bazin and Eisenstein are often seen as polar opposites the truth is that the two together exploited in a singular work is what makes cinematic meanign powerful. As I have often boiled it down to - the Meaning Inside the Frame and the Meaning Between the Frames. But what has most intrigued me over recent years and been the subject f much writing and discussion as been the impact of virtual cameras, 3d graphics, gaming and the layered space on notions of montage and, in particular, the Long-take.One of my blogging 'to-do' list items has been to compile a list of great long-take cinematic moments but it would seem my work has been done for me. Daily Film Does have compiled exactly such a list entitled : ...

The Theatre of Security
2007-05-23 07:00:00
Last night?s Evening Standard reported on yet another indignity that long-suffering ? or is that just plain dumb? ? airport passengers will have to increasingly contend with.  Security guru Bruce Schneier invented them term ?theatre of security? to describe the largely meaningless, inefficient and often upsetting procedures that passengers are now routinely forced to undergo.  ...

On to the the next geekfest
2007-05-07 13:06:00
The hubs and I finished out X-Files marathon yesterday. We watched all the way through Season 5 and then the movie. Which, not that great. It was bad enough after watching the episodes all in a row night after night. I can't imagine what my fury would have been if, after watching the show faithfully for five years, I'd gone to see a movie that promised a Mulder/Scully kiss and got no freaking kiss. I remember the press. I remember them saying there would be a kiss. Screw you people! So now we are on to the next level of geekitude, and have started watching Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Or, as we refer to it, Star Trek for ladies.Which is a good thing. DS9 is my favorite, and I think is a lot of womens' favorite, simply because it is rather more soap-opera-y than the others. There's more romance. There's a war, which kicks ass. There's interpersonal relationships and everyone hangs out in a bar and there's all sorts of sexual innuendo (or as The Todd would say on Scrubs, "in-her-...
Two men stuck in airport in a real-life reprise of the The Terminal.
2007-05-03 11:35:00
Two Bangladeshi men lived in New Delhi airport for 48 days as they did not have passports to return home in a reprise of a role played by Tom Hanks in the Hollywood film The Terminal, a newspaper said on Thursday. The men were sent back to the Indian capital by Saudi Arabian authorities in March for arriving without proper papers on a Dhaka-Delhi-Riyadh Air India flight, the Times of India newspaper reported. The men who had left their homes hoping for lucrative jobs in Saudi Arabia were stuck in the transit lounge of Delhi's Indira Gandhi airport."They got so bored here that they would often request the eatery staff to give them some work - not to earn money but to pass time," the paper quoted an airport official as saying.Air India spent about $US2500 to feed them and pay for their visits to hospitals for medical check-ups under police escort before the Bangladesh mission issued new passports last week and ended their ordeal, it said.In the 2004 Steven Spielberg film, Tom Hanks pla...
Carburetor. The theory work
2007-04-20 12:29:00
Perhaps of any other details of the car is not placed as any kind of "fairy tales and stories about carburetors". Engines simply mixing fuel and air and control of fuel ratio coming into the engine at any time during the work. However, the manner in which this is done can be complex, especially in cars with the control of the composition of exhaust gases. Worth a bit to learn about the fundamentals of the supercar. Despite the perception, Engines do not suck fuel from the carburetor. All are fitted diffuser, which is a narrowing of the air holes supercar. When air passes through the narrow, it is recession pressure (vacuum). A small hole located at the site for the fuel. The atmospheric pressure acting on fuel squeezes it from the fuel cell reaches through the hole in the opening carburettor where fuel into intake manifold, and then in the engine cylinders. Engine requires fuel-air mixture variation in the composition of the different modes of its work when it cold, preheated workin...
The Theocracy Conspiracy
2007-04-13 05:54:00
For God's SakeBy Paul KrugmanThe New York TimesIn 1981, Gary North, a leader of the Christian Reconstructionist movement ? the openly theocratic wing of the Christian right ? suggested that the movement could achieve power by stealth. ?Christians must begin to organize politically within the present party structure,? he wrote, ?and they must begin to infiltrate the existing institutional order.?Today, Regent University, founded by the televangelist Pat Robertson to provide ?Christian leadership to change the world,? boasts that it has 150 graduates working in the Bush administration.Unfortunately for the image of the school, where Mr. Robertson is chancellor and president, the most famous of those graduates is Monica Goodling, a product of the university?s law school. She?s the former top aide to Alberto Gonzales who appears central to the scandal of the fired U.S. attorneys and has declared that she will take the Fifth rather than testify to Congress on the matter. The infiltration...

American Idol? How I?m Starting to Loathe Thee.
2007-03-11 00:36:01
I won’t bother giving my review…it was basically more of the same dreck from the week before. I like the same people: Blake (begrudingly, but he’s really one of the best), Melinda (she has such a spark and what a powerhouse voice in a tiny little package), Lakisha (not my favorite singer but I acknowledge her talent) and Stephanie. I was amazed that Sabrina Sloane is gone…I pegged her as one of the possible contenders for the crown. I’m sure it’s because they haven’t made me feel like investing my time to vote. I didn’t even watch the shows this week as they were happening. I had other things to do. That in itself is telltale. I never allowed myself to have other things to do if at all possible during the previous 3 seasons. I’m overall, unimpressed, uninspired and underwhelmed. But I can’t seem to let go. Like a good relationship gone sour. ::sighs:: Share This

The therapeutic waters of Laguna de Apoyo
2007-02-18 18:59:01
Laguna de Apoyo is an unspoiled crater lake with crystal clear water, breathtaking views and rich biodiversity. It is a magical place located at the heart of Nicaragua?s premier tourist region and only 5 miles from the colonial city of Granada and a number of charming ?white villages? or craft towns. This is Nicaragua?s tourism ?heartland?. A naturalist’s paradise The lake itself and the surrounding verdant slopes are maintained by Nicaragua?s environmental agency, Marena, as a protected area. We invite you to experience a naturalist’s paradise with abundant natural fauna and flora including howler and white faced monkeys, sloth, iguanas, armadillos, blue jays, toucans and a rich aquatic life including an endemic fish species as well as old growth trees, some over 100 years old. Babymoons set to make it big the the UK
2007-02-17 11:37:03
The lastest hot travel trend in the US is the Babymoon. This is when the expectant couple take a holiday before the birth of their first child, a last chance to have a relaxing holiday together before baby comes along. Travel companies see this an opportunity to build customer loyalty and hopefully bookings for family holidays in the future. We had a memorable Babiesmoon before the birth of our twin sons 20 years ago. We visited Andalucia and the cities of Seville, Granada and Cordoba.
The Theory of Global Warming
2007-02-04 04:03:02
Disclaimer: This isn’t tech related but after all, it’s my blog Something I have a big problem with is the “Theory” of Global Warming… There’s no evidence to support Global Warming… just as there is no evidence to support the effects of nuclear winter, the existence of aliens or that second hand smoke is dangerous (To understand my choices, read a lecture given by Michael Crichton at the California Institute of Technology entitled “Aliens Cause Global Warming“.) A section of his lecture covers “consensus science” and while many people try to say that consensus science is used to prove Global Warming and for that reason it must not be true, I don’t agree. However, I do think that consensus science is partially responsible. As Crichton says, “Nobody believes a weather prediction twelve hours ahead. Now we’re asked to believe a prediction that goes out 100 years into the future?” SEED, an educa...

The there's the significantly horrendous number of Floridans who seem to find a British accent and a chest a reason to ask someone for a date. I stopped counting when it had reached 2 a day, including one when I first stepped off the plane (and looked a mess- Orlando airport is a hellhole, as, if you're an international traveller, you have to take your baggage off one carousel only to put it on another, and have to travel another 15 mins, only to find that you have to wait another 45 for your luggage...) another when I was trying to book in to my (non-existent) hotel room (they'd lost the booking...if it wasn't for my boss, I'd be screwed...) and another when I was in mid-mouthful in the restaurant....

2007-01-13 16:24:05
Every now and then, the theme of this blog (and the site in general) is a subject of comment in various places linking to me. Generally, the comments are critical. Of course, people don't say much about a page's style unless they find fault with it, but still, there are those faults... I thought I'd explain what went into this design. A ton of agendas: 1. I insist on full W3C standard compliance. A single warning is intolerable. 2. I actually test my design on multiple browsers, looking for the closest possible match so that everybody sees the same thing. I have quite a few FOSS browsers on my three machines, and what I don't have access to I check through browsershots.org. So far, the big ball logo to (hopefully) your right is the only misbehaving element - it slides to the left a little in a couple of minor browsers. 3. I also want the page to be functional in text-browsers such as lynx and w3m. I know, the CSS won't work there, but the point is to have it functional and...

Today we celebrate the Assumption of Our Lady, the Theotokos
2006-08-15 19:48:01
Today we remember a deed of power: Our Lord Jesus Christ called his Mother to himself, in body, soul, and spirit. For Catholic Christians this means something simultaneously simple and grandiose: that the resurrection of the dead has been verified in Mary, the Mother of Jesus and Our Mother. She has received her crown, and she is as close to God as a mere creature can get, closer to Him than the Seraphim and the Cherubim. The Church rightly sings:You are truly deserving of glory, O Theotokos, the ever-blessed and most pure Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who as a Virgin gave birth to God the Word, true Birth-giver of God, we magnify you.The Church also rightly prays:Under your protection, we hasten, O Virgin Birth-giver of God. Do not turn away from us in our time of need, but pure and blessed Lady, save us!Redemption has been completed: A Man redeemed Mankind by dying on a cross and restored our life by rising...
