When is internet banking going to get with the times?
2009-05-26 05:53:00
A few years ago I started using Quicken to manage my business and personal accounting. At the time it was a great tool to manage my tiny cashflow  – I was a poor student, and delivering pizzas  for $8.50 an hour plus tips a few nights a week. I had to be ultra careful with my spending ...
A sign of the times? I hope not
2009-05-23 04:43:00
I don’t have a lot of experience in signs. I know some of the basic guidelines, like for billboards (simple message, under five words) and a few others. What I am pretty comfortable with is the English language — especially in writing (okay, typing). If you are into signs or any type of similar public display, let me offer a little PSA with a couple “don’ts” for you. The first one (right) is a simple improper use of apostrophe. Use apostrophe s — ’s — only to show that something possesses something else. Don’t use an apostrophe because you don’t like the way an s looks at the end of a word. Unfortunately, there are plenty other examples of apostrophe abuse. The other one (below) also is pretty basic mistake. Even my 2nd grade son knows that when you write or read, you do so left to right, or up to down. Not, bottom to top. (If you happen to recognize this one, please know that it was done by a volunteer parent, not the scho...
Foreign Direct Investment In China. The Times Have Changed. For Good.
2009-04-27 19:11:00
China Law Blog's Steve Dickinson recently did a China Economic Review column on China's efforts to move away from being an "export-led" economy. The column is entitled, "No Turning Back," [subscription required] and its thesis is that despite the economic downturn, China's overall macroeconomic plan is still moving forward. Steve starts out by noting how the recent session of the National People's Congress has made clear that China is not backing down from its plan to move away from export-led growth: For all the pledges of support for struggling manufacturers, the surprise package of the recent session of the National People’s Congress (NPC) was actually a definitive rejection of the export-led growth model. While China will obviously remain open to foreign commerce, Beijing’s response to the global economic slowdown is to emphasize even more strongly the role of domestic consumption and domestic investment in maintaining growth. Many foreign observers expected that th...
Oversell at the Times
2009-03-29 22:26:00
The New York Times published a piece a few days ago entitled, "Reinventing America's Cities". It recounts how during the '80s and '90s, while the US was in full Reaganomics-small-government-is--good-government mode, Europe was building things like an efficient high-speed rail network, and doing so in an environmentally sensitive way. ...

China's New Patent Law Amendments. The Times They Are A Changing....
2009-01-02 02:20:00
Recieved an email from Toronto-based international lawyer, Paul Jones, on China's just amended patent laws. I liked it so much, I secured Paul's permission to run it here: "Last week in Beijing there was the last meeting of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress for 2008. On Saturday it was announced that they had found that the revisions and consultations (they received some 500 responses) had gone so well that that the amendments had been voted on and adopted. The Amendments will come into effect October 1, 2009. The Amendments and the Amended Law (in Chinese) are here. [We will be watching for a good English language translation and will post it when and if we find it] The amendments introduce a number of changes such as an absolute novelty requirement, make it easier for judges to increase the penalties for patent infringement, require disclosure of sources for genetic resources, and require inventions made in China to be first applied for in China unl...

The Times: Firmly in the tank
2008-07-22 13:33:00
(CNN) — The New York Times has rejected an op-ed piece written by John McCain defending his Iraq war policy in response to a piece by Barack Obama published in the paper last week. You guys have all hear this one by now, so it hardly seems worth it to waste the bandwidth to copy the meat of that story. If you want, you can check out Don Surber and his look at it. Michelle, too, where she points out that McCain has learned a powerful lesson on who his friends are not.. You may also want to slide by The Anhoress who does a fair enough job of doing what we have been doing here for a long time; dismembering the New York Times verbally.  American Thinker points out that the money is the proof of media bias and lays it all out this morning. So, what we’ve learned, here, is that the New York Times is working feverishly for Barack Obama.  Gee, like that’s big news, huh? Well, it gets better.  Volokh jumps into this one too… pointing out that David Shipley, the guy wh...

Emmylou Harris was just interviewed in the Times
2008-06-04 12:38:00
The piece mostly focuses on how attractive she is for a 61 year old, and Gram Parsons.Still, at least this gives me a chance to post Boulder To Birmingham, one of my all-time favourites and surely one of the saddest songs of all-time (if you've read the Times article you will be able to hazard a guess at what the lyrics are about). My dad introduced me to Boulder To Birmingham and he's going to see Emmylou live on her current tour. He also has her new album so will hopefully post something from that, if it's great.Boulder To Birmingham was written by Emmylou and Bill Danoff. Bill's other credits include Take Me Home Country Roads, a smash for John Denver and Hermes House Party (I will resist the temptation to include a Hermes House Party track on the same thread as Boulder To Birmingham, but I must do a John Denver post and a Gram Parsons post before long).Emmylou Harris - Boulder To Birmingham (iTunes)

I know market conditions are slow and time on the market is longer than usual. As Realtors, we need to step up to the plate and make our listings shine. Time and time again I see our signs looking far less than professional. Name riders hanging on one side, posts slanted, and other issues. We may not be able to put the needed coat of paint on our listing but, our signs should always look like they are installed correctly and properly maintained. With the over abundance of foreclosures, short sales, etc. we still need to maintain our professional standards. The signs never were up long enough in good times to look tacky during the good times. Now that they are up longer we need to make sure they look great the entire time the home is on the market. Make sure your home is "SOLD by Friday!" Joel Friday Homes

Death's Factotum: Michael Gordon and the Times Pour Pentagon Poison into Na
2008-05-06 11:26:00
by Chris Floyd Judith Miller might have been the poster child for the corporate media's collaboration with the Bush Administration's war of aggression against Iraq but her New York Times colleague and co-writer, Michael Gordon, was every bit as culpable and complicit, happily playing stovepipe to the bloodthirsty bullshit gurgling up from the White House and Pentagon cesspits.  Miller is gone from the mainstream heights, but Gordon soldiers on at the Times literally. Although he is probably not paid directly by the Bush Regime to peddle their propaganda, he serves precisely the same function as the military brass that the Administration embedded as "independent analysts" on the network news shows a nefarious practice most recently exposed in great detail by...the New York Times. But the Times, like most of our great institutions, piously follows the scriptural injunction, and lets not the right hand know what its left hand is doing. And so...

Another optomistic economic spin by the Times
2008-05-02 19:26:00
The New York Times must really be trying to shed the "bias" shadow, as it has released another article today about the economy, and instead of starting with evidence that the country is near or heading into a recession, it started with the good news first. So here, in my investigation to show that the New York Times has a liberal slant, I'm almost tempted to say it doesn't exist. Still my sample

2008-04-29 17:51:00
(Now watch me get sued by The Artist Formerly Known As…).This post by Meteor Blades over at The Daily Kos today pretty much captured how I feel and what I wanted to say about the fact that our dear cousins who work for “news” operations with initials for names have pretty much ignored what I would call the story of the year (and in the running for story of the decade as far as I’m concerned). And that would be the total co-opting of our military analysts by Don Rumsfeld’s Pentagon to the point where these people went on T.V. to provide commercials for the war and thus feather their own financial nests; the problem is that their words utterly flew in the face of reality to the point where our military was killed in ever-increasing numbers, to say nothing of other coalition force members as well as innocent Iraqis (all of this was thoroughly and expertly documented by Times reporter David Barstow a week ago Sunday). And as much as I want to praise Meteor Blades here, I have to...

Sign of the Times: RE/MAX Partners With RealtyTrac To Add Foreclosure Data
2008-04-24 15:08:00
With a large percentage of homes that are selling being ones in foreclosure across the country, RE/MAX Regions has decided to partner with RealtyTrac and add foreclosure data to their websites. I can not find the report I read saying nearly one in three resales in California are foreclosures, but it is not surprising (found – via Inman News). Doug Quance has noticed the same issue here in Atlanta. But for some RE/MAX brokers to put foreclosure information on their listing page in competition with their full listings is intriguing. What it tells me is that foreclosures are the dominant housing product on the market and that even full service real estate firms are having to focus on the market to remain viable. This new feature is the result of a strategic partnership between RealtyTrac (http://www.realtytrac.com), the national leading source of foreclosure data; Reliance Network, a leading developer of Web-based applications for real estate companies and four indep...

Nintendo Wii - Popular Today, Will Remain So In The Times To Come

Gaming industry's giant Nintendo Co Ltd. is not absolutely a new game as someone might think it to be. It is basically an updated and renamed version of the previously known Nintendo Revolution. It is the Fifth generation of Nintendo gaming console. Nevertheless it has become a big hit amongst gaming users that overlooking the fact that this product does not exactly go overboard with features and they are also ready to put up with the rather monotonous graphics.Nintendo Wii - the AttractionNintendo's Wii took interactive gaming to a new level. It has some features that changed the whole concept of game console. It changed the conventional joy stick or joy pad instead it used motion sensors technology and that's makes it stand out from the crowd. It enables players to mimic real movements like boxing directly on the screen. The other fact that it attracts people is its affordability. The games of Nintendo Wii is not critical. She & Him get love from the Times
2008-04-16 19:53:00
Something is in the water about everyone thinking that Matt Ward and Zooey Deschanel are super hot shit.  Sold out shows.  SXSW sweat-soaked write-ups.  Hell, The New York Times are even offering up an mp3 of the duo's track "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here".  How sincere.  Plus, to show how indie-minded the paper really is, writer Melena Ryzik even goes the distance to get a quip from Stereogum's honcho.  This isn't to say that Volume One doesn't deserve the kind of praise it's getting, as it is a wonderful collection of near-country vignettes that are moody, ambling and downright enjoyable.Though she was raised and lives amid celebrity in Los Angeles and has appeared in both hugely popular films (“Elf,” in which she briefly sang) and critical and cult favorites (“Almost Famous,” “All the Real Girls”), it’s easy to imagine her puttering around a cozily decorated Williamsburg loft. She takes home doggie bags, prefers tights to s...
Sign o' the times: "NO REAL ESTATE OR MORTGAGE CANDIDATES PLEASE."
2008-04-15 12:06:00
Oh, my, how the tables have turned, and it appears the REIC-backlash is in full bloom.Probably the biggest reason for not hiring anyone with "realtor", "mortgage broker" or "appraiser" on their resume is that you don't know how long they'll be able to work until the FBI comes in and arrests them.Plus you'd always be worried about them stealing the office supplies. Or running some kind of con game on their lunch hour.So what will become of the hundreds of thousands of REIC who lose their jobs? Back to bartending, stripping, used car sales and drug dealing I'd expect. As lending industry crashes, thousands seek jobs elsewhereThe subprime home-loan rush is history. But its impact on the state's work force is just beginning to play out as tens of thousands of real estate, finance and construction workers are left looking for work after a number of heady years.Like a lot of mortgage industry workers, Stush, 55, tried to get work in other kinds of financial services such as insurance, ...
