Fidelity / a game of the weakest link
2007-11-10 22:34:00 Want to improve the sound of your audio system? Can it ever really be good enough? Being in the business of manufacturing audio gear I see the audiophile frenzy to upgrade components from a rather inside perspective. For some it is an never ending quest, for others it stops when the pocket ...
George Gray, "What's With That House?" HGTV host: The Mr. Media Interview,
2007-11-08 03:05:00 (Return to Part 1)BOB ANDELMAN: You say that HGTV is kind of conservative. Of course, they do air the show 11:30 at night. And the humor on the show would fit in primetime on any network, but yeah, I can see that it might be a little offbeat for them.GEORGE GRAY: Let?s just say, yeah, we caused a bit of a scare when we first joined ranks with them, but they knew who I was, and they were happy to have me aboard. They said they wanted to try something a little crazier, a little more fun, not so much khaki. HGTV has been really, really great to me. There?s a woman named Beth Burke? At every network, there?s always kind of some network suit goon that oversees the show, and she?s the network goon. And she?s just been our biggest savior. She likes for us to get away with all sorts of stuff. We?ll try to slip in these jokes in editing, and she will roll her eyes and then go try to talk to the powers-that-be. But, yes, they like to run me a little more late-night cause I think they see me a...

The Weakest Link
"If you look close enough, you'll...
2007-05-05 07:49:00 The Weakest Link"If you look close enough, you'll find everyone has a weak spot." That's a great line from "Fracture," starring Anthony Hopkins (excellent movie, by the way), but I think one could say the same thing about the wheelchair lift in my van. Its weak spot is the trip wire attached from van door to the lift, without which the lift will not operate (see picture). And to think that the ability of a piece of equipment strong enough to pick up a heavy motorized wheelchair all hinges upon one measly wire.Well, the chickens came home to roost yesterday. Ready to grab some lunch after watching the aforementioned film -- no, Sir Anthony did not eat anyone, in case you were wondering -- my nurse and I were less than pleased to hear a loud "snap" when he opened the van door. Gulp!"That's not good," we said at the same time.Though I had several hours of power left on my ventilator battery as well as a cable to hook the ventilator to the van's cigarette lighter adapter, the goal w...

Security is Still Only as Strong as the Weakest Link
2007-02-11 17:36:05 Despite all the strong cryptography available today, security is still only as strong as the weakest link, and the weakest link in many systems today is still the interface to the user. Even if every honest application ran strong authentication protocols, as long as a rogue application can just ask the user to enter a password directly, the strong cryptography hasn?t helped.
