Reversing the WHIP
2008-05-30 17:11:00 We're far enough into the season that I enjoy looking for statistical oddities amongst the player pool. With that large of a sample size, there are always going to be a few strange outcomes.It's pretty axiomatic in baseball that any pitcher with a significant amount of innings is going to have a higher ERA than WHIP, right? I mean, the opposite just doesn't happen. Last year, only one pitcher with twenty or more innings managed to reverse his WHIP. That would be Joba Chamberlain, who pitched 24 innings, had 35 Ks, and managed a .38/.75 split. Pretty impressive, and a sign of things to come. A couple guys did it in 2006. Brian Bruney, in an injury shortened season, had an entirely implausible .87/1.40(!!) split in 20.2 IP. He managed 25 Ks. Far more impressively, Dennys Reyes in 50.2 IP had ratios of .89/.99, with 49 Ks. So, who has a chance to join this group? Yep, it is totally derivative of New Order but you can?t but applaud the pristine application. In fact why not for once stop looking back to ?Ceremony?, ?Temptation? and ?State of the Nation? for your kicks and instead give ?Frustration? a go. Of course it helps that the Whip are Mancs and that they have the wherewithal to put on a great show. The uneven beat patterns are attractively familiar from the off and even though Bruce Carter and Danny Saville don?t really bother with a chorus the piece is so lovingly crafted it?s hard to be critical. The charges allege that both clubs failed to ensure "players and/or officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative and/or violent behaviour". We’ve got until 14th March to respond, which seems like a ridiculously long time considering the FA took two days to draw up the charges, but I would imagine we’ll not contest it and take the fine on the chin.
